Upper ranks have overwhelming demon aura around them and it is so powerful that any demon slayer can recognize it like rengoku said it, when akaza showed up. Muzan is a manipulative person he knows what to say to whom, so that they can put more effort in their work.
Fact : muzan's fav upper rank is Akaza, he only deployed him for specific tasks.
Don't forget they sense are sharp remember tanjiro is good at smelling and inosuka is good at awareness and zen is good at hearing

Not really related to this episode, but more of a meta commentary. While both sides of the argument of being sympathetic towards demons are valid, another reaction duo I watch brought up an interesting point. The bigger, and more subtle, takeaway from those scenes is how all of this ties back to Muzan. This single man destroys lives by preying on those at the end of their rope. Take Rui (the spider family leader) for instance, did Muzan even explain the consequences of what he offered? Probably not. So ya'll are both valid in your views of a demon's actions and atonement, but underneath all of it is the villainy of Muzan.
And that is why he is señor butthole!!!... Until I come up with a more insulting moniker
