I want to learn more about her. The biography on her website and the wikipedia page says she started working as a waitress in a jazz club in her late teens and became interested in music. Apparently she is self taught? How is that even possible? I thought you had to take lessons from age 3 and study at a conservatory to be able to compose and arrange like this.
Yes thats how it can be done but if you find musicians who are curious and get together with them and start analysing cord patterns and scales it is possible to progress and start doung gigs and experimenting with original tunes When Carla started Steve the bass was playing in the George Russel Orchestra and had a disciplined musical skill Seeing these brassy instrements live can be life changing when your a few feet awsy its all CDs and auto tune in the commercial world as you can hear these are creative types great post thank you @@nastyhardcore7641
essential trivia (trivium?) Carla and daughter Karen do each others hair. Both always look great .Both ARE great,in my opinion.but isn't the thing here, this is such a great band ,so tight and tough and heated all at the same time . and ,of course -deeply soulful.
The late, great, blues man Alexis Korner once refer to Mr Valente as, Gary "Iron lips" Valente, I reckon he hits the nail right on the head as this video goes to show.
Whenever i drove by Grog Krill I looked for the escalator over the hill. RIP Carla Bkey composer performer
par excellence

@tonyfreejazz20
the saxplayer is Wolfgang Puschnig from Austria
now I feel happy !
So it's intentional confusion then...
I totally like the piece, stepped into it on the search for Gary Valente stuff - I love his crazy bonesound.
Carla loves trombones!
Is Carla Bley the one that fronts the band or the one on that hammond thingy? Or is this special fx ;-) ?
Both look totally alike...
Gary Valente trombone. Red shirt sax is Andy Sheppard
de que parte es Gary Valent que no había escuchado de él y me parece un estilo chevere bien popular.....
💜💛😉💚
@gruenerbereich Karen Mantler - daughter and also a composer
Terrific stuff.
But I'm puzzled. If Carla is conducting, who is that at the keyboards at 1:25? A clone? Twin? Video trickery?
Ah - is one of the two Carla's daughter, Karen Mantler? But who is whom?
