    Thanks for sharing the progress on your latest Blue Comet project. I am sure the project will turn out great and will look fantastic running on the club layout. I appreciate showing how you made paint samples on the spoons and color matched them to the locomotive. I know it is a lot of work, but well worth it to make sure you are happy with the paint color. I am looking forward to seeing part 2. Take care and stay safe. -Tom

      Thanks Tom! It’s definitely a change of pace that was very much needed. The spoons work great as paint does look different on curved surfaces than flat ones. It really helps see the way paint color changes with lighting. BTW I got the signs! Thanks again! I am ordering a bunch on materials for the next project in the layout and these will be a great addition. All the best, John

    Nice looking locomotive. Can't wait to see one of the kit cars completed. I have the G scale Blue Comet, but need to change the names on a couple cars that are duplicates. Bachmann didn't make very many cars. Look forward to the progress.

    Hey John this a cool project your getting into . Our chapter of the NHRS did a presentation back in the fall about the crash of the Blue Comet back in 1939 . It was pretty interesting , a few of the guys actually went out to the crash sight which still had track and parts scattered around. I think it took around 3 hours from Jersey City to AC . The PRR ran from Penn Station to AC , they ran some 11 years after the Comet stopped . I can imagine what it was like to see them both pull into AC . Take care .

      Thanks Jerry! That’s really cool... there is a book out there on the blue comet although I see them for sale for several hundred dollars... so I have bin piecing as much information and prototype photos as I can. These kits are a lot of work but today I put it through its paces on the club layout and it ran like a top. I am super pumped to get it painted and finish up the other kits. Thanks for watching! @@RailserveJohn I actually have an Overland Brass model of 831. The colors are different than BLI uses. They are much brighter and more vivid. I would guess it is in as delivered paint. The BLI model is more like one that has been well maintained but still not brand spanking new; which is probably more accurate. I am just curious if you have heard that the tender trucks are incorrect for that engine's tender? I have heard this but would need to compare it to the brass model or photo's to verify. If you are interested in the Blue Comet, there is a video out there that is over an hour long specifically about it. The creator of the video was a gentlemen associated with Rutgers University. I have a copy of it somewhere. It's worth watching. Lots of good information and old pictures. It even talks about the wreck of the Blue Comet. I hope building this train brings you many hours of joy and then some.
      -Best Regards,
      Bill

      @RailserveJohn  4 роки тому

      Wow that’s great! Funny, I grew up about 10 minutes from Rutgers. I wouldn’t be surprised if the trucks are incorrect. You can tell it’s kind of a “cookie cutter model” although for around $300 I can’t complain. I would love to own one of the overland models. Wow what a special piece... I have been looking for one for some time now. I do see how the blue is more vibrant on the brass model. How does it run?

    Ah, yes...paint matching! So much fun! I model the WP and have a set of F units that I want to paint. Two in solid orange Pumpkin and the orange and silver. I was told that SP Daylight orange was a close match, but I have some Tru Color WP that might work. I remember seeing an old Lionel O Gauge Blue Comet, in it's original box, all the track and a transformer and it was something like 5K!

      Thanks for the comment Rey. I have always wanted to attempt this build and am glad I took the plunge. Although these kits do require a lot of work, I am very happy with the 2 I have completed so far. The Coach and Observation car are about ready for paint. I did see that Broadway Limited will be making Blue Comet coaches but they are just re painted PRR coaches and not so prototypical. I posted a couple more videos on this build showing a little more progress. Thanks for watching! -John

      @@RailserveJohnFor me, I have a Rivarossi Diner already that I'll be using for the "Giacobini" and an incoming Walthers CNJ baggage that a friend has. I was suggested to use a mix of MP Eagle Blue and D&H Blue for the main color and B&O "Bando Blue" for the secondary color (plus Tamiya Racing White for the cream stripes). Did you ever find out the exact matching color for the blues?

    • @RailserveJohn
      @RailserveJohn  4 роки тому +1

      Rey Castillo I ended up using D&H and Via Blue 50/50 and got a fairly close blue to the Broadway Limited locomotive. It is close enough for me and am happy with it. I used Navy Blue for the dark blue and that seems to be spot on. For the cream I used the interior tan shown in the video mixed with a little white. I would say 75/25. All of my paints were Tru Color. I mixed large amounts of the paint so I hopefully wouldn’t have to attempt another paint match. Bethlehem did make a brass dining car kit but they are hard to find. I was outbid on eBay for the kit and it went for well over $100.

      @@RailserveJohn I thought you might be interested in this, but a friend of mine managed to print me an ATS box to put on the front of the Comet and it completely changes the look of the locomotive. I used D&H Blue only as I tried your blend and it came out a little... dark, so I used pure D&H Blue and was happy. Hopefully if worse comes to worst (or however your supposed to say it) I can find someone to fix her for me. Maybe with a highly detailed UA-cam tutorial I could do it myself.
