- Following up his blockbuster western, "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" (1957), with a continuation of the Wyatt Earp-Doc Holliday saga, Director John Sturges hoped to reunite stars Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas for the sequel. When they proved unavailable, he put together a cast that included one of his leads from "The Great Escape," James Garner, cast against type, as Wyatt. Sturges' new film, "Hour of the Gun" (1967), written by Edward Anhalt, featured Jason Robards as Doc, veteran Robert Ryan as Ike Clanton and a cast of solid actors including such future stars as Monte Markham, Frank Converse and Jon Voight. It was Markham's first film. Shot in Mexico by legendary cinematographer Lucian Ballard ("True Grit," "The Wild Bunch"), lifelong bonds of friendships were created during the shoot. Unlike most movies about the Earp/Clanton shootout, "Hour of the Gun" begins with the gun battle at the O.K. Corral and then follows Earp on his vendetta. Perhaps it wasn't what audiences expected when the saw the violent widescreen presentation of TV's Bret Maverick hunting down and killing, in cold blood, survivors of the historic gunfight. Robert Ryan was a great Ike Clanton. He was one of the most under rated actors. I think I will watch this movie again tonight.

I had not seen "Hour of the Gun" for 20+ years-- until tonight. You're right, it does hold up. What a great western. I forgot how scenic the photography was. For his first film role, Monte Markham held his own against those heaveyweights. Markham is a great story teller. And he uses that deep baritone to great effect. Nobody plays a drunk like Jason Robards.
Great interview, Rob. I could listen to Monte for hours. Talk about name dropping, wow! Sturges and Ballard to begin with, amazing. I think Sturges is left out frequently when people discuss great directors. He knew how to tell a story on screen, and I don't think any other director could create more tension in a scene than he. Ballard was a genius. Jerry Goldsmith, the best movie composer ever IMHO did the score. That wonderful cast hanging out in a beautiful Mexican town in the 60's? Alas, I fear those days of freedom and license are gone forever...

As a kid watching television in the 1970s as soon as I would see Monte Markham turn up I figured it would be a minute or two before he was up to nefarious deeds. A wonderful actor.

Monte Markham has always struck me as a down to earth, decent man, and he does a great job of storytelling. I hope you have him back soon. As for the movie, I always considered it the first attempt to tell the whole Earp saga, even if it is uneven and not 100% accurate. If nothing else, it paved the way for Kurt Russell's somewhat more accurate version decades later. While I'm a stickler for authenticity, if the true story was ever turned into film, I'm not sure what kind of reception it would get. I enjoy these movies for what they really are, entertainment, not history.
Another great interview...Monte Markham is a great actor...AS an added bit...Monte Markham was in a great TV series, "The Second Hundred Years."
Always liked Mr. Markham in whatever he was in. Hadn't seen him in a long time.
I'm so glad to see this with Monte. I knew him first from The Second Hundred Years on TV that I just loved. He's great playing villains and good guys and he's done a bunch of both. Decades back I had an address list for celebs, and I actually got a personal response to a letter, which I've always remembered for being so kind. I even liked him as the new Perry Mason way back when, but my all time fave may have been his appearance on Alias Smith and Jones, which was just a hoot. Anyway, I'm happy as a clam to see this and hear some of his thoughts on the westerns!
I always liked Monte Markham. He seemed to have been in everything in the 1970s and then it was like he disappeared or maybe I disappeared from watching TV and movies.
I had no idea Monte Markham was still with us. I remember him from his TV show,”The Second Hundred Years” back in the 60’s. I always liked him.

use to pass james many many mornings , we both going to work,, him in the dark red & grey pick-up/rockford files. I caddied at riviera cc. One week an episode of the Rockford Files was setup in the front of the riviera country club front entrance, it was oil derrick. I regret, they gave me a grip job on the tv show but foolishly l went back on the PGA golf tour as a tour caddy which was great but l should of took that job with mr garners crew. Dean martin played alot of golf at riviera cc too.

Monte Markham is one of my favorite actors. It's not that he's so much better than anyone (although he was very good), it's just that his personality shone through in his performances. He could be a good guy or a bad guy and it worked. He was great on the Six Million Dollar Man (as the SEVEN Million Dollar Man), and what a lot of people don't know is that he was in strong consideration for the role of Steve Austin before the series began. He had a great physicality about him that would have worked in that role. (Lee Majors was a football player, and when he ran he looked great - but so did Monte! And both were great doing all the other physical stuff, too.) I just wish Monte had gotten more prominent roles in his career - he really had a ton of charisma.

Wow, I remember driving to a little movie house in Buena Park to see this great film. I've got a lobby card somewhere of Robert Ryan, Steve Ihnat, and Jorge Russek leaning on a rail and looking mean AF. Monte was always solid in every genre.
Absolutely love Monte Markham. He is terrific as a cowboy or in a suit and tie. He seems to be able to do it all, comedy or drama. I especially love that he appears to be a super nice guy in real life. Thank you! (PS Looking good!)

Many of the actors of Monte’s vintage have such a richness in their voices and the ability to project with clarity. That’s something lacking in modern films where I often find myself turning on English subtitles to make sense of some of the garbled dialogue.. Monte always reminded me of Richard Crenna

I remember when Monte played The Seven Million Dollar Man in "The Bionic Man". He was great in that! He was a mischievous bionic character with a dangerous temper. : ) I also liked him in "Ginger in The Morning" with Sissy Spacek.
Monte is extremely articulate and funny. The answers are not rehearsed and the humor is not forced. You can tell he's having as good a time as we are. I once had (a small part) the privilege of being in a movie with Charles Durning and he took all of us to dinner that night at a high-end restaurant in Houston, Texas and did exactly the same thing. None of us felt out of place with such a big star and he told tales of war, movies, theater, fellow actors and interspersed the narrative with some of the dirtiest (and funniest) jokes I had ever heard. I mention this in detail because I get the impression that Monte would probably be the same way if you were lucky enough to spend one on one time with him. Great interview and fabulous guest.

I'm my opinion I think the 2 best Wyatt Earps were Henry Fonda in My Darlin' Clementine, and James Garner in The Hour of the Gun. After reading his book and a lot of first hand accounts by people who knew Wyatt in the early days their fearless, no nonsense, quiet, low key, friendly, but quick to action personality description of him fits these two portrayals very nicely! Even if the story in both movies is a bit off of the historical fact track. Especially MDC. But still a great movie.

I always liked Monte Markam when I was a kid in the 60s' and he's still a nice guy today.
In the brief clip where Garner (as Earp) shoots a character by a train at night, that actor is Robert Phillips, who usually played villainous roles; a thug in "Darker Than Amber" & an Indian in "MacKenna's Gold" are two that come to mind.

For me Jim Garner was a tremendous talent. I think his most dramatic role was Support your Local Sheriff, his most dramatic scene was,when he put his finger in Walter Brennan 6 shooter.....hee hee. I miss these actors and the quality movies they made. He played Wyatt Earp quite well. I did not know that the movie,was a sequel to the one Burt made hahahahaha ( in the vain of Mr. Lancaster )😆😆.

Just saw this movie earlier, and before that, probably my favorite Garner movie, then Man Called Sledge.
I saw this movie for the first time as a kid back in the early 70's. It's by far the best Wyatt Earp movie I've ever seen bar none! I even had it recorded on VHS for years, till the tape went bad.

Great site...love this movie, it was short, fast moving, to the point...and cast was so good it would be impossible to replicate today and in the future
I really liked the story about John Wayne and Joel Mcrae. Although I am surprised that he didn't say Ben Johnson.
D@mn he has such a magnificent voice! I enjoyed very much his voiceovers in all those Military/Aerospace documentaries of the 1990s in the Discovery and A&E channels - before the Reality crap ruined them.
James Garner had a great light touch with comedy but did 2 other 'gritty ' western roles, A Man Called Sledge, and one of my favourite westerns Duel at Diablo, very versatile actor in the vein of James Stewart
Duel at Diablo is one of the great underrated westerns. Garner and Poitier are simply magnificent, as is Ralph Nelson's direction. The tense opening in the Utah desert is superlative.
Hour of the Gun Movie and Man Called Sledge, two of my favorite Jim movies in order.

Monte Markham has to be the long lost brother of Richard Crenna.
Garner also played in a second movie portraying Wyatt Earp along with Bruce Willis as Tom Mix. It was great movie, but I can't remember the name of it. The Bad guy was named Malcolm, (Played in STAR TREK Generations & Fantasy Island)

If there was any lack of success with this movie my guess would be James Garner was not playing his witty self as he did in many movies . I have not seen this one but just from the clips you showed that's my impression. Look forward to seeing it. Never imagined him playing Wyatt Earp
Good film, finish watching it earlier and recently, it was a serious role as Wyatt, way different than other Westerns like A Man Called Sledge, or his Marlowe PI movies and Rockford.
Like the person below this, I thought this was a good first attempt to tell the story though it did have some problems. I liked it enough to still remember parts of it, having not seen it since it was in theatres, long ago.
