Hi!!! So the PURM (Penn Undergraduate Research Mentoring) summer program lasted 10 weeks, but I continued with my position throughout the school year (so I'm still working there now and plan to continue this summer as well). The only difference between what I do now and what I did during the summer is that I no longer have to go to workshops, and I strictly do research assistant work. There are opportunities for all fields/majors, and students can work in labs that are outside of their school/major as well. So for instance, I'm a psych major but I could have worked in an engineering lab. Usually students stay on campus during this program, but because of COVID it was remote. It was a great experience and I definitely recommend it, especially for students who have never done research (plus you get paid so that's a bonus)! Hope this helps!!
