I turn 78 in Aug and agree music of the 70's was and still is very special. In this crazy world of today we could surely use a huge serving of Bread. I loved the rock music of the 70's but beautiful songs have and always will have a place in my heart.

As a DJ in the 80's, I played this song at countless weddings and knew it well. One late evening, I was teaching my teenaged daughter some songs on the keyboard. My wife had gone to bed, and gets up for nothing once she's tucked in. As I played "If", I revealed to my daughter that when I played this song in college it was guaranteed to attract girls to the piano from nowhere, like magic! As if on cue, my wife walked sleepily into the living room in her pj's, because she had heard the song, and my daughter and I had a good-natured laugh at its enduring power, all these years later! lol :-)

For those who just know this song❤️
    Lyrics:
If a picture paints a thousand words,
Then why can't I paint you?
The words will never show the you I've come to know.
If a face could launch a thousand ships,
Then where am I to go?
There's no one home but you,
You're all that's left me too.
And when my love for life is running dry,
You come and pour yourself on me.
If a man could be two places at one time,
    I'd be with you.
Tomorrow and today, beside you all the way.
If the world should stop revolving spinning slowly down to die,
I'd spend the end with you.
And when the world was through,
Then one by one the stars would all go out,
Then you and I would simply fly away…

@@visearms5774 Compared to today it's not even close. Programmers make things and people sound good today. So you think Jimmy Page only stole his music and didn't create it? He didn't even write songs for commercial success. Zep songs were too long for radio. Listen to Physical Graffiti and tell me who today could make that album? Everyone is influenced by someone else. Led Zeppelin was no different. But your example is pathetic.

I was 9 years old when I first heard this song. Brings back a flood of memories. Every time I hear this song I see my 9 year old self sitting under a shady tree daydreaming of a future life with a love of my life. The dream came true and have been happily married for 3 decades and have 2 adult daughters. There were times when “my love for life would run dry” and yes every time it happens my love would “pour herself” on me. Soon we are going to reach the twilight but I’m ok with it knowing that we’re going to be hand in hand facing it while looking back at the 9 year old daydreamer under a shady tree, smiling at each other.

My husband just tagged me on Facebook, with this video (he dedicated it to me). We met in the 7th grade, in 1982. We were friends, all throughout junior high school and high school. After H.S. graduation, we went our separate ways and made our own lives. 17 years later, I was looking through the White Pages, searching for the phone number of a restaurant, I wanted to place a take-out order with. I stumbled across his name... called him out of the blue. Ten months later, we were married and we're now going on our 15th wedding anniversary. We were blessed to find one another, at the perfect time. Thanks for the video. :)

When I was 18 l met a beautiful girl, and lt was love at first sight… but she had already a boyfriend, and it was their song. So as I was a guitar player, I studied this song to get into her heart…. But I failed.
Years passed and now I am a lucky husband and she married another man, and she is mother of a beautiful boy, too, rising a wonderful family……but every time I hear this song a little tear of blood drop from my heart, because I will never ever forget that impossible love…
…then you and I would simply fly away…

@@take942 I love this song simply because I grew up with this song. It was part of my teenage life. Whenever I hear the song, it reminds me of my past. It's like an old photograph or a written diary that invokes nostalgia, a warm homesick feeling, and a good feeling we remembered with someone we missed.
My daughter, who is 35 years younger, loved her old songs. Songs she used to listen to in her teen and early twenties. She said the same thing you said. Today's music is full of bullshit. There is nothing to relate to. Today's generation lacks the soul to appreciate fine music.
Every generation could only enjoy their good old songs. Songs that they heard when they were young, especially in their teenage and college years. They grew up with those songs, and the songs became part of the past life. That old melody harmonizes well with their whole being. Anything else just doesn't jive.
All the contemporary musics which you hated so much right now shall one day become the golden oldies for those who are now teenagers or college students.
Have a good day, Sirs and Madams.

@@davidlow6539 Yours is a wonderful heartfelt comment that I appreciate and can relate to. I just wanted to respectfully address a point you made towards the end of your comment.
My previously written critique of today's pop music does not mean that I hate it. It is just that I do not believe that today's pop music will be the great and timeless "golden oldies" in the distant future the way yesterday's pop music is. It has nothing to do with the idea that every generation feels their music is better than the previous generation's music.
Generally, pop music today is a product of today's souless and superficial recording industry and a culture driven by the desire to make a quick buck combined with the immature need to become famous overnight without having to take the arduous "journey" to get there.
The soulfulness in music, or any art form, comes from the singer, writer, artist, recording engineer, etc. having taken that arduous journey to get to the place of authentically expressing themselves through their own particular creative art form. That is why yesterday's music, from the Renaissance up through the 1980's or so, is generally timeless and resonates within our own souls. That is because deep inside us, we can relate to the music and lyrics on a soul level. So the music feels timeless because our souls are timeless.
Back in the 1990's my wife's art teacher at the Art Students League of New York in NYC, and a renowned artist as well, once wisely stated about art and painting and how it affects the viewer, "Art is not about the surface of the canvas. It is about the depth of the artist."
BTW, I have always loved the songs by Bread since they were first released. So very soulful.
