  • This fly is a match the hatch fly that matches the Sulphur mayfly of the East and Midwest in sizes #16-#20 as needed to imitate the naturals. It's particularly effective during Sulphur hatches to rising and just under the sub-surface feeding fish. This soft-hackled dry fly can be fished dry or wet or both in the same presentation, a "dret fly" if you will. Fish it dry through the surface drift or dry then pull it under when it starts to drags and fish it sub-surface as an emerging or sunken dun. The soft-hackled collar will move slightly even when dead-drifted, imitating the duns legs on the surface moving and trying to fly off the water. When fished as a dry fly, the fly will sit flush in the surface film making the same silhouette as the naturals. This is a great pattern for selective trout especially in the flat pools on spring creek and tailwaters, but also on freestone streams as it can be fished as a wet fly even in faster water. If you want to fish is solely as a dry fly and make it float better in faster water, use a deer hair wing instead of EP Point Trigger Fibers or just treat the fly with dry fly floatant.
