CDC Pale Morning Dun
This is a great summer dry/wet fly for fishing the western rivers PMD hatches. The soft-hackle collar has a slight amount of movement even when dead drifted on the surface to trigger strikes from selectively feeding trout. The CDC wing floats well in the pools of spring creeks and tailwaters where this species abounds. It can also be fished wet to imitate sunken crippled duns. Tie this is in #18 as well to imitate the smaller species found later in the summer into early fall.

Salmonfly
Переглядів 20028 днів тому
The adult Salmonfly is generally thought of as the most exciting dry fly fishing experience. The early season trout are hungry after winter and these are the largest bugs of the season. This combined with the fact that the Salmonfly adults are trapped on the water fluttering, causing a commotion and are easy targets sends fish into a feeding frenzy where they lower their otherwise general selec...
Salmonfly Nymph
Переглядів 88Місяць тому
The Salmonfly Nymph is a good pattern for prospect nymphing in many waters in the west including the Deschutes River, Madison River, lower Firehole River, Big Hole River, Yellowstone River and the Henry’s Fork. It is especially important to match in mid-May through mid-June on these waters when the nymph migrate to shore to crawl out onto land and hatch. During this time trout intercept the nym...
BRAHMA & CDC Soft-Hackled Nymph
Переглядів 307Місяць тому
The Braham & CDC is a double soft-hackle nymph that has great action and movement in the water. The two feathers act different went fished. The webby yet denser Brahma Hen Saddle feather creates an overall sturdier built look to the fly. The CDC hackle is much softer and moves more independently in the currents. The gold tinsel adds an element of segmentation to the body. This is a good fly for...
Spider Bite
Переглядів 397Місяць тому
This pattern is one of my favorites for prospect nymphing. The holographic tinsel reflects light and is very visible even in small fly sizes. The Orvis Spectrablend thorax has a small amount of reflectivity and sparkle also, but mainly serves as a contrasting proportiong to the slim abdomen. The soft-hackled collar is tied with a soft grizzly hen cape feather and has both contrast in the feathe...
Contrast Winged Wet Fly
Переглядів 1532 місяці тому
The Contrast Winged Wet Fly is a a good classic type design meant to be primarily as a prospecting fly pattern. It is at home in many water types but I think it shines in riffles and runs of freestone streams. This fly would be one of my first choices for fish with a nice bamboo fly rod. It will take you back. PMD Surface Emerger
Переглядів 4562 місяці тому
This mayfly emerger imitates the Pale Morning Dun and Pale Evening Dun found in many western waters. It’s a highly effective fly fished in the surface film to selectively rising trout. It can also be fished sub-surface to imitate either the nymph emerging into the dun or a crippled emerger that cannot make it to the surface. Either way, it’s imitating the most vulnerable life stage of the mayfl...
Sulphur PMD Bead Head Contrast Nymph
Переглядів 1572 місяці тому
This is one of my best prospecting flies as it can be fished deeper through holes and runs where the big fish live. The contrast dubbing body includes UV light reflecting synthetic dubbing combined with soft and buggy rabbit fur to combine into an eye catching appearance in the water. The Brahma Hen Saddle tail and hackle collar are very webby and have good movement in the water currents or eve...
Adams Winged Wet Fly
Переглядів 1512 місяці тому
This is my interpretation of the classic Adams dry fly turned into a winged wet fly. It incorporates the original's color schemes and overal design. This pattern is a good one for fishing freestone waters with wet fly presentation tactics. It's also a fun fly to tie. The contrast in the feathers is one of the main factors to the effectiveness of the fly as it catches the eye. Try this fly this ...
Grannom Soft Hackled Dry Fly
Переглядів 1783 місяці тому
This fly pattern is effective for imitating Brachycentrus adult caddisflies as a dry fly on the surface or as a sunken adult. The shuck is a sign of vulnerability that trout key in on when targeting their food. The bulkier body of the fly is another element that represents the caddis. Even dead drifting on the surface, the soft-hackled collar, representing legs, will have some movement from the...
UV Grannom Contrast Pupa
Переглядів 1893 місяці тому
The Grannom Caddis Pupa is a match the hatch fly pattern to imitate the swimming, rising pupal stage of the soon to emerge adult caddisfly. This stage is highly targeted by trout because it's more of a guaranteed meal than the adults that quickly fly off the surface. The shuck on this fly imitates the beginning of this emergence stage. It's a visual trigger for the trout. The Riverfly UV Contra...
Iso Emerger

This fly is intended as a match the hatch pattern for selective trout, especially for rivers like the Upper Delaware system that have good populations of this species and on which trout heavily feed through the summer months. The fly imitate an emerging dun, the most vulnerable life stage. Trout will rise and eat this fly even if there are not a lot of them on the surface as Isonychia are a fav...
Olive Stonefly Nymph
Переглядів 5033 місяці тому
This fly specifically imitates the Little Olive Stonefly that is found in many western rivers. It is also a good prospecting fly. The soft-hackled collar and tail are examples of how to use a gray Brahma Hen feather and an art marker to change the color for the fly. The Little Olive Stonefly has more movement built into it from the Hares’ Blend dubbing and some flash from the Holographic Tinsel...
King Nymph
Переглядів 1913 місяці тому
The King Nymph is one of my favorite prospect nymphing patterns because of the effectiveness of the materials and the appearance of life in the fly when it's in the water. Peacock herl is always a good material for nymphs because of it's iridescence. The rabbit dubbing's soft fur and spiky guard hairs move in the current and help the fly to have more action along with partridge feather soft fib...
Full Bloom Wet Fly
Переглядів 3734 місяці тому
This wingless wet fly is highly effective for prospect fishing. The shape of the hook is important to the overall appearance of the fly as it creates the impression of body movement. The goose biot adds segmentation to the appearance of the abdomen and the mottli...

Allen, do your ever fold the soft hackle feather completely before winding? Natural Bison hair matches the salmon fly exactly. Pick some up when you are hiking in Yellowstone. I think bright orange is way overused on salmon fly imitations. My samples show they have more rusty orange olive and are more bison brown black dominates the underside of the bug. I love your pattern style and will use for all my damp stonefly imitations. Thanks!

One thing I love about your tying is that you use natural materials. Something that has been lost in today's world. Nice to see a salmonfly pattern without foam. If you were to tie the same pattern in a golden stone adult what would your recipe be?? Thxs so much Allen I've learned so much from your tying!!

I would use Superfine Amber dry fly dubbing for the body with brown ribbing and Seal Brown mixed with Amber color for the head. The hackle and wing would remain the same. Thread would be Yellow. Thanks for the compliment about the materials, though I do incorporate modern synthetics tastefully as I find them good at creating different effects that contrast with natural materials in a complimentary manner.

What a great bug Allen!!! It’s such a breath of fresh air to see someone tying with natural materials! The fly tying world has turned into using so many synthetics. Thxs for showing how you bend your hooks. I would never have thought to use heat.

What color dubbing would you use for a sulpher and march brown as in the same pattern

    • @mcgeeflyfishing
      @mcgeeflyfishing 3 місяці тому

I like Superfine dry fly dubbing. The colors are pretty accurate in general though you always want to examine the natural mayfly body colors on each waterway you fish as they vary slightly. I would start with Sulphur Orange and March Brown Superfine mixed with a little tan Superfine dubbing and then compare to the naturals. You can mix more yellow into the Sulphur dubbing or more tan into the March Brown as required.

A really nice fly and great, you´re giving such a detailed explanation. Only you tricked me badly with the tail: Following the photo and the material-list the tail should have some pheasanttail-fibres, too. I was waiting for quiet a while for the magic trick, how to apply the pheasanttail after making the thorax, until I realized, it won´t come and you´re tying a different version...

I have a plume I bought years ago that is mottled but can't find it for sale anymore. Such is in the fly fishing and especially fly tying, things change fast. As a substitute you can use the fullest, light brown herl you can find. This seller has some nice colors, in this case caramel, though not mottled: www.ebay.com/itm/154812350383?var=454917457659&itmmeta=01HPGFFTWTV4SSZDPDGDNPP71H&hash=item240b88ffaf%3Ag%3A9foAAOSwI5JjfuqO&itmprp=enc%3AAQAIAAAA8HyJBjEx7Z6hN0wEUiuuAbbSSMn9pP%2B2RvD4SX4so1HWWat5xJipSswc3WLPRAE631jlCL7UdTQ0GGG0FP9rODaqYFSENavHklljdeCOZhsUcgGmWL1tmivb9xVIJK3uGddYN3UOnpwP7bxjC%2BCDNOfMCwdics4md0RO%2Be8fKSwy%2BeLkQWTex4izXol%2B4LgNMR7BUqsW1gVpcwzMWeTqVRqLai69a9gStM59daPkf7t7qZiRKUBJ8NBx21Mu4sVDDcvBtiWDyquYAJSV%2FY3wsOEi8mnMKsXQtNH%2FM9wqmlkV2x00yQsCAnXA9wlZ6N93oQ%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABFBMvq6_j7Rjight

I recommend the Caddis Gray ME for mayfly wings, the Spinner White for mayfly spinner wings and some brighter nymphal shucks and Lemon Grey for caddis wings and shucks. This fly is tied with Lemon Grey. If only one colore perhaps the Caddis Grey ME. But, buying the three I mentioned will allow you to use these for wings and shucks on many flies and each package will last a while.
