The very first time I was an extra, it was a restaurant scene. I was given linguine. It was cold but it still tasted very good, so I ate it because I was very hungry. As soon as we got done with the scene, the director says, “Okay, it’s time to eat.” We were taken into a different room. It was filled with an array of different foods.
I love this! I worked as an extra and loved it ! I watched (and still do) the video "Extra work RARELY turns into Acting work!" . I started training here locally and continue to train. I am happy to say that I landed a speaking role in the movie 5000 blankets opposite Anna Camp in my first role! I was fortunate but I keep training and joined the HWC as well. I owe so much much to you Wendy even though we have never met, you are an inspiration.
This info is absolutely correct. A buddy of mine did some extra work on a major, and I mean MAJOR TV series. The way he explained the process and the behavior that is expected of you is damn near word for word the way Wendy explained it to us. You're on a job, not a fan club meeting. Great video. Wendy, you need a donation tab. 🌴🍷😎🌴
Thank you I appreciate that. I just want to help actors be a successful as they can. I guess my team is coming up with some kind of thing called a Patreon? I don’t know I’ve got things to learn lol
Okay I watched the whole video and I feel like she never got to the part about how to actually get from extra work to speaking roles? 😭 Like do we reach out to those other casting agencies that don’t just cast extras? How do we find them? Other then take classes, I feel like she didn’t really tell us how to move up. Maybe I missed it? Please help 😂

I watch your video. Even though I know stuff, but I always keep an open mind because THERE IS ALWAYS that LITTLE piece of knowledge to learn. Acting to me is a sandbox with so many toys to play with
Thanks for the video! I’ve done tons of extra work, lol. Probably 100’s of background jobs since 2015. I’ve also been core for several tv shows. I’ve been taking private acting classes (on and off) since 2016. I had a speaking role in an independent movie that was never released and a few non speaking roles in local commercials. I’m ready to make the transition from background work to speaking roles. This video is right on time!
Hi Wendy, Thank you for bringing this topic up. I started my career as a background actor, and am working towards evolving to speaking roles.. I have tons of film work as BG, and always soak it all in.
I did learn a lot from doing extra work. In fact I think the three voucher rule for SAG/AFTRA should be replaced with X number of hours/gigs of extra work. I've seen PAs and 3rd ADs misuse the vouchers. You know what I mean.
I LOVE background work! Love being on-set and learning the business. But would love to have lines or get upgraded; I came close a few times though. I never bother the principals unless they approach me first; I know my place and role. I work “featured” roles now and lately trying stand-in. But still waiting for a role with lines………I’m told I have good comedic timing, so leaning into this also.
