Hi Jenna and Greg, blessings to all you great Americans from the great state of Texas. My wife's parents were Texan born and bred. Please be safe and stay warm and dry!
Due to a three day outage 20 or so years ago from a hurricane, I became a generator believer. After the hurricane, the summer heat kicked back in and everyone suffered, I purchased my first generator. I have upgraded since then to a propane/gas operated generator that is large enough to power the entire building. Thumbs up!
@@homesteadpilgrim Hello. nice video I did wonder why a Country with Americas wealth needed stand by generators, so asked a chap on youtube who like yourself fitted one, he said that he was told Americas electricity network was at peak demand all of the time so failures (outages) were quite common
@@neildelaney5199 I don't think it's so much the ability of the network to supply electricity, but more the ability to _distribute_ it. In my area, most of the main power lines are overhead. these lines can come down for any number of reasons; Wind, ice, a pole being hit by a vehicle, or, something that happens occasionally in my neighborhood, a squirrel gets up on an overhead transformer and shorts it out. Much like in a home, that trips a circuit breaker on the pole, and the power company has to come out to reset it. they usually come out in decent time, but before they can reset the breaker, the need to inspect the lines that come off that pole going through the neighborhood.
@@JohnBGood-kq3ul Thanks for clearing that up, I really had no idea, just repeating what a chap said on youtube,, It's like that in England , a flake or two of snow and some people are without power for days, many thanks
My response is from my experience living in the Northeast. In places like California, they sometimes have brownouts during periods of peak usage, so your comment could also apply.
After waiting 10 months for my 22KW unit, I am now in business (November 10, 2021). Like life insurance, it's something you spend money on hoping you won't need it, but I've spent my last miserable night getting up and feeding a 5KW portable generator that powers only my essential fridge and freezers via extension cords and power strips.
Today finally came when Wired Electric came out and installed a new engine into our 20KW Whole House Generator. The old engine had low compression on one cylinder. The generator was 2 years out of warranty. After calling Generac and sending them the serviceman's diagnose of the engine they deemed it "Manufacture Defect". The original warranty was 5 years. I had the generator 7 years. The new Generac Generators now carry a 7 year warranty. I got a call from Generac telling me they were going to cover the cost of a new generator. The serviceman worked on it from 11:30 to 3:45. He put oil in it and fired it up. It ran great. I ask him how long have he seen these generators run without stopping. He told me over 3 weeks when the power came back on. At that time you change the oil and filter and put it back in standby mode.
I bought a house in rural Iowa about 15 years ago. About a week after we moved in the power went out. The neighbors that lived further down the gravel road warned that it could be days before the power came back on. One neighbor wanted to loan us a spare generator but they said it had been sitting for so long with gas in the tank that they were sure it no longer worked. So out to the big box store I went to buy a generator and transfer box... I had the thing wired into the breaker box by that night and it ran for 4 days before the power came back on. It did see a lot of use in the 10 years that I lived there. When we did have outages they rarely lasted less than a few hours.
My age is the factor in considering whether to install a generator. Getting quotes saying that you need a 20KW generator, but doing some research and talking with a knowledgeable person; it was determined what is needed a 14KW, the size what is needed by appliances in the home not the size of your home squared footage is what I was told. Disabled vet payment monthly from VA stay within your budget. Cost I figure $9,000 for everything. All the information here is very helpful, thanks to all who provided it.
I had a 22KW generac standby generator at my previous house and it got me thru a few power outages in the country and I just got one for my new home back in November 2020, were about to have some winter weather here in Ark so may get to use it for the first time..
Hey darklord! Our power went out due to this ice storm here. Went out at 7:30 am and still out...the generator is running smoothly and providing all the power we need. Hope you have success with your generator and it keeps you safe and comfortable!
Louisiana Story: My neighbor installed a Generac. We were hit by "back to back" Hurricanes Laura and Delta. The first night without power his generator stalled. In the morning he found that the air intake was clogged with dead misquotes. He cleaned the intake and she fired back up. So far she hasn't stalled again. In my SW Louisiana Parish we have a misquote control program. Airplanes and trucks spray evenings and nights during the warm months to control the pests. After a bad hurricane the planes can't fly if any of the communication towers or lights are damaged so misquotes quickly multiply. This year swarms kill are number of cattle. We love south Louisiana and deal with the suffering and loss hurricanes can cause. The last year has been tough in the Lake Charles area. Two hurricanes, COVID, and record ice storm for us, and now extensive flooding from annual May rains. Some have not made repairs yet from the storms. We are 5th generation and not going anywhere. Come visit Louisiana. Eat Crawfish and Louisiana rice. Enjoy the Cajun music and culture. Lassiz le bon ton roulet. I'm going to install a house generator as my neighbor did.
Hi Chip! Awesome story. So glad you are getting a generator as you are definitely at risk of power outages. My wife and I loved our vacation to New Orleans two years ago and we can confidently say there is no better food on the planet than New Orleans. Thanks for watching and be safe!
I feel your pain we had 5 days without power during the Texas winter storm this year some had it worse and colder, and no fireplace because well it never happened before. Side note during Hurricane Harvey we did not loose power at all, but yesterday we had a quick thunderstorm and lost power for 7hrs, I'm done lol. Also note that Germany electric grid is underground hence why they barely don't see any outages. German engineering is the best! Thanks for the video!
There are power grounding losses in underground systems. Also, if the ground gets too dry, the cables are stretched by the shrinkage and sometimes break, and if there is too much rain, underground junction boxes can be flooded and shorted out.⚡
Good info. I live in the city in Va and we dont have outages often but im anticipating more in the future. After considering a portable unit, i decided to look into one of these. Not cheap by any means but a good investment overall. Installers are coming to install mine next week. Mine will be 18k Generac with a whole home switch. BTW, Generac is the best generator for the money IMO.
We lived in a suburb from 2001 to 2018 and didn’t have any power outages, so I personally would not recommend a generator in the suburbs unless you have experienced repeated power outages
7:15 Just got through my latest power outage (Chenango County, New York). This time it was 36 hours. Power outages are unfortunately "routine" and it appears that they are getting more frequent and longer with each passing year. I have a generator (gotta have one), but it is all manual operation. Requested a quote for smaller Generac system yesterday.
Ouch! that is a long time, 36 hours. Ours cost about $12k more than two years ago, so I assume there has been some cost increase. Good luck with your new standby generator purchase!
We had the generator serviced two weeks ago (yearly maintenance) and the 1,000 gallon propane tank was filled around the same time. The propane company normally only fills the tank to 80 to 85% due to expansion, etc. So, after three days, the tank read 65% filled. We were able to do everything we normally do (3 adults in the home). I think that a full tank should last a week and change. Good luck.
I would guess that 1700 sq ft would require less than 22k, however, just to be absolutely sure, please consult with your installer on the best size to fit your specific requirements.
Very informative video, thank you. Have you ever run your generator for an extended period of time during an outage? About how many gallons per hour did the generator burn please?
I was just telling people about the storm that hit AR in 2000. I was a kid when it hit. I live in Texas now and am dealing with the current storm. In my opinion the storm in 2000 was much worse. I learned the importance of having an alternative heat source. GNRC stock is gonna shoot up I bet!!!
Hi LMH! Yes, I agree the AR 2000 ice storm was much worse for us with 11 days without power. That was the catalyst for us to decide that whenever we move to the country again, we will invest in a generator. I do see Generac stock going up for sure. Mother nature cannot be predicted or stopped when she decides to do her thing. Best to prepare... Take care.
I'll answer it for you. Here in SE Louisiana, if you get water that high, you'll need to shut the generator off because that water will be in your house and more than likely covering the outlets anyway. This is if your house isn't raised. If it is, make sure your generator is raised as much as well.
Howdy HP, I ordered a Generac 22 KW from Northern,,,they did not mention about a service contract. Where do I get that? I am with you, it is worth it. Please let me know. Many thanks for your video..
Hi Rock! Congrats on your generator. As far as a service contract, I would check with a local reputable generac contractor and have them do the install as well as engaged in a periodic maintenance contract. Our contractor, Alternative Power, is highly reputable in our area and has a very large footprint of installs and service contracts. Good luck and keep me posted. You will enjoy peace of mind with that generator!
I live in upstate western New York. Just had my Generac installed today! Six month wait with, thankfully, no outages. Liked your video. Waiting for an outage. Heh heh. Is that so wrong?
Hey Craig! Not wrong at all, unless you are superstitious! when we had ours installed I foolishly said "OK, Mother Nature... bring it!" Well, she brought it last week and the generator carried us through awesomely! Good luck and fair skies to you and yours.
I have not done that estimate. The generator burned through almost 20% of the 1,000 gal propane tank in 3 days. It might take $900 or so for a full fill up. But, we also have a dual fuel two zone HVAC that burns propane when it is colder outside,so that was feeding of the tank to. I assume the highest cost is the fuel source. Good question.
@@homesteadpilgrim thanks for response looking in to getting one but was trying to figure out cost of keeping it running for a week or two. Have had to severe ice storms hit , in the midst of one now and probably will be without power for several weeks
No problem, we were only out of power for 3 days last weekend, but like I said in 2000 we suffered through an 11 day outage. In cases of long outages, I wouldn't be too concerned about optimizing costs. It is more important to keep your family safe and comfortable in those rare instances of super duration outages than worrying about $. That is just my opinion of course. Spend the money to take care of yourself and your family. It is more like an insurance policy... Good Luck!
Hi BigBrother! It lasted 3 days running constantly in our case, but I would definitely shut it down periodically for maintenance checks. It should last as long as you have fuel to run it and you do preventive maintenance.... We think this generator will provide full value if it lasts 10 years or more.
Hi Charles. That is awesome. We lived just to the west of Greenwood on Hwy 10 at the west lot on Mt Zineche road - 4706 W Hwy 10, Hackett. I built the horse stable you can see from google maps and I also dug the pond overflow that goes north to south.. amazing you can see it still on google maps. Those days living out in rural AR were magical for me. Thanks for watching!
what does yours run off of propane or natural gas .I wish there was another way besides this ,I know that solar and wind do not work .I would love for someone to come up with alternative power I don't loose power that often .Winter is the worst I live in southside VA and lost power during epic ice storm but before that not very often since 2004 .In NJ I never really lost power and I lived there all my life .But hubby and I just celebrated our 48th wedding anniversary on the feb. 18th in the dark House is is 2x6 stud walls and attic has 6 feet of insulation and floor are insulated but only electric here besides propane .My house is all electric .Most important is heat pump and well and power for freezer and fridge and lights
Hi Sissy! Our generator runs off of propane. We have a 1,000 gallon tank buried in the ground. Another option for us is to burn firewood since we have a ton of it here on our property. That would be in our fireplace only for heat, not power. Only when we moved or have lived in the country have we ever had outages. With large storms, everyone is at risk but out here in rural NC, we experience enough outages that we think the generator is worth the investment (and peace of mind). Congrats on your 48th! Woohoo! We are celebrating our 36th this August. Time flies. Hope you get yourselves setup to be safe in the future. Get a generator! Thanks for watching!
Europe is so densely populated that almost all of the electrical wires are underground. The dependability is wonderful, but over here, we’d balk at the cost.
Yes, the US landmass is so vast, it would be expensive to replace all the legacy infrastructure. Also, the European infrastructure had the "benefit" of being utterly destroyed and therefore, rebuilt from the ground up. Not to mention the absorption of East Germany that didn't have modern infrastructure until the Germany's 'united. I'm sure there are many other reasons that we are behind the curve, but until we get modernized, a generator seems to be our only option.
I agree with anyone that has done the math and determined if an investment has a good enough business case. In our world out in the sticks, the business case is justified. Good luck selling your unit!
My thoughts and prayers are going out to all of you in TX, AR and the swath of the blessed rural USA between there and NC! Be safe out there and take care of your families! Hope your power returns quickly!
This is brutally loud, and my neighbors would not be happy with me. Why can't you and the other generator manufacturers look at the Malie DCA-45MZ Generator, which is quiet by design rather than loud and putting a bunch of installation around it.
You are talking apples and oranges Gord. To begin with, the Denyo generator you refer to is a diesel unit, not LPG/NG. Most diesel generators only come with a 24 hour run belly tank, so it might add considerable cost to have to get storage capacity for beyond that. Further, the unit you refer to isn’t providing power at the 60hZ standard. The denyo is running at 50. And the machine noise is obviously going to be quieter on a machine running at 1800 vs 3600 rpm. I don’t think the homeowner here likely wanted to invest the additional 6-9k necessary for a unit running at 1800 rpm. With that said, for the gentleman who posted this. Why Generac? Did you consider other brands such as Cummins, Kohler, or Briggs and Stratton? I’m just wondering other than “I want power”, what were the factors in choosing Generac specifically? Certainly their marketing is the best but there are arguments to be made in favor of some of the other manufacturers. I’m not knocking your decision I’m just very curious what the determinative factors are. In addition, lots of other commenters mention Generac but no one mentions the others in this thread at all
Brian, we shopped around for a trusted installer and maintenance provider and Alternative Power won out as they are well known in our area. The service aspect was more important than the make to us
@@BrianD-ds4dx I'm not a mechanic or an engineer. The barrier for me to purchase one when living in the city is the noise. And in my opinion, the manufacture the solves this problem will have the upper hand.
@@homesteadpilgrim that is a huge factor. I really appreciate that response. If it’s unclear, I’m in the home and commercial generator business and we shifted away from Generac about 5 years. I won’t get into all the reasoning BUT…a good install and regular maintenance by qualified folks are without a doubt HUGE factors in long term run of the unit
very nice guy but 4mins in and still zero review, just a vid on why you purchased it. How about review of cost analysis, does it work well, instantly? etc.
Hi Alex, apologies for not hitting your key points of interest. Let me try here. We compared several vendors and installers and the costs were comparable. Honestly, we settled on a highly recommended local installer, Alternative Power. They had a reasonable quote of $12K that included labor, the unit, two transfer switches to cover our two 200 AMP panels, and testing. We signed up for their yearly maintenance service that is about $220 per year. Going into our 3rd year with this unit, we are very pleased with its performance and reliability. For the many sustained power outages, the unit kicked on in seconds of the power outage and ran flawlessly through the outage. I hope that helps some. Take care and good luck
Hi Jesse, see my next video where I check the oil... but, as I explained in the video, I was away at the office when the maintenance technician did his thing... I wish I was there to film it. This was just a review and discussion of what they checked. Take care!
Hi Zach, yep, we have lost power for an hour today due to the thunderstorms. Our grid is definitely fragile enough that a generator is a must have out here.
generator just doesn’t work in the cold below 20 degrees. My generac is a complete piece of shit, never starts up, right after a tune up and a cold weather kit! Do yourself a favor, do NOT buy one of these plus they don’t normally last more than 6 yrs if your lucky
We haven't had an issue yet with our Generac, so sorry to hear of your travails and I hope the warranty or your install team was able to help you resolve the issues.

Hey Craig! Not wrong at all, unless you are superstitious! when we had ours installed I foolishly said "OK, Mother Nature... bring it!" Well, she brought it last week and the generator carried us through awesomely! Good luck and fair skies to you and yours.
How much was everything if you don't mind me asking?
What would you estimate the hourly or daily cost would be to run this for extended periods? Thanks
Good Luck!
The propane 22kW Generac uses 2.5gal/hr at 50% load and 3.9gal/hr at 100% load.
Nice video..what was the total cost?
$12k
How much is the outside unit?
Hi D Elam. 3 years ago, our system was $12K fulling installed. I'm sure with inflation that cost is going up. Good luck.
How long can it last how many days or hrs
Hi BigBrother! It lasted 3 days running constantly in our case, but I would definitely shut it down periodically for maintenance checks. It should last as long as you have fuel to run it and you do preventive maintenance.... We think this generator will provide full value if it lasts 10 years or more.
My Dad grew up outside of Greenwood.
How much did your System cost including installation?
Ours cost $12K. For two transfer switches, three smart modules, labor and materials.
@@homesteadpilgrim
What was the cost of propane tank, installation of tank and fuel fill up? Thanks.
@@homesteadpilgrim What's the advantage of two transfer switches? Can this power a panel and a sub panel? Just got a quote last week $15,500 in Texas
Ours powers our whole house. We were on a wait list for 13 months to get it. Total cost with installation 10k
How large is your home? I'm hoping I won't need a generator that powerful. TIA! - another ERCOT-vulnerable Texan

99% uptime is not too good, that would be 3.65 days a year. He must have meant 99.9% uptime.
Makes sense to me, thanks, Garrett
I didn't see any revolution in germany these past few weeks... And the winter storms knocked out thier green power
haha, I'll have to ask my friend if he sees the Volk taking to the streets with torches and pitchforks
@@homesteadpilgrim hahahahahahaha... Exactly...
what does yours run off of propane or natural gas .I wish there was another way besides this ,I know that solar and wind do not work .I would love for someone to come up with alternative power I don't loose power that often .Winter is the worst I live in southside VA and lost power during epic ice storm but before that not very often since 2004 .In NJ I never really lost power and I lived there all my life .But hubby and I just celebrated our 48th wedding anniversary on the feb.
Changed the oil and plugs. Everything else is fake “checked” mumbo jumbo
Fake news? LOL, ok. Thanks for watching.
Bet the neighbors appreciate that dog racket😢
We are in the middle of 24 acres , wooded. Our neighbors have a kennel of dogs that out bark ours, lol. Never had complaints on either side
I heard just the opposite. They never start when they are suppose to.
Ours has always started up when we had power outages.
I will share it with the governor of Texas
Hi Mike! What policy do you think he should pursue in the aftermath of the storm? Just curious what folks in the great state of Texas are wanting.
FOR SALE;
Huge Generac paperweight sitting in my yard. Owned 6 years but has less than 30 hours on it.
I agree with anyone that has done the math and determined if an investment has a good enough business case. In our world out in the sticks, the business case is justified. Good luck selling your unit!
You still selling this? Price, location?

😂 i bet you might consider one now one of the best investments in your home you can make
This is brutally loud, and my neighbors would not be happy with me. Why can't you and the other generator manufacturers look at the Malie DCA-45MZ Generator, which is quiet by design rather than loud and putting a bunch of installation around it.
Great idea
I like stories
I like to drop kick drones too
very nice guy but 4mins in and still zero review, just a vid on why you purchased it.
@@homesteadpilgrim Appreciate your response, very helpful
I’m sorry I couldn’t hear anything because of the dogs can you start over please ?
Haha, dogs are awesome and unpredictable as all get out. Thanks for watching.

Hi Jesse, see my next video where I check the oil... but, as I explained in the video, I was away at the office when the maintenance technician did his thing... I wish I was there to film it. This was just a review and discussion of what they checked. Take care!

Germany isn't nearly as big as the US - and if you're out in the sticks , you just need to wait for a man to drive out and fix it.
Hi Zach, yep, we have lost power for an hour today due to the thunderstorms. Our grid is definitely fragile enough that a generator is a must have out here.
@@homesteadpilgrim I hope the generator is working well
Yep, working flawlessly 4 years in
generator just doesn’t work in the cold below 20 degrees.
SOON YOU ALL WILL SEE SOMETHING REALLY NEW ABOUT ALTERNATIVE GENERATOR NO FUEL, NO SOLAR, NO WIND
