    Awesome, concise info, that is well documented. It was the only video I watched, and the new trailer wiring is working great. Thank you!

    Nice video thanks, one tip... every auto mechanic i have asked has told me those blue squeeze connectors are junk. They have a bad reputation of not providing a stable dependable connection. I was advised to use push-in connectors or the standard tube style connectors which both provide very dependable connections. It can be very stressfull to go through all that to change your wiring but cheap out on the connectors and then have to go back and trace where the problem is. Also be sure when ordering your wiring harness, you get the split-y (aka wishbone) style harness.

      @@bruce9648 Thanks for watching...Message me if you have problems... Tips: Start with a good brand new light and wire kit. Anywhere there is a screw make sure its touching BARE metal. Make sure the hitch/receiver on your vehicle has some paint rubbed off...must have bare metal contact for ground..good luck

    Those wire nuts may work in freshwater but in saltwater I would HIGHLY recommend a butt connector with heat shrink tubing. Otherwise, nice job

      If I go to all the trouble to rewire a trailer I'm sure as hell not gonna go cheap and use wire nuts for the connections. That's just being lazy.

    Will the waterproof connectors work for the running lights on the side or is the wiretap splice the better choice??

    • @addismultitasking3504
      @addismultitasking3504  3 роки тому +1

      waterproof connectors are better, the wire tap has a pc of metal in it that will rust

    The Tow Smart (item #1413) set I purchased says "4-way flat" and has 4 wires, 24ft long...a green, yellow, brown, and white ground. The colors on the old wires coming out of the vehicle connector are faded and not discernible. It has 5 wires including a ground wire.
    Question: Do I have the wrong harness? Should the new harness have 2 brown wires, one for each side?

  • @midnightrider2342
    @midnightrider2342 3 роки тому

    Your old wiring looked like each side had a long ground wire running from the bulbs to the front of the trailer (like my boat trailer does). How exactly did that work as far as where the other end went? Did you wire both ground wires together and connect them to the ground terminal on the wiring harness? I'm having hell getting my boat lights working, and about to redo all of it.

    • @addismultitasking3504
      @addismultitasking3504  3 роки тому +1

      On the rear lights there will be a white ground wire that I put on to the bolt that grounds the light to the trailer I do not run a ground up to the front of the trailer you just ground your front wiring harness to the trailer and that makes the trailer ground so anything you screw to the trailer will be grounded

      @@addismultitasking3504 Sorry, it looked like your old wiring was the same as mine. I might have been wrong. Here's my situation: I have ground wires (on both sides of the trailer) that run from the trailer taillight bulbs all the way to the front of the trailer. So far I haven't been able to find any type of wiring diagram that resembles this. I don't know what to do with two ground wires when I'm connecting them to the wiring harness. I just assume I would wire them together and connect them to the ground terminal on the plug. I had the lights working (somewhat) for a while, but actually think I may have blow a fuse on my pickup.

    • @addismultitasking3504
      @addismultitasking3504  3 роки тому +1

      Well that would work but I believe your trailer will have to be connected to the hitch on your vehicle to make them work..

    • @addismultitasking3504

      If your vehicle has a tow package it will have a separate fuse for those lights... Or it's simply a dirty connector pin

    NEVER wire nuts on ANYTHING boat trailer, marine or automotive they are strictly for home use.. Crimped heat shrink is the proper way. That is the recipe for Corrosion / green gremlin!!!

    Those little in wire tap things are junk. Go to your hardware and find something that can be made water tight.
    Those things are what uhaul dealers use to wire you up and get you out the door. They will go bad somewhere between the time they are put on and when you really need them.

    To teach people like me that have never worked on trailer lights, you need to show every step, not do it, then just say what you did...As you did on the side lights. I have never connected wires or tried to troubleshoot wiring before, but am fixing to replace corroded ones. . Also, you would help people if you explain what color wire is for what function. I have learned that already. I have also been attacked by ants while laying under the trailer to see how the wires run. Lesson one..dont do that.
