    Thanks man ! Wired my lights on my freshly painted boat trailer and tail lights had no power. Just couldn't figure it out. I watched your video and and when you explained proper grounding and the need to scrape all rust and paint away to ensure a good ground ! I realized my fresh paint was the possible problem. Lol I had a solid paint barrier blocking all current. 🤦‍♂️ problem fixed just like that. Waisted an hour but thanks to watching your video first. I didn't treat it all out and return it to the store. Haha I was that close ! Thanks again 👍

    A suggestion for boat trailers. When getting you trailer ready to put in, or remove from the water, disconnect your wiring harness. That will keep your tail lights, or brake lights from being lit up underwater, and possibly causing a hot light bulb to shatter, in the cold water.

    JD: Great video, good concise explanations. I ve got a 10ft sailing dinghy on a good trailer with a C frame construction, so I don t have the issue with feeding it through tubular frame.
    I liked where you placed the ground wire. I m guessing that I will need to replace that self tapping screw every season even if its a SS screw. The galvanized trailer will help create oxidation of that fastener if left all winter and spring. But your plan to use the strong feed wire on both sides of the frame straightened out my thinking. I was planning on just pulling the new wires from rear to middle like I rewired a 22 ft boat at one time, but your plan in solid and is less foolproof. Thanks! LSR

    Such a great video! Although a step you can skip. Is why don't you just cut the old wiring harness and just attach new harness to it from the front. And pull it out the back. Then you don't need to find a wire/string/etc having to pull from back to front and then again front to back for the new one.

    Most trailer problems would go away if when wiring you add a extra wire for ground going to each light. Water corrosion just ruins those frame grounds after a while.

    My advice is go ahead a run a ground wire all the way, AND ground it somewhere to the frame also. Some folks say "Let the ground come thru the trailer ball of the vehicle". No and no. Go ahead, run the ground wire, go water tight LED Lights, and be done with it. The bare metal will rust, lights will flicker or get dim over time, do it right and be done with it.

    Rigger's Tip: NEVER use a rope or string. The line must be rigid, lightweight and a small diameter. A shift cable makes an excellent "fishing line", the longer the better. I have different lengths, up to 18 feet, even longer. Cut the ends, elec. tape it off, grease a tad if you need it... proceed. Also, disassemble a cable, the different types of wires within it, or the guts of the cable, also offer a variety of good, sturdy fish lines. ***Take an old cable, cut the ends, skin the outer coating and you'll see what I mean. Good luck! 🙂👍

    Well, you could film and hit the brakes at the same time, just put down the recording device, prop it up, use a mirror, a kid, the wife, etc. Good video, if people woild stop and think about what's about to happen they don't need to fish wires though, just use the existing ones, which you could have done too.

    I like it...but I'm perplexed as to why you just didn't just use the old existing wires to pull through the new wire harness-presuming they are in reasonably good condition to make the trip through the frame?? As an added benefit, you would be hard pressed to get the color coded wire wrong. Lastly, with all those through bolts up front, why drill another hole in the trailer for the ground wire? Just strip back the insulation and put on a large ring connector. Otherwise, loved this video.

  • @johnbyrd9226
    @johnbyrd9226 4 роки тому +1

    Wouldn't it have been easier when starting the harness down the tube at the front of the trailer to just open
    the swing away coupler and feed the wires down the main tube?

    • @JDSOutdoors
      @JDSOutdoors  4 роки тому

      No because the plug end is fat and even harder to feed through the front if done that way. Ask me how I know lol. You have to either remove the coupler or tear the wiring back out and start over if the coupler is welded

    • @johnbyrd9226
      @johnbyrd9226 4 роки тому +1

      @@JDSOutdoors I am talking about opening the swing away joint right behind where the wiring harness comes through the grommet. Thats got to be easier. My trailer doesn't have a swing away coupler nor grommets in the pass-through holes. I had to do mine like your video shows, but thought having the main tube open would have eliminated much of the "fishing" part.
