The Avro Lancaster is a British Second World War heavy bomber. It was designed and manufactured by Avro as a contemporary of the Handley Page Halifax, both bombers having been developed to the same specification, as well as the Short Stirling, all three aircraft being four-engined heavy bombers adopted by the Royal Air Force (RAF) during the same wartime era.
In 1943 the Lancaster was part of a raid over the ruhr area with the aim of suppressing the region's industrial output. A lot of civilian were terrorized both by the nazis and the bombing. So were part of my family who died during the bombing of Duisburg. The Lancaster project is some kind of process of coming to terms with the past. It was important to defeat the nazi terror regime but as in all wars the civilian losses were pure tragedy.
The Ruhr area was the target of many intense attacks during the years 1940-45. With the so-called first Battle of the Ruhr (spring and summer of 1943), the attacks reached an unprecedented intensity and were directed for the first time against the population. The goal was not only to destroy weapons production but also to destroy the morale of the population.
The people in the Ruhr area had to suffer under the bombs and the rule of the Nazis at the same time, who had declared "total war" in Berlin shortly before the bombing of the Ruhr. This led to the outcry among the population, "Dear Tommy, fly on, only the Ruhr workers live here. Fly on to Berlin, they all cheered 'yes'."
This statement, placed under the wings of the aircraft, represents the central ambivalence of liberation and suffering alongside the 3D typography of 43-44 and Ruhr.
My good friend Erick Miotke put these thoughts into his fantastic composition which supports the animation in an impressive way.
Music: "warmachine contradiction" from Erick Miotke
Here's what he says to his composition: "the track for tom's lancaster model and film is to be understood as a nod to the heroic pilots of these warmachines, just as to the civilians who experienced the hell unleashed on them in the german city targets. it is a contradiction expressed in the two different parts in the track. heaven and hell. with a painful but peaceful ending."
The fantastic kit from Border Model (Molds were developed by Wingnut Wings) in 1/32 is distributed by Modelbau Koenig. www.modellbau-...

This video leaves behind the realm of modelling and is purely in the realm of art... Just Brilliant!
Thank you very much 😊
Very well put! Amazing work! Really inspiring!
This is the most artistic diorama I’ve ever seen
A model of a powerful weapon of war at the centre of an exhibit on the moral ambiguities of war. Unique.
Thanks a lot 😊
That's just so good. The model of the diorama in front of the aircraft and the people like ghosts around the periphery are just magical. Outstanding.
Back in the 70's when I was a teen. I started building models. This is the stuff I dreamed about doing with my models, but never could. It's amazing to me how far we have come with this hobby. And I'm sure as time passes it will stagger the mind what we can do next.
First time i have ever seen a Build video, Model and Diorama as a Diorama. Outstanding work.
This video tells a story so much more powerful than how to create a diorama. The details and poses of the figures makes it a story of the people, not just the models.
Thank you
This is well beyond plastic modeling and dioramas, this is pure Art. We are in another world.
Thank you very much 😊
Congratulations for achieving Gold and Best of Show at EME Lingen 2023!
Now why am I not surprised to learn this modeller has won major competitions? I would have been more surprised to learn he hadn't.
Thank you 😊
I have modeled and followed the hobby for 50 years,…this build, presentation and video is mind boggling. Well done sir.
I'm happy you like it 😊
Stumbled across your channel, due to my love of the Lancaster. You have taken modelling to an art form. Speechless 😊
I'm happy you like my little experiments. Feel free to explore my other videos 🙏
A fantastic masterpiece by a true master 👏
Thank you very much 😊
Your work is absolutely a masterpiece.
Truly inspirable. Thank you
I'm happy to hear
Congratulations Tom. This mere mortal of a model builder bows down before you. There are some fantastic and very talented model builders on UA-cam, however none of them can hold a candle to what you have created here. A true masterpiece. You are the ‘Jimi Hendrix’ of model building. Unbelievably talented and creative. It’s my humble opinion that you may one day be equaled by others, but never bettered. Thanks for all of your work.
Are you financially compensated for what you do here? If not then you bloody well should be!
Thanks for your kind words 😊
This is simply amazing -a work of art.
Thank you 😊
Surely this is work performed for a real museum??!
This is such a completely thought out and executed project, it's like a masterclass in every single element required for a world class museum exhibit!
And every one of the specific details in the museum elements for this Lancaster, specifically the heartbreaking lettering quotes, the video display!!, the display barrier rope, figures.
The floor surface finishing and colours, graphic design layout, the individually cut letters?!? This is beyond perfectionism into exceptionalism. What normal mortal does that? Let alone has the skill to execute it...
(and this is on top of the aircraft itself).
I've subbed a few creator/ craft/ scale model channels, all amazing. But this is on another level.
Thanks for your kind words. The museum idea isn't of a specific museum nor will it be placed there - currently 😅
And don’t forgot the stop motion filming which is a skill in itself
@@crisisguy21 OMG that also Blows. My. Mind. (Realising the effort, planning & precision and I bet dozens of little tricks to make it work we don't even see).
Tom, you've made some awesome stuff over the years, but this really goes above and beyond. This is Art with a capital A and an absolute masterpiece. You should be very proud about this. Everything about this. The clear visitors are perfect, they remind me of time lapse ghosts walking, standing, around a scene. The "screen" is a superb idea and the addition of seating that's actually also a slogan.... the roped off area.....wow. Just wow.
Meine Fresse, ist das genial.
I'm really happy you like it and my ideas become clear. Thanks for your kind words 😊
I am ambivalent whether to be inspired or just lay down my tools and give up! Awesome!!!
ABSOLUTE GENIUS! Modeling masterpiece. Congratulations Tom
Thank you 😊
What an amazing way to display the model, fantastic work
I'm pleased to hear you like my little experiment
Stopping by for a little chill out music and some Grigat magic just never gets old.
You Sir have reached a Grand Master level!! Hats off
Thanks a lot 😊
This spectacular diorama just raised the game by a million at least, the possibilities are endless using 3 D printing, and you just nailed it. Thank you.
Thank you very much 😊
Great work Tom!
Stunning work on all levels
Amazing, well done
Incredible!
Btw, every real life museums should get some ideas here...
Fabulous work, and presentation as usual...Thumbs up!!
Thank you very much 😊
Fantastic, Tom. I´m very pleases to see it in real next weekend in Lingen. See You and again superb craftmansship.
This diorama depicts to us, a strong feeling of love for the modelling, a compromise with the accuracy of details, a spirit of research the stetical perfection, and the sensation of life in every milimeter of this greatness in miniature. A wonderful, spectacular, magnificient, and awesome diorama! ¡Magnus Doctor Modellis! ¡I Salute You!
Wow, that's absolutely incredible! The build, music, and filming are spot on. It should be illegal to have this much talent lol!
This is fantastic, really impressive! You never fail to impress, thank you.
I'm glad you like it
The most creative video I have ever seen. The Lancaster is outstanding, and the clear figures evocative of a constant moving crowd viewing the display without distracting from the aircraft . The 1/32 scale Lancaster is a difficult kit to build which is great that the " theater" is showing the kit build out.( a two in one diorama). It definitely looks like What a museum quality restoration would look like. Thanks for sharing another remarkable video. Always impressive
I'm really happy you like it and my ideas become clear. Thanks for your kind words 😊
Simply FANTASTIC!
An absolute masterpiece! Just wow
Thanks a lot 😊
Mind bending skill involved with it all. All around excellent and a joy to watch. It belongs in a museum!
Thanks for your kind words 😊
Stunning......an absolute masterpiece!
Thank you very much 😊
Well Tom I am speechless 😮
Thanks
Just simply amazing! To sillouette the Avro on a bombing run over black and white city far below while incorporating the circles on the floor British aero marking and as a target on the city is pure genius! I love building models and dioramas too and wish I could make it my full time job! Thanks for the master class! Ich danke dir!
wowowowow!!!!!!!!! amazing work Tom
I'm happy to hear you like it 😊
I have been following model building and diorama making since getting a Monogram Models book in my youth ( about 5 decades ago now I think ) that showed an impressive B-17 diorama. This, now, this, THIS is a masterpiece. Unbelievable level of detail and creativity. BRAVO!
Absolutely brilliant!
Thanks
Stunning work and a joy to watch as always 👍
I'm happy to hear
Your creativity is astounding. The build of the Lancaster is of course fantastic. Putting it on display in this setting elevates it to a whole new level.
I'm happy to hear you like my idea
Brilliant work!
Thank you very much 😊
speechless ! one of the most beautiful dio, ever seen ! all is perfect , thousands applause and a great standing ovation for this craftman modeller !

We have come a long way from Airfix, but that is where this started.
Tom has taken it to an unimaginable level from when I was 12.
Thank you very much 😊
Fantastic...highly original. Thank you Tom.

Thank you for your kind words 😊
It's just the art. I really feel like I went to the museum.
Thank you very much 😊
Tom, your work blew me away (pardon the pun), another truly amazing model. Let us hope we can all learn valuable lessons from the past in order for us not to repeat it.
Keep up the good work and best wishes from NZ.
Thanks and I'm glad my ideas become clear
Amazing work Sir. 👍👍
This is next level Awesome! Wow!
Thank you very much 😊
Wow! Cool! A display of a display! :)
Gratuliere Tom✌️
Freut mich sehr, dass es Dir gefällt - bin gespannt, was Berthold dazu sagt 😅. Kommt ja zur EME...
Never fail to impress
Thank you very much 😊
What an amazing idea for a diorama, absolute masterpiece!
Thank you very much 😊
Just amazing. 👏
...pure art, what else to say.
Thank you
absolutely amazing, and very enjoyable to watch.
I'm pleased to hear 😊
Speechless...
Breathtaking masterpiece. This work of art is not of this world!
Thank you very much 😊
Stunning....
Yeah. Superb, makes us mere kit modelers want to give up 😂
Wow! Just amazing
The phrase Museum Quality, this channel exudes it, makes a lot of real museums look like junk yards.
Not a stretch to say this level of detail and esthetic is becoming the minimum standard for professional, corporate and so on, given the trickle down of technology.
Any museum that is not digitised in the first place is not keeping up.
The wars in Syria etc showing how real life full scale historical artefacts can be at least saved in the digital realm - and recreated. (Of course, shame on the destruction in the first place).
The fact THIS is 'just' a UA-cam channel - and the makers of model kits are also embracing the same technology - scanners, 3D modelling etc - alongside game developers and movies creating fully digital worlds - blows the mind.
Imagine what the future will be like with VR, mixed reality, metaverse, etc!!
Thanks for your kind words and the ideas
This is an absolute masterpiece!
Thank you very much 😊
Very nice, is this based on a real museum?
I'm happy you like it - no, it's kind of a museum I thought of how a bomber could be presented
@@TomGrigat Thanks Tom!! It looks awesome!!!
Wow…just wow
Ooh so that's what you were going to do with it?
That looks wonderful 😘
I'm happy you like it 😊
MASTERPIECE!!!!!!!
thank you for your help i live on s.s.and that money don't go far
You're welcome 😊
Wait a second...... Music by Erick Miotke, isn't that the name you used for that space bike thing? Music is amazing - does he have a channel too?
Erick is a big friend of mine. I used to film his concerts when his band Trial was alive. The Spacebike was designed by me after the band logo. You can see some of the band videos on my channel as well. And how the two band members acted like robots:

Or some of the band id's:

Wow. Incredible skills you have Tom.
Thanks a lot
SPLENDID MAESTRO
Fantastic- as usual. However, to preserve this, (for all time, as per your intended message, I suspect) let’s secure it in epoxy as a eternal statement as both individual and corporate responsibility toward what may happen when good men do nothing. May your journey continue..
Nice video, thank you 🙏!
Tom, amazing work, as always. My great uncle was with Patton when they took the first bridge over the Ruhr river. My dad said he would often talk about the amount of absolute destruction that Germany had experienced the closer the allies got to Berlin. He never understood why they fought to the bitter end rather than surrendering after the bulge attempt failed.
I refer you to a moment in Downfall where Burgdorf screams about never surrendering because he's "been through that once before, never again".
They were defending their homes at that point. In for a penny, in for a pound I suppose.
@@tommcevoy4872 agreed, we know why they didn't surrender because we have the advantage of being able to see both sides and have learned some of the high commands rationale.
My uncle on the ground was only able to see the immediate death and destruction though, and left to wonder why they would want to repeat events from the first world war.
I have my doubts anyone actually cheered that.
WOW
Magnificent....
Thanks
Hi Tom, ich habe Deine Avro gestern in Lingen bewundern dürfen. Grandiose Arbeit.
Could you use that laser cutter to cut mask for canopies?
I haven't tried it yet. It may work, but I think a cutter module would do a better job.
Außerirdisch….😊
Thanks
What did I watch? Wowwww
Per Wikipedia: "Ruhr targets were raided 43 times on 39 nights. Bomber Command dispatched 18,506 sorties, in which 872 aircraft failed to return and 2,126 were damaged, with 6,000 aircrew casualties. In 2006, Adam Tooze wrote that the German night defenses (flak and night fighters) had inflicted great damage on Bomber Command, shooting down 640 bombers and killing nearly 4,000 aircrew." German civilian deaths in the Ruhr and Rhine regions (from both Bomber Command and USAAF raids) were perhaps upwards of 50,000.
And the Oscar goes to......... TMiM ! ........... !
😊
