What loser would dare to give this wonderful Masterpiece in time a thumbs down. Such talent.Thumbs up always to the late great Tony Williams. Can't stand Haters...
usually talentless fuck/s who are jealous LOL, that can't stand being around themselves, that can't even play! . Tony Williams maestro king. my gosh that snare and kick work!💖🔥
Yes.. here they're mostly playing songs from the "Native Heart" album, released 1990. A shame nothing from "Angel Street" which came out in 88 and has some of my favorite Tony Williams compositions. But yes he's right up there with the best composers. Wish there was more live footage of him doing stuff from "Angel Street".
@@trudywretched i know there’s a pretty killing video of Red Mask on UA-cam somewhere. Tony starts playing a hardcore beat during the head which is just ridiculous
This performance is probably one of Tony's best performances. I'm sure what I've just written can be debated, and argued over. HOWEVER in my opinion, I think that this is just top notch, one of the best. Excellence, class.. Honey for the ears, and I mean that.
I saw Tony playing with his group Lifetime at Shellys Manhole in Hollywood I think around 1974 sat right up in the front next to his drums. I had never heard anybody play the drums like he did it really inspired me as I went out several days later and purchased a drum set like he had on the stand what an experience still think about it to this day
I remember a story about Tony where he was asked why he played so loud. He said, "Why do people ask that question? They're drums! No one ever asks a trumpet player why they're so brassy or a flute player why they play high notes". I thought it was priceless.
I saw this group in the tiny Catalina's club in LA in 89 or 90. He played so loud, so beautifully loud, my ears are still ringing. Drum me ou,t Tony Williams...
I saw Tony William's at Kimball's West , San Francisco fall of '85 on the "Foreign Intrigue" tour. I asked one of the musician's if he would give me a stick that Tony had broken. Of course I lost it.
Tony Williams was one of those few drummers who had the music "in" him, in his being. It was his purpose to manifest the pulse of the Universe. He's like a holy technology, in his precision and organic nature. Whatever he does fits into his "holy grid."
Tony's band and VSOP both have that 'addictive' quality to them.. Once you start it's all over until the last drum fill and cymbal splash.. And then I click on that little circular symbol that says 'replay'.. oops ;)
Tony is the MAN!!I was lucky that I met him,,,Salt Lake City ca.1987.It was Wagstaff music in SLC.My brother and I were the only ones there?!!Got to see him that night in a small club downtown SLC...Once in a Lifetime event!!!(Pardon the pun)
One of the most intricate, polished, colorfully melodic, inventive and rhymical execution of jazz I have ever encountered. Having a background in music is probably necessary to appreciate the precision and talents in this performance! 👌👌👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏!!
Tony Williams was great drummer. What a guy! Even Miles said of him, years ago, that Williams was his favorite drummer - either that and/or that he was the best drummer around, something superlative like that- and he wasn't kidding!
Thank you so much, this inspires me so much! Tony Williams and Mulgrew Miller, gone too soon! Ira Coleman bass, Wallace Roney trumpet and Bill pierce sax Take care! 1
It's incredible to just imagine what it would be like to play in a band with Tony WIlliams! How much he would inspire you and kick your ass. The Miles quintet of the 60's was of course an astounding band in terms of all-around talent but in my view, way more than 1/5th of that band was Tony WIlliams.
Tony took those lessons of playing with Miles and that sense of freedom further than any other. Tony Williams Lifetime is incredible in it's own rock based improvisation.
Video in 2 parts, Part 1, and Part 2 :: Recorded at Chelsea Studios in New York City on 15 Dec, 1989 :: 7 tracks :: City of Lights, Geo Rose, Juicy Fruit, Sister Cheryl, Crystal Palace, Warrior, Life Of The Party.... [Tony Williams credited as composer/arranger]
No apparently about it , Cooper ! I "stole" a pair of Tony's sticks when he played Ronnie Scott's in September '89 . They are a 2B with a later taper than standard - and every cymbal , regardless of weight or size , is a Fast Crash cymbal !
I believe I saw this same lineup in Minneapolis in '89. I feel like it was around the time that the "Native Heart" album came out. Incredible! Mulgrew has some great records from this era too, and Tony's playing on some of them.
I am a trader, a slightly high stress occupation, hehe this shit makes me see soo much, and relax. In one version or another this is on 24/7, because thats what markets do
Any chance we can get Sister Cheryl as a stand-alone clip? One of the greatest tunes of all time; but its split in this vid and the only other version on UA-cam is terrible quality. That's a tune that deserves MUCH better. But hey--thanks for this stuff. Love it.
Yeah, I wonder if this footage was included in Tony's STORY OF NEPTUNE CD / DVD program that Blue Note Records discontinued some years ago? Anyone here know the answer?
'Dresscode'?....not for Tony Williams . Playing softly jazzy ?.....nope ! Jazz drum set ?....negative ! Tony preferred 'Metal - Kit' ! Unfortunately his car was too small for a 2. bass drum ;- D
not to beat the same horse eveyrone else has alresady said but the only great dummer that is also a solid leader that tony is be art blakey. lots of drummers have tried to lead but while they might be tremendous drummers they lack the consistent quality that williams and blakey. bring. there is a young guy--brian blade--who may someday enter their ranks
......... Ira Coleman here on acoustic bass, although there is a very slight resemblance, I suppose to Mr Barack, but then again there also a very slight resemblance to a Canadian bull moose.... :)
I respected Wallace as a Trumpeter...but something about His choice of notes, and the intervals He used to speak... threw me off. Same with Mulgrew. I NEVER liked Him.

But you know what? They hate themselves.

Yes, he's unafraid of the dynamics!
Jazz with a capital J, these gents have worked long and hard at their craft. Great compositions and playing....they're also well turned out! 😊

Good stuff. Mr. Williams front and center- nothing held back.
These guys are hard wired together, they just did a good job of hiding the cables, WOW!
+1 for corniest joke ever

i may sound naive, but tonys snares always sound dampered, hardly hear the crackle of snares?is it deliberate to get the sound we hear?
i too wonder about that.
@@stephenfernandes6440 It seems Tony preferred this sound. I notice that when he plays a brush ballad he ALWAYS turns off the snares.
