I have a friend who grew up without a father. He, and most of my friends, spent a lot of time at my house. My dad became a father figure to many of them. I found out, years after my dad had passed, that this first friend regularly visits my dad's grave.

I raised 2 kids on my own when ex wife left. Both left to great lives and I’m proud
I helped a single mother raise her two kid who both received their degrees. I remarried and raised 3 more and are doing great. Dads are the strength and discipline of the family and the mothers the conscience and love

Congratulations. Fathers don't get the recognition they deserve. I know a few who raised their children and one who raised his girl. Women can be lousy mothers as well as men can be lousy Father's.
Sometimes it is better to be raised by one parent.

Our son worked for me since he was 17. I am a craftsman, so was teaching him tradesmanship. Although he learned quite a bit, like most kids, he would take advantage of "working for dad". Finally I had to "fire him", but wouldn't let him go park his behind in front of the computer.
I helped him write a professional resume and showed him how to apply online to resorts and national parks. They supply housing so he wouldn't have to worry about survival and just on developing a good work ethic.
Within 48 hours, he had calls from Grand Tetons, Vail, Aspen, Alaska and the Grand Canyon. Coincidentally, I had worked the summer at the canyon 38 years before. He was offered a job there and now walks out every morning inside the park and enjoying a daily view that few can rival and is truly coming into his own. His mom & I couldn't be prouder.
Now we just hope he still wants to come home...

This is such an important conversation! I loved this episode! Over a year ago I posted on FB that boys needed more help, and I posted statistics that showed why. Many of my feminist friends flipped out. I couldn’t believe how controversial it was! And many of these moms have boys! I will share your fabulous interview with Dr. Ferrell. Just because one sex needs more help doesn’t mean you can’t still support the other! It’s not a competition!

I was full time dad for 4 years, then after divorce a long distance dad for 6 years then a full time single dad for 10 years, from what I'm hearing I can pat myself on the back. I was a cop in the inner city for 2 decades. Common theme of every gang banger - no father and very awkward around adult men, like they couldn't hold a regular conversation but always wanted to puff their chest like a toddler. As if their maturity had been retarded by the absence of a male role model.

Hi Maria, this is not an assault on us, single mothers. I take it that there are figures behind to show the risks and threads bigger for kids like ours in general. I am a mum of 3 great boys, as you say . But I can clearly appreciate where they could have got more, being there a father with us.
As you say, sometimes it is what it is. But let us be honest, it is not equal to full family with both quality mum and dad.
Take care and all the best.

I was mom and dad and it wasn't easy some days but they are my world and wouldn't change a thing. I loved this episode! I scrolled past it over the weekend and didn’t feel compelled but tonight I decided what the heck and it was great! It’s fascinating to gain some insights into what a child gets from dad, especially how empathy is learned. One suggestion for the dad who can’t commit to dinner, make it a must do. Sunday dinners. And, if that really can’t happen, then do Sat or Sun brunch. Not only is the sharing, listening without judgement, and conveying that each person has been fully heard a wonderful thing, it’s a good way to have kids help cook, set the table, learn about posture and table manners, and clean up. Many young people don’t know how to set a table, where the flatware and glasses should go, or the bread plate…. It’s important to feel comfortable and confident at your date’s parent’s house or in a nice restaurant.

Off on a tangent. The wife of the headmaster of a martial art I have practiced for years, mentioned how the grandmaster of nine different lineages in Japan told her that, "You fight like a man, you need to learn how to fight like a woman." The unspoken word is "also." If you are a single parent you are required to learn how the other natural parent would/should, be the best for raising your child.

I think a single parent should seek out role models for his/her kids of the opposite sex from whatever sex the parent is that has the kids most of the time, because it is impossible for a parent to be both parents to their kids.

In a divorce, nearly all of the time the judge grants custody to the mother, even when the dad is the more stable of the two, which reduces the amount of influence that a dad can provide. My ex told the judge that I had done something w/ the intent to limit my visitation. He seemed to accept her word. When I told him that I'd found coke on her several times, he asked for a police report. Really? Who calls the police on their wife? I didn't call the police every time that she drove home drunk as a skunk either. My son eventually told her that either she give up drinking or he was moving in w/ me. She drank herself into an early grave and missed out on his wedding and birth of my grandson. And yet the judge sided w/ her. The judicial system doesn't help the lopsided numbers of mothers raising kids on their own.

When I was a kid in the 1950s and 60s, there were always kids in the school wearing casts. They played outside and challenged their physical limits. My son has a few broken bones as a child. All while playing outside and doing physical stuff. This mollycoddling of children is to their detriment. This allowing them to sit in front of computers for hours is easy for the parents. It is IMO child abuse as they end up physically unhealthy: soft and fat. It is also abdicating parental responsibility to bring up independent and physically healthy children. Do these people not care about their children? It seems they don't.

    We can't eaisily solve the divorce prob;em but the best near term solution for families with no father is to create more male teachers. Teachers are the second most influential adults in a childs life. We should have free education for any man willing to become a reacher. A male teacher can influence many male students in a day and as an achecdemic role model he does it in a field that will be most belificial to the boy;

I think it’s odd that he took so many years to figure out that he might need to adjust his point of view. Even after the apparent adjustment he’s still not someone I would confide in under any circumstance.

I found his observations good, but his solutions seemed a little theoretical instead of real world. I mean, "Take the coach aside and tell him your son doesn't have a father figure and could he take extra care to compliment him..."
That's just a 98% chance of torpedoing the kid's chance to be a part of the "herd" and get the good things out of sports.
My point is: I just can't imagine this advice coming out of the mouth or from the mind of a straight adult male (and not from most gay men, either), so I agree with your conclusion.

Dr. Farrell has a very narrow POV on life. I imagine it was mostly developed from his personal experience. He leaves many of us out of his narrative. The role of the father he is espousing could be harmful to some. How would Farrell recommend a father interact with the loner child, artistic nature; force him into sports? I'll catch one of your other shows Megyn.

@@DavidWright7 Listening to this guy feels like I am getting advice from Jamie Dutton from Yellowstone - love your kids, show courage, stand behind them to make them strong, give them obedient spirits (build trust) - remind them that they ultimately need one good woman, at least one good job, and faith in something bigger than themselves, which is aligning with Christ. [maybe his advice is for everyone else, but aim higher]
