Regarding the cloaks, I remember back when these models came out, I liked how the cloaks looked more natural than you'd find on other GW models (the wood elves glade guard for example) because cloaks rarely form such well ordered "tubes", it ruffles, has weird bumps where it conforms to whatever is under it, etc. That said, that was 20 years ago, they were definitely limited by the casting techniques of the day too.... though I did like how they were basically all 1 piece models, meant little time from buying a box to playing a game.
@ sorry I didn’t want to be that guy 😅😅 but it bothers me every time the word “cloak” isn’t used by anyone in the MESBG community. The biggest example is the very famous elven cloak
@@star_wars_miniatures No stress, people make too much of a big deal about being corrected, if I'm wrong I'm wrong and I'll fix it, lol. Once I read your response I thought "yeah, makes sense, why did I call it a cape..." lol
Middle Earth Monday!! Awesome. Great to see this again. Loved this tutorial. Both the minis are great and for different reasons. The old ones tick the boxes for the Nostalgia factor but the new models look fantastic. Thanks for this video.
Love this video! I'm always here for LotR content, and I think it's really cool seeing an old model painted up next to a brand new version with the same techniques. I'd love to see more videos with that format, and my top request would be one of the modern Khorne Berzerkers next to one of the older models!
Really cool idea to paint the old and new models together. Gives us an in depth look at the changes made. The scale difference is noticable, on this model in particular. On the whole I think they fit well together, and aren't necessarily a required upgrade.
Looks like I got back just in time!!! Looks good. Will have to go back and watch the last 2-1/2 months of vids you've put out, just to catch up with you feed.
very good idea for a video. "I don't agree the new ones are a waste but let me spend hours so you can make your own mind up". Well played dude! This isn't sitting on the fence, it is having a preference but letting people make educated choices themselves. have a like and comment. When money is better I will patreon
actually I just thought I would add. For those on a tight budget, original models are fine, they don't want to spend a lot of money replacing them, perhaps thats the reason for the backlash? I'm sure you will get comments saying "yeah if i got my minis for free then of course I would want them" but still everyone plays their hobbie their own way with resources they have. Hell I played Blood bowl 30 years ago making models out of blue tac, just so I could try it
Appreciate that a lot man 😊 I honestly don’t think you need to replace them if you already have the old ones painted, it would just be too hard for me to go back and paint the old ones now I know these exist. People have complained about the increased size but most of them don’t seem to have painted the old ones they have either 😄 Haha I remember people with blue tack models 😂
Glad that Middle Earth Monday is back! ❤. I like the side by side style with new and old minis. (I still have old ones to paint! 😂). For the look of the cloak, I agree the new one is easier to paint when they look like that, but they would likely be made of heavy wool, so the old mini would likely be more “realistic” in the way it would lay. That being said much of it would be from the technologies back then (both sculpt and cast).
OH man, those new sculpts are 1000% better. I still have loads of the old models in my old War of the Ring army, and I am looking forward to building and painting these new models.
Great video! I love the old sculpts cos well, 20 years ago they were ok, but most importantly they were true to the movies. That said, a higher quality mini will always produce a higher quality paint job, so looking forward to getting my hands on these!
Yes having something to paint from the movies was amazing back then. Seriously can’t wait to see these guys painted by competition painters soon, the lord of the rings section of golden demon is about to get a lot more popular
Todai i sat and took one of mine old Rohan Warriors from Battlehost box i paint it using your vid step by step (i did no layering yet meaby i will a bit).Model came good like for mine lack of practice and i would like to say THANK YOU , THANK YOU and again THANK YOU...i will train on some old models and then i will paint mine New Rohan Dudes and later i wil do the same with dunlendings looking at your another great vid.....Thanks meaby i will get this big box now:) well when they will have it again in mine store.cheers
Aw man thanks for taking the time to let me know that-that's so great to hear that the video helped! Don't worry about layering for now, get them painted to where you're happy with and you can always add on later when you feel more confident! Hope you get the new box soon, and enjoy!
Thank you so much for the comparison. Makes me actually eager to get the new set so I'll never have to paint the warriors I already have. But the scale creep makes me think uruk hai will look even smaller compared to Rohan.
Thank you, very helpful. I didnt realise the new minis are noticably bigger than the earlier. I personally are nit surprised but this means my largd num b er and of metal and earlier resin minis will be smaller too.
I like that you do highlights using Base colours. I've done that for years and I like the more muted style of painting over sharp edge highlights, at least for my rank-and-file models.
Great video, as always 👍 do you think this is a good starter set for LotR? I haven’t painted any since the original Fellowship of the Ring set came out years ago
The problem is the scale of new models won't be compatible with old ones. There's almost no point in painting something now unless it's the new version 😒
@ I don’t think they would be necessarily a huge gap between new & old. Just like recent heroes being resculpted and made plastic No doubt there would be a slight awkward transition. But I think for the greater good of the hobby this needs to happen
Good comparison! I really don't like the new sword hilts or the shin guards both seem naturally proportioned. I will buying the box for bits to convert my old Rohan collection
you could have done one more highlight on the cloak with a pastel green to emphasize the folds ...also to make the shiny leather i use nuln oil gloss but watered down , that makes the fabric feel more alive ...
Glad you mentioned the elephant in the room - the lack of revealed new rohan cavalry miniatures. I would have bought the new box but if I'm playing rohan myself, it will be as all mounted rohan 90% of the time. The infantry miniatures just get used as dismounts and rarely see gameplay in any large quantity in my experience.
Yesss! Perfect timing. I’m about to start my army. Although most of my warriors are the old sculpts, I’ll definitely find this video useful. Awesome as usual Andy 👏🏻
Amazing video, thanks. I dont remember those old Rohan models to look that bad? The new one is amazing. Id be keen to see a tutorial on the wildmen. I know you do almost only contrast paints, any chance on the traditional method for the rohan warrior? :)
you are totally right... nice paint work... one thing I hate on the new one is the nose armor.... it blends too much into the face and you lose detail... hard to overcome with that....
The scale creep is probably intentional as the new edition is supposed to focus on accuracy to movies and lore. The men of Rohan are supposed to be "viking like" in their features. Tall, robust, fair hair and skin. Where the dunlendings are supposed to be shorter, stockier, dark hair and eyes. People of that area were often described by Tolkien as "swarthy". Im personally hoping that new models coming will focus on this aspect. Like the Numenoreans being way too small, or the oldest elven characters like Galadriel, Cirdan, Thranduil and Glorfindel being considerably taller than most other elves.
I think they would mix in! If I had more old painted stuff I’d mix them in, I just can’t face going back and painting old stuff now I know these exist!
Scale creep has been an issue in MESBG minis for a while…between the new way they are producing plastics and the newer forge world kits, the sizes have been slowly creeping up. I saw a comparison between the new Rohan models and some of the FW and there was really no difference.
Actually most of the minis from the old set scale well with the new minis. The one you've shown in the video is one of the two poses from the old set, that are siginificantly smaller.
As very minor suggestion, feel free to ignore, I would do comparison painting like this with an occasional split screen in the edit. It’s slightly confusing to follow what model is being painted through out.
Hard agree on the new riders, I very much hope these will soon follow in the future. I‘d love to see Hama, the studio paint job with the yellowish horse and the samey-coloured horse-armor looks a bit odd
Honestly, I think the old models were done smaller so they wouldn't be usable for WH fantasy battles.... I know LotR models weren't legal for tourneys, but the size difference was probably intentional to further deter usage..
No doubt that the new models look better, the detailing is on another level. But I have 72 of the old models paintet, they're fine, so I won't bother with the newer.
I've been waiting for someone to show the old models alongside the new. I am unsurprised at the scale creep, but it does make me sad. I probably won't purchase any of the new, as I already have 48 of the old (as well as ~30 mounted Riders of Rohan).
I'm absolutely no intention of getting this box. I like the Lords of the Ring. However I am a Sci-Fi guy. 😂 I do enjoy watching you come up with your paint schemes and executing them to perfection. Love that you’ll still watch the videos anyway, there’s always tips in every tutorial to help with personal projects. Thanks so much for the support man, really appreciate it
I'd like to add some context to the models as I personally feel it's a bit disingenuous to call them potato sculpts as if they were sculpted by some amateur. The original mesbg models were sculpted by the Perry twins by hand. They were accomplished sculptors back then, and the scale was true scale over Heroic, which is why they are smaller in size. Manufacturing processes have also been refined since 20 years ago, where capes and other parts and details had to be 'merged' into one, and that still holds true mostly for casting metal models today. Newer models are sculpted digitally, where you can create incredible levels of detail you simply can't get via hand sculpting at those scales. I'd like to point out that the newer models look more crisp, and those smaller areas such as the eyes are more defined, but I don't see the difference as being night and day. And mass production has little to do with it as a sole means of measuring quality, as all newer sculpts are also designed for mass production. It's just more materials, methods, and processes available now allowing for better results. It's perfectly fine if you or anyone doesn't like traditional hand sculpted minis. it's a preference, certainly, and it doesn't appeal to everyone. I myself enjoy older and even newer handsculpted miniatures as I find it has a charm to it.
The new minis look nicer for sure, but they're useless to me as they don't blend in size wise with the old ones. Why couldn't they just update the sculpts at a closer size to the originals?
I've been trying to hold off picking up the Edoras box until the new year, but looking at the quality of the models is giving me real FOMO. Your scheme is great, as always.
The size difference is GW planning on getting all 28mm up to 32mm across the board. Meaning your old minis will no longer be allowed at tournaments held by GW. Basically, yet another way to scalp money from folk.
Of everyone in the hobby very few people play at tournaments run by GW. There’s enough events to play at if you don’t want to buy these new models just for that one minor reason. Just enjoy the toys you already have!
MESBG has had a consistent slightly larger scale since like 2016. The oldest sculpts like the warriors of Rohan are the absolute smallest in the range. Also I feel like you’re being a little too critical of these 20+ year old iconic models that carried this game for 2 decades, but to each their own.
I talked about that part, not wanting to criticise such nostalgic models! Once you hold the new ones in your hands I’m sure you’ll understand! They were wonderful for their time, but they also have had their time and that’s okay too
Love Middle Earth Mondays. I stayed away from Middle Earth models because they weren't very good. The new ones however are fantastic and I will be buying this box..
Oh thank f, I am all for the increased scale, Painting the small minis was a nightmare, Not that its a dramatic difference but its still a welcome change, Easier to paint and more room for details is a complete win imo, Will have to keep my eye on the range, Rohirim aren't my thing but once the new Balrog and Gobbos get their scale I am soo back :3
Haha yes thank you-they’re so much easier to paint now, and even the plastic feels smother to paint on as well. This is just a starter set and it’s a new edition so I’m keeping my fingers crossed for more soon too
Given how much of the LOTR range is set at a relatively consistent scale, it is disappointing to see the scale creep come in. In a digital age, imparting fine detail to models of a consistent scale should not be difficult. Indeed, because things are made digitally, it should be easier to scale things appropriately - just put a reference model in the CAD software while sculpting.
The Rohan models are ANCIENT and the range has been consistent for a while now. These new warriors are consistent with the models released since like 2016 or so.
@yeahnah3erter the increased size isn’t just about level of detail on this scale, it’s just not fun to try paint those details on such a small model. And yes @_ccann the old models were 20 years old, these fit better with the last refresh

I don't mind a bit of scale creep, humans vary in height and size so much, it is more natural to have a variety of sizes on the tabletop. Great vid!

I like that you do highlights using Base colours. I've done that for years and I like the more muted style of painting over sharp edge highlights, at least for my rank-and-file models.
Yes exactly, you can do more with characters but for infantry this style looks great all together!
New miniature is great! Though shield of old mini has more style in my opinion.
Good point there!
Nice video Andy, I definitely prefer the new mini it’s worlds apart from the old one.
Yup, it’s very hard to look at the old ones the same way again now!
That scale creep looks pretty drastic in the video. Haven’t seen it in person, so could be a trick of the camera, but it seems pretty stark…
Great video, as always 👍 do you think this is a good starter set for LotR?
I haven’t painted any since the original Fellowship of the Ring set came out years ago
Scale creep is one area that frankly makes me not buy product, but would seemingly be the simplest issue to resolve from the initial plans

Haha yeah…trying to make them look “right” for the store 😄
Was it the model or the base that was bigger? The base also looks different or am I just not seeing it right?
The bases haves stayed the same 25mm but the body proportions have definitely changed slightly on the new models
@burro5536 the bases are the same size across but they’re thicker now!
The scale creep is probably intentional as the new edition is supposed to focus on accuracy to movies and lore. The men of Rohan are supposed to be "viking like" in their features. Actually most of the minis from the old set scale well with the new minis. The one you've shown in the video is one of the two poses from the old set, that are siginificantly smaller.
the pose of the model doesn't affect the size of the model though? I deliberately went for two models with a similar pose.
I'd say start off with all of the rohan and then all of dunland, just helps keep same colour schemes together and sane faction

Once you hold one of these in your hand you’ll understand 😄 no reason not to keep using the older sculpts if you already have them though!
@@MediocreHobbies I'm sure they're lovely but it'll have to be eBay or 3D printing if I want reinforcements in the right scale sadly. :(
Infantry then characters
Agreed!
I've been trying to hold off picking up the Edoras box until the new year, but looking at the quality of the models is giving me real FOMO. Your scheme is great, as always.
It’s a starter set so there’s no rush! Might be some good sales over Christmas/new year though!
They were wonderful for their time, but they also have had their time and that’s okay too
Can’t wait for Primaris Elves
Just kidding but those new kits look absolutely fantastic 😊
This is just a starter set and it’s a new edition so I’m keeping my fingers crossed for more soon too
Comments don’t have to be questions?
Haha any comment helps!
I’ll try to think of one…
The old figures were on the small side and were not very good, same as the plastic wood elves. The new ones look great.
Agreed!
Agreed!
Man that old model is fugly. You're a good painter, but no amount of good painting can make that thing look good.
Hahaha agreed!
