I've watched this particular scene at least a a dozen times and I cry each time. Eric Winter and Melissa O'Neil are the only reason I watch The Rookie and scenes like this are why. They always deliver.
True. I always get shock how short some of their scenes are because they always make us feel all the emotions. It could be 30 sec or 3 minutes and they'll always deliver.

Although Tim always seems to be very tough, he‘s actually very broken from all the things he went through and this past mistake now adds further onto that. For their relationship to work he needs to learn how to deeply trust another person again and that asking for help doesn‘t make him weak. With this breakup he wants to protect Lucy, the simple fact that he might lose his job can lead to other cops distrusting her, just for being his girlfriend. He needs to come around that he isn‘t alone anymore, he has been for so long. They love each other and they will work it out, but they both have to work on themselves, especially Tim. But if you really think Lucy would give up on Tim when he needs her the most, have you even watched the show?
My favourite acting moments was when Tim said “you have to let me finish. This is very hard for me to say” and when Lucy’s hand raises in anger and frustration and you could see Tim’s hand holding hers 🥺 and when you can nearly see Lucy about to cry 😢 MASTERPIECE PERFORMANCE BY BOTH!!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 🤧
I feel so bad for Tim. His past self and his past mistakes came back to bite him, and now he feels like he no longer deserves Lucy because he did horrible things in the past, lied to his current superiors, and endangered Lucy, Tamara and Lopez. He is closing his heart again because he doesn't want to be the cause of someone he cares about getting hurt, or do anything to ruin other people's lives. I hope that he will be able to get the help he needs to let go of his demons, get back to being the Tim that everyone knows he can be, and that he and Lucy will be able to get back together and reconcile after he loses sight of himself.
it's just the fact that he has abruptly reached that conclusion in that short amount of time he encounters his past. It wasn't a gradual descent but a Sudden one. Either he was never going to be able to do the relationship with Lucy or he is not being up front with the way the past actions really happened. In my opinion I think we'll have to get a little more information on what led Tim to this moment to say the words to Lucy after the last few days we weren't able to see. maybe they'll show us what we didn't get to see when he was taking time off work. I don't know what to expect but it's just not something you'd say to the person you were invested in and in love with until now. Also they have faced a lot more than that previously but it's never caused a breakup so I'm curious how it would happen now. .lol is there another version of Tim again?
I don't see them getting together anytime soon (and if it was in real life - probably never). Tim needs to work on himself a lot, it would take at least several months if not a year. Meanwhile Lucy should move on and find someone more compatible with her.

Melissa and Eric carry this show on their shoulders. It’s not only that their characters are the most interesting in the show but it’s also their acting. Two of them are making their characters seem absolutely real. Brilliant acting! And a brilliant though painful scene.

They, out of all the main cast, r the most emotionally charged actors and they take you to that place every time. You FEEL their scenes (particularly these types of heavier scenes) in your soul. They crush you with their performances, and it's so effortless. The dialogue is always great, but they do SO much with pacing, tone of voice, pauses, body language, nonverbal communication, and looks. That's the epitome of chemistry. You feel everything with these two. Giddiness, happiness, sweetness, physical attraction, pain, vulnerability, heart wrenching stuff & everything in between. I smile like an idiot at their scenes and I cry like a baby, i feel them in my stomach. That's what makes them stand out/so popular. They DELIVER on all fronts and it's the most beautiful thing.

A round of applause to Eric and especially Melissa on this scene. They embody such emotions while delivering their lines. My heart broke for Lucy when she said, "Why're you doing this?!" I can only hope to see them get their accolades one day! Can't wait for the next episode. To ease the sting AND having to wait 3 weeks, ABC should announce season 7's renewal 👀
I honestly never loved a show this much, the fact I actually cried at this scene shows how well made this show is & how beautifully made this scene was.. Although we are all pissed right now over this, the writers did a damn good job & I hope we get 10 more seasons 😊

I’ve been rewatching The Rookie and seeing Lucy take L after L is heartbreaking. She goes through some of the worse situations out of any of the characters. Tim was the one person that she loved to be with and the fact she loss him is probably the worst she will feel…unless Tim dies. The L in Lucy is apparent.
But why? He's been an absolute jerk to her since the start. I don't buy them together at all, Lucy deserves better and someone closer to her age (btw why has that never come up?! There's gotta be a ten year gap, Tim is pushing 40 and Lucy is what, mid 20s?!)
I feel so bad for Tim.. I mean his whole life was just trauma after trauma - abusive father, then military and war, watching other soldiers die, feeling responsible for it, and then the whole story with Isabel. And he never got any proper help from what we've seen in the show. I feel like it's just too much trauma for one person, so now I guess he's feeling like he doesn't deserve Lucy and walks away... It's just really sad..
Didn’t want to see this the first time. No one ordered a Chenford break up after waiting years for them to get together. Kudos to Eric and Melissa for the fantastic acting though.

Tim loves Lucy so much, but at this moment in his life, he doesn't love himself at all. This might be his lowest point, even worse than Isabel leaving. Lucy brought so much light and joy into his life, but her love can't heal everything. Tim hasn't let anyone, not even her, into the part of his life connected to his service in the army. And now, this darkness clouds the light that Lucy's love brings. Leaving her is his way of expressing love at this moment; he believes he's protecting her from himself because Tim is a fierce protector at heart. He's ashamed of who he is, doesn't recognize himself, and feels that Lucy deserves better while he doesn't deserve her love and support. Hopefully, therapy will help him confront his demons from the past. Though it's painful and still hasn't sunk in, it's true to who Tim is. I believe they'll be together again soon, stronger and happier than ever. Eric and Melissa completely blew me away with their acting in this scene; so genuine, raw, I felt like I was the one breaking up with someone and being broken up with at the same time. Chenford, in my opinion, is the strongest point of this series; their relationship is the heart of the show. They drew me in and kept me hooked, and I believe the showrunners and producers won't ruin them.
I binge watched the 5 full first seasons in the 2 weeks right before S6E3. I discovered the show through a YT recommandation of a Chenford video. And just 3 weeks later, I got this scene. Definitely a roller coaster. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut, it's a TV drama, so of course there has to be trials and adventures along the path, that's what brings character development. As a writer myself, I know this all too well. Let see where this goes...
Still trying to process it all. Incredible acting- Tim’s first “I’m sorry” and Lucy’s “why are you doing this?” are genuinely heartbreaking. Hoping and praying for a season 7 renewal because judging by the interviews with both Melissa and Eric; they won’t be back together by the end of season 6!! Let’s just hope that their storyline won’t end up in limbo if the series isn’t renewed 😬😬😢

I don't understand how did we get from season five to this situation only in 6 episodes. Lucy has been through a lot. She lost Jackson, her parents are crazy, she was kidnapped and now she failed the exam, almost killed sb by accident and lost her roommate and boyfriend. If I were Lucy, I don't know if I could ever forgive him that he just left her like that. I mean he always had these traumas. They knew that. Yes he didn't tell her the truth, but just to save her job. And she also did this with the five player trade. And now he's sacrificing himself, because he is not good enough for her? It's not true. He just needs therapy. Although I think he needed it from season 1. And his sacrifice will hurt Lucy more, especially because she will not have anyone to share this with. Even Angela and Nyla were so rude to her when she failed the exam. So this storyline for them is just shit. And I don't know how will they move on from here. There are only four episodes left, and there's a chance that there won't be a season 7, so I think I'll come back to the show, when they will come back together again, because the other characters are not my favourite. But the acting was great and well-performed, I'll never forget about it, that hand hold and their sad eyes... I wish I could.😢
I can't believe he did that to Lucy. When she stood by him even though he did something wrong for a bad man but, be sweet to he's wife and kid. I don't like them braking up. He will regret it and hopefully she'll forgive him again

Please, I beg you, don't split up my beloved duo. They're the heart of why I tune in to this show. On-screen power couples like them belong together! Eric and Melissa are phenomenal actors, infusing every scene with profound emotions. Their performances feel so real, it's like watching life unfold. It's not to say the rest of the cast isn't excellent-they're all fantastic actors. But Tim and Lucy hold a special place in my heart 😉 Keep shining, everyone!
No matter how painful and how much this episode sucks, because it does, Tim & Lucy have to go through this to be able to weather things long term. If they don’t, then more problems lurk further down the road. Tim has to heal & learn to love himself again, or maybe, quite possibly for the first time ever, before he can even think about healing and repairing what he’s done to Lucy. He takes a lot in, but doesn’t let a lot out. Tim shoulders everything alone, in order to protect those he loves the most, when in reality, he’s not alone at all. He has his found family that love and support him… and he needs to learn to lean into that. Leaning into your support system is not a sign of weakness. Tim broke things off with Lucy because he loves her more than he’s ever loved himself or anyone else. He doesn’t just love her, he’s IN love with her and that depth of feeling that he has for her is something he hasn’t experienced before and doesn’t yet understand. Lucy fell first but he fell harder, and it scares the shit out of him. Has Tim been in other relationships? Yes, but Isabel chose drugs, Rachel chose the job and Ashley chose herself but no one, until Lucy, ever chose him, and he has to protect that at all cost. He’s protecting Lucy by distancing himself until he can give himself to her completely, whole and in one piece. She deserves that. She’s worth the effort he’s going to put into himself and by extension, their relationship. Admitting to Lucy that he’s been lying to himself for a long time, is a huge step for him on his road to healing. At the end of the day, Tim and Lucy love each other but if that love is built on a crumbling foundation, then their love simply won’t last. I’ve seen where people have said that this new arc for Tim goes against all of his growth since season one. I firmly and vehemently disagree. Tim has taken the first step and acknowledged that he has some pretty wicked and quite frankly cruel skeletons in the closet that he hasn’t dealt with. By acknowledging that, he showing continued growth. Tim, with time, therapy and support will get through this a much better man. Those things won’t erase what he’s done but he can right his course and do the right things from here on out. Whether she’s willing to admit it or not, Lucy needs to heal herself as well. Her parents are down right awful to her… and those wounds run deep. I also don’t believe that’s she truly dealt with the Rosalind/Caleb situation and she really needs to. Hopefully, Tim and Lucy will each start their own journey to healing and find that they’re stronger both individually and as a couple. Additionally, Lucy broke up with Chris then immediately jumped into a relationship with Tim. She didn’t give herself time to process what she had just been through or why she was feeling the things she was feeling or more importantly not feeling about Chris. She now has the time she needs to process that. When Lucy and Tim find their way back to one another, (I think something big is going to happen to Lucy and Tim finally pull his head out) therapy and open communication will go a long way to repairing them both as individuals as well as their relationship. They’ll be stronger for it.

I genuinely trusted the writers that they won't use this " I am too damaged to be loved, so I am breaking up with you" trope. Extremely disappointed. I love that they wanted to portray an authentic relationship with all the ups and downs and struggles, but the break up could have been avoided. lWouldn't it be refreshing to see Tim going on a therapy while Lucy accepting his imperfections and traumas? They literally told us how many times times that Tim and Lucy want to deal with their issues and problems TOGETHER, but Tim just easily gives up on their relationship. This is contradiction as hell.
I really don't think their breakup is definitive, and what you are describing is most likely what us going to happen. The show runners spent way too much time developing this relationship to let it go like this snd I really believe this was just to be a way to show that Tim has reached his lowest point. He is going to get out of it one way or another and my best guess is that he will do it with Lucy in his life
True, I was let down by the affirmations they've said in previous season. I wished Tim just asked for space while he figure things out and not totally break up with her. Lucy would have understood that. They could even go to couple's therapy after he has been working on healing himself but no, they wanted more drama and went with the outdated TV route.
I have waited 5 seasons for them to finally admit their feelings and get together, and for it to end (momentarily Im begging) after barely 1 season is heartbreaking and really disappointing.

I gotta say, I really appreciate the producers of The Rookie for not going the usual trope of the woman saving the man and bearing all his trauma. It's refreshing to see a guy deal with his own shit on his own for once. I personally hope Chen matures a bit and realises she absolutely deserves someone better because, and I know this is a wildly unpopular opinion, I don't think Tim actually loves her. I think he loves that someone loves him, after the trauma of Isobel and his upbringing, he's clearly been starved of affection and will gravitate to anyone who will offer it. And I hope he works out what he really wants instead of what he thinks expected of him as a man.
My Chenford heart is totally shattered, I’m still devastated. I applaud Eric & Mel for their brilliant acting, but I’m totally annoyed with the writers. As someone who watched in real time & fell in love with Chenford S1, I patiently waited to see my beautiful ship become cannon for 5 years, I was frustrated sometimes but loved their banter & how wonderfully they were written. I was so happy with season 5 & their development & the fact that they have always been there for each other. I’m shocked the writers have taken this path and that we have not even had them together for a season. While I understand Tim’s demons, I can’t understand why the writers choose to not allow them to face the problem together & be the supportive partners they always have been. As hard as it is, I will continue to keep the faith in Chenford as I truly believe they are soulmates, hopefully we get a S7 renewal so this wrong can be righted.
If you binge-watch this series, this scene is, in my opinion, one of the most satisfying moments. Lucy Chen truly deserved every bit of it-and more-for what she did to Chris Sanford, the Assistant District Attorney

I’ve been rewatching The Rookie and seeing Lucy take L after L is heartbreaking. She goes through some of the worse situations out of any of the characters. Tim was the one person that she loved to be with and the fact she loss him is probably the worst she will feel…unless Tim dies. The L in Lucy is apparent.
But why? He's been an absolute jerk to her since the start. I don't buy them together at all, Lucy deserves better and someone closer to her age (btw why has that never come up?! There's gotta be a ten year gap, Tim is pushing 40 and Lucy is what, mid 20s?!)

I feel so bad for Tim.. I mean his whole life was just trauma after trauma - abusive father, then military and war, watching other soldiers die, feeling responsible for it, and then the whole story with Isabel. And he never got any proper help from what we've seen in the show. I feel like it's just too much trauma for one person, so now I guess he's feeling like he doesn't deserve Lucy and walks away... It's just really sad..

Tim loves Lucy so much, but at this moment in his life, he doesn't love himself at all. This might be his lowest point, even worse than Isabel leaving. Lucy brought so much light and joy into his life, but her love can't heal everything. Tim hasn't let anyone, not even her, into the part of his life connected to his service in the army. And now, this darkness clouds the light that Lucy's love brings. Leaving her is his way of expressing love at this moment; he believes he's protecting her from himself because Tim is a fierce protector at heart. He's ashamed of who he is, doesn't recognize himself, and feels that Lucy deserves better while he doesn't deserve her love and support. Hopefully, therapy will help him confront his demons from the past. Though it's painful and still hasn't sunk in, it's true to who Tim is. I believe they'll be together again soon, stronger and happier than ever.
Eric and Melissa completely blew me away with their acting in this scene; so genuine, raw, I felt like I was the one breaking up with someone and being broken up with at the same time. Chenford, in my opinion, is the strongest point of this series; their relationship is the heart of the show. They drew me in and kept me hooked, and I believe the showrunners and producers won't ruin them.

I binge watched the 5 full first seasons in the 2 weeks right before S6E3. I discovered the show through a YT recommandation of a Chenford video. And just 3 weeks later, I got this scene. Definitely a roller coaster. Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut, it's a TV drama, so of course there has to be trials and adventures along the path, that's what brings character development. As a writer myself, I know this all too well. Let see where this goes...

Hoping and praying for a season 7 renewal because judging by the interviews with both Melissa and Eric; they won’t be back together by the end of season 6!!

I don't understand how did we get from season five to this situation only in 6 episodes. Lucy has been through a lot. She lost Jackson, her parents are crazy, she was kidnapped and now she failed the exam, almost killed sb by accident and lost her roommate and boyfriend. If I were Lucy, I don't know if I could ever forgive him that he just left her like that. I mean he always had these traumas. They knew that. Yes he didn't tell her the truth, but just to save her job. And she also did this with the five player trade. And now he's sacrificing himself, because he is not good enough for her? It's not true. He just needs therapy. Although I think he needed it from season 1. And his sacrifice will hurt Lucy more, especially because she will not have anyone to share this with. Even Angela and Nyla were so rude to her when she failed the exam. So this storyline for them is just shit. And I don't know how will they move on from here. There are only four episodes left, and there's a chance that there won't be a season 7, so I think I'll come back to the show, when they will come back together again, because the other characters are not my favourite. But the acting was great and well-performed, I'll never forget about it, that hand hold and their sad eyes... I wish I could.😢

Eric and Melissa are phenomenal actors, infusing every scene with profound emotions. Their performances feel so real, it's like watching life unfold. It's not to say the rest of the cast isn't excellent-they're all fantastic actors. But Tim and Lucy hold a special place in my heart 😉 Keep shining, everyone!
No matter how painful and how much this episode sucks, because it does, Tim & Lucy have to go through this to be able to weather things long term. If they don’t, then more problems lurk further down the road.
Tim has to heal & learn to love himself again, or maybe, quite possibly for the first time ever, before he can even think about healing and repairing what he’s done to Lucy. He takes a lot in, but doesn’t let a lot out. Tim shoulders everything alone, in order to protect those he loves the most, when in reality, he’s not alone at all. He has his found family that love and support him… and he needs to learn to lean into that. Leaning into your support system is not a sign of weakness.
Tim broke things off with Lucy because he loves her more than he’s ever loved himself or anyone else. He doesn’t just love her, he’s IN love with her and that depth of feeling that he has for her is something he hasn’t experienced before and doesn’t yet understand. Lucy fell first but he fell harder, and it scares the shit out of him.
Has Tim been in other relationships? Yes, but Isabel chose drugs, Rachel chose the job and Ashley chose herself but no one, until Lucy, ever chose him, and he has to protect that at all cost. He’s protecting Lucy by distancing himself until he can give himself to her completely, whole and in one piece. She deserves that. She’s worth the effort he’s going to put into himself and by extension, their relationship. Admitting to Lucy that he’s been lying to himself for a long time, is a huge step for him on his road to healing. At the end of the day, Tim and Lucy love each other but if that love is built on a crumbling foundation, then their love simply won’t last.
I’ve seen where people have said that this new arc for Tim goes against all of his growth since season one. I firmly and vehemently disagree. Tim has taken the first step and acknowledged that he has some pretty wicked and quite frankly cruel skeletons in the closet that he hasn’t dealt with. By acknowledging that, he showing continued growth. Tim, with time, therapy and support will get through this a much better man. Those things won’t erase what he’s done but he can right his course and do the right things from here on out.
Whether she’s willing to admit it or not, Lucy needs to heal herself as well. Her parents are down right awful to her… and those wounds run deep. I also don’t believe that’s she truly dealt with the Rosalind/Caleb situation and she really needs to. Hopefully, Tim and Lucy will each start their own journey to healing and find that they’re stronger both individually and as a couple.
Additionally, Lucy broke up with Chris then immediately jumped into a relationship with Tim. She didn’t give herself time to process what she had just been through or why she was feeling the things she was feeling or more importantly not feeling about Chris. She now has the time she needs to process that.
When Lucy and Tim find their way back to one another, (I think something big is going to happen to Lucy and Tim finally pull his head out) therapy and open communication will go a long way to repairing them both as individuals as well as their relationship. They’ll be stronger for it.

I genuinely trusted the writers that they won't use this " I am too damaged to be loved, so I am breaking up with you" trope. Extremely disappointed. I love that they wanted to portray an authentic relationship with all the ups and downs and struggles, but the break up could have been avoided. lWouldn't it be refreshing to see Tim going on a therapy while Lucy accepting his imperfections and traumas?
They literally told us how many times times that Tim and Lucy want to deal with their issues and problems TOGETHER, but Tim just easily gives up on their relationship. This is contradiction as hell.
I really don't think their breakup is definitive, and what you are describing is most likely what us going to happen. The show runners spent way too much time developing this relationship to let it go like this snd I really believe this was just to be a way to show that Tim has reached his lowest point. He is going to get out of it one way or another and my best guess is that he will do it with Lucy in his life
True, I was let down by the affirmations they've said in previous season. I wished Tim just asked for space while he figure things out and not totally break up with her. Lucy would have understood that. They could even go to couple's therapy after he has been working on healing himself but no, they wanted more drama and went with the outdated TV route.

I gotta say, I really appreciate the producers of The Rookie for not going the usual trope of the woman saving the man and bearing all his trauma. It's refreshing to see a guy deal with his own shit on his own for once. I personally hope Chen matures a bit and realises she absolutely deserves someone better because, and I know this is a wildly unpopular opinion, I don't think Tim actually loves her. I think he loves that someone loves him, after the trauma of Isobel and his upbringing, he's clearly been starved of affection and will gravitate to anyone who will offer it. And I hope he works out what he really wants instead of what he thinks expected of him as a man.

My Chenford heart is totally shattered, I’m still devastated. I applaud Eric & Mel for their brilliant acting, but I’m totally annoyed with the writers. As someone who watched in real time & fell in love with Chenford S1, I patiently waited to see my beautiful ship become cannon for 5 years, I was frustrated sometimes but loved their banter & how wonderfully they were written. I was so happy with season 5 & their development & the fact that they have always been there for each other. I’m shocked the writers have taken this path and that we have not even had them together for a season. While I understand Tim’s demons, I can’t understand why the writers choose to not allow them to face the problem together & be the supportive partners they always have been. As hard as it is, I will continue to keep the faith in Chenford as I truly believe they are soulmates, hopefully we get a S7 renewal so this wrong can be righted.
