Superb interpretation with great emotion, great control, he is presenting the beauty of the melody.....seems like he is holding back the strength of his voice expressing the longing in words. Love when Domingo sings this aria but this is simply astonishing.
Such sweetness and inate understanding of the music the composer wrote. It's as if he was there and collaborating with the composer at the time it was written.
I simply love his voice. Very pure, tremendously tender and sweet. Perfect voice for the aria but not the best singing technique for the aria. I normally have ears when I listen the this aria but not while I was listening to him singing.
Kievest-Who gave you the right to have the superb taste to appreciate this gem of gems. I never realized the following so well deserved that the great Leopold Simoneau had. Bravo to you,and especially for this jewel-one of my favourites on you tube.
Simoneau wasn't reknowned for his breath control so much as he was for his absolute purity and nobility of voice, and nuanced interpretations of music across styles.
Thank you so much for posting this ! There needed to be a video of Simoneau singing this aria on UA-cam, I think it's just sublime. There are a lot of versions by Alfredo Kraus, which are wonderful too, but I think this is just as good... as good as it gets.
I love this performance, especially the fact that at the entry point "Je crois.." many singers make the mistake and start with too much force and volume, which kills the whole thing since it is supposed to feel as if in a dream, a mist.
Simoneau is absolutely idiomatic in this piece : vocally sublime, stylistically spot-on and his French is perfect of course. My favorite version along with Gigli's cashmere smooth and creamy own in Italian.
This bloke really is good.as good as any Italian and even better than some. I can see what the experienced critics are getting at when they mention clarity, every letter of diction was precise without effort or slurr.
Listening to this in 2021, after this heart-wrenching aria was used in Florian Zeller’s The Father. Sir Anthony Hopkins reportedly said he specifically wanted to have this piece of music in the film.
For his type of tenor voice (post 1950 anyway) Simoneau stands alone. In his Rep he surpasses ( by a hair, perhaps) both Gedda & Kraus. And in his SANCTUS (Berlioz Requiem) & ORFEO (French version from Gluck) he really is, well, as good as it gets. In Mozart (Tamino & Belmonte) only Wunderlich matches him.
Wow Alain Vanzo!!! Wow. Very different interpretation, so gentle, so tender, so refined. Very exciting. Perhaps a better tenor on record than in person? Having never seen Kraus live it is a guess of a comparison.
Bonjour.
Dear kharma999 you have very good taste for voices. Simoneau is simply perfect in this air, what a gorgeous voice and musical sensitivity...What a delight to listen to him ! The frasing of this air is extremely difficult , subtle & elegant. To me is one of the jewells of the vocal literature, I adore it. Did you hear the duo NADIR -ZURGA from the same opera? Is heavenly beautifull...
rajscreedon69-Does this imply that Kraus and his superb rendition was but one breath better than Simoneau. I don't think that Leopold would be insulted by this.

Quelle belle voix. Douceur et raffinement. Magnifique.

i agree !!!!!!

Lovely. Agree, Simoneau is indeed sublime - thanks for posting

One of the finest interpretations ever recorded..

Omg.....
Wonderful!!!!!!!

*Enchanted sigh* He is tickling me with his voice as if it were a feather.
One of the finest recordings of this most haunting aria. Simoneau was among the very best, with Vanzo, Krause and d'Arkor. how rhapsodic!

bravo !
If you analyze the tessitura (and the dynamics demanded) of the character Nadir, you'll find out that this is the PERFECT voice for the role.
Great version, for me just behind the Vanzo's version...
@rajscreedon69
l think he is the real Nadir. Perfection in diction and emotion.

bravoooo

I agree
❤❤❤
Avec qui a t-il évolué en chant?
you guys try the Tino Rossi version - 1926, hasn't aged a bit

Referencial
Certainly. :)
and a real pianissimo at 3:06 !
not everyone do that...
This is one tone lower than orginal than the original...
@paulostroff99 I couldn't possibly agree more. :)

Like buttah.
