“One of the greatest. “ or “in my opinion the greatest”! At that level they simply cannot be compared to one another. And moreover we generally don’t know all the others.
The look of the chorus ladies says it all. They're so completely enraptured, as am I. Maestro Gedda had THE MOST BEAUTIFUL male voice I've ever had the PLEASURE of enjoying.
Gedda floats a sustained heartbreakingly beautiful high note at 3:01, mezza voce, and again at 3:28 both effortless! A touching performance with the haunting melody from a single piano, and a slight smile, Gedda knows his voice, even at this age, is in fine form. Thank you for posting this elegant version. 💔
'Gedda floats a sustained heartbreakingly beautiful high note at 3:01'. beautiful description. In 1974 I heard on radio Gedda perform this aria, recorded I believe in the 60's and let me tell you, I shiver at the thought of it. The floating, sustained note was so effortless, so tenderly soft, carrying through a musical silent note to the descent. Again, effortless, no straining, a gentle quiet note which, as you say, was heartbreakingly beautiful to be unforgettable and unmatched. Sadly, I cannot find that performance on youtube.
Since I discovered this version, I find myself coming back and listening to it every single day, and sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. It's in my opinion, with Gigli's version, the most emotional interpretation of this song. You can feel the pain of the words. And the fact that Gedda looks vulnerable on the stage here for some reasons, almost like a child over school stage performing an exam on behalf of all school board, add a lot to the drama of this version. This is Gold. And the low views numbers mean one thing, jewels are always hard to find.
This is an amazing technique! Looks almost like playback singing! To look this relaxed when singing difficult pieces is extraordinary! Kaufmann should watch this 😄

@Romeo Cruz i really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and I'm trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.

Everyone's talking about Gedda, though warranted! But nobody's mentioning the wonderful piano work that helps amplify the raw emotion of this performance. Both the pianist and Gedda did splendiferous work making a stunning piece of art for all to see!
Sometimes within this immaculate performance it sounds as though the accompaniment manipulates and takes over as the principal in the relationship. In short both are just brilliant for each other
At the moment (3:00) when Nikolai Gedda takes the top note, the camera is switched from his close-up, to a distant side view. For me , the director of the video shooting should have been put on a stake .
Not falsetto, head voice connected to chest resulting in a somewhat mixed tone, but with good cord closure and harmonics. Beautiful indeed, Gedda is a master of this fabulous head voice.
I'm not really a fan of Gedda's voice, but for a 55 years old who recorded more operas that anyone on earth, his voice is still fresh. And I've never heard such a clear falsettone. I'm tempted to hear more of Gedda.

I will add the same comment. Listening to Nikolai Gedda sing this aria from Bizet's Pearl Fishers is just heartbreaking. I find it hard to comprehend the technicalities and style as the emotion is so over powering. Each time I listen and watch this video I am overcome by the piercing of my heart. And didn't the audience respond. A remarkable video.
I can't believe how effortless he makes this appear. Though Bjorling is my idol, I have always thought Gigli's performance of this to be the greatest. Maybe I was wrong.
Amazing, especially from an artist near the end of his career. I saw Gedda in the theater only twice, but I heard him many times on the records with Beverly Sills. In this aria, my gold standard has always been Gedda and Polenzani. Another rendition, from France Has Talent, which I was sure I would detest, was by Stefan Cifolelli. True, he had a microphone for the tv show, but I was amazed by the technique and beautiful timbre, along with the voix mixte and the messa di voce.
The older generation of tenors learned the art of singing ,
Where are the great vocal teachers who know their stuff and won’t screw you over so you have to have a microphone in your face all the time?

But the camera zoomed out during the part in which I liked to see his face.
It's High C mezza voce no less (which is strange, it should be High B)
can´t you hear his falsetto??

Beautiful Nicolai. And wonderful pianist
One of the truly greath tenors from the past in the peak of his power.
He use the swedish way of singing same as Björling, Nilsson, Lind etc....
Could you explain that further, please?
They were educated in Sweden of swedish teachers .
The difference beetwen Italy singers is they always sing not shouts.😅

With out quistion one of the best tenors ever.
" mezza voce" bellisima !!! un grande tenor, entre los 5 mas grandes de la historia, la voz en la "mascara" la hermosa vieja escuela de canto.
Who are your other four? I hope Jussi is amongst them, and Gigli?
great singer overlooked by many ger
O mon Dieu! Ma quelle finesse!... c'est vraiment extraordinaire!
First time hearing him. I literally cried from beginning to end!
Me too 😭😥😢😓
Outstanding, and wonderful, Je croix entendre encore en GEDDA, The most noble of singers- Gedda, Splendid

I think his performance is the best of them all.

Good, but not the best. Bonisolli, Del Monaco, Gigli are much better!
Björling is the best even Gedda agreed.

Just great. He is one of my 4 favourit teno 4:07 😂rs

Nobody...sorry
I'll pass. Search for Alfredo Kraus singing this and you'll understand true mastery.
GROSSARTIG
Gedda is great, but IMO Kraus is much better in this aria. Way more effortless and legato.
He sung a Great Part in Falsetto Modus, a pity 🎵🎵🎵
It looks and sounds dubbed.

I agree. He switches from head to chest so eloquently that you hardly notice it. And head voice so powerful. Total voice control. In awe.
