This man is better than all of the instruction manuals put together. Easy to follow instructions, tips and settings you would never think of looking for. Improved my photography no end. Thanks Steve.
It is very very important to me. This is what I wanted for the last few months. I did not know how to question this particular. Luckily I got the answer. I got the right thing for me. Thank you.
I just got my new D850 a couple days ago. Your videos and AF Secrets book have been EXTREMELY helpful in learning how to get the most out of my new kit. Keep up the great work!!!
Thank you so much Steve. I just upgraded from my D7200 to a D500, and I have learned so much from your videos and e-books. You need to be on the Nikon payroll!
Hi Steve. Hope you’re feeling better. I bought all the materials you gave available for sale and I enjoy all the ones I’ve had the time to read. Thanks for the free UA-cam videos and keep up the great work.
You have an amazing amount of knowledge to share. I really appreciate you posting the videos and helping so many learn. I have changed to back button focus, auto iso, and auto fine tuned lenses after watching you videos.
I actually had Easy Exposure Compensation on for a try recently, but switched it back off because the camera readings confused me and didn't seem accurate. Watching your Video made me take another try, prooving to myself why it was a bad idea - but then I noticed that it wasn't the case at all. It was just me getting confused by the camera readings. The thing was, when the camera is unable to set my desired exposure, the reading wouldn't show me the set EC anymore, but the current exposure offset from what I want (usually "too dark"). So while I thought my EC was accidently set to -2, I bumped it up even further, saw no change (because it was still too dark) and finaly missed the shot. -- Now I know that when my camera is unable to set my desired exposure, the icon starts flashing to warn me. Yes, I didn't notice that before, so two things learned with one lesson. I think I can call that a win!
Awesome tips. Realized I didn't really understand AF capabilities of my D7100. This video helped a lot, but decided to order the book so that I have something in hardcopy for reference and deeper understanding
For file naming... I always load each camera's shots into their own folder when home, so I use the 3 digit file name to tell me which shooting/setting bank pair I'm using (LND-Landscape, AST-Astro, PAS-Point-and-shoot, LGH-Lightning).
The easy exposure comp setting is an hidden gem! Not only does it make it fast to adjust the compensation, but it also automatically resets itself to 0 when the camera goes in standby mode. I don’t know you but I often forget to reset that kind of setting! The auto reset makes it way more efficient than any dedicated dial...
Hi Steve, I just discovered your channel from that Nikon Rumors post, and I have now been binge watching all your videos for hours. They are really fantastic and I am loving all of them: post processing tips, shooting tips, reviews. This could quickly become my favourite photography channel! I hope you keep up the great work, and create a lot more of these videos.
I love all your videos! Every time that i have problem you are the 1st on the list for me to review what i did wrong. Yes, I am Nikon shooter too. Thank you for sharing your knowledge !
Steve, thanks for the informative video. Getting ready to go out to the Washington coast after several weeks without camera in hand. Needed small reminders to shake the cobwebs off. Just purchased a D850 and am planning on putting it through its paces with multiple settings paired with a number of different lenses. Still working on my ideal custom buttons and dial settings. Your videos really help out in that category.
Just bought your wildlife book, learned a lot from the autofocus book 👍🏻 You better hurry up with your new book, I am a fast reader 🤣😁 I am Dutch but your books are easy to read for everybody that doesn’t have English as the native language. Thanks for all the tips and sorry for my spelling 🤭
Love this dude, good advices, well presented, beautiful spoken (even ppl dumb in english like myself can understand). Bought his af related book, and the one about for wildlife photography. Well worth every penny
Great tips, Steve! Thank you. Looking forward to the publication of your next e-book! Any chance you would write a book on the secrets of the Nikon D850?????
You can also choose a different filename for video's. I set my D850 movie file name to start with MO1 and the D500 to MO2. MO for Movie of course in order to easily separate from picture filenames on the same card.
It’s great that at least Steve hasn’t jumped ship from Nikon. Most of those that I have followed in the past seem to be swooning over other makers like Pentax or Sony. Great stuff Steve
So, I just picked up this new Sony and... Just Kidding :) I'm too invested in Nikon to switch, and I honestly believe that for wildlife photographers they currently have the best system on the planet.
I set fn1 (that is the function button bottom right below the lens on the front on a D500) to toggle between grid view and level view. It allows me to use my little finger to switch function while still keeping index finger in the shutter button and maintaining a decent grip
I use exposure delay in combination with timer and mirror-up mode when photographing events like lunar or solar eclipses. Pressing the shutter release will initiate a 3-second pause, followed by mirror-up, a timed-delay and then the exposure. Though, perhaps a bit AR, it's a great way to allow vibration from pushing the shutter release or mirror slap to dissipate, before the exposure is made.
Hi Bill - On all my Nikons, the camera automatically locks up the mirror in exposure delay mode, even if you're in something like CH (I honestly jus noticed this when putting this video together - I always switched to M UP mode too). However, I also noticed that on cameras with electronic front curtain enabled, when you switch to M UP mode, the camera will lock up the mirror and the first curtain of the mechanical shutter - avoiding mirror slap and shutter shock.
There is an even nicer way for ISO settigns IMO. You can use the movie record button (the red one) and assign it to be the ISO button. It is very close to where the ISO button used to be and works with the dials without turning on the screen! You find it under the f9 settings.
The virtual horizon one I really want to do but I have a question. I have that button setup so that it switches from a single focus point to group focus point. Is there a way to have it turned on all the time in the viewfinder? Or is there a way so that it doesn't take the focus point option away. I'm using a d850
I recently switched from a Sony a55 with 18-55mm & 75-300mm lenses... to a Nikon d7500 with a Tamron 18-400mm lens and I was thinking about getting a 2x converter...is this wise? and if So what would be a good one to get? Also,I can't find a battery base for the 7500 Do you know if they even make one for it? Thank you for your time and help
Hi Steve, thank you for the video! Just one question. Is there a possibility to assign BKT shooting to a Shooting Bank? I mean if I turn BKT shooting ON, and step to another shooting bank, it will stay ON. Is there a possibility maybe to assign BKT as default ON to a shooting bank? Thank you Steve!
Outstanding tips! I'm trying to set my camera up for flash compensation when shooting in TTL mode. Is that possible? I use SB910/ SB900 off camera using a cord attached to the cameras flash hotshoe. I'd like to be able to adjust flash output from the camera body rather than the flash's own menu/buttons.
Thanks for another AWESOME video, Steve! (I have both of your books, too.) I swear, if you ever get assimilated by the Borg (....uh.... I mean....."switch to Sony") I am going to lose all faith in humanity. No pressure.
Thanks - But I doubt that will happen. Not enough big glass, and mirrorless cameras aren't my first choice for wildlife (imagine the horrible balance with a 600mm on a gimbal with a tiny little mirrorless lol). The truth is, I believe Nikon has the best gear for wildlife shooters.

I just found your channel and it’s wonderful. No explosions. No funny hair. Just straight information. Subscribed to all!!!
This man is better than all of the instruction manuals put together. Easy to follow instructions, tips and settings you would never think of looking for. Improved my photography no end. Thanks Steve.
God, you give more info than Nikon itself, bless you!
It is very very important to me. This is what I wanted for the last few months. I did not know how to question this particular. Luckily I got the answer. I got the right thing for me.

Enjoyed both of your 7 tips vids. Great job.
Awesome tips. Realized I didn't really understand AF capabilities of my D7100. This video helped a lot, but decided to order the book so that I have something in hardcopy for reference and deeper understanding
Excellent video
Tip #1 - save settings. I've used this on every Nikon I've ever had... and why I keep those old
For file naming... I always load each camera's shots into their own folder when home, so I use the 3 digit file name to tell me which shooting/setting bank pair I'm using (LND-Landscape, AST-Astro, PAS-Point-and-shoot, LGH-Lightning).
Yes!!! New Steve Perry video, thanks for the awesome tips, always learn something new when I watch one of your videos, keep up the great work...

Unfortunately not for my D610, unless I am mistaken, but thanks Steve I always appreciate your Nikon DSLR INFO.
Yet again a great video just goes to show you that there is always something to learn. Thanks Steve.

Awesome video ,whats the best settings to shoot landscapes on nikon d750?
Thank you! I’m in Canon land and you are my newest Nikon hero.
You can also choose a different filename for video's. I set my D850 movie file name to start with MO1 and the D500 to MO2. MO for Movie of course in order to easily separate from picture filenames on the same card.

Just got my d850, and tried to set movie button for that, and then I realized that d850 has iso button just there...
Artjom Kutuzov 🤦♂️😀
Great Video. Appreciate the tips.
More fabulosity, Steve! I have both your E-books and rely on them plus these videos. Thoroughly invaluable!
Thanks!
Good video. I know pretty much all the features of my camera but struggle to remember them at shooting time!!!
Awesome Thank you. Have missed your informative content.
Yeah, I'm a little slower getting stuff out than I'd like. Things should be back to normal once my current book project is done.
Great vid Steve, will be using the save settings tip between my pair of D500's now!
Very helpful, Great tips
Thanks Steve great tips as always, I just have to coming back to refresh and eventually the knowledge sticks.

I first LIKE your Video Content and then I watch it..
As always , another great vid. At 8:25 , what is that accessory on your flash?
The virtual horizon one I really want to do but I have a question. I have that button setup so that it switches from a single focus point to group focus point. Great video , very informative, can you use any flash ? Or does it have to be a Nikon one ?
I've only used it with Nikon units, but I would think it would work with any flash.
Thank a lot Steve; very helpful indeed! 👍👍
Thanks! Now I don't need to browse your video history to find all my favorite settings, when I have hade my camera at Nikon for service. :)
Thanks mate.
Awesome tricks, Steve!!! Could you make a review on the 600 f/4? I would love to see that!
Great tips!
Great Infio.
Wonderful
Outstanding tips! I'm trying to set my camera up for flash compensation when shooting in TTL mode. Is that possible? I use SB910/ SB900 off camera using a cord attached to the cameras flash hotshoe. I'd like to be able to adjust flash output from the camera body rather than the flash's own menu/buttons.
as always, quality tips
Thanks for another AWESOME video, Steve! (I have both of your books, too.)
