I don't even want to know about the knee.
I don’t think Guy Mezger gets enough credit for the early days of MMA. He gets overshadowed by a lot of other guys (the Shamrocks, Bas, Royce, Severn, Tank) but I think Guy, as well as a few others, get overlooked a lot.
The most over hyped fighter to me is oyce Gracie (I know his name is Royce but I'm poking fun at the adepts of the Gracie cult who parrot the Brazilian pronunciation...) Yesterday I was watching the quite sad Fedor's last fight, but when all the legends of the sport came on the octagon to honor Fedor and pay respect it was quite a moment and I'm sure to have seen a picogram of emotion on Fedor's granite face. oyce camel face with that oversize denture trying to intrude in every framing of the show was the apex of bad taste and creepiness. It was hard to watch. You could clearly see the "true" legends of the sport ashamed for him. oyce is maybe the first artificially hyped "athlete" of combat sports history. Certainly Lawyer Gracie (oiron) and his minions have made a great job (a Brazilian job, but they were more than eleven for sure).

yeah, Guy had real issue before I met him in 06. He told me he had two strokes from the ANSAID he was prescribed. I forget which one it was. He looked and sounded fine but he was fully retired from fighting and working for Chuck Norris. He took care of my licensing for me. I just thought he was a great guy. but he was in great pain from injuries.
Bas stays so cool and collected. He doesn't throw volume at all, every strike is deliberate. It makes his body shots especially deadly. Also his conditioning was amazing. You can see Mezger slow down within 5 minutes or so but Bas stays strong the whole way.

Me and Guy had the same bjj instructor at this time, and he tells us a story about them all hanging out in Japan, I think at this fight, and Bas sneaking up behind him and getting him into a RNChoke, all in good fun, lol. Said Bas was crazy. Surprised at how ineffective Guy was on the ground. Always assumed he was a little more advanced, but I guess he was way more of a striker and wrestler.
no shots to the body... understand we are good friends... *gets reverse mounted* lord Bas you're too fn funny man love ya.. People have told me pancrase is sissy slapping well thats their loss, ive never seen a mma match go without breaks for 20 minutes. Insane stuff..

No sure what that means , if gay men love each other its not manly or is manly love gay Lot of people here afraid of being called gay it seems. Shows lot of insecurity
If they weren't allowed to strike while in top control then I'm not sure why Mezger wanted to keep getting that position. It is almost impossible to submit someone from guard/half-guard/mount. Mezger was handicapping himself in available finishing options
I am always kinda amazed how Bas would basically let his opponents take him down and then let them mount him. I think it was part of his game though, he was a good counter grappler.
Love how Bas is honest and unbiased in his commentary. A true warrior.
Totally agree 👍
Oh how much I love Bas commenting on Bas fights.
It's actually Amazing!
“We had a gentleman’s agreement not to knee the head”
So you try to snap his leg instead? 😂😂 your the best bas, true OG
Its almost eerie how quiet the arena is compared to how UFC is.

Every fight until now has been "take Bas down" solid game plan because Bas has the takedown defense of Royce Gracie.
Lath Law hahahahahaha

I saw him walking around at a NAGA tournament in Dallas. Prob 10 years ago. Still a stud.

Guy is in agony and Bas is jumping and bouncing the ring. Ouch

Pain pills cause pain. You will have less TOTAL pain over time if you tell your doctor to shove them up his prison wallet. All that shit is poison.
I never get tired of watching bas fight or to listen to him speak, smart and funny. No wonder he is so popular among fans and other fighters.

Nice swings. Fresh to see those.
Best one so far IMO.
I would love to meet him such a humble person
Bas was fighting like a modern MMA fighter, 10 years before the rest.
Bas could win this fight much faster by messing Mezgers hair up. You can see how he constantly tries to fix the damage:)
well, he had it in a super ponytail type thing so ..yeah... wouldnt budge much...
Crazy how grappling (jiu-jitsu) has elevated since this time.
3:37 His look says, "What happened to the gentleman's agreement?"

Nice fight. But then again, i like all of the fights. But this one is especially good. ;)
Was the submission a toe hold?
bas rutten the best forever🖒🖒🖒
How’s that not a heel hook? It’s essentially a modification, you figure foured in a toe type hold instead of using your armpit to hold and crank...
both could have ended the fight early*
Oh god that must hurt so bad. But didn't you say heel hooks aren't allowed? That's kind of a heel hook
not allowed anymore
they are in mma at least, i think in some bjj competitions is were they stopped it,and in pancrase
What’s with open hand rule?
Bas you rule!
Does anyone know why Guy doesn't strike Bas when he's in mount? Was it just not common back then or is it a rule thing?
Kind of an unwritten rule between fighters.
Im amaze there not a lot of finger in the eye with the open hand to the face .
makes you wonder why jon jones seems to do it 1 to 3 times a fight.
dana woolaver
That is a good one ! I wonder why the commission still let him put is finger all those time .

Man you have cardio for days!! He was breathing so hard and you were still on idle!
So when your on the ground you can only submit the person is that the way this fighting is
I believe it was just frowned upon by the crowd to hit the opponent on the ground, but not exactly illegal. As per rule-list on Pancrase page on Wiki.
I am always kinda amazed how Bas would basically let his opponents take him down and then let them mount him. I think it was part of his game though, he was a good counter grappler.

Eres excelente con las patadas y los puños amigo pero tienes que aprender lucha y judo. 👍

we need to get bas rutten vs mike tyson sometime soon
What kind of fighting is this?
