Thank you for visiting Pepe. It was an honor having you over. Growing figs have a lot of benefits and of them is the fun of growing them. It feeds the soul.
I grow over 15 Varieties of Figs here in zone 9B, on the ocean on Amelia Island Florida. Due to Tidal flooding if we get a hurricane, I grow every fig in 15 gallon pots. I get 100+ figs a year on each tree. I love the "Beer's" Fig. and Italian Honey Fig.. but they are all wonderful.. Just to many figs each year to eat.. Many years the leaves stay on all winter, until March when the new grow starts. I tried growing Figs in Westchester County NY for 30 years, without one fig! so this is so wonderful growing figs in Florida! Paradise.
Yes, they will. Biggest issue is heavy rain and nematode infested soils. You are growing in pots on a balcony so should not have nematode issues. Best of luck and thanks for watching.
Moved to Port Charlotte from Colorado in August and I brought four Chicago Hardy figs with me. They never had time to ripen fruit in Colorado between late freeze and early freeze. Right now they are dropping their leaves and I assume they are going dormant but when they leaf out I will spray copper for rust which it seemed like they were hit by it in October. Meanwhile, I am excited for the figs to live happily ever after here in Florida.
I have a brown turkey it’s about 8’ tall about 8’ wide it’s been on the ground for about 5 years I live in San Antonio Texas where I have it completely exposed to full sun with no shade I’ve neglected it,water maybe once every 2weeks no fertilizer no freeze protection even with the crazy freeze we had in 2021 it didn’t even effect it this tree gives me loads of figs every single year. This year I pruned it and just stuck the twigs in potted dirt and now I have a lot of 12” fig trees. They are amazing trees with the sweetest fruit any tree that survives the heat and sun that Texas gives are worth planting so I can say brown turkey fig is cold hardy and drought tolerant and full sun tolerant at least that been my experience here. I would like to try different varieties this year because that crazy freeze killed many of my fruit trees avocados,Meyers lemon, ruby red grapefruit, bananas it did not effect my plum tree, pear tree or pecan tree.
Brown turkey in Texas does very well. Not so good in South Florida. Besides Brown Turkey you would be amazed at these others. Norella, Izmir Not, Ruby Rose, and Luv. Delicious thick berry flavored sweet figs. Thanks for visiting and sharing your experience with Brown Turkey.
When he said he fertilizes every two weeks that's when I figured out my problem I was doing every 2 months with compost and chop and drop I've had a brown turkey fig in the dirt just over a year and a half it's about six and a half feet tall and has not fruited. I'm in Florida upper end of 9A West Coast 40 Mi South of Gainesville
What about rootstocks? Do any testing of roostocks that are resistant to nematodes, sycamore figs have been tested and show promise , would be cool to see nice big in ground fig trees here in Florida
I bought a half dead twig of a fig at the HDepot. It has come back in bucket with leaves nice green. Should I clip top when I put in ground. Zone 10 east coast Florida.
Hi Pepe! I just bought a Fig kadota, I live in Miami. Should I keep it in a pot? I really wanted to put it in the ground. I heard that if I cut a hole on the bottom of a plastic pot and plant the pot in the ground that it would be safe from nematodes. The sides would be covered. What do you think? Gracias hermano! Rafael
Yep, a lot of people plant then in the pot with the bottom cut out to protect them from nematodes. The nematodes grow in the first 18 inches of the soil surface downwards. Should be okay but I never tried it. You are going to be doing an experiment I guess. Let me know how it works out in six months. Thanks for visiting my channel.
Hello I wish you can gave advice please we eat a lots of grape leaves but the one I have the leaves are not getting bigger plant looks healthy put small thanks
Some are better than others. Some have experimented with related fig species as root stocks that are very resistant. I just dont recall them right now. Will look it up later let you know.
Thank you for all that info. I am new to figs and love to learn more. What is rigos account? I am in central fl and would love to grow different verity of figs.
We mention that the best way to grow in that instance is to grow in containers with fresh potting soil.. Also the containers need to be elevated above the soil on a protective platform or concrete block.
@@Pepesplants I’m new to your Chanel I planted this fig tree 3 years ago and it Hans’t bear fruit maybe because I haven’t prune it once. Any suggestions how far back should I trim it and what should I feed with
Luv, Norela, Kadota, LSU purple, Alma have done the best for me. Others have had better luck with a few others. I will say it takes a lot of time and attention due to the heat and the heavy summer rains. They seem to thrive in the winter as they barely go dormant. Hope that helps.
I keep my pH around 6.5 - 7 Adjust with Dolomite or Sulphur as needed. Dolomite is added to growing medium to raise pH to the range of 5.5 to 6.5 and to supply plants with calcium and magnesium needed for healthy growth. Dolomite also slowly dissolves in the growing medium over time, helping to counteract the acidifying effects some fertilizers and/or irrigation water can have on growing medium pH. The need for new research on pH has been identified by industry as important due to observation of low pH in many soil and water samples. www.pepesplants.com/fig-trees.html
