I searched how to grow blueberries in florida...I never expected to get brought back to the town in Florida I grew up in! Ft mccoy! Thanks for the info I live in north Florida now with 170 acres that I'm wanting to get started. I sure wish I could talk to yall in person someday. I'd definitely drive to ft Mccoy
This guy needs his own channel... there's a whole generation of knowledge sitting there....
Agreed!!!
Make more content with him lol, first time watching you might have 😅
too much trouble to run a channel. Just let someone else pick his brain on video every so often,
This is so awesome! This farm was one of the coolest parts of my childhood. My grandpa has poured so so much into it and I loved seeing this.
That is fantastic! Nice to see you here, Emmalee. He is the best.
👍👍💜🙏
Im in silver springs and would love to come check out the farm sometime.
That was THE best lesson in growing blueberries that I've ever seen. The man is a wealth of simple knowledge. He didn't get into the weeds, he just put out plain and simple advice. Couldn't have come at a better time as I'm planting my Rabbit Eyes now. Thank you!
Thank you David for not telling him to shut the gator off you had to be thinking people was going to be griping about the noise in the background😂 that's respect kids learn it love it!!
Great video! I bought a blueberry farm in north Florida that was in disrepair. I learned more from this video than anything I’ve been able to watch or read from official publications from associations or universities.
That is wonderful to hear - thank you.
How’s your blueberry farm going now?
This is probably the best video on growing blueberries I've found. Thanks David.
You are welcome. Bill is an expert.
Watching this after DtG mentioned it in a recent video. I just bought half a dozen rabbit eyes for my food forest, and the information here is so fantastic. What a great resource--and what a good man Mr. Hall seems to be!
The best blueberry video I have seen. This guy knows his berries!
I agree 👍💯 I have had such a rough time in growing blueberries. Have a Blessed day 💕😀
Watching this while eating my breakfast of plain yogurt and frozen blueberries.
Love, love, loved this! So much so, that I rewound, and watched two more times. Thank you for dying this video, and sharing this wonderful man with all of us.
So glad I found this video tonight.I just bought my first three blueberry bushes. One of my sawmill customers will give me all the pine bark I can haul and found a farm supply store in Monroeville that had Canadian Sphagnum Pete moss. My blueberry bushes are gonna be happy.Thank you DTG !
Thank you, Mr Hall, for showing us around your farm and for a simple, understandable, common sense lesson in how to grow blueberries. ~ Lisa
I really enjoyed listening to this gentleman’s knowledge!
Very loving video David. Thanks for sharing. Bill, you are awesome. Loved your tour.
So cool, I used to pick at their farm when my kids (adults with kids of their own now) were little. I hope to take my grands there this season, thank you for the reminder!
That is great. The Hall's are wonderful people.
Love it, I have pulled the bushes that were around my electrical and cable boxes at the front of the house and replaced them with blueberries plants. So far so good as I am tasting the first year production. Thanks for the video. Clement
Good work, Clement.
Good idea. If you're gonna have bushes, might as well get some food out of the deal.
The best Blueberry grower in the state you are Bill Hall! Awesome farm!
Hey Sherry. I've been following David for some time now. Isn't he great ?
So, how the heck are you ? I haven't seen you since your guardian adventures. I'm semi-retired now only working for a couple convience store chains! Still cracking safes. Give me a call, same #, I hope the Lord continues to bless you & your family.
Jim
So glad this video is still up. Im probably 30 minutes away from his farm and just lost my container blueberry bush. The entire potted bush just turned brown and died in August 2023. I just discovered out that I purchased Northern highbush plants instead of Southern highbush. Need to try some Rabbit Eye and figure out the best potting mix.
Great video! Bill seems like an awesome guy and I could listen to him all day long. Thanks for all of the great knowledge
What a wonderful man. Thank you for sharing your friendship with all of us!
This man has forgotten more about blueberry plants than most will ever know. Really enjoyed this . Thank you.
What a delight! Thank you so much for this visit and all the practical gems.
‘Been growing them for fifteen years, and learned a few things from this!
Wow this guy knows his blue berries! Great video
Excellent video. Highly informative. It solidified my decisions regarding blueberry plantings. Totally awesome...
I watched this just for the thumbnail. And then was amazed by the actual video content. BTW, can I just adopt this guy as a long lost Uncle?
Wonderful story. I'm inspired now. I'm gonna plant me some rabbit eye in my acidic soil nr Clwrtr. When I was a kid I spent my summers in N WI. The woods were loaded with pine trees and wild blueberries and eatable mushrooms. Those early thoughts of foraging for berries are vividly etched in my mind.
ok, ONE MORE TIME!!! I will try Blueberries for the last time in 2024. This video gives me hope
I was looking to find information about growing blueberries in the south. This video was chalked full of good information. I wish I could visit the gentleman’s U Pick blueberry farm.
Great video thanks for sharing info on blueberries in Florida.
You are very welcome.
That was fantastic. So much knowledge being shared. Thank you
I so enjoyed this video Mr.Hall seems to be a very nice and intelligent man. I learned so much from this video. Thanks!
Fresh blueberry season is our favourite season!
Brooo this guy is a wealth of knowledge. Thank you both!
Great video for FL!! It all depends on the area you live in. In zone 7B Arkansas classic Rabbiteyes are way better than any Southern Highbush. They produce more here and can easily live 40+ years. While I believe in So California Southern Highbush is better.
I totally enjoyed listening to this man. I would love to tour his farm and pick berries.
Nice piece if property you got there. The live oaks are beautiful
Beautiful video! 20 minutes went by fast. Thank you, greetings from Poland.
Hurray for Poland! I have met some wonderful Poles.
Great video on Rabbiteyes.!! My parents have about a 1/4 acre of them.
I just started growing these "Rabbit Eye" Premier. They had berries on them when I bought them.
I remember stopping by and buying Okra. The blueberries were out of season. A fishing buddy stopped by when we left Steinhatchi from a fishing trip.
Thanks. Great video
Love this David very good video this is something I have struggled with for a long time.
This was so cool. Bill rocks. We are been planting rabbit eyes in our backyard food forest. This was great info.
I am having great luck with the Biloxi variety! Great producer and long season!
I've got to buy more blueberry bushes! I lost 2 over the winter. I only had 4 so a 50% loss. I'm thinking about going with a variety that has the berries that ripen all at once instead of over an extended period like my current ones. Do you have any suggestions for zone 7b?
That guy is a wealth of knowledge.
Thank you for this very informative video. Bill Hall seems like a sweetie and I love David the Good!
I've one blueberry bush. Trying it out....should produce next year. Ty 4 sharing. Greetings from Dade City, FL.
Wolf🐺 👍
Don't you need 2 for pollination
@ArtistCreek Yes, mine fizzled out.
Hey, nice t-shirts! Glad I watched this video and took notes. Just picked a couple gallons at a u-pick in nearby Grandin, and thought about planting some seeds. I reckon whatever they were growing will grow for me...if I do what Bill does. Better go gather some pine needles...
My grandmother used to have blueberry bushes that were over 100 years old the house she lived in was built in exactly 1900 in fact it was the old Rosewood house. They were there when she bought the house in 1970s I really wish I got a couple of those before she sold it. But I wasn't into the gardening thing back then. They would sprot new branches from the roots you constantly had to cut them down or they would take up the whole yard and that soil was straight sand and they loved it and they produced a lot. Oh man the more I talk about it the more depressed it makes me. Kicking myself right now.
Wholesome as heck.
That whole area of Ft McCoy, Citra, Cross Creek, and Hawthorne is just the most beautiful part of Florida - and that's one hell of a statement from a Tampa boy!
It is wonderful.
Brother i was about to plant my backyard with all southern highbush lol glad i saw this video
Excellent! Loved every minute. Thank you.🙂
I'm dealing with fungus and some kind of disease where the growth is stunted here in South FL. Southern High bush is very hard to keep healthy.
Awesome video 👍. This guy answered alot of my questions. Thank you 💖☺️🐕🐾🐾🐈🐾
I have 800 windsor, emerald, jewell, and a few more old varieties in my back field right now and I want to be fishing too.
Good morning David. If you're ever on Pine Island drop by and visit us.
Fabulous video! So enjoyable to watch as well as very informative. Thank you 🙏🏻
I live Florida in zone 9b and we get less chill hours than the Ocala area. 200/ year, no more than 300 if we have an exceptionally cold winter. So I thought southern highbush would be better for my area, because they seem to require less chill hours than rabbiteye.
Is that correct?
Well have a few , but are the high bush , I am in SwFL , is it to hot for rabbit eye ?
Did know about pruning the high bush like that , great info
Great video, very informative.
In fact it’s not about pH, it’s about reduced soil, you can thrive them on alkaline soil as well without pH correction, check AEA Kempf video on blueberries !
Thanks Dave. Great video.
How do you get the chill ours required for the blueberry to fruit? Because we all know Florida is a tropical place so theres no chilling time
You are jn N florida where you get frost and have a Spring time.
What about the more Southern parts of Florida where it never freezes or frosts?
Good stuff our generation needs to know this stuff
I agree. Bill has wisdom.
I'm thinking I need to add so.e more coffee grounds onto my 3 bushes. I think I have 2 RabitEar and one southern highbush in large pots. With more organics added it should help out when we get 9 inches of rain like we had three days ago.
Thanks for the video! Have you managed to grow good crops of organic blueberries in Florida and in the tropics, David? I'm in a swamp in southern coastal SC, which is pretty much north Florida climate, and I've always had bad luck with blueberries, maybe its the heat and humidity and all the flooding. I'm having slightly better luck now using fabric pots and pine needles in the container mix. Should I grow Rabbit-eye or Southern Highbush? I'm not sure which varieties I have now. Thanks for the blueberry information David! Cheers!
Great video! Very helpful. I have 4 emerald that are amazing producers! I'm in central Florida 9a/9b. I planted them in cattle mineral bins that I made in to self wicking tubs. It's been very successful so far. I couldn't find any more last year so I ended up buying 8 that are labeled "assorted blueberries". I know it wasn't the most wise decision. I have them potted for now in a different area of our food forest. Is there a way to tell what kind they are? 6 of the 8 have a generous harvest on them already and they are rather small yet. Thank you for any info!
I only have a small property but trying to produce all the food I can… this year I seem to be getting rust on leaves.. we have had a very humid spring already and hot but I’m not sure if they should be culled (it’s pretty much all 4 of my plants) but I have some in a different location and they are too shaded (not producing well but growing) but seem to not get rust as much… maybe just this season? Any suggestions for organic treatment ? I am just north of middle GA if that helps at all sounds like GA should be a give climate for blueberries so I’d love to be able to keep them and keep them building structure for years to come… I will absolutely be putting down pine needles from now on wonderful time thank you sir
milk spray with water...google it.
@@robmontgomery9711 thank you sir
What are the hills they are planted on made from?
I've got a lot of good ideas. Like I know where to get pine bark. Thanks.
Hi David thank you for sharing such a very informative video. Could show the blueberries seeds from one hand smashed blueberrie, I have what looks like a blueberrie tree or bushel, I hand smash one blueberrie, it has 4 tp 5 hard seeds, so I cannot eat one blueberrie unless I take off its seeds
I'm not too far from here. I'm in Clay county and I'm getting ready to plant a few rabbiteyes and a couple of highbushes. However I have a question about the video. I noticed when he was talking about the highbushes he said they do better with a little bit of shade. Does that apply to both rabbiteyes and highbushes or just the highbushes?
The rabbiteyes do not mind a bit of shade. They often grow wild at the edge of the woods.
@@davidthegood good to know. Thank you 👍
I’ll keep buying them! Never mind , too many variables for me!
What an amazing amount of wisdom and information. David do you know what the varieties most likely are in most grocery stores? I want to try and save seeds for both Blueberries and Raspberries from the store, but here in Thailand I have no idea what the varieties might be.
I planted a couple different kinds of blueberries on the sunny side of a huge pine tree. The pine tree got hit by lightning and wind one christmas and slowly died. The blueberries are still doing great. Never water them with the water from the hose. Our ground water is too alkaline.
I have read that pine bark but not pine straw will help acidify soil.
Really enjoyed this video. 😃
How can you tell when they need fertilizing? Considering a group of high bushes (also zone 9)
This was an awesome video! What rabbiteye variety do you recommend for a middle Georgia permaculture Homestead?
sweet production
i always wonder if those black hoses spew out HOT water when they are first turned on, like regular hoses do....which burns the roots.how do you overcome this or is it even a problem?i ask because if you put water into something painted black, the sun will heat up that water.have you ever gone out and FELT the first issue of water with your hands? ive heard people having trouble with their plants and it turned out the water was simply too hot when it hit the soil..idk though.
I have a flowering blueberry which I buy today. can it making fruite this year?? i must put vinegar with water? Thank you for help
I saw there’s a few rabbiteye varieties, which variety and where to buy it? Thanks!
We bought two plants a couple years ago and they just never grew. Should I dig them up and put the pine mulch in the hole and re-plant, or just mulch the top of the soil around the plant ?
Being from N Fla, I would think that Live Oak leaves would be better around berries as they vreak down faster than Pine Needles & supply own compost that way ? I feed the bees sugar water when the flowers run low.
when can I plan to plant 3 gallon rabbit eye blueberry for my home in Sebastian FL
nice video yesterday I got two blueberry 2 raspberry and 2 thorn less blackberry.
Great!
Lawtey here. New to Florida. Loved this video. Would love to take my littles to your farm.
Goodness gracious! I just realized that my husband bought me your book for Christmas! God is good!
New sub here great video. I’m in Florida too and man o man my blueberries are out of control. Thanks for sharing wow 1978 god bless my brother
Thank you - welcome! Glad your'e here.
Awesome!!💜🙏
I was wondering if I can plant in late May I just moved here (Sebastian Fl)
Yes.
Just keep them watered, and make sure you have lots of pine bark around them.
Great🔘 farmer I'll have to go check it out! Our non profit is near there!
Hi, what variety is that late bloomer one which gave berries til July?
Will in able to grow blueberries here in Fort Myers in containers?
I'm not sure. I would try Southern Highbush types - call your local extension office about it. However, there are other small fruits that like that tropical climate better. Black Surinam cherry, mulberry, Jamaican cherry, Acerola cherry, Jaboticaba and Cherry of the Rio Grande are all personal favorites. Embrace the tropics!
I wish i have blueberry plant watching from Philippines 🇵🇭
Good video... Thank you...
I am wondering about how he controls birds eating all his berries - or does he just out produce the amount of berries the birds consume. I am a backyard grower with 3 plants and the birds completely wipe out the harvest unless I build a cage around the bushes.
