  • In this video I solve the great mystery of how to scan 4x5 negatives on an Epson V600 scanner (which is only designed for 35mm and medium format negatives). I’ll walk through the process using an awesome 4x5 shot I’d scanned and edited before.
    A couple notes:
    1) I kept saying “film holder” when I meant “negative holder.” My bad.
    2) The model in the photo is Arriana Cruz, @Lynx_of_the_snow on Instagram. I’ve photographed her several times and she’s a joy to work with.
    3) At right around 3:20 when I mention “having the white in there” I’m referring to using your cursor on the preview scan to select the area you want to actually scan. Some photographers say to add extra space around the image, including the white space around some of it. That’s what I usually do, and I’ve noticed that when I select the right area the preview image suddenly pops brighter and sharper. When I don’t select the right area it looks grayed out.
    4) Since this is a negative I’d previously scanned and edited I didn’t worry about dust and debris. If this had been my first time scanning it I would have blown the dust off the negative and scanner, then wiped the scanner glass with a lint-free cloth. And then I’d still have tons of dust and debris to edit out.
    5) If someone watches this and says “This guy is a dumbass and doesn’t know what he’s doing,” they’re right! I’m figuring it out on the fly, and all I’ve really cared about is the end result. I’m sure there are numerous better ways to scan negatives, and I’m not claiming my method is the best or only way. If anyone can give me good advice on doing it better, I’m all ears.
Thanks guys, please hit me up with any questions.

The simpler way is to use a digital camera and photograph them. If you use the HDR technique, it gives far better results than the V600!

I tried that with my Canon 5DMk3 several times, never liked the results. Granted, I was probably doing it wrong.
