I stayed in guesthouse sometime. There were no trouble of wild camping, just go find a quiet place/ don't get into private places/ make sure you don't bother other people.
I am going in November for a month trip starting in Kyoto ending in Hiroshima, I expect temps around 10Deg +/- a few @ night. March is very Nice.. well into the teens at night.
it depends on weather/viewspot/road/mood. sometime 60KM per day, sometime80-100, sometime120-150, sometime i stay. i don't ride fast and far every day because i take pictures and film a lot. i think it's important to start early in the morning, you can enjoy the sunrise, also have enough time to ride which gives you flexibility to mange/change your plan every day.

Starting from oct 28 : kyoto -> shikoku -> kyushu
March is perfect weather too, probably stays in range 10-12 degree
