Ford government cracks down on cell phone use, vaping in schools

- As Tina Yazdani reports, this isn't the first time the Ford government has attempted to crack down on cell phone use in schools, but the education minister says this time will be different as cell phone distraction becomes a growing problem.
i remember the young guys on jobsite going to the bathroom 5 times a day to hide their cell phone use and then wondering why they got laid off
No phones in parliament!
No phones at work, no phones for anyone, must teach the dangers of technology.
Well I hope they don't expect the teachers to enforce this. Students don't listen to them already. Probably need a couple security guards on site to enforce this and leave the staff out of it.
That’s exactly the problem. Kids do not listen to teachers anymore.
Is the gov funding those security increases?
Is that what you want? A guard confiscating/searching kids on the daily? For a phone?
@@lewiskoluk8749get the communism started early.
@ghoponit it's generic authoritarian. Not much to do with an economic model.
I bet there are a few retired military willing to take a job as phone police....they learned discipline, now teach it
Just place signal blockers in the classroom.
Isnt it already banned to use your phone or to vape ?
Seems like this will put teachers in dangerous situations
If your classes were interesting and engaging they would not be on their phones
What a terrible argument.
@@spiritcrunchits a great argument actually, literally everyone in the world can tell you that if their engaged in something their interested in their less likely to think about their phone or much of anything else.
Is it not for the parents to monitor device use?
Fantastic distraction from the huge budget cuts to education. Also, they cracked down on cell phones in 2019. There's no difference between those two crackdowns. Who's enforcing this stuff?
Anyone else only have audio coming from the right channel when playing this video?
Ya... no, that isn't going to be possible. Kids can be extremely good at skulduggery and are addicted to phones. This would take a monumental effort that I just don't expect will be properly done, odds are they'll ask the teachers to just confiscate phones, teachers the students have zero respect for the authority of.
I feel teachers today just don't want to discipline anymore either. Good luck to them.
hopefully parents will do whats right and be a parent and not try to be a buddy or friend to their children
What's got me is how conservatives are suddenly fine with government workers searching kids/ taking peoples property on a whim...
Facts, the main issue here is parents not parenting@@hockedad3585
@@Krisp138ya their too busy teaching little boys to be little girls lol
What happened to cracking down on cell phone bills?
Pretty bad when the GOVERNMENT has to step in and do this. Overpaid teachers don't do anything in their classrooms anymore
Perhaps the Ontario Govt should be using their energy/money to come up with a health initiative to reduce [cell phone] addictions ? Wouldnt that be something: sector working together to better each other, as well as their own issues
Living their lives on a 3x5 screen.
Perfect.
Bravo, Mr Ford! Finally, it will be fixed. I agree with some comments that the cell phone should be banned on work place.
Government doesn't run business, sport, and thank God for that
There will be a caveat for people to keep them if they have a diagnosed anxiety condition or similar. Then there will be record numbers of kids in Canadian schools with anxiety reported on this same site next year. Ohhh sooooo sad! This was about 10 years late.
You did this in 2019 though, but no one enforced it.
I want our Ontario Government to improve our education system for teachers and students. Investing more in education for the next generations. If not, social media is the school for our next generations.
Amazing news. Teachers are predictably against whatever Conservative gov't does, couldn't care less about children. What's the major concern of the teachers? Teachers, of course.
Why is the gov asking them to do work that isn't teaching when also not funding education?
Why is the gov making pointless, unenforceable rules?
@@lewiskoluk8749Discipline is part of teaching in a proper civilization.
@@spiritcrunchespecially a communist country
@spiritcrunch that's kinda meaningless.
Giving extra, extremely hands on, work. While decreasing funding?
Makes it a distraction, not anything serious.
Much like many of his policies...
Whining about discipline is, just a useless whine.
Of course they will, very few teachers are there other than to get a pay cheque ..... it is called unionization, first step to Communism....What would you expect from a NDP party
JUST HIRE ROBOTS AND YOU WON'T HAVE THAT ISSUE....ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE LEADS THE WAY
Fewer student protests too. Pension payouts.
when i was in school cellphones were far and few between
honestly vaping thc is healthier than nicotine and vaping it self is not worth it smoking cannabis should be allowed like medication but just not allowed to use it in school but they should just end vaping and just have cannabis as a smoking choice
About time school has no place for vaping
This is why i miss the early 2000s. Almost every student was actually sociable, respectful, and attentive.
And honestly im glad, with teachers telling kids thinks like boys can be girls and vice versa id say the less kids paying attention the better
look at these kids we are raising, this is concerning, they think they are entitled to use their phones in classrooms?? i didnt even know they were allowed? when did it become acceptable in the first place. Canada educational system is in shambles
Ya they are entitled to use their phone in the classroom especially when in the presence of child grooming pedos. Which is probably the real reason the schools want phones that coincidentally have cameras on them banned from schools
Thank goodness i graduated high school
Good
Bad.
put in cell phone jammers
while they are at it they can change the school system too, there is a lot they should be learning in school they already dont. 5 years being done now and more often than not i either learn something i should have learned in school or search something up and figure it out myself instead.
GOOD!!
about time
what? how do you enforce this?
Take them away.
Jamming tech.
@@Xocolatben you dont think that they would then enforce that same jamming tech on gen pop right?
At the private school I went to if you were caught on your phone in class your phone was confiscated for 1, 7, 14, or 30 days depending on how many offences you had. Needless to say anything past a 1st offence was a rare occurrence.
@@ryanlanglois2886 Public school was similar, less structured rule wise but similar. Im dating myself but social media wasnt even a thing back then. Thats why Im wondering how they enforce no Facebook as an example. Its not the most popular amongst younger gen. but FB is #1 in Canada for social media and times now make it seem like kids basically live "in" their phones. I guess Ill have to see how they actually stop ppl from using it at school. Cant wait for the hypocrisy with teachers and staff using their phones infront of students. Im sure it will go over well.
Teaching cell phone etiquette and critical thinking skills when digesting content should be front in centre in preparing children for life. Then again, most teachers lack that skill as well. They say teaching is 95% retention though.
WHOMP WHOMP YOU AINT TAKIN MY SHIIIII HAHHAHAHA
Stop what you're doing and listen to what's coming.
Ford should be given a drug test every day
I mean the idea is nice but couldn’t teachers always take away the phones? I’m not a teacher so my view may be an inaccurate one but is it really that bad?? Of course we know people are addicted to phones but I feel the average student knows when to put their phone away…and the few that are neglecting their education will likely leave the class before they let you take their phone anyway so?? what’s the announcement for lol?
How about work places don’t just blame kids today it’s everyone
The private sector sets their own workplace rules.
What about workplaces? You understand this is a free country and not a communist dictatorship like china right?
While unrest unfolds at campuses, honeydew Ford tackles the *real* issues
What should he do about the campuses?
Don't worry, their waiting for that goof Trudeau to call in the horses for these protests too, since he claims to care about fairness and all.
Good! It's about Time in reality. Schools always had rules in the past with other technologies such as not being able to use calculators or other aids while in class or exams. This is not different. You go to school to learn. And it should be the same at work too. If you're an adult you should only be allowed to reply to personal msgs at breaks and emergencies. Maybe the work thing is harsh to some but come on already. Everyone is plastered to their devices 24/7 already. It should be normalized that social media is banned from access in the school divisions.
Idk how many decades ago you went to school but not only have they allowed calculators in class and during exams for a long time they have actually encouraged it
I agree with the education minister. They should ban them unless it's a device that is clipped in the pocket of the disabled child
Cool idea.. how you going to enforce it?
Kick kids out of school? Defeating the point.
Or have somebody searching /confiscating things from kids all day?
Whose paying for that?
I wonder if cell phones having cameras that can record teachers behavior and what their exposing children too could have anything to fo with the education minister wanting cell phones banned
@@jeremybenoit759 this is the ontario conservative government... at least read the headline.
Exactly how do they plan to enforce this?
They can confiscate your phone if the government passes these rules
They see it they'll take it away
Did any of you actually go to school?
@@ZenCorvus have you been in a school lately? Just try and take a phone from a student and see what happens.
@@ziggycorfield5904that is exactly the problem. why is their reaction a problem? School have authority to enforce it. somehow it is ok to enforce gender ideology but not ok to enforce no cellphone. 🙄
It’s extremely important and number one priority problem in Ontario schools.
Oh? you sure its not the pedophellic child grooming? Idk that seems like a bigger issue to most people
You sure, cuz most people seem to think the biggest issue is the drag queens and child grooming.
Are kids more disrespectful than ever? Are teachers more limp wristed than ever? Or a combination of both?
What do you mean by limp wristed? Any teachers lay a hand on my child and thell be broken wristed
@@jeremybenoit759 it's a figure of speech. You can discipline without being physical. Stern teachers are necessary imo.
Waaaayyyyyyyyyyy toooooooo late on this !
Try making school more fun than staring at a cell phone screen.... maybe kids would be engaged if they were being taught real world skills that will help them succeed in life rather than learning how to be good minimum wage servants.
Well, this isn’t going to work.
Confiscating phones and contacting parents works. We already do that here, I take away an average of 2 per day. Take one from the first idiot playing games in Class and everybody else gets the message.
@@KNR90 wow how brave and powerful of you🙄, this is why teachers are just big bullies. Next person you steal a personal belonging from should sock you one.

Parents bubble wrapping their kids scream "what about emergencies" which, to those parents, is everything.
Neurotic parents don't like this.
I dont see a problem with this
Too bad the same thing won't be done in the workplace. It's not just kids that are addicted and distracted.
Yes but controlling adults. That a big no no as that was stop in 1834
@@TheCanuckCanadain I wasn't suggesting that it can or will be done. I was just pointing out adults are just as bad because nobody holds them responsible when they are distracted away from working, parenting or simply paying attention rather than doing what's needed at that moment. Long overdue however if someone get an emergency call and they can't answer it's a lawsuit waiting to happen
No it's not. Minors do not have any legal responsibility that would cause a legal burden on them. Plus you would just call the school and have them come to the office in case of emergency. You are the world's worst fake lawyer

You're such a low effort troll
Too little too late. Moral decay mixed with entitlement from coddled parents not knowing right from wrong put this here. Get the parents to pay for the fix people, not the government.
Not my problem they said....
Almost impossible to get accountability from the public for their choices; they're still in love with their phones.
Get the parents to pay not the government? And where exactly do you think the government gets their money?
