    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Dottie (Geena Davis) tells the pitcher how to strike out her sister Kit (Lori Petty), but Kit proves them wrong with a home run that wins the game.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
The All-American Girls' Professional Baseball League was founded in 1943, when most of the men of baseball-playing age were far away in Europe and Asia fighting World War II. The league flourished until after World War II, when, with the men's return, the league was consigned to oblivion. Director Penny Marshall and screenwriters Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel re-create the wartime era when women's baseball looked to stand a good chance of sweeping the country. The story begins as a candy-bar tycoon enlists agents to scour the country to find women who could play ball. In the backwoods of Oregon, two sisters -- Dottie (Geena Davis) and Kit (Lori Petty) -- are discovered. Dottie can hit and catch, while Kit can throw a mean fastball. The girls come to Chicago to try out for the team with other prospects that include their soon-to-be-teammates Mae Mordabito (Madonna), Doris Murphy (Rosie O'Donnell), and Marla Hooch (Megan Cavanagh). The team's owner, Walter Harvey (Gary Marshall) needs someone to coach his team and he picks one-time home-run champion Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks), who is now a broken-down alcoholic. After a few weeks of training, as Dugan sobers up, the team begins to show some promise. By the end of the season, the team has improved to the point where they are competing in the World Series (which is no big deal, since there are only four teams in the league).

It doesn't!! At all! And it still bugs me bc no matter how many times I've seen it - & it debuted in theaters on my 13th bday, they day I went with friends to see it and Im now looking down the barrel of turning 40 - so I've seen it well over 100 times over the years. I have tried to convince myself its ok that Racine wins (which they did irl they just weren't playing the Peaches) I just cant! I always want Dottie to not drop the ball (whether purposefully or not - another debate Ive often engaged in). It is the most intense scene every single time you watch it! Incredible!

@@baseballjen girl I’m right behind you having turned 38 in October. We were blessed growing up in the era we did. What are the movies in today’s generation that are comparable to the movies that were iconic to us? Nothing. @@meyloose1013 I love ALL of those! Did you ever see Little Big League? Came out around the same time as ROY! A kid ends up owning the Twins & ends up being manager - bc he really knows EVERYTHING ABOUT GHE GAME! I like bc its as unrealistic as breaking your arm & suddenly being able to pitch in the majors but it is more about knowledge of the game! But you are so right! Nothing compares & these days everything are remakes like 90% of the time! And I used to watch the Mighty Ducks like 24/7. I was so obsessed with that movie Im glad you brought it up! Sandlot is obviously wonderful but it never slips your mind, ya know?! But the Mighty Ducks! Wow! Im glad you get to share those w/your nieces & nephews. I have one nephew who is now 12 - and while my brother is a big baseball fan & my nephew gets into sports sometimes, esp when the A's are in the postseason! LOL! But I doubt even a couple years back that he'd sit & watch those movies with me! So sad that my bro and sis-in-law didn't raise him on those! I enjoy convos like this!! And if you haven't ever seen Little Big League, see if it streaming. Its worth like an hour & a half of your time even at 38! Hell, I'd come watch it with you if I knew where you lived, if it was nearby & there was no such thing as COVID (ruining everything! Ugh!)! LOL! Anyway ... thanks & have a great day! Here's my own observation on the "did Dottie drop the ball on purpose" argument. At the beginning of the movie, older Dottie tells her older grandson to let his little brother win once in a while. This clearly foreshadows what comes later in the movie. However, since the earlier scene is actually in the present and the later scene is in the past, which scene is actually doing the foreshadowing? You could argue that the early scene means she dropped the ball on purpose to let Kit win, just as older Dottie tells her grandson. But, it could also mean that young Dottie fully intended to win and had no intention of dropping the ball, but when it happened to her and she saw Kit's reaction at beating her, she then understood that her younger sister having the winning moment was the right thing to happen, not just for Kit but for their larger relationship as well. And it was this that foreshadowed older Dottie's comments, not the other way around. Just my 2 cents.

    • @hobbes0022
      @hobbes0022 4 роки тому +20

At the beginning of the movie older Dottie does not tell her older grandson to let his brother win once and a while, what she says "GIVE HIM A CHANCE TO SHOOT". Dottie stated at the end of the movie, that she got Kit into spring training, that was her giving Kit a 'chance to shoot'.

    • @suneyeintuition4315

I think you understand the movie better than most people. I think that's exactly what it means. She saw and realized at the end of the game how much had Kit needed a win...any win...for a long time. She never let her win anything, not even a race to the barn to do chores. It wasn't even all what Dottie did though. She was treated as inferior by everyone around her, because Dottie's looks and talent were far above average. Dottie was humble and was as blind to that fact as she was to Kit's need for validation and respect. Kit would have actually been highly complimented for her skill in many families and communities. But next to a sister who was exceptional in every way, she was invisible. So the climax of the movie was like a balloon popping. I think Kit standing in Dottie's shadow the entire movie and the continued disrespect by people, even after leaving Oregon, was kind of foreshadowing too....that something was going to happen for her. It was life experience for Dottie too, who had never really had to experience a humbling loss. She even got her husband back from war like a divine miracle.

El Padre con Verga Larga I don’t buy it. If that was the case and her being the best player....why come back at all. She’s a competitor. Imagine telling Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson etc., that they needed to let the other team win once in awhile.
Jimmy tells her when shes leaving that he knows deep down she’s a gamer and a competitor, no matter how much she tries to deny it.

Evelyn was yelled at by Jimmy for throwing home, and then again he talked to her about not throwing to the relay (wo)man again, but in a nice way. In this scene, she gets it right and has a moment to say "got it!" I thought that was a nice touch.

This is the perfect ending because it IS ambiguous. I like to think Dottie was to competitive to just drop the ball and let the entire Racine team down just to make her sister feel better. Dottie was a stone cold killer on the field, but I think Dottie would appreciate her sister finally getting the better of her but would never cheapen it by letting her have it. She always just wanted her to realize her potential and stop being a spoiled brat. She was always Kit’s biggest fan.

There was a movie in 2000 that should have remained ambiguous: _Rules of Engagement._ Samuel L. Jackson orders the marines to open fire on protestors outside the American Embassy in Yemen. No guns are found on them later. The State Department and administration blame him for this and he's put on trial. We don't know whether his lawyer, Tommy Lee Jones, is trying to get a guilty man off or the prosecution is trying to put away an innocent man, perhaps because Realpolitik means there otherwise will be retaliation against Americans (in real life the USS Cole is attacked months later from Yemen). They spoil it by showing a video tape and scenes of the crowd, so you know whether they are armed and shooting the embassy or not.

Edged Line I appreciate your analysis, but I still strongly believe that she did not drop the ball on purpose. I think that if the filmmakers wanted that to be the outcome, they would’ve made it more clear. It was so important for Kit’s character to out-and-out beat her sister, for once, and so she did. I would say that Dottie telling her older grandson to let his younger brother win, as you put it, had more to do with her own experience of never allowing her own, younger sister to win. If nothing else, the connection you made is interesting and thought-provoking. There’s nothing wrong with that, of course 👍

Why did she literally do everything else along the way to win? She got the go-ahead hit in the top of the ninth, she went into the dugout to get the second out in the bottom of the ninth, and she told Ellen Sue what she thought would be good advice to strike her out. Second, more importantly, Kit was the better baseball strategist here. Watch the entire movie - Dottie always knew baseball, remember when she and Jimmy got into an argument over coaching? And when she saw Kit run past the stop sign from her coach, she literally did not know what to do - the look on her face says it all. At that particular point, Kit was the better baseball player.

It also showed earlier that Dottie can take a hit from a base runner no problem. Dialogue throughout the movie kept saying she didn't love the game as much as her sister. I think this scene was left in ambiguity for a reason. At the end it all worked out for the best. If however Dottie wouldn't have dropped the ball & would have won, the cost might be that she would lose touch with Kit as this was already a strained relationship and to top it all off it would really touch a nerve to Kit. Knowing that she was always in her sister shadow because Dottie was more popular, prettier, more confident, smarter and better than her in most things (also Dottie had a husband and Kit didn't) The only reason she was invited to be a part of the league was because of Dottie ultimatum they include Kit and at least now she showed them all that she belong's there.

I don't know why you guys prefer the ending "Dottie let go the ball, so her little sister can win." Imagine: As an older sibling, I wouldn't want to make an easier way for Kit (my younger sibling) to win. I want her to beat me, fair and square. Just imagine the training that Kit probably had done behind the scenes, IN ORDER TO BEAT DOTTIE. It's obvious that Dottie was fear-freezed when Kit came hurling towards her with such intense, malice look on her eyes. Thus, she dropped her ball. She didn't expect this would happened! The calm, cool and collected Dottie made a mistake in her calculations.
To put it simply, an older sibling would want the best of the best for their younger sibling. Dottie just wants Kit to win, through her own hardwork and perseverance. The smile on Dottie's face when she saw Kit was carried as a hero, was a sign of familial happiness for her sister. I bet Dottie thought, "She finally have grown up." SHE MUST BE HELLA PROUD OF KIT'S SUDDEN INCREDIBLE SKILL.
Edit: y'all can disagree with me. but i truly believe that this is what happened. theres no way im going to give an easy way out for my younger sibling to beat me, especially if i love the sport and the competition!!
Edit: After the match, it's a clear sign that Dottie bought her team's flag, in order to prove HER LOYALTY TO THE TEAM, while Kit was giving autographs to her fan (and Kit saw her older sister's loyalty too) Idk why you guys like to think she did it on purpose. but meh, whatever.

I'm of the camp that believes she dropped it on purpose. Perhaps she initially wanted to win -- which is why she returned for Game 7 and why she played hard against her sister and told Ellen Sue to pitch high -- but I think once she saw Kit rounding third (even though the third base coach was giving her the stop sign) she made the split-second decision to give it all to her sister, because had Rockford won, Kit would've been rightfully blamed for Racine's loss, since she took the risk to go home. There was no need for her to do that. The game was tied thanks to her triple, and even if the next batter struck out, they would've gone into extra innings until someone scored.
So if Kit had been called out, she would've been dropped from the team for losing them the title -- or even the league altogether, since no other team would want her for making a foolish decision. She'd have to return home to Oregon with her tail tucked between her legs and once again be second-best to Dottie, because then Dottie would be seen as the hero. The announcer even says after Dottie caught the ball in the dugout, thus making the penultimate out of the game: "There's not question who the star of this game has been!" So even up to the last out, Dottie was dominating the praise -- also remember, her double in the top of the 9th caused both Mae and Doris to score, giving Rockford the lead -- and had she held on to the ball and won the World Series, she would've been bigger than ever -- and Kit would be the pathetic loser who was sent home packing.
I think Dottie realized this, and as Kit came barreling toward her, she made the instant decision to give her also-ran sister the win. After all, Dottie was quitting the league after the game and returning home with her husband to start a family. She had no further use for it. But the league was everything to Kit. It allowed her to escape from home (where she was most unhappy), and the win finally gave her the chance to also escape from under her older sister's shadow. It made her a star in her own right, and in the context of the film gave her a place in baseball history since her actions won her team the first World Series of the AAGPBL. None of this would be possible if Dottie hadn't dropped the ball.
Furthermore, there was also foreshadowing to the climax. At the beginning of the movie, Dottie tells her oldest grandson to give his little brother a chance to shoot the basketball. But the most telling was when, during the season montage, a bigger player from Racine knocked over Dottie and she still held onto the ball.
So in conclusion, that's why I believe Dottie dropped the ball.
ETA: For those who might argue that Dottie wouldn't let her team down, well, her sister's happiness and well-being were more important to her, as evidenced in the fact that Dottie agreed to travel to Chicago for the tryouts so that Kit could have a shot at the league and when she asked to be traded to another team so that her presence wouldn't overshadow her sister. Also, in the touching scene between the sisters following the game, Dottie made it clear that she wouldn't miss the league but she would miss Kit. Like she said, baseball was just something she did, but her relationship with her sister was of utmost importance.

+bruceleedisciple I acknowledged that in my first paragraph. But if Kit had been called out at home and they went into extra innings and the Peaches won, Kit would've been the scapegoat, because there was no need for her to go home, since the next batter could've brought her home, but we'll never know. Also, she would've been disciplined for disobeying the 3rd base coach, who was signaling her to stop. But she had something to prove, at the expense of her teammates..

I disagree, Dottie didn’t make any decision, she was basically suffering from severe shock as soon as Kit hit the high fast ball. This shock exponentially increased when she saw her kid sister barreling towards her with vicious malice in her eyes. Dottie did not properly brace for the collision, and Kit was able to take advantage of the situation.
How could this be? Kit probably played this dream scenario over and over and over in her head a million times, as soon as she passed second base the dream actually started to happen. She would run past third, and she would meet Dottie at the plate. A lifetime of always being second best, of always living in the shadow, would come to a head.
Dottie never considered her kid sister, her little baby sister, the little tyke that was good at hurling a baseball, would ever want to purposely create a collision with her at home plate. Her sister was a sweet kid, she was completely off the radar as being a threat. So no, I don’t think Dottie dropped it on purpose. But I do think kit got a little lucky. Dottie wouldn’t make the same mistake twice.

From her telling her older grandson to let his little brother have a chance to shoot the basjetball, to actualy going to the tryout, to insisting on being traded or she was leaving, Dottie always had others (namely Kit's) best interest at heart knowning Kit was always in her shadow. Nevermind the fact we saw Dottie make spectacular catches, a routine play at the plate was "child's play" to someone with her skill. Dottie during the whole game has shown no signs of throwing the game. What would be the point of Dottie throwing the game, to say, "Hey sis, I threw the game just to throw you a bone." Dottie has too much respect for her sister, the game, and her teammates to do something underhanded like that and Dottie's character isn't like that.

It's interesting to hear about the theories, just like Jack and Rose in Titanic, weather Jack could have survived by both of them on the floating board. Me personally, I believe Dottie didn't drop it on purpose. She's just as competitive as Kit and wanted to win, otherwise she wouldn't have come back. Now that Kit was on a different team, she can't blame Dottie or use her to hide her insecurities and failurez. She now is being held accountable for her actions, which is why she's was crying before she was up to bat. Kit had to prove to herself and to others she can win without Dottie. Dottie, being the big sister, wants Kit to be successful and stand on her own but she know Kit has to earn it and not enabke her, which is why I believe she advised Hellen Sue to throw high fast balls, one of Kit's biggest weaknesses.

Dottie realized this, was taken aback/stunned and then ultimately accepted and embraced it with open arms in the scenes after Kit's life's worth of passion, courage and steely determination trumped Dottie's natural talent when she made her drop the ball.
It's a quite popular theme in many stories about rivalries, least of all a sibling rivalry. Natural talent versus hardwork/determination. More often than not, it's the latter that wins in the end.
I'd like to think Dottie never dropped that ball on purpose, it would take away from both of their characters if she did otherwise in favor of as someone says, "misplaced compassion". A real sister would want their other/younger sister to accomplish something they badly wanted on their own terms. And a great player like Dottie would always put team first (that's why she thought of transferring teams because the sisters' volatile relationship was tearing the team apart) before personal/selfish reasons, it's the same reason why she came back for the final. So if she dropped that ball on purpose, all those reasons for coming back would have been for nothing, and most importantly, it would take so much away from how great she is.

The more I watch this movie, the more I see Dottie give up the win to kit. Dottie was content with her life and only went to tryouts because kit could only go if she went. She said to her grandsons let the little guy get a chance to shoot and she was very clear she didn't want to play. Plus it showed her several times get slammed at home plate and she held on to the ball, she was the best player in the league no way she would accidentally screw up in the world series what she had successfully done many times before. She ultimately gave her sister a name and an out to their little farm life that kit wasn't content with then went on her merry way.

She dropped the ball on purpose to let Kit win.. Rules of Film 101 with previous scenes and dialogue implies she dropped it on purpose. They already showed that she can take hit from a base runner and she kept saying it's just a game and winning wasn't important to her but seeing her sister be happy was. Her expression later on talking with Kit shows she dropped it on purpose.

  • @Shaggit

I think it's quite obvious she did not drop the ball on purpose. The hit was massive and it took Dottie's hand and baseball out of the glove and smacked the ground. The second time her hand hit the ground she released the grip. She was smiling at the end because she was proud of her little sister. Let's not take away Kit's victory here by saying Dottie threw the game. :-D

Personally I always thought yeah Dottie didn't want to do this at 1st but it became more important to her than she realized as time went on...she was pretty conflicted there about everything from the game and I suspect her attraction to Jimmy and that rivalry with Kit and it wasn't till here husband walked thru that door when it all became clear to her what she wanted...

    • @Shaggit
      @Shaggit 10 років тому

***** Exactly. In the beginning of the movie, she couldn't even let her little sister walk faster than her. She was clearly competitive and not at all forgiving when it came to games of any kind.
When her husband came home, she "quit" given relief at him being alive. Of course Jimmy was right in that she'd regret it for the rest of her life and so returned at the end. I never saw her relationship with Jimmy as more than friendship and respect, however.

I agree with you, AE Glasser. If Dottie had been happy, then why come back to the game? Why tell the pitcher to send high fast balls? Why did Dottie lose her cool, for the first time ever it seemed, after Kit ran third base? Kit was no slouch as a player, she pitched a shut out. And unlike Dottie, she worked hard every minute. Making Dottie seemed nicer made you feel for the original team. That had value to the story to see them lose.

    • @SashaB11910G

You are absolutely right. The whole controversy is due to the bad shot selection and the inopportune use of slow motion. If you play that moment back at regular speed (not slow-mo as in the movie) - it is obvious that Dottie’s hand hits the ground hard and the ball is knocked out of it.
Using slow motion, the director, the cinematographer and the editor all dropped the ball on this one and created the unnecessary debate.

When I was younger I was upset that Rockford lost to Racine, but I understand they were keeping up with history that Racine won the first world series in women's baseball. Kind of shocked Dottie dropped it when she was able to hold onto it when the Racine catcher ran into her in an earlier game and who's heavier than Kit.
I am glad that the team didn't blame Dottie or blast her for dropping the ball as Dottie played her ass off in the game giving the team two runs and catching that foul ball.

  • @annpino5005

Dottie never dropped balls. This was established early on. But so was the rivalry and so was Dottie's preference to quit the game and go home to Oregon with her husband. I think she simply saw an opportunity to help her sister have the glory for once, so she took it. If the play had gone some other way and Kit hadn't made home in time, Dottie would've gone with that too. She didn't decide in advance to let Kit have it, since she told the pitcher exactly how to defeat her. It was a spur of the moment decision to give her kid sister the win when the circumstances all lined up for it.

The umpire got that call wrong. The film clearly shows that the catcher had possession of the ball when she tagged the runner and only dropped the ball when her hand made contact with the ground. According to the rules of baseball, the runner should have been called out.

Michael Kopelow I'm not sure Dottie ever tags her.. Reminds me of Game 2 (I believe?) of the 1991 World Series, where Mark Lemke scored the winning run in extra innings, even though in real time he looked out by a mile.. The throw was on the 1st base side of the plate, and as the catcher turned to apply the tag, he tagged him with his elbow, and not the glove..
True story, and a great series.. Interesting note, Jack Morris ended that series by tossing a 10 inning shut out in game 7.. The last MLB pitcher to throw a 10 inning shut out.. lol..

I’ve always debated with myself about whether Dottie dropped the ball on purpose. It’s never made clear, which is what makes the film great.
My first impression, watching this as a kid, is that she dropped it on purpose. Dottie is just too good a player. They even showed earlier that she didn’t drop the ball just to prove that it’s not her thing. Plus her smile at the end is so genuine.
Later I had doubts, thinking that Dottie never liked losing... she’s very competitive, even at race walking with her sister... she even told Ellen Sue about Kit’s weakness... she’d never let her team down.
Recently I watched it again and I’m leaning towards “dropped it on purpose”. Why? It’s Jimmy Dugan’s expression after Dottie drops the ball. He knows her well, recognises that she’s the best in the league, and yet he’s also aware that Dottie’s loyalties have always been torn between the game and her personal relationships. She gave up baseball to be with Bob, so what does glory matter to her? In that instant Jimmy realises that she did it on purpose. There’s disappointment and at the same time understanding on his face.

The debate shouldn't be if Dottie intentionally dropped it. I don't think Kit actually touched home plate. If you watch in slow motion, neither foot actually touches. There's a couple split seconds where it looks like she did but her foot caught dirt. Kit's out.

Hated this ending. Dottie did it on purpose to give Kit a win and boost her confidence and independence. Dottie didn't care, she was leaving. But that selfishness on her part made Jimmy and her teammates lose when they had worked so hard to get where they were. She didn't do Kit any favors either. Kit didn't win. Obviously she was only happy and loving toward her sister when she thinks she's one upped her. Had Dottie held onto the ball? Kit would have cried, sulked, screamed and tantrumed about how Dottie is always perfect. Kit needed to learn a hard lesson about life -- there are always going to be people out there who are going to be better than you - in EVERYthing. Would Kit still be so magnanimous if Dottie told her she let her win? Doubt it.
