Some additional stuff idk: Most greenland sharks are blind, but not for the reason you think - theres actually a type of parasitic copepod that is attached to most greenland sharks eyes, blinding them. Not too much of an issue since they live in relatively deep waters. Theres also a video floating around that might show whale sharks making noise but its very sus and theres a lot of discussion around its legitimacy The smallest shark is actually a lantern shark, the dwarf lantern shark with a max length of 20 cm (thanks octonauts for teaching me this when i was like 5) Fish noises can get very loud - one of the loudest is the Danionella Cererbrum which is only 12mm long, but makes noises up to 140 decibels*, which is roughly as loud as a gunshot or firework. The Plainfin Midshipman of San Fransisco can be heard from land quite regularly too *check the 4rth comment down for more info
One weird thing is those parasites typically infect one eye. They rarely find both eyes affected. (Which makes me wonder if losing both is reducing that population...? 🤔)
be careful comparing dB underwater with dB in air. They have a different pressure reference point (20 times lower in water). And even more important: water is almost incompressible -> a sound with the same pressure amplitude has much much less energy than in air. 140dB in water are as loud as 43dB in air - that's not very loud at all.
Further theory on that first one: it's theorized that the copepod acts as a lure, but I'm not sure if we have actual evidence of this. (This makes it slightly better for me in that at least the poor shark gets a maybe benefit?)

I do the same thing as Hank here, where I often obscure my mouth as a way of telling myself to not talk over someone despite my eagerness to state something.
Excitement cant be an excuse when you constantly interrupt someone, act like you have to work extra hard to listen to someone, how is that nice and respectful, even if you are excited it doesnt give you the right to act this way.
I had the question of “what is a fish” on a university exam. My answer, if I remember correctly was a long the line of : “ A craniate animal that usually has scales, gills, and a backbone. A fish usually spends most or all of its life in water.” I got a full marks for my response.

I live in Queensland, Australia. In our local rivers we have a type of lung fish. If oxygen levels in the water are low, they can gulp air into their lungs as well as using their gills.

The Red Drum is North Carolina's state fish. Its also pretty dang big. The drums are also in a family with a fish called the Atlantic croaker, and they make a grunting or drumming noise too. Then there's grunts 😂
On the fish make sounds point, I've kept sparkling gourami (Trichopsis pumilus) in my home office aquarium and they absolutely make a lot of sounds! Mostly croaking type noises.
This is a top episode for all the reasons others have mentioned. Feel like we'll see more of Jaida in the future. Certainly hope so. That clarity, humour and enthusiasm are a spot on mix.
Wow! The level of honesty, both about the limits of own knowledge, and scientific evidence, and also the fact that things aren't always as simple as people want them to be, combined with a lot of [actual] knowledge, and understanding. And also that level of enthusiasm rarely shown by people who even has begun to understand how complicated a lot of things truly are.
Funny thing is, you can’t really base if something’s a fish with the “breathes through gills, not by lungs” way. There are fish that have lungs, namely fish like gouramis and bettas, which are labyrinth fish. They have an organ called a labyrinth that essentially functions like a lung so they can breathe air. They have this cause they natively live in murky, muddy waters, such as puddles, which don’t have much oxygen dissolved in the water. They can survive out of water so long as they keep moist.
3:50 I could be wrong, but I think that we know that fish can, with some modifications, breath air because WE exist. At some point a gill structure developed for water-breathing was also air-breathing and survived well enough to eventually ditch the water-breathing bits altogether. If there weren't gills that could work in air than land vertebrates in our form would have never happened.
My understanding of why gills don't work in air is that they sort of clump together if they aren't floating suspended in water, like how wet hair clumps together, and this drastically lowers the surface area
Love the chemistry and the presentation! I am usually not super interested in fish myself but this is certainly a great way to make any topic sound fascinating. I am in my late thirties and definitely learned/relearned some things from this.
