    I am 73 years old and I've been doing an Asian squat since I was a young child. I find it the most relaxing way to sit.

    I went to live in Thailand when I was 20 years old, and learned to squat there (also to sit in a full lotus position so I could protect my feet and lower legs from mosquito bites! Both offer natural ways of daily stretching, and have served me well. I'm 81 years old now and can still do both. Cheers!

    I've learned over the years that you should never be afraid to modify. Just move the joints and stay in the comfort zone. Don't force. I figure if I can just keep my current range of motion until I reach 100, than I will seem like a very flexible 100 year old.

    Your videos are so helped & informative. I Was trying to do squats that were too difficult for me. So glad I watched this video. Another reminder to me to stay within my limits. I'm 77 and trying to keep up with all the different exercises I should be doing.for the different parts of my body A little overwhelming at times.

    When I went in the Navy in my 20s, I couldn't do the duckwalk. They would say, "what is a matter with you?" . I didnt know. I discovered your videos a year ago at 50 and I am obsessed with perfecting my squat. No pain, I squat perfect on a hill with the slant. You made realize, the hips, heels, ankles, knees, back etc all need to be strong for a perfect squat. Like a team effort. Your doing a great service. thanks

    Practicing in a swimming pool really helps. The buoyancy lifts you up. You don’t have to struggle to get back up and you do gain from it. At least I did

I am going to be cautious after a "sprained lumbar disc" or bruising and damage by the disc from forcing a twist in an Iyengar yoga class where I ignored my body to my own detriment. The swimming pool would be a safe place to check things. As well as uphealth's very safe step by step approach

      Hi again. I tried to send you a you tube video but I couldn’t. The gist of it is this. “Take your hips with you as you do a yoga twist. Don’t twist them to the opposite side. As you go left your hips move left etc. She does not like the way many people do that twist to the opposite in Yoga. I’ll try to get the video for you.

    Thanks to you, Matt, I can now do the squat, although I can't get completely all the way down yet. I still need more leg strengthening for that final position, but I'm close! It took me about 5 months total to go from almost 0% squat (I even had a hard time getting down and up from a chair without my hands!) to my current position squat, which is about what I see ppl on UA-cam doing with a barbell, so at least thighs parallel to floor! I'm 78, so I consider that a win, even if I can't ever sit in that position.

    I've finally taken the initiative to go to physical therapy for my back. Thank you for helping me realize that❤ I probably would have been living with a bad back for a long time had I not came across this channel and realized I needed a change

    He mentioned dorsiflexion briefly. That’s what stops me from full squats without my body weight tipping me backwards. Working on my dorsiflexion.

    With arthritis in my heeps and knees I can't do it any longer, but I'm implementing baby squats while washing my teeth, cutting veggies (actually any time when possible in my kitchen) to strengthen my glutes.

    I began weight training at 15 years old. I could barely do a 35 lb barbell squat. This movement pattern with weights changed my life!

      If you are not sore after exercise, you haven't done enough to make a difference.

      @@BarryGee-pm6rv If you’re sore immediately after exercise then you’ve damaged your muscles and risk more damage by overtraining.

      @@LateForDinner-mn1hn I didn't say immediately. Immediately after exercise, you should feel fatigued. if you want to build muscular size and strength then the muscles you worked should feel sore the day after. This is due to the build-up of metabolites and micro tears in the muscle itself. It is this that stimulates repair and growth. If you want to waste your time and effort on something useless like jogging then that's your choice. No pain, no gain.

      @@LateForDinner-mn1hn So how sore is "too sore"? You should be sore and maybe very sore 24 hours after a good training session so much so that you can't train that body part every day. In general one shouldn't train every day (resistance exercise) as the muscle needs to rest, recover and grow. Aerobic exercise not so much.

    When I was younger, about 50 years ago, my knees were in terrible condition because I grou up so fast. Antil then I have fear doing squats. But I want to 😂. Maybe I'm wrong but I started squating in the water and I don't have any problems to stand up. I think the fear is only in my head and now I must work on my legs to remember what they are suppose to do😂.

    So I'm mostly bedridden with fibromyalgia, but I felt ok to go grocery shopping the other day.
    The supermarket is super annoying, prices on the shelves don't line up with the items, so besides bending over and taking photos of the products on the bottom shelves, I tried squats. Yay for muscle memory!
    I did a few, but started getting fatigued, and standing up too quickly. Then I did the hang onto the shelf exercise until the dizziness went away🤣 I'm over 60, so that was a good day for me!

    Using a kettlebell weight in front of me when I deep squat helps move my center of gravity forward enough to hold the deep squat easily. This helps me work on increasing the ankle mobility I need to get my knees forward enough to gradually move that center of gravity forward without the weight. I can move the weight into different positions as I try to work on this and it seems to be helping.

      Keep trying. And do the squat for several minutes each time you work out. Lean forward a little. It’s a real exercise in itself!

      See if this helps: sort of put your butt up without your upper body going anywhere so you are sort of bent down like you were picking something up from the floor. The weight of your upper body isn’t on your muscles as strongly. Then unfurl your upper body to upright. Hope it helps and you can use this to build up to a regular squat stand up.

    Another tip is if you get pain in the bottoms of your feet, be aware of what shoes you're squatting in, and how even the ground is under you. One time I was squatting while gardening and noticed my feet were getting so sore in the arches I could barely stand it anymore. Then I noticed the arches in the sandals I was wearing were really high, so they were pressing into the bottom of my feet. I switched out my sandals for some flatter ones and I could squat just fine in them.

    I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you for this very beneficial technique. I'm 63 and have only practised this for a couple of months but I can now reach the deep squat easily with comfort. I have to say that it has worked wonders with my persistent lower back pain and makes leg exercise like the goblin squat an absolute breeze. Although I do have a question. I can only achieve the squat with my knees wide apart and my feet splayed outwards. Is this acceptable or am I performing it incorrectly?

    Hmm. I always squatted as a kid and young adult -- it was my natural way of 'sitting.' But now in my mid 50s, my knees hurt in the last 6 inches or so to get to the real resting position. It's probably arthritis, but I hope that it is just stiffness from doing it less.

    I used to find deep squatting really comfortable. Last year I was squatting while sorting papers on the floor. I shifted to the side to move a paper, and heard a crumpling sound from my knee. I guess that I tore the meniscus. Since then, it’s not possible to sit that way anymore, as my knee doesn’t bend as far.

    What did I learn?
    I learned:
    I want a tree swing.
    I need to work on the scar tissue in my Rt ankle from ski injury
    I will be checking the hip workouts to straighten knee vegus, also on the Rt.

    I just came across your videos looking for info on the Asian squat. A good friend, who is 2 years younger than me (I'm 65) started squatting a couple of years ago and swears by it. I find that I can't get down on my own at all. However, sitting on the very edge of a low sofa helps put me in the position and I can feel it. I'm not in the fully seated position but I feel like I'm down as far as my knees will allow at this point. I try to hold the squat for 3 minutes - using my arms and my butt to take some of the weight off. My legs and butt feel like they're getting a workout when I'm done. Do you think that this approach and method are ok? Obviously, I hope to reduce the amount of help I need in the position and also increase the time in which I hold the position. Any feedback appreciated.

    Lower lumbar flexion when unloaded is ok,
    if it feels ok.

    Every time I use my hamstrings or try to do a squat, I get a migraine that lasts for several days. I have tried to stretch very carefully for several months but I still get severe migraines.

    I've always been able to squat very deeply, with maybe an inch between my behind and the floor. Its getting back up again, now that I'm older, that's the problem!

    I can do deep squats but if I try to staying down in a rest position my muscles above my knee tighten up after 1:30 seconds. Any tips to help me stay down longer.

    outside of obesity or some disability no one should have issues squatting. it's one of the most natural movements we can make.

      @@TheL0wner body proportions can definitely affect the ease of squatting. In particular, long femurs and a relatively shorter torso make it far more difficult than for someone with shorter femurs. It’s physics and anatomy.

    A deep squat is my goal but I’m not sure if it’s in the cards for me. I’m pretty close to a full deep squat but there’s a feeling that’s there’s a ball behind my right knee (osteoarthritis in both knees) which keeps me from a complete squat. Any advice other than what you mentioned in this video?

    The only pain I get is at the ball joint of the hip on one side and I don't suppose that is a good sign.

    My major problem is when I get into a deep squat, I fall backwards. I can deep squat if a wall is directly behind me or I can grab something in front of me. Help! I’ve not seen or heard anyone address this condition. A deep squat in the middle of a room is one of my goals for 2024.

      You have long femurs I’m guessing? Widen your stance and point toes out a bit.

    I can squat BUT I have a hiatus hernia and it can very painful with any food in the stomach. Legs are fine back is fine but I am 75. Being thin helps, there are few Asians who are fat and squat.

    My knee ligaments have taken a beating over the years, and I am currently doing knee strengthening exercises. If I overdo it, I now get pain down my shins afterwards. Is this something new or is it just an aspect of knee pain?

      My understanding is that it should be whatever position is comfortable, toe-direction-wise, because of the anatomy of your hips/pelvis.

    I could recently do a deep squat but learned that maybe I shouldn’t because of S-I joint going out frequently. Then suddenly I got arthritis pain and stiffness in that area. Will I ever be able to squat again?

    If you are recovering your SI joint after stress or injury and want to stabilize it - maybe don’t deep squat for a few months. You don’t need mobility right when you already have too loose ligaments.

    Did you go back to playing hockey as a goalie? One of my goals is to do so. Or did you classify this as a sport/position that is not for your body type?

      I did go back in my late 20s after years of working on my hips. Played until I turned 36 and retired from mens league because I was tired of hotheads firing pucks at my face, spearing when covering up a puck, and the general drama.
      It was also a huge time investment that then took away from the amount of time and energy for properly training my body (traffic getting there, suiting up, hanging up gear post-game to dry, etc. etc.). And playing goalie (like any sport) requires training to maintain good muscle balance. I needed a better stress reliever and coudln't see myself investing so much time in the sport with a baby on the way at the time. No longer made sense in my life....Moved on to surfing. No regrets.
      I still fondly remember many saves over the decades...but the love affair with the position is gone....at least for now 😅
      I recently took up roller hockey as a skater in a casual pickup game. No drama. Nobody keeping stats. Nobody trying to win some meaningless championship. Just good times. 🤙

    Don't listen to this nonsense. The advice given here is the counsel of defeat. This advice will put you in a zimmer frame. If it hurts to squat it means you need to squat some more. Squat in progressive stages, a bit more each day until you can attain a full squat without discomfort. Then practice so you don't lose your gains.

      @@misottovoce I'm 76 and can do full, deep squats with no problem. If you got off your fat arse and trained, you might be able to do squats as well.
