This is a rare treat for us here at Mikesunboxing, a very high end performance motherboard, this is on loan to us from the legend that is @Colin Hilton, he was upgrading his PC to celebrate his 80th Birthday, And I offered to build it for him.
So the Parts list is very nice, and the platform is the MSI Z790 Carbon WiFi.
This has an amazing 19+1+1 VRM setup each with 105A chokes, this gives an immense amount of potential power on tap.
We have PCIe Gen5 GPU and M.2 ports and masses of heatsinks and cooling
Overall a great board with a lot of potential.
Hope Colin has many trouble free years out of this platform

Lovely board! Wish I had the need for something like this. Colin giving us all dream setup envy! :D
yeah i agree, damn fine board
This is a great board....well it HAS to be, its an MSI one ! This one looks amazing, thanks to the legend Colin Hilton for letting you play with it for a while. 🙂
it is a beast of a board, so heavy and well constructed, hope it gives Colin many years of trouble free use
Lovely looking board and looks like it has great potential for upgrades.
I think so too!
great board
Thinking of buying this for my 12900K, I'm coming from a Z590 Unify 11900K...solid review man thanks.
thanks appreciate it
I love MSI motherboards. Never gave me an issue..... from the z390 ones of 9th Gen to the B550 Tomahawk (legend) .. and nice bios too. cheers Mike
Same. Used to be an asus fanboy till they became overpriced and mid with all the controversy so I got a b550 tomahawk to replace my faulty (?) ASUS crosshair x470 and it’s been great ever since
MSI i feel are leading the way with motherboards in the last few generations. mostly good prices and good features and reasonable RMA rates
@@mikesunboxing 100%. Sometimes their stuff has been hit and miss but for me anyway I’ve had a great experience. I did have to rma a monitor after nearly 2 years due to some (minor ish) lines at the bottom but that got sorted quickly
Amazing motherboard with so much built in m.2s vrms, connectivity. But then its a Carbon and top flight. Only one question having had Asus mb which shared pcie lanes with m.2, it halved my gpu so surely gen5 or 4 it wud do same! Thanks for review Mike and Kath 🐈👍
that is the benefit of the higher tier chipset, more PCIe lanes and less sharing
@@mikesunboxingthe chipset lanes are like that on all z790 boards. The issue has nothing to do with the board. It’s a 14th gen intel processor restriction on the CPU lanes. If you use the gen5 m.2 slot you will get 8/8. If you’re using a gen4 m.2 then you still get 8 but don’t use 4 lanes. This is like this on ALL. You can use 13gen or go AMD to avoid.
While they look great, integrated m.2 heatsinks are a pita when you want to upgrade a drive and don't want to dissasemble all the PC.. Especially those that are integrated with the chipset cooler.. But nice board for sure!
yeah the built in ones do suck at times, especially the ones that have a single shield for multiple drives
High end MSI MB. in the future i hope for me. on MSI Z590 😀
got another new socket coming for intels next gen LGA1851
@@mikesunboxingI'm to old to keep up or care about this new hype called. next gen 😛
I bought the "MPG Carbon z790 Wifi II" and am having hell figuring out the difference other than the wifi 6/7 on my board v.s. this one... Do they install the same? I'm looking for some build guides but there's nothing for the v.2 of this board. Is it safe to assume everything is the same short of software and BIOS updates/installs(etc...)?
yeah i think it is more of a product evolution with a few minor tweaks
With the competition between the operating platform software and hardware it seems like new hardware is constantly on the horizon to change the way we work and function in society. The latest intel processors have come to the limits of efficiency. Z790 motherboards are so last year. in a few years it is possible that silicon may not be the computing backbone for humanity. So your current build is rapidly looking like an old legacy contraption destined for the recycling center in as little as 6 months.
i will save this comment and look back at it in 6 months to see the outcome. I hope you are wrong
Very like the Unify-x but with two too many RAM slots.
yes that is true. Not seen many unify boards these days
Not a bad board Mike but very pricey!
it is very much a luxury purchase here by mr hilton
Hi Mike! I am looking forward to buy this MOBO but version 2 or II the MSI MPG Z790 CARBON WIFI II and Wanted to ask your thoughts on the build I am thinking of.
GPU PNY GeForce RTX 4080 SUPER 16GB VERTO O
PSU MSI MPG A850G
CPU I7-14700k
SAMSUNG SSD 990 PRO 2TB, PCIe 4.0 M.2 2280
RAM G.SKILL Trident Z5 RGB Series 32GB (2 x 16GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 7200 (PC5 57600)
Idk wich Cooler system and Case.
Please let me know what you thing of this build or if you have any recomendation.
Thank you!!!!
sounds like a great build, maybe use a lianli 216 case and a decent 360 AIO cooler in there and that should be a great setup
Hi Mike, great video as always!
I found myself watching alot of your videos recently from usb switchers to capture cards, also motherboards.. and its finally time to subscribe! lol
I bought a 14900k and an msi z790 gaming plus wifi motherboard and it works great but my friend is very skeptical of it because of the 14+1+1 VRMs.
I was wondering after you had time to try out your 13900k with that motherboard, how did you find it?
It's hard to find much information on how good your VRMs should be for the higher end chips.
thanks for the sub! and i am actually using the 13900k with the z790 gaming plus and it has been great, no issues at all and also none of the weird things that people are talking about in the media with crashes and needing to change all the intel default values.
Hi, Mike. This is a beautiful looking mobo. But it demonstrates why I haven't upgraded to Gen 5. You have to spend a minimum of $400 to get a Gen 5 mobo with a digital post code. Also, this board doesn't have enough PCIe ports for my needs and the I/O needs more USB ports. I still don't own anything that uses USB Type c ports so they'd be a waste as well as the Wi-fi. Oh, and it's an Intel board. Deal breaker.
USB C is having a slow take up rate, much slower than i expected to be honest.
Surprised to find that it actually only has pwm on cpu fan and pump fan headers, the rest are dc headers
They are all pwm and dc headers
Great review and made me order one...Just picked up an open boxed one for £227 which included a 15% discount!!! of Ebay via eBuyer. Paired with a 13700K and some G-Skill DDR 5 6800 ram with a slight undervolt to 1.245v and it is flying. Temps with CineBench R23 max out at 89 Degrees with a 360 AIO and a multi score of a fraction over 30K...Idles at around 31 to 34 Degrees. Not sure if I need the contact frame but ordered the cheap and cheerful Thermalright one. One question, it is on the original BIOS MS-7D89 and though all seems to be great, should I update to the latest bios?
it is works i would maybe consider it, but only for the security aspects with all the recently found areas of weakness
i would update, but i am a bit security paranoid
@@mikesunboxing Thanks Mike, did the bios update and no issues (always scarry!!!)....
@@vMaxHeadroom Glad to hear that 🙂
I considered this board for quite a while! But then I told myself: Self (old joke 🙄), you no longer make money with your hobby, so let's be reasonable. And I got the ASUS Z690. Heck, I wasn't even considering moving over to DDR5. 🙂
this is definitely a luxury purchase
This vs. Auros Elite X and Auros Pro X? I'm a newbie.
not tried the others but the z790 boards will all be very similar overall
@@mikesunboxing Thank you. Is the MSI Z790 Carbon Wifi II just the newest version of the one featured in this video?
Idc if they improved ( and they did) i will never buy another MSI product in my life o k maybe if they are only PC parts brand in the world.
never deal in absolutes, that is the path to the dark side of the force
@@mikesunboxing you never had an expensive PC part fail my friend, and MSI did NOT refund
I thought this only supported 12 and 13gen not 14
yes it supports all 3 generations
No more boards for me Mike, I’m fine with what I have!
Except for absolute hard drive fetishists (5x M2 + 6x SATA), I don't really see any application scenario for this motherboard 🤔
i think most people can get by with 3 or 4 m.2 drives, but the ability at add more is welcome
