  • Congratulations, you bought your brand new AMD Zen 4 processor, perhaps this Ryzen 7 7700X for just over 300, or the Ryzen 7 3D for about 350, or the full fat Ryzen 9 for about 550. But which motherboard would logically go with your new processor? Leo has three AMD motherboards here from MSI, which will show you a huge range of options and prices.

    Nice review!
    The 2 670e boards really only makes sense functionally if you need to run 2 GPUs and have a high-speed PCI express slot in reserve for future expansion like video capture cards.
    Both of these lack thunderbolt functionality (no built-in, no headers). Comparably priced gigabyte and asus models offer this.

    There is 1 minor issue of X670E Carbon:
    At the end of the Primary M.2 slot (near the AM5 socket), there is a knob protruding upward which will cause some NVME getting stuck when you want to take them out. You have to wiggle and pull up intensively in order to take the NVME out.

    Choose the Carbon. 4 M.2 -2 Gen5 2 Gen4. No desire to install a gen5 drive but it should get everything out of a gen4 drive (2 SK Hynix P41 2tb). The Carbon was one of the few boards that populating all the M.2 slots did not steal bandwidth from the PCIe slots

      There is something here that don't add up. Any AMD 7000 series CPU have 24 PCIe gen5 lanes. If 16 of this is used for a GPU and 4 of them is used for thunderbolt or USB4 support or what not, how can it possibly run 2x M.2 gen5 x4? That sums up to 28 lanes+ the 4 lanes going to the chipset. With 2 gen5 M.2, it must cut the bandwith in half for the PCIe slot or for the M.2's. If it cuts the bandwith for the M.2's to gen5 x2, then a gen4 drive would have around gen3 speed.

    Any reason for the B650 to be running the CPU that much hotter at a lower frequency? Looking at the hwinfo, it was only at 60%ish of it's power limits, whereas the others were up in the 80-90s. Possible a bad cooler mount?

    A Leo video, yes! A great overview. Very clear and well-presented.
    Given that you were looking at a £700+ motherboard, I’m disappointed that you didn’t compare it to a Threadripper motherboard. Or don’t MSI make one?
    I would also like to see you pay more attention to internal expansion . For instance, could you place a 10 Gb Ethernet or a capture card - or both - alongside a large GPU (e.g. a 4090) on those boards? Will the M.2 drives get hot underneath a big GPU? I actually chose an Asus X670E motherboard because I could run a big GPU like my 4090 and also a 10 Gb Ethernet card. (It actually hosts my A770 right now.)

    • @KitGuruTech

    It's going to be interesting when the 'updated' x670 (x870) motherboards start to appear (in time for Zen5 release). While Zen5 will function aok in most/all current AM5 MB's, what new functionality will be incorporated to justify the x870 R&D? Anyone who has bought the expensive MSI MEG x670e ACE, for example, will probably be a bit p#d off if significant new features are added to the x870 equivalent.

  • @The_Bo
    @The_Bo Місяць тому

    Interesting! what is the relation between VRM and cooling? I mean, It's totally understandable that better VRM means more & better juice to the CPU which can push further, still this should also be directly correleted in lower temp. If the CPU is consuming less power (less joule effect) and the CPU cooler is the same, why they are all reaching 95°C thermal cap? 😕

    • @KitGuruTech
      @KitGuruTech  Місяць тому

      AMD Zen 4 pushes the CPU to use the available resources in a triangle of power-heat-performance. In essence if you improve cooling you won't see a temperature drop but will see a slight boost in performance.

    The issue with the M.2 expander on the high end board is that people spending that money are likely to have a 3+ slot GPU that renders the 2nd PCIe slot unusable with the current comedy GPU sizing. Unless you could house it in the 3rd PCIe, which looks very tight given the amount of connections that will be plugged in at the bottom there, then it becomes unusable for many.

    • @ChrisM541
      @ChrisM541 Місяць тому +1

      The expander card in the 3rd (gen5 x4) slot would restrict you to only one SSD (each M.2 SSD uses 4 physical lanes). That bottom gen5 x4 slot, however, is equivalent in speed to a gen4 x8 slot or a gen3 x16. Currently, no GPU maxes this out, so providing it fits in the case etc, you could put your GPU in the 3rd slot and free up 16 gen5 lanes spread across the 1st 2 slots (16/0 or 8/8) e.g. two expander cards to add 4 more gen5 SSD's.

    • @moonstomper68
      @moonstomper68 Місяць тому +1

      @@ChrisM541 I can't imagine any GPU today fitting in the bottom slot without being low profile, but the second yes that could be doable and the first slot could then hold the expander as you say.

    I don't get why there are so many chipset. A620 for budget but should have better VRM than existing models, B650E for everyone else. X670E might make sense for professional use, but then you could also just get a Threadripper if you really need a lot of PCIe lanes. X670 is just weird and B650 does not really offer much more than A620. Overclocking? Try overclocking modern AMD CPU's, it does not make sense. At most you want to lower voltage curve, cool them well and use low latency memory.
    Example: Asus B650E-E cost less than the X670E middle model MSI:
    - 8-layer PCB
    - 16+2+1 70A total overkill already
    - PCIe 5.0 X16 slot for GPU and two other slower slots if you ever really need them.
    - 2x gen5 M.2 + 2x gen4 M.2
    - error code display
    So with B650E chipset you get PCIe 5.0 and gen5 M.2 for future unlike with B650 non-E, and a better board for less money than with X670.

      Very debatable, boils down to if you believe PCIe5 will be relevant in the next 5 years. A 4090 is only "just" maxing out PCIe 3.0 now but you can absolutely get away with it. PCI 4.0 will be fine for at least the next two GPU generations, by which time you may want to move to the next new Intel or AMD socket anyway. The extra money spent on a X670 over B650 perhaps better used elsewhere.

      Same. I hear bad things, but I have never had an issue with any Gigabyte products or Asrock for that matter. Never owned an MSI product. Ive actually had the most issues with Asus products.

      @rickgear2579 Yeah, my local microcenter pushes asus hard, but they have the most returns on them, so go figure. Tons of prime and tuf boards.

      Yeah my last two ASUS boards failed. Have an MSI ace and it’s been great. Almost went with Asrock board but I heard poor things about RMA

    MSI on a marketing push to distract from their awful Claw, I suspect.

      lol quite a stretch. They have been making motherboards for quite a long time.

    Clearly no MSI, their motherboards are killing m2 ssd... and their customer support sucks

      You do realise this is in the title? its a look at three MSI motherboards? How can you miss the title of the video and then take time to write that out?

    • @LifeIsButaBluff
      @LifeIsButaBluff Місяць тому

      I thought the title was “which to buy?” Came across as an extended MSI advert more than anything else., the m/b being not the only MSI items mentioned

      @@LifeIsButaBluff Its a showcase video, we toggled on the paid for content button at start to show this. Its not a review - its a showcase highlighting features, I/O, board layout, ports, product support and overall what you get for your money. It is not a review of each board and there is no indepth testing - correct.
      If we get time we will review some more motherboards - but each board takes weeks to analyse to the level we would be happy publishing as a full on 'review' video.
      While not a full review, we do show features in this video for the three boards, differentiating features, between three price points. Some people have found it useful based on comments, but if you want an indepth analysis of MSI, Gigabyte, ASUS and ASROCK boards - then yes, this video is not for you.
