  • One of the coolest things about star wars is just how many call star ships there are. But do we actually know how big the largest ones are? Well we're going to take a look at the biggest of the biggest star ships starting with the millennium falcon, to the imperial class star destroyer all the way to the death star and we'll compare to things in our real physical world.

    Do Imperial forces ever live long enough to retire? Might explain why Vader was force choking anyone who made a mistake... saves the empire money on retirement plans.

      Officer: Whew... last day on the job.
      Darth Vader outside the door force pulls the shoelace on the officer's left boot... then walks in.
      Darth Vader: Your boot is not properly laced... your behavior is unbecoming an Imperial Officer *Force chokes*
      Officer: You... ass...hooo *CRACK*
      Darth Vader: *Turns to rest of the crew* Let this be a learning experience. I will tolerate only excellence in my Death Squadron.

      On CeasarIII you shouldn't set population health too high. Else too many survive to senior citizen status and they then drag on the economy without contributing to the workforce.

    it's really weird that bridge gone = ship taken out. It's stupid to have all these important systems relying on the command bridge to operate, without secondary/tertiary systems in case of bridge failures. Also why is the bridge always so exposed? why not put it in the middle of the ship and cover the ships entire hull with massive amounts of well protected camera's etc. You could create the exact same same view, and actually probably a much broader view (360° and different viewpoints etc). Definitely from a military standpoint this doesn't make any sense. Are these ship designers morons or something?

    • @clintoncook6082
      @clintoncook6082 7 років тому +42

      He neglects to point out that, a few seconds before, a couple of A-Wings take out the Executor's deflector shield (which were probably pounded quite a bit by that point), leaving the bridge exposed.

    • @MDP1702
      @MDP1702 7 років тому +53

      right, but from a military vessel design standpoint, you take into account the possibility that the shields fails, hull gets damaged, ... and take precautions to make sure the vessel is active and operational for as long as possible. Having a bridge out in the the open has no real advantage other than the view, which can also be acquired and even greatly improve with camera's and such. Also just design wise, you bottleneck all communication and traffic to and from the bridge through one point, while when in the middle it can just be spread out.
      Really from a technological and design purpose a bridge built like this only has disadvantages, yet nearly every ship we see in star wars has this kind of exposed bridge type.

    • @ajcox6549
      @ajcox6549 7 років тому +36

      There had to have been extensive damage to the Executor before the bridge was hit. Those ships are built with secondary command decks deeper in the super-structure for that exact reason so that the ship can keep fighting after loosing the main bridge.

    • @pofeed
      @pofeed 7 років тому +55

      It's explained a little better in novelizations/books written specifically to explain things. If I remember correctly, there was supposed to be a second bridge somewhere else(like a battle bridge) but the ship got caught in the gravity well of the Death Star before the second bridge could take over and deal with navigation/engines etc. It's not a super good explanation and tbh it's pretty contrived. But this is star wars, gotta have some suspension of disbelief :)

    • @MDP1702
      @MDP1702 7 років тому +9

      that would make a lot more sense. Even (temporarly) automatisation to directly take over should be an option though when there are no signals send anymore from a command post.
      But yeah star wars needs suspense and it probably would need a lot of work implementing these kind of things for negative result concerning suspence/plot lines.

      compaired to Earths moon Lunar then yes the Death Star is tiny, Lunar is almost 35 times the diameter of the First Death Star but at the quoted size of 100 miles diameter that means it has a larger diameter than many moons and even some minor "dwarf" planets in the solar system.

      In rogue one there is a star destroyer knocked down onto Scariff. It wipes out a shield generator and blow up in the processs. I should point out that a starship of that size moving at that velocity would have an equally devastating effect to what the death star did. The crater would be hundreds of miles wide and all life on the planet would be destroyed.

    4:20 I do believe it took the Two hours to reach the core, it's just that, for the sake of the movie, they cut that bit out: and we just get to see the Emperor falling for five seconds and then exploding. I understand that Luke and his father took the tram to a McDonald's during this time and watched a short 90 minute movie. In the Blu-ray addition of the force awakens, they were supposed put that bit back in The extras section. But the piece was so long that the Blu-ray started to bleed into the red Spectrum and they had to cut it out again.

    • @thatweirddoctor
      @thatweirddoctor 7 років тому +2

      There actually is a star wars counterpart to our conventional weaponry called 'slugthrowers'. Since lightsabers are basically heat and light trapped in a magnetic field that can melt through steel and other metals, bullets would be no issue. Though a machine gun could most definitely kill a Jedi or Sith, due to the rate of fire.

      Executor is a word it is the person who executes a deceased persons estate during probate as well as a Programming term. But only the later one is sometimes said like to execute a person as it executes a program or function in programming terms & not like the former.
      But I think the name is fine & it makes sense however it's said. I also argue that if someone is wanting to be a linguistic innovator Executor is a good past tense of execution as in "Fred was the executor of the programme code"

    Actually the Executor was not taken out just by it's bridge being hit. In legends and books it talks about how one rebel pilot was a female imperial defector who had worked on the Executor previously. She saw it at Endor and knew that even if they hit the bridge there was a back up bridge deep in the heart of the ship. So she and a few other Pilots started shooting at her engines under the back end. This was enough along with the bridge explosion to bring down the Executor. with it's deflector shields and engines destroyed and the Death Star pulling it in with gravity nothing could stop it from falling into the second Death Star.
    Please write back.

    And I must say that was really informative. It makes me wonder if they should consider scaling down the sizes of vessels, especially if it took the Emperor two hours to reach the core!! That fact alone could play well into a theory that surely the Emperor could have regained self-control within two hours and thus may have evaded dying. Not a major hole in the Star Wars story line but one must be addressed depending upon the degree of accuracy the Writers/directors/producers wish to achieve.

And in a normal military station there are civilians employed. Technicians, Traders, cleaning staff etc. I believe the rebel alliance are no way better then the Empire.
    What kind of shitty Empire is that by the way??? They have 25k of that badass ships and as soon the Emperor is dead they say nope, #NotMyEmperor? Isnt there a successor???
    Well done Rebels, now the galaxy is in total chaos, well done.

    • @christianhoffmann8252
      @christianhoffmann8252 3 роки тому

      Two times the diameter means eight time the volume. Why would one build a bigger death star? The first one worked just fine. Even going from 160 to 200km means using twice as much material. Just pick the small version and get some hundreds of super star destroyers. If you move the bride to a less exposed position (cameras and monitors instead of windows?) and add backup systems they are way more useful than a death star anyway.

      So, about 2,200 SSD's were created, and the Imperium's battlefleet consists of mighty Apocalypse class Battleships, with its Nova Cannon (not broadside) and lance batteries (also not broadside) is is capable of reducing all but the mightiest of capital ships to rubble within minutes, and also, ramming speed, imagine the force of a 12 kilometer vessel moving at ramming speed and crashing into the side of one of the SSD's, the damage would be Catastrophic.

    Why the hell are they so big? Why is the death star a sphere? Why isn't it a death rod? Massive gun with a propulsion system would suffice. Anyway. Consider that the 1st version was big enough to destroy a planet. Why did they go for a 5 times (in diameter, 125 times in volume!!!) bigger death star? The material of a half done Version 2 death star would have been enough for 62 and a half original sized death star!!! Why not build a fleet of many cruisers and such to escort a main weapon? Like they do IRL with aircraft carriers. See "carrier battle group" at Wikipedia.
    It is very easy to write down big numbers and to stand in awe in front of that big structures. Like a multi-player masturbation. There is no talent in stating bigger and bigger numbers.
    Don't misinterpret me. I like Star Wars most of the time. I just can't stand bigger and bigger and bigger weapons as a "story". Like Star Wars 7. There is no point in anything bigger than the original death star.

    • @TheEvilmooseofdoom
      @TheEvilmooseofdoom 7 років тому +3

      The next thing has always got to be bigger and badder... It's actually quite ridiculous. The Empire at it's height built a 100 mile DS, then as things went bad and the Rebellion grew in strength they were able to build one 5x bigger. Destroy the empire and the power that rises from the ashes builds a super weapon 20x bigger yet. I think beating the bad guys is the WORSE thing you can do, they come back bigger and badder each time. I say next time let them win.

    About the super star destroyer: First, you have to take out the shield generators, which takes dozens of fighters fighting and dying over time before they do so. Then, you have to kamakazi directly into the bridge with a whole fighter. Then what do you get for that? A few seconds of the ship veering off course maybe, until another area resumes command functions. But - IF - you happen to have a massive moon-sized object right next to it, and it happens to veer in the right direction, then it could hit it. That's a lot different than saying, "oh you just take out the bridge and the whole thing is destroyed".

    Thanks for letting me know what Vader's ship was named. I always thought his ship was beautiful.

    I always felt that the estimated sizes and given sizes in the films never really matched up. As in, its calculated to be huge but its like medium in the film

    The funny thing is that when I first stood in front of a "modern fighting jet" I was seriously surprised on how big the machine actually is and that a thing that massive can be so fast and more or less agile. Oo

    Considering the size of the second Death Star does anyone else think it was bullshit that the Empire got it (mostly) built so quickly after the first one got blown up? Also, I always thought it was lazy writing to have a second Death Star. They couldn't think of something new? Was the board meeting like "Anyone have any ideas for a new threat from the Empire? No? How about just another Death Star? It worked before. Yeah? Ok? Alright, a second Death Star it is!"

    Heh! I actually sat in the pilot's seat of the Millennium Falcon! I worked pretty close to the studios where much of the film was shot, and a friend worked there, he showed us round. It was a WOW day. Met R2 and C3PO ( uninhabited at the time) and all sorts of other goodies.

    Hold on pilgrim, the hit to the bridge was backed up by heavily damaged engines most likely. No engines no propulsion
