- November 27 marked the 177th anniversary of the Medal of the Immaculate Conception, popularly known by Catholics the world over as the Miraculous Medal. The Miraculous Medal has a special place in the hearts of the Marians of the Immaculate Conception, since it paved the way for the Church's official declaration of the dogma in 1854.
The medal is striking because Our Lady herself presented the familiar design.
The front of the medal depicts Mary standing on a globe, with the head of a serpent beneath her feet. Circling the oval-shaped medal is the signature, "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee." On the reverse, twelve stars surround a large "M," from which a cross arises. Below the "M," the medal depicts two flaming hearts. The left heart, circled with thorns, represents Jesus. The right heart, pierced by a sword, symbolizes Mary.
An Unlikely Helper
The extraordinary story begins on the night of July 18, 1830, when a mysterious child awakens Sister Catherine Laboure. The child leads her to the convent's chapel. There, Sister Catherine sees the Virgin Mary, sitting in a chair. She kneels beside Mary, and rests her hands in the Virgin's lap. The two speak for several hours. During the conversation, Mary promises she will return and give the young nun "a mission." The child leads Catherine back to her bed. Catherine hears the clock strike 2 a.m., July 19.
A little more than four months later, Sister Catherine learns what Mary wants.
During her evening meditation on Nov. 27, 1830, Catherine has a vision of Mary standing in a position similar to the depiction on the medal. Later, the vision changes to include the inscription found on the front side of the medal.
Mary speaks to Catherine, saying, "Have a medal struck upon this model. Those who wear it will receive great graces, especially if they wear it around their neck."
Iconic Attraction
It was as Mary said. The medal's effects were immediate.
The first medals were made in 1832 and distributed throughout Paris. According to the Association of the Miraculous Medal, the blessings that Mary promised "began to shower down" on wearers of the medal. The devotion spread rapidly. In 1836, a Church investigation declared the apparitions to be genuine.
Since Mary asked Catherine to have the medal struck, devotion to the Miraculous Medal has spread the world over, the image having achieved iconic stature.
But what does the medal mean? In answering that, one discovers why it works.
The Front Side
• Mary stands on a globe, crushing a serpent beneath her feet. Describing the original vision, Catherine said the Blessed Mother appeared radiant as a sunrise, "in all her perfect beauty."
• Rays shoot out from Mary's hands, which she told Catherine, "... symbolize the graces I shed upon those who ask for them."
• Words from the vision form an oval frame around Mary: "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee."
Seen as a matrix, the elements of the front design encapsulate major Marian tenets:

• Assumed into Heaven She stands on the globe
• Mediatrix Rays from her hands symbolizing "graces"
• Our Protection Crushes the serpent (Gn. 3:15)
The Reverse Side
• A cross-and-bar surmounts a large, bold "M"
• 12 stars disperse around the perimeter
• Two hearts are depicted underneath the "M," the left lapped with a crown of thorns, the right skewed by a sword. From each, a flame emanates from the top. Again, employing a grid analysis, we can see how the reverse-side design contains great symbolism reflecting major tenets of the Catholic faith.
Design Element and its Catholic Meaning
• The large letter "M" - Mary as Mother, Mediatrix.
• Cross and bar - Jesus' cross of Redemption.
• 12 stars - 12 Apostles, who formed the first Church.
• Left Heart - The Sacred Heart, who died for our sins.
• Right Heart - The Immaculate Heart, who intercedes for us.
• Flames - The burning love Jesus and Mary have for us.
The Association of the Miraculous Medal, in Perryville, Mo., notes that there is no superstition or magic connected with the Miraculous Medal, nor is it "a good luck charm." Rather, it is "a testimony to faith and the power of trusting prayer. Its greatest miracles are those of patience, forgiveness, repentance, and faith."

I am very pleased to see such an interest in this video. Its origin is that 30 years ago when we asked our Parish Priest, in Howth, Dublin, the late Fr Brian Kelly, to enroll;l our children in the Miraculous Medal he asked me to produce a slide show to show to parishioners who might be encouraged to do likewise. When my grandmother died, I was sad. More sad than I ever was. I was walking and praying and asking for some kind of comfort. While walking I saw something shining. Thinking it was a dime,I picked it up and cleaned the dirt. It was a miraculous medal.i couldn't believe it. I read the statement, oh Mary conceived without sin,pray for us who have recourse to thee. I kept it on me and it gave me great comfort.

Never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help or sought your intercession, was left unaided. I can't even count the times Mary has proved that she has answered this line from the Memorare and answered my pleas in situations that I believed were impossible. God has Blessed her I thank God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit.

i live in southern California, last year the lilac fire threatened my home, my whole life I had trouble with the dogma of the immaculate conception, when we had to flee our home I put holy water throughout the house and a miraculous medal over the door and asked our lady under the title of the immaculate conception to protect our home. having to flee 50 miles away to find shelter the fire stopped spreading and the firefighters won the day. since then I have devotion to our lady the immaculata. even this year finding myself in another situation of being without a home I placed onced again in care of mary, she delivered from Jesus our lord. aman, immaculata pray for us
I have a friend who lives in Simi Valley. For her last birthday in August, I sent her two blessed Miraculous Medals, one for her, and one for her sister. She said that the neighborhood next to theirs had to evacuate, but theirs didn't. She said the medals saved them. They only had a lot of smoke, their internet and phones went out, but they still had electricity. I've been giving a lot of medals out lately to friends who are going through trying times, mostly illnesses like cancer. One is in remission so far.

Glory to God and His Holy Mother. I wore this Holy medal since I was a child up to the present day. Throughout my life the Blessed Virgin Mary saved me from many accidents and close calls including two airplane crashes, a forced landing, an engine failure on takeoff and a near miss while flying during the night hours. I’m a traditional Roman Catholic, but my husband isn’t. A dear elderly woman who is also a traditional Roman Catholic (and goes to the same Church....or parish as I do) told me to put a green scapular and a blessed miraculous medal on my husband’s side of the bed (or hide it on his side if necessary) and pray the prayer on the miraculous medal and green scapular for his conversation. I don’t know if this will help you with your sons and lost family, but I thought I’d share the info with you in hope.

2. No verse in the Scripture speaks of an "immaculate conception". This is a theory, devellopped in the 12th century and made a dogma in 1854 by Pius IX. This pope said that everyone who should dare to doubt in this "truth of faith, revealed by God" (!) would be anathema, that means: excommunicated. Famous teachers of the church as Bernhard of Clairvaux and Thomas of Aquino, who spoke against this theory, must today be considered
as heretics, condemned to hell. So I feel myself in good company. This was only one of many reasons that lead me to the consequence to leave this church after 60 years. Today I am a happy protestant - free of all the false doctrines of the Roman church. I thank God that he opened my eyes for the true gospel of Christ and the sound teaching of the apostles.

THE ROSARY AND THE MIRACULOUS MEDAL PRAYER CONNECTION - Oct 13, 2012
I wish to share an observation I made years ago while reciting the rosary during a First Friday evening devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. For some reason I was prompted to count the number of letters in the Miraculous Medal Prayer. At first I used the digits on my hands and came up with two different answers. Something told me to use the Rosary beads instead. The result was that there are 54 letters--the same as the number of beads in the main body of the Rosary, fifty Hail Marys and four Our Fathers. A few years ago at Easter, I was thinking about the apparition and realized that the Blessed Virgin was most likely speaking to Saint Catherine in French. I looked up the inscription in French, and it also contains 54 letters. Since then, when I finish each decade, I recite the Miraculous Medal Prayer along with the others.
THE ROSARY AND THE MIRACULOUS MEDAL PRAYER
ENGLISH--
"O MARY CONCEIVED WITHOUT SIN PRAY FOR US WHO HAVE RECOURSE TO THEE"
FRENCH--
"O MARIE CONCUE SANS PECHE PRIEZ POUR NOUS QUI AVONS RECOURS A VOUS"
54 letters in the Miraculous Medal Prayer in both languages. Exactly the number of beads in the main body of the Rosary--4 Our Fathers and 50 Hail Marys.
I sent this to the Central Association of the Miraculous Medal and received this reply.
Thank you Laddie. Quite an interesting observation, especially in light of another fact. The year 1954 was observed as a Marian Year in honor of Our Blessed Mother.

interesting, Ive been a Catholic all my life, but I have wavered many times. I have seen this video before but I guess its like learning new all over again. I really never connected the apparitions of St. Bernadette, with the vision of St, Catherine Laboure. But now that Im a bit older it seems even more so now then ever before, Im learning a lot more and If that was the plan with the Blessed mother with connecting the medal and "Oh Mary, conceived with out sin" to "I am the immaculate conception" that is just beyond incredible and Brings a smile to my face to think about that.
1.Mary does not appear. With sending his son and with the death of the last apostle God's relevation is finished.

The catholic church teaches this but Mary IS not the immaculate conception. Although English is not my mothertongue I feel that this is grammaticaly nonsense.

My mother went on many Catholic Shrine Pilgrimages during her later years. Her two favorites were 1. Lourdes. 2. Rue du Bac
I dumped this medal in the bin when I started to read the Bible... 1 Timothy 2:5 says there is one mediator between God and man. Jesus Christ... Not two, just one! Acts 4:12 says there is no other name under heaven given among men that you can call upon in order to be saved. Only Jesus Christ... Mary only gave one Command in the NT. Do what He tell you! God the Father said, Hear Him! Mary also needed a Saviour Luke 1:47... You would do well to yeild to the Bible. Not the spurious teachings of the Catholic Church. I was once a victim of their heresy

I don't believe in the Creation of the world, the special creation of Man, the 'Fall', Redemption, Incarnation, Salvation, Damnation, Resurrection of the body or any of the Jewish/Christian myths.
I still have a Miraculous Medal and I would never throw it in a bin out of respect for my parents who were devout Catholics.

Beautiful video. I wear the medal of the Immaculate Conception, aka "the Miraculous Medal." I was blessed to be able to make a pilgrimage to the Rue du Bac in Paris where Our Lady appeared to St. Catherine Laboure . That saint's body is now preserved incorrupt and can be seen beneath one of the altars there. "O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee."

I bought the one I currently wear at the Rue du Bac shrine giftshop in Paris. I bought it for my father and had it blessed but after he passed away I started wearing it. You can buy them inexpensively from just about any religious supply store or online. It is important though, to have it blessed by a priest so it is a proper "sacramental' of the Church and to receive the graces.

The "actual graces" which we receive by devoutly wearing the blessed medals help us to do good and avoid evil. Although I have no inclination to seeing visions, there are famous cases like that of Alphonse Ratisbonne and Claude Newman to whom Mary appeared and were instantly converted.

Thanks! I cherish the memory of Our Lady of Guadalupe appearing to me in the Laundry Room many years ago. She said nothing to me but just looked right through me with a benevolent look on her face. The Mudra that her right hand was in was all fingers together, pointing downwards!!

God did chose her to give birth to Our God but believing that you must give her all this attention is a very smart tactic from the enemy. By doing this your focus isn’t on Jesus the only way to get to heaven and the only one who can get your prayers to the Creator . Mary was a great mother probably the best ever . God wanted her to raise his son but she has no more authority than anyone else that goes to heaven . She’s just like all of us believers
