Explaining the Ending to Destiny's Light and Darkness Saga. Destiny 2 Final Shape's Excision Lore!

- Destiny 2's Final Shape Finale mission known as "Excision" brings an end to Destiny's first 10 year saga. In this moment I think it's clear that the Final Shape is the best expansion that Destiny has ever seen, and so I wanted to explain this moment in time, what comes next and what the message from Destiny is at the end of this first 10 year saga.

That scene with the Fallen and human children chasing a baby War Beast is too adorable.

The war pup was adorable
Was just about to comment this
Thankfully Calus wasn't alive to see it. 👀
Saint-14 being the literal wall against which darkness broke.
Even in the face of Saint 14, the witness stood no chance
I'm so, so, SO happy he was there with us at the end. Best Bird.
Titans dont hold the wall, they are the wall.
Cayde's reaction to seeing Saint was one of my favorite moments.
Wait, what was Cayde's reaction line? I think I missed it in all the hubbub.
I like how the dissenters kind of took on the Guardian Creed. They were devoted to their dislike for the Witness, were brave and chose to sacrifice their lives.
Destiny 3 will probably be us playing as a dissenter
@@greedthewolf3751 at this point if fighting the witness didn't kill us we're probably playing as humans exos and awoken for the rest of destiny's existence tbh
If we get something like a 'Destiny 3' (by 2036; giving another '10' years for a saga to pan out from here), I'd like to be able to play as Hive, Cabal, or Eliksni for a change of pace.
@@greedthewolf3751 all of the dissenters are dead. wouldn’t really make sense in the first place too, seeing as the main story is about humanity
@greedthewolf3751 i hope d3 is a time skip or flash back to dark ages
This was a perfect ending, and it has been clear from the very beginning. All those years ago, at the end of VOG, Bungie told us, "Guardians make their own fate."
Keep telling the stories.
We appreciate you, Loremaster.
Every time one of our enemies has mentioned “your meager fate” or anything like that my first thought is ALWAYS that line “Guardians make their own fate”
Can I just say that I LOVED the fact that Savathun and some of her Hive lightbearers were fighting with us. After reading the Books of Sorrow and the Witch Queen story, it felt right that she was there. It felt like she was there to avenge the Krill.
Now I understand why the Traveler gave her the light. At the end of the day she’s still young Sathona, worried about the future of her people. She couldn’t make her own fate, because they were destined to live a short life. Her fighting the Witness is like her statement that we make our own fate.
Yeah i agree and add the fact she came to terms with the lie they were told… and it’s vindication for her thoughts about the sword logic as well
That’s an amazing comment and great insight. I totally agree.
Savathun was awesome
Savathun is another aspect of that choice we have. Because one moment she choses to fight the witness and the next she choses to fight us. I believe savathun has the most options out of anyone. She could try and fill the power vacum or she could just chill and retire like Thanos. Most likely she Will still be enemy because Destiny 2 is a Game and it need baddies to fight.
But they don’t. They show up in a cutscene. Once you actually play it’s just you and other real people. I find it weird that people can have an attachment to characters who are cutscene only.

Yeah, I have some serious concerns about this community sometimes.
The opportunity to change gamer tags was a brilliant idea.
...It was also a grave mistake.
God, Excision was such an emotional finale to this 10-year-long saga.
Honestly, i had happy tears
I cried, not gonna lie
All of the emotion in the campaign too, so many genuine hugs, and when Zavala holds Cayde he's almost afraid to let go in-case he's not real. Beautiful moments in this campaign.
Bro I was sent back years back when I got the line eyes up guardian! For the first time

You could say Cayde chose his... Destiny
Then he brought Ghost back to allow us to fight on and choose our.. destiny two

Guardians make their own fate.
@@MK_Hypnosiswe might witness our destiny 3 with the reveal tomorrow
Absolute cinema
When cayde says we’re his favorite, i always view that as the traveler saying that to us through cayde. Humanity, looking at how it left the precursors and fallen, is the traveler’s favorite.
Because, we’re the most powerful guardians ever existed. We defeated city ending threats, planet ending threats, solar system threats, universe ending threats, and defeated gods.
The only thing that still stand in our way is that damn forklift.
"To pass on the brighter torch of knowledge, to teach and inspire"
That is so beautiful, Byf. And really resonant to me personally: I, too, feel a connection to my purpose through being a teacher, a storyteller and a student, always a student.
For as long as you will be here to teach and tell stories, I will be here to learn and listen.
All hail Byf the Scholar, Keeper of Lore!
See you starside 🌟
The Ghost's sacrifice was a beautiful scene. Especially seeing how our guardian reacts. Begging for our Ghost to be brought back. Cayde was a real one giving up his light for Ghost. Loved how the relationship between our Ghosts was emphasized throughout this expansion. Targe, Sundance and our Ghost.
Don't forget about Glint at the beginning. It parallels with Targe and Zavala, the difference being that Crow hadn't lost faith.
also micah-10 and all her ghosts
The moment Ghost said to channel our light through him I knew what was coming and a horrible sense of dread just just welled up immediately. Everything after that was back and forth horrible and awesome.
and Ophiuchus never said a word..
I'm gonna be honest I was quite, happy(?), is that the right word? When cayde chose to pass on.
They guy quite explicitly states he didn't want to come back from death, he was quite serene living in that warm everything with Sundance. I genuinely felt really guilty through the campaign for being happy he was back
My heart broke when our Guardian had to beg.
Just the traveller being USELESS as always
lmao, someone hates the traveler
@@crossfire4691not necessarily. For starters, why would Cayde suddenly appear where the Guardian is? And in the Light vision too. Also, when he gives his Light to our Ghost, there's also Light going into him, which may be coming from the Traveler directly.
@@TyBe-uo4ud tbh, during this expansion I found the witness more useful than the traveler lmao.
Zavala’s alt account
Its the perfect ending. This whole expansion was about showing us the answer to our biggest question.
What does the traveler want?
And it wants us to make our own fate. Its always been in our faces.
We have been JUST like the witness this whole time. Seeking answers and purpose from a silent god. Growing frustrated and angry at its choice to do nothing. To not choose for us.
And the lesson all along was to choose for ourselves. All it wants to do is give us the tools to make our own way.
fair enough, but...what about those of us who _chose_ to stick around for answers? still don't know what the traveler is or why it was buried on the pyramid race's planet like a potato, what the tree of silver wings is for, whether there's any truth to the gardener/winnower story, etc.
@@xXx_Regulus_xXx There is a line in the raid that directly answers half of those questions it's said like an encounter or two before the last one.
@xXx_Regulus_xXx We know the BIGGEST answers. We finally have an answer on what the traveler wants and why it does what it does.
Now we can move forward. Also I'm unsure about some of the stuff you said.
@@xXx_Regulus_xXx This is exactly how I felt after it was all over….so many questions yet to be answered.
@@xXx_Regulus_xXxplay through the lost ghosts missions, make sure to find the collectables in the pale heart, and unlock the traveler's lore book. They all answer a ton of questions about the traveler, and even show you it's perspective in many different moments across time.
For example, the traveler doesn't understand why people worship it, it sees the light as a curse, which is why it tries not to give it unless there is no other way, it cannot comunicate with us, all it can do is show us dreams, and it thinks it properly conveys what it wants to say, so it doesn't understand why we don't listen.
It tried to uplift the Lubraeans, but they were so focused on themselves, that they ignored the traveler.
That's some of the stuff i can remember off the top of my head, but there's a ton more.
byf making me cry on his final thoughts.
i appreciate you byf and everyone involved in sharing these stories. i love listening to stories, thank you for telling them :)
Same. Made me teary-eyed
I cried. Genuinely cried. When Ghost died, Our Guardian begging the Traveler to bring back Ghost, Cayde sacrificing himself and Ghost coming back to life it made me break down and cry.
I personally broke when i heard the OG destiny theme when all the lanterns where left to fly up, it triggered so many memories.
It all started 10 years ago with a free demo, and now its over. And finishing this journey alongside my two best friends (wich i convinced to play destiny 2 in the last years) made it even sweeter.
I, like many here, has grown with this game; Now the 13 year old me that back in the day started this path has finally seen the end, and i gotta tell you, it's pretty damn happy.

The male voice actor for the Witness killed it when it screamed WE WILL NOT YIELD!
One thing I’ve not seen much of is praise for the witness VA, from his calm sinister tone, to his anger and frustration near his end, so good
His range of voices is absolutely phe phenomenal.
It was a huge advantage in terms of its character.
My favorite moment from the whole campaign (excluding Excision) is the cutscene where it fights the Vanguard and its rage really starts to shine through. No moment in the entire history of the game has made me more genuinely afraid than when its arms unfurled through the smoke and it screamed "you are not worthy of salvation".
Was it the same person when the voice transitions from calm to roidhead? That's mad
It was revealed recently that ALL the voices of the Witness were done by the same VA, even the female ones. There was no change, and that’s wild to me
It’s truly been an honor sir.

I appreciate and value you’re insight on the lore and points or views you have, they way you evaluate information and share it with a grain of salt and go on about things some times and then proceed to say something along the lines of “hey maybe that was all nonsense, but it’s possible, but I could also be wrong” you are a great person, with a large will and even larger amounts if humility, I’m not sure how a community like this was gifted such a great lore daddy but gosh dang you were quite literally born for this job, you handle everything with such respect.
And I can only say in return, I respect you byf, not as a guardian, not as a UA-camr.
As a person, you set an example, and I honestly don’t think I would have stuck with destiny as long as I did if it wasn’t for your videos. The message "guardian's make their own fate" from vault of glass has never felt more relevant. Thank you Byf, I look forward to this next chapter.
I've always found that damage phase indicator to be one of the best storytelling moments in a raid. Atheon tries to force you to align with a particular timestream but we make our own fate. It all comes back around.
Not just that phrase, but how it's KABR'S SHIELD helped us through the story. The Aegis, which we used to break the unbreakable in the Vault, is now being used again to break the Darkness.
Maybe Bungie will gas light the playerbase that once the traveler is finally repaired for the millionth time we'll finally meet them.
Did you notice that the eliksni fighting by our side were our crew from Season of the Plunder?
I noticed that. It seems Spider sent some envoys in his stead.
I cheered seeing Scur-V, Halsiks and the Skiffblades charging up the right side with Mithrax. Plunder might have been a filler season, but it was a damn fun one.

I agree. I’m unsure whether or not I should put the game down with this chapter of my life and the game coming to an end. I was 13 when I started playing the Destiny 1 beta. Now I’m 23. This game has been… THE game… MY game.
It’s been fun. As Ghost said, now it’s time to find out what my future will be.
The message has been the same since D1 Year 1
It's never changed

Dude that's what I thought of too! This is an underrated comment for sure!
You can see the same message during the dps phase in the new 12-man activity
And the entity called the Traveler is just a myth yet paradox of in game lore. Game was and ended as nonsense that gas lit the player base from the start. We never did meet the traveler, sphere was empty traveler doesn't exist. Total cop out by Bungie.
Thank you Byf for covering Destiny's lore so thoroughly and for so long, I've dipped in and out of Destiny over the years but whenever I've needed a catchup on what's been happening I know I can always return here to learn!
I also appreciate the Lore Tab from the new Exotic sword, forged of the Traveler's own power. While forever silent it seems, the Traveler does love us. And that's enough for me.
The Traveler doesn't exist. The game ended up being total nonsense. Saying the Traveler is an entity that can't exert it's will is utter nonsense contradicted by the premise of the whole game creating ghosts and reviving us. It's a total cop out to create a narrative by Bungie. I'm glad I saw how garbage Destiny 2 was at release and never wasted 6+ years on just being gas lit some more and never meeting the Traveler.
That shot at the end with us on the Helm, and Crow briefing us on what’s on the horizon made me think of a line by Captain Price in the OG Modern Warfare: “Just another day at the office.”
We get to rest now for a moment, but there’s still work to do.
I was honestly thinking "Wow... the only thing missing is a cigar... Wait; can Guardians get lung cancer?" XD

After reading the lore of the ship " the first knife " and the witness's dialogue about it being the first knife raises a lot of questions of it being wielded by someone unknown.
Yeah it seems that Bungie has definitely made it even more ambiguous. The Gardner, and The Winnower are probably getting more, and more acknowledged.
Maybe this entity is responsible for the precursors race to get the veil and try to transform the universe into a frozen and prefect state and maybe this entity is the next big bad in the next saga
@@jesseritchie9282 during the raids jumping puzzle the witness verbatim says that it was created by the winnower as the first knife, and the guardians by the gardener, but that neither of these entities can determine the actions of their "knives", basically implying that guardians and the witness are both cosmic forces but ultimately both have free will
This occurred to me when with the witnesses final line of ‘I don’t understand’ was that ‘I’ just the last remaining of the precursors. It makes sense now why because it guides us with those forms to different paths, but giving us a sword demands only one thing. I love that symbolism so much
Destiny wouldn't be the same without you. You have a way of connecting the pieces some can't or don't have the time for. Playing the story missions and awaiting the Byf videos is how I experience and have fun with the story. Thank you, Byf.
I'd like to take this moment to thank you, Byf. I started playing Destiny back during the beta, but I don't think I would have made it this far into the story without you. Destiny has had its share of ups and downs and there's a high probability I would have put the game down for good as early as vanilla D2. What stopped me from doing that and kept me going were your lore videos, specifically The Books of Sorrow. Ever since then, I've been invested in the story Bungie is trying to tell especially when the Hive take center stage. The Witness isn't my personal endgame, but it was a climax worth... witnessing.
As a seasoned dungeon master I must say. Your way with words, your tone, and how you carry your voice. You are an excellent storyteller and an invaluable well of knowledge. Carry on Byf and may you inspire generations to come!
"Seasoned dungeon master"😂😂😂. Kid get a life maybe?!😂

I was in awe listening to what is possibly the most grounded revelation to the end of this massive saga, then I saw "Ikora's Reverbed Fartz" waltz across the screen and lost it
Byf, that was a fantastic closing. Good for you man. I’m happy you found your calling. We all appreciate you.
Lore Master? No no, your proper title is Lore Daddy, Byf. You have told us stories for years and I know you will tell so many more in the future. Thank you for what you do my friend, you’ve been with us through thick and thin. Can’t wait to see what the future holds! Tutum iter amicus meus
There have been many seasons and emotions along this 10 year Destiny journey. Tons of joy, grief, struggle, and growth; both in game and outside. What has been consistent however, has been the mental anchor of the lore of Destiny. Thank you for sharing this with the world and inviting others to be apart of this experience.
I still remember tearing up when you did the orgional video on the thunderlord D1 lore. I dont even think it was sad, it was just so beutifully done, and I think that is where you established yourself as the voice of the story, the narrator, of the last 10 years of of Destiny. Keep going, keep thinking, keep reading and keep teaching. We love you Byf
Any body else yell "I'll make my own destiny!" on that last mission. Been waiting a long time for that moment
I said "TASTE THE RAINBOW MOTHAFUCKA 🌈🌈🌈" whilst blasting the witness with light
18:35 man….byf keep it going and we love you, more then you know!!! You’ve made me soo happy to learn more and WE will always be here waiting for a new video(no matter the game). We all grew up together with lore daddy telling us story’s (I’m 36 now and found you 7yrs ago) so thank you sir!!!
Thanks for being here, Byf. At a point where Im heartbroken to not feel confident enough to want to support Bungie financially anymore, at a point where I dont have the time or energy to keep up the grind, you're still here providing the keys to the best parts of this universe.
10 years. I was 14 when I started playing Destiny. I’m 24 now. Almost half my life playing this game through all of its ups and downs. Longest break I ever took was 2 months during season of the haunted. I played every single piece of content with the same two people I started with during the Alpha, my uncle and a friend I made at my first job during my teen years. Us 3 got emotional after defeating the witness. My uncle watched me grow in life and also as a Guardian. The two of them are like the brothers I never had. We sat in orbit after just talking about all the memories and truly not understanding what’s next. I hope we still get to play new stories but if this ends here, I’m glad I got to spend 10 years with this franchise and managed to keep the same fireteam throughout. Thank you Bungie, for everything.
It has been an honor to be a part of all these stories with you our beloved Lore Master!!
What a ride. Been here since the beginning, and we’ve come so far. Can wait to see what you’ve got next!
Thanks Byf, I'm glad to have sat by the campfire with you 😊
Byf got me crying over here over that ending. It’s been such a long and incredible 10 years. You sir are the reason Destiny became my favorite game. When I wasn’t as enamored with the gameplay in D1 as I wanted to be, I read a couple grimoire cards and found one of your videos and it captured my attention in a way the game alone wasn’t at the time. I’d stay awake at night later than I should watching your videos and reading the cards on the Destiny app. There’s a sadness that this chapter is over but happiness at all of the memories I got to make and everything we got to experience in game. Can’t wait to see what’s next in the reveal stream today
I am proud to have taken part in this wonderfully crafted universe. From The Taken King and Rise of Iron, to the Red War, The Witch Queen, and now The Final Shape, I had the chance to forge a path, to find my purpose, to Become Legend. We faced oblivion, wielding Light and Dark in perfect harmony, faced with impossible odds, yet we achieved victory as a community. I will forever cherish the memories I have and will make going forward. I am anxious about what comes next, what threats we will face, both in game or in reality. But, until the future rears its head at us, we shall keep our eyes up, Guardians. Thank you.
it's been a honor to get to listen to you and your story telling for the past ten years. Cheers man.
Babe wake up new byf video is out
Her: what? Who's byf and why are you crying?
Shaddap!! I’m trying ta sleep!!
Can we just sit back and appreciate that we managed to get a post credit scene and we got an incredible ending? For all the loud complaining over the years, the appreciation should be just as loud
To be fair a lot of the complaining was warranted but they did really come together to make a great DLC and ending
pretty sure alot of the complainers left for good lol
Guaranteed if it wasn't for all that complaining they would've cut back on this one.
@@wearsjorge55don't break your hand patting your toxic behavior too hard on the back 😂😂😂
@@PopularNobody he isnt wrong tho...? lol Everyone universally has said the final shape delivered and is the best expansion. They killed it in the witch queen to fumbling light fall so hard everyone lost faith and the season were pretty trash too. All the negative reviews and complaining led to them locking in delaying 4 months to make this the best. Idk why you feel the need to defend bungie with him bad they have been the past year.
Thank you Byf for all the stories and teachings over the past years. Look forward to what is to come.
When I started my journey in Destiny about ten years ago, I had no idea where it would lead. I've been here for the highs and the lows; for all the "this game has no story" talk; and for all the "dead game" talk. I look at just the other night, where my fifteen year old daughter asked me to tell her about Destiny and asked if she could try it. She sat and watched a bit of the world first race with me (everyone stuck in the white room). When someone finally got to the Witness she was in awe at what he looked like. She even said to be before bed, "I wonder if those buttons on his robes mean anything". She was right.
When the end mission came online, she came and sat and watched the fight and pointed out to me when she saw a cornerstone or a light pool in the chaos of the battle. As the Witness exploded she ask "Can I get a Steam account on my laptop to try this out?" She was six years old when I started this journey. Now, as we step into the unknown future, my little girl wants to join me on my adventure. What excitement she has coming; I've given her the link to the ten hour video so she can try and catch up.
What a time to be a Destiny fan.
I stopped playing years ago but I listen to your videos time to time Byf! I can't believe it's been 10 years so quickly. Thanks for the ride!
I've been watching you for the last 10 years and have always been happy to see one of your videos pop in my sub feed! Love what you do, thank you for all of it!! Have a good one Lore Master :)
The Witness was an analogy to the community. Mad at the traveler for not giving them purpose and doing more when it only ever wanted to see what you’d do with its gifts. The negative voices were also louder than the positive lol
Nah...
Bungie fucked up a lot over the years and took many of its customers for fools.
That is a fact, it happened.
They lied, utilized of very unethical marketing and sales practices, doubled down on their lies, dismissed clear and obvious problems with their ways of doing things and many more fucked up stuff
TFS will not change that. TFS is a good reminder and a show of gratitude for the people who made and shaped this universe but Bungie is still an evil company
The traveler kept leaving and made its own enemies.
@aceonikuma the traveler kept leaving because of its enemy not because it was making enemies.
@@likwid_smoke it made enemies of the witness by leaving them
Yeah the witness needed to buy Shadowkeep and was on the revenge path ever since
3 Lights shooting out of the traveler are the 3 exotic class items
the 3 lights are the echoes for the next episodes and the first one is on nessus that we're about to encounter with the vex
@@VoidNxva It's either one per episode or all three are tied to the first one. The report from Crow suggests he will be absent during Echoes whilst he looks for Fikrul, who is the subject of the second episode. So its possible each light is tied to each Act of this first episode, and that once they are all dealt with, we turn back to Crow and Fikrul for the second episode.

It’s been an honor sitting by your campfire for the past ten years Byf. I look forward to your next story.
Without you, I'd never fully understand the beauty of a game I've played for almost 10 years. thank you Byf.
Damn I was hoping to see byf’s reaction to excision, I saw an exhausted aztecross but I was hoping for the lore daddy
I mean… I have my reaction, I just don’t know if I can immediately upload it because I need to cut out the swearing 😅
It's great that Byf finally defeated the Witness alongside his fellow 11 guardians, like Ikora's reverbed fartz and Ada-1's Crusty Mainframe
Nobody calls you a lore master. Your official title is LORE DADDY.
The last ten years has been amazing, and your content has brought this from a game to a fully realized universe for me. Truly, thank you.
You tell them Lore Daddy... Destiny after a while left my budget capabilities, but you have always been here. Thank you for pushing through, it's been one of the best lore journeys I have ever been on, and I can't wait for more.
What's interesting about the Witness is that they're simply an underling to something greater (Winnower) based on how I took their dialogue in the raid
The Witness calls itself the first knife and claims that gods made it, but it also says those gods couldn’t control what the blade carves; what the final shape looks like.
@@dembro27 perhaps the WInnower, due to having to lens itself through our way of thought whenever it writes to us (by proxy or otherwise), has a modicum of self-imperceivable 'respect' for the 'do what you want to' attitude of the Gardener?
Then again, the rules of the game:
Gardener may move and plant seeds, but not speak to the plants that grow.
Winnower may convince plants to conform to patterns (The Pattern, Final Shape, Sword Logic), but cannot move nor act.
@@koldraxonofthefirstseven5718 Where can you find those rules? This could confirm my theory. I think the Winnower abides in the Asendant plane and the Veil is just its transceiver. The only rule I've seen are the rules of the flowers. Ive never seen the rules for the players. Where can I find them?
Please don't let it be true. The last thing Destiny needs is Blizzard level writing.

As a bald man myself, it is true, bald people are the worst.
