Okay I have to admit, the visual comedy of 3:47 made me crack up laughing. You make a good point about the password system. I begrudgingly admit, as much as I hate those long passwords, they do serve a purpose. I really like how this game is structured but it has a lot going against it. Those dang bats or birds or whatever those things are...
You know, it's funny because when Renesance played through this on stream I made fun of him for "tripping on a puddle" and I got my just desserts. I deserved that more than you know! And I re-watched your video on this after I posted mine today, and I agree... the structure's nice but a little more freedom would've gone a long way to take this game to the next level. I guess they just really liked the movie. And that noise SLAYS me. I cracked up so much just even editing that part about the ending... I'm such a dork :D
Yeah! That was a nice touch too. I guess that's part of why they have those random missions in the middle of the game to establish some passage of time.
@@hungrygoriya Yes! Curse of Monkey Island is my favorite in the series. Lot of people say Monkey Island 2, but it had no insult sword fighting. And I didn't like the ending. I feel like Curse had to retcon it. lol I remember really liking this Robin Hood game as a kid. Didn't even remember it gave you limited continues. I don't remember finishing it with too many problems. I did use Nintendo Power though. lol Anyway great review!
It looks like they bump their heads at the end. Also hearing Hungry coming up with new and interesting ways to describe her murderings is always a good time. GG!
The movie is my most favorite Robin Hood adaptation and I found this game to be surprisingly immersive, it's this immersiveness that to me made it a fun adventure game. Entertaining review btw
"Like Chuck Norris and David Hasselhoff" I'm still laughing hahaha. And then the horse segment. This game is so ridiculous. And full of... passion. :D Thank you again for a great review and so many chuckles and smiles.
This is one of my favorite movies and favorite games on nes. It was actually a decently hard game at the time and still gives a pretty decent challenge now, well worth a play. I wish there were still more conversions of movies to games like this. Your review is very spot on to my experience. Wish I still own this, need to get me a nes again, with the covid retro spike prices won't be anytime soon. Love your reviews and play troughs, has relit my fire for the retro world. Thanks and please keep posting.
Thanks so much for the thoughtful comment. I was pretty surprised that I made it through since you're absolutely right... this game is hard! I white-knuckled my way through the horse parts and got lucky for sure! And yeah, game prices are on the obscene side right now... my collecting has really slowed down over the past few months for the same reasons, but this game is thankfully not overly expensive from what I recall. I hope you can get a copy or find a way to play again sometime. I plan to keep posting for a long while yet. This video took me a while since I had some real life stuff to contend with, but I'm hoping to get back to more frequent uploads again. It's very nice to know that you and others are enjoying the videos. :)
Seeing the gameplay footage for this game brought back so many vivid memories. I remember playing this at my neighbor's house during my early teenage years. We never got very far, unfortunately. It would have been worth it to see that ending!
Hahaha yeah, that ending is totally worth a million more playthroughs as far as I'm concerned. It's nice to know you have fond memories of it as well! I think I would've liked this one as a younger person.
Glad you went with this one next! This game has a lot of history and interesting tidbits and factoids around it, and it had a huge scope for such a small, intended-as-throwaway cashgrab title. And with such a unique dev team, they managed to make a weird but fun, charming game I have to say is good.
It's definitely good! I agree with you. It was extremely charming, and I know I didn't talk about the music much here, but that was one of the best parts of the game to me... the soundtrack was perfect even though it wasn't actually from the Robin Hood movie.
My grandparents owned this game and as a kid I popped it in one time to try it out and fell in love! Not being able to save was detrimental as was the fact that I could only play it at their house, but when we were staying at their place I would wake up at 5am to play and ultimately beat the game. I loved all the different phases of gameplay, the graphics were impressive for the time, I drew so much art inspired by this game, and really Robin Hood Prince of Thieves is a title I had loved but forgotten about over the decades until seeing this video. I am definitely going to have to go back and give it another play now almost 30 years later. Thanks for making this video!
Awww thank you for sharing your memories at your grandparents' house! That's awesome! I hope your revisit to this one is as pleasant as the memories you have from your childhood. Good luck!
I forgot how much I played this as a kid! To be honest, I’m more of a “Defender of the Crown” guy, but that’s not even really a Robin Hood game. It was fun to watch you and relive this part of my childhood.
I just saw a bit of Defender of the Crown a few weeks ago and it looks like something I might also enjoy. Thanks so much for checking out the video, and glad to hear it sent you back to a nice time in your past.
Hungry Goriya Cool! I hope you get to joust someone off his horse. Just don’t ask me about the portraits crumbling: all I know is that it represents your popularity and can lead to a game over. And click on Sherwood Forest. Duh.
"These and many other little sidequests were stuffed into a movie plot that already had a ton of great things going for it." The truth is, it's actually the other way around. It was the movie that got shoehorned into the game. Many gamers never knew this cart originally started out as a generic Robin Hood title, and it was even previewed in Nintendo Power #16 as "The Adventures of Robin Hood." But when Virgin and Sculptured Software saw the movie was coming out they saw an opportunity to sang the license and basically added in the movie plot at the last minute. That's also why you don't get any songs from the film as well.
Oh seriously? Yeah, I had no idea! That makes complete sense though... it was good that they were able to add in some parts from the movie then! I'm impressed!
Great review! This game is one of my guilty pleasures that I love to play now and then despite its many flaws. Beating this game back in the day was a chore. And that melee battle music is some seriously good stuff.
I can definitely see why you'd want to come back to it again and again. It definitely has some charm! The soundtrack was amazing... I agree that the melee battle song was especially good, but just the medieval stuff throughout the game was right up my alley.
I remember the top-down perspective causing some really weird stuff when you're walking around. Basically, if the perspective showed an object in your way, then it was in your way.... even if realistically, it shouldn't be. For example, the castles were designed isometrically, so the towers looked slanted. You could get stuck by walking in to the 'top' of the tower, even though the castle should be something like 30 feet away. "Oh no! I'm being blocked by that castle way over there! How will I stop the Sheriff now?!"
I really appreciate that you review some more obscure games. While i enjoy the nostalgia of hearing you talk about something like Faxanadu, these less well known game reviews make me feel like i'm slowly gaining a better appreciation for game design - it's as though i'm taking a history class. Different possible approaches (lives, passwords, leveling up vs not, equipment, inventory, combat styles, view, etc) were tried in every combination in the NES days, and sometimes it worked and sometimes it didn't. It's like the very early days of flying machines - all kinds of different bizarre designs were tried before trial and error pared it down to the few working body plans we see today. Thanks for this - your videos are great.
I loved Robin Good prince of thieves. Saw it on the theater in 2nd grade. I always liked this game too, especially how the outlaws forest hideout grows over time.
The strategy Nintendo Power Power gave, which worked well for me, was use the bow and stay in that alcove at the top. Mostly it can't hit you there. When I was more daring, I would follow it as it runs around, hit it more, then run back to hide.
This really needed a battery save system IMO. It was fun and as a long time lover of the Robin Hood story (A version of Robin Hood was the first book I ever read on my own) I enjoyed it. The wedding quest I didn't actually mind because though it wasn't part of the movie such activities are common in Robin Hood literature. I saw the movie when my parents rented it soon after it came out on VHS but didn't see it again for several years because they preferred the Errol Flynn Robin Hood so much. (We watched the Flynn Robin Hood as a family once or twice a month) I liked both so when a TV and VCR were handed down and put in my room I got myself a copy of Prince of Thieves on VHS then later Prince of Thieves was one of the first five movies I owned on DVD.
A battery save would've went a long way. I really need to read more of the books out there on this topic, or maybe even look into playing the point and click game sometime. I'm obviously missing out on some interesting Robin Hood shenanigans.
This channel is so underated! You should make a facebook page is very easy to get a bigger audience to bring here. people don't really search this kind of content, but they love it when they see it
Thanks for checking out the video and for your kind words. I am not actually personally on Facebook at the moment, but I'm on a bunch of different other social media platforms. I know some folks share my videos on Facebook at least!
I agree! I would've loved this as a kid I think... the soundtrack totally swept me off my feet too. I love the medieval music, and there's a surprising variety here.
Loved this game on GB and beaten too. The game really follows the movie closely and I loved the movie! Just got for NES it should come within a few days, can't wait to play it!
When I was a kid, I wanted to be Robin from that movie. Loved the music too! This was my favorite game to play. It did confuse me that the cousin was the sherif. You should do the Quatro version. I've only made it to the third area. Dizzy was brutal too!
Robin Hood Prince of Thieves is such a memorable movie for me. I loved it and have loved many reinventions of Robin Hood over the years. Maybe I'll try the Quattro version someday. I've seen it played and it looks like a very slow and deliberate platformer. I might like it!
It looks like Robin took damage during that ending! That is what I thought of when the red flash happened. Perhaps he can get the kiss in during his i-frames.
Good morning Goriya! Back in 1993 I had bought this game used along with festers quest. It was my best friends birthday coming up and I was to give him one of the two. I ended up keeping Robin Hood, never beat it or anything but had a lot of fun with it as a kid. Probably never even got that far...time to revisit maybe
It's cool that you kept Robin Hood... I haven't played Fester's Quest yet, but hopefully you made the right decision! It's absolutely a great time to revisit! Enjoy if you do :)
A valiant effort to make us want to play this AVGN fodder - worthy of the an experienced defense lawyer. I'm sure it really is worth playing as you say, but anyone who has a NES Classic Mini has a ton of A-level NES adventure games that easily blow RHPOT out of the water. Zelda: Outlands, Zelda: Legend of Link, Silva Saga, Just Breed, and dozens more. But back in the 80s, if my parents had bought me RHPOT I'd probably have enjoyed it. There's a lot to be said about not having any other games to play :)
I think there's good in every game. It's easy to compare them to others and write them off as worse, which is a fair way to assess how you choose what you'd like to play, but I like to take a game out as its own thing and try to examine it on its own. I grew up with very few games, so having an opportunity to play something like this, based on a movie I used to (and probably still would) love dearly is a positive experience.
Wow we watched this movie dozens of times as kids, never knew there was a game - would have definitely gotten frustrated by the high degree of difficulty in this game and the lack of saves! Cool video :)
I liked playing this game at my friend’s house when we were kids, but I never really got into it much because of the password system. We would often get interrupted to go play outside or have dinner, etc and wind up having a to start over. I liked the gameplay, but I didn’t really want to play through it. We’d just duck around with it a while before putting in Mario or bad dudes.
one of my childhood games, since we had so few games back then. I played this one a lot. Its one that I have a hard time not wearing the rose colored glasses on when people expose its shortcomings lol. But it does have its fair share of pain points for sure. Back then, I didn't even really understand the concept of leveling up. And when my uncle showed us the passcode system and I found I could use certain ones to skip back after dying, I got frustrated that I couldn't' wear certain armor when i did that as some items are level locked. When I found the game in storage when I got into high school and played/beat it again for the 100th time, I realized why. lol but yeah, the bo staff is a cheat code when you first get it. But one of the maces/flails is my favorite weapon as it has as much reach as the large sword, not as strong, but super fast to use like one of those balloon bounce balls on a string.
I'm glad you got to play this when you were younger! I think I would've really liked the different game styles in it as a kid. I definitely appreciated them as an adult! I watched a friend play through this for the first time a few days ago and he was using the mace! I don't know if I had it towards the end of the game or not. I can't remember now, but I just whacked people with the staff, haha
The music's really good! And I enjoyed the different game modes too, except the one-on-one fighting. That just hurts my feelings because I can't seem to get an edge without putting someone up on a table haha
Goriya, I'm sending a pattern here. I feel like either you are tragically subjected to games that need you to start from the beginning, of you seek them out and might be a glutton for punishment. But with how you beat em should show how good you are! This one looks really fun, but those portraits are just nightmare incarnate! This is yet another one I've not heard of until you!
Hahaha well, I think they just happen to find me. I don't usually go into a lot of these knowing much about them at all, though it does sound like a curse when you point out how many times this has happened to me by now! And yeah, the portraits man... holy smokes. They're something else! There's that one nice one of the mean Baron that's in more colours than just brown and black, but that's such an outlier compared to everything else that's going on. It's so silly!
Hopefully it'll be coming to your stream some day when you have some time to sit down with something longer and not so speedy :) And thanks for taking the time!
If I played this game for the first time today, I wouldn't enjoy it. But because I played this game as a kid, it's such a massive nostalgia hit for me and I love it. Love the overhead gameplay, the fights, the big brawls, the horse racing. So good! Also, thanks for game capturing composite/RF signals.
I was surprised at how much I ended up liking it, but I'm a big fan of anything with RPG elements so it turned out well enough. It had enough charm and silliness to keep me laughing, which is also an important part of playing tougher retro games! And you're very welcome! I usually capture NES with composite because I grew up with that aesthetic and have a huge soft spot for it. I'm glad you enjoy the fuzzfest!
I'd like to think we did :D But yeah. I always try to walk a line between being disrespectful to people making art because that's hard work, but good lord... Friar Tuck's eyes were two pits to hell.
Another excellent review! I might have rented this when it was originally released although I can't specifically remember. I loved the movie however and actually watched my VHS a few months ago. Always my favorite Robin Hood movie and I enjoyed Disney's animated movie in the 1980s as a child. I love your descriptions of the game play and characters. My thoughts exactly on nearly everything! I'll definitely try finding this game! Kinda reminds me of the Willow nes game. Thank you again! Thank you for being so awesome!
Thank you for spending the time to watch :) And I've wanted to watch this movie again since playing the game but haven't been able to carve out the time to do it. I really need to get on that!
@@hungrygoriya your videos are excellent and you're a delight to listen to. When I watched Prince of Thieves a few months back it had been at least a decade since I saw it. It came out when I was 9 or 10 and I immediately loved it. I loved the score for the movie too!
@@azuzastreet9087 Oh the music in that movie is so memorable! I loved it too. And being a Canadian, Bryan Adams was obviously a treasure as well! And thanks so much about the channel :)
@@hungrygoriya I did a little looking and found that the music was done by Paul Webb who also did many many other great retro titles, including Doom (SNES) ! Lots of adaptations too
I remember enjoying the movie back when I was a kid, but I haven't seen it since. Might be worth a revisit some day. I've been curious about the game for a while now, since I heard it was an RPG. Eventually I'll hunt down a copy of it. Although the idea of making Robin Hood the only one on your team not using a bow is kinda weird...
The movie is jam-packed with cheese... I love the humour in it since I think I have a bit of nostalgia mixed in there too, but the action's good, and the soundtrack's also really gorgeous. I hope you'll give the NES game a try. Robin can equip a bow but I think arrows are consumable, which was probably the reason my hoarding tendencies didn't want me to use it. The staff weapon's weaker but it got the job done so well that I rarely switched weapons after that unless I was being attacked by ranged fighters.
As I've said before, I love this game. The music, the different gameplay modes, and the sense of adventure are great. However, I agree with you about the horse segment lol! Man this game could be frustrating! You can also get to the end of the game and not be able to beat it because you missed an important weapon which I did in one of my playthroughs.
Haha that horse transition failure is one of my favourite memories from this game. There's a few clips of me playing this buried deep in my stream archives and I think that's one of them! Sorry to hear you missed something and got yourself stuck. I hate when games have a point of no return for important items. I did that to myself in Willow by accident.
As flawed as this game is, I really loved it as a kid, even to the point of renting it multiple times just to get that little bit further. I never owned the NES version, but I did get the Gameboy version which I played the most until I was an adult (and as far as I know, the Gameboy version was very nearly identical to the NES version, but I could be wrong on that point). Looking back, its clear that the developers had a very good vision for this game and it might have been a bit to ambitious, but I would MUCH rather prefer a game with ambition that ended with a flawed game over the amount of cash grabs at the time. Plus it helps that Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves is one of my favorite movies. Also, Robin Hood: Men in Tights is alright ;) the 90s was good to Robin Hood.
I haven't tried the Game Boy game yet, but I'm certainly interested in seeing what that one was like compared to the NES game. I agree with you completely. It's nice to see a game that's actually fleshed out and a tribute in many ways to the original content of the film.
I’m going to stick my neck out and say that I really enjoy the aesthetic of NES games in composite video, rather than the super clean look of RGB. It seems like every other UA-camr these days wants to get that mega sharp look with their NES captures, but footage like this just looks *right* to me. It lends a certain authenticity to the image. Anyway, Fun vid, as usual. Bravo!
Thank you very much! The NES is the only console I have right now that I don't have a higher quality output for and part of me has kept it that way because I also love the composite aesthetic. The NES was my first console and it's near and dear to me. I'm glad you're also enjoying the aesthetic.
Hungry Goriya that’s so cool. I’m the exact same way. Even my Master System is hooked up via RGB on an old 80’s pro monitor. And I’ve acquired both a Framemeister and an OSSC over the years. But no matter what, I’ve never been able to get satisfied with anything other than composite for my NES.
Hahahaha wow i've never noticed that Robin Hood looked like David Hasslehoff, but now I will never un-see that! One of my all time favorite games and I loved the movie. Also......you mean to tell me there was a MAP feature...?? I've never even noticed this... as much as I've played it 🤣🤣🤣 would have saved my younger self so much frustration hah
I can't unsee it either, so welcome to the club! And yes, the map is there and it's so helpful. It's not as if the areas are so huge that I really needed it, but it was great to remind me of where I'd already been since some areas can look very same-y. Maybe next time you play, you can try it out!
What a bizarre thing to hide a password system behind a cheat code :S That must have been a last minute change, _"oh, we wanted to make an RPG, but realized it's a bit short, let's make the player finish it in one sitting now!"_ How did you get the passwords in game? But it was made by Sclptured Software, who would also make the Super Star Wars games and the SNES ports of Mortal Kombat 1-3.
See that's the thing! There were no in-game passwords at all. When you died, you could either "continue" or "restart" with no other options. I have no idea how or when the passwords themselves were discovered but I was able to find them online. They more or less take you to each major plot point. When I played through, I didn't use them. The Super Star Wars games are so fun but so tough... I love the music and the visuals though. They clearly do good work! I've only played MK on Genesis. I'll have to try out the SNES versions sometime.
It sounds like the passwords might be some sort of debug mode for the devs to test things during development. A lot of times that stuff just gets hidden rather than removed, since removing it takes more work and taking out whole swacks of code might create bugs.
If I remember correctly some if not all of the passwords and how to input the where revealed in an issue of Nintendo Power. Although it has been sooo many years I could be remembering the details wrong, I had it when it first come out and the passwords shortly after, so it wasn't a huge secret for a long time or anything. I will do some searching real fast.
The game featured in vol 26 I think it was but the password system was not mentioned. I can not for the life of me remember where I found out about it from, of course thag was 27ish years ago .. Sorry :( Shhhh yes I am old 😆. So
@@japanimationman4442 Yeah, fair enough. I had that thought too, but it would've been nice to have them available. I'd love to know how they were first discovered.
Ah, the glorious 12th century AD... when atmospheric oxygen levels were so absurdly high, human flesh literally exploded like pyrotechnical dynamite, throwing bones like shrapnel in all directions!!
You don't disappoint, Hungry Goriya. I knew there would be humor, I knew there would be passion, but there was also an in-depth, fully fleshed-out review here that was as interesting as it was entertaining. Even having played through this, I didn't have nearly the insight you had into this absurd game. Well done, once again.. and thank you for disseminating the pure passion that is NES Robin Hood. Oh, and Super Robin Hood - GENERIC?! HOW COULD YOU??
You're too kind, seriously! Finishing this game was a matter of principle to me after getting wrecked in the horse section. I can still see your comment (HAHAHAHAHA) flashing by in chat :) Maybe it's time for a second playthrough, hmmm? I had to put that passion on display for all to see. I still think about that pretty often and crack up accordingly. I put that part about Super Robin Hood in there just for you. Maybe as vengeance for the puddle-tripping...
@@hungrygoriya Instead of a 2nd playthrough of this one, I highly recommend you to do Super Robin Hood, and you will see what a superior game it is! >:)
A good way to beat the 1st boss. Jump up onto the table and jump over him. Back him up against the table and hit him with the sword. Try to stand just out of reach of his battle axe.
Nice that you ask the guy what you can steal from him :P I had the game in spannish, since they sold it in Holland only in Spannish, so I didn't know what they were saying. Didn't understand it at all. Now I got it in English....and should give it a second chance.
I'm always looking to steal stuff in these kinds of games... it's my favourite part! I hope you enjoy it if you try it again in English sometime. There are a lot of little quests to do but it adds up to a lot of fun in my opinion! Knowing what your goals are is important.
NES games definitely have an ongoing theme of Trial & Error. Since most of them are quite short, they made them tough so you couldn't just plow thru them in a single afternoon & then never play them again. Just a sign of the times I suppose. Part of the charm is slowly learning, getting better & getting just a bit further on your next attempt.
@@skins4thewin Knowing him, I doubt he watched anything beforehand. He's been playing games for a very long time and he streams everything live, so his reactions are genuine! He does reviews here on UA-cam as well and I really like his channel. If you're looking for more NES/SNES reviews, check out Quwebs!
The mystery of childhood was a skeleton in the well in the middle of the game - it was impossible to kill him (I think?). He was the same at the end of the game, but you could kill him with a special dagger.
@@hungrygoriya The first skeleton was in the basement, which we entered through the hundredths in one forest, where there was a fight with a huge bull, at the end of the tunnel there was a large skeleton and an old woman behind it. He was invincible, there was nothing to kill him. To this day, I do not know what he is there for. The same skeleton was at the end of the game, but that's where we managed to kill it with a special dagger.
@@lucassdmsiudym7707 OH that's right! I remember now... I remembered fighting a giant skeleton later on in the game but I didn't realize you could see him early on! That sucks that he was invincible early on if you didn't know any better. It kinda takes the wind out of the sails of exploration.
Awesome game! One of the most adult themed games on the system too. I think Nintendo gave them a pass as it was based on a movie and bound to be a success.
It's honestly not bad. I think it took me about 8 hours of playing (on stream, talking to chatters the entire time) to get through the game? If you're used to NES games, I doubt you'll struggle too much with it.
Hey Hun did you see Robin Hood: Men in Tights ? it's a Mel Brooks Film so it might not Be to your Taste but it's another Take on Robin Hood that you could check out.
I have! I liked it a lot as a kid but watched it again a few years ago and didn't enjoy it nearly as much. Prince of Thieves is still great for me though!
It looks like Jerry Seinfeld kissing Elaine! Seriously though, I loved the hell out of this game as a kid and beat it quite a few times. I still have my copy but I doubt itll hold up. Its suprisingly fun for a licensed title of the era.
I had no expectations coming into this game and it made me laugh every step of the way... you never know! Playing it again now might just take you back to those childhood times. I get that way with Bill & Ted since I played that a bunch growing up. Whenever I revisit it, I always enjoy my time.
Seems really packed with content for a licensed game, just a shame about the lack of save. Perfect for emulation as at least you can use save states to get round the problem if you want to go through completely.
@@hungrygoriya I must have seen in on a rerun too, or it took some years for it to be broadcast in The Netherlands. I guess we are about the same age or so.
I have played this game so many times inn my youth. I Have nevere ever seen the game over screen before this video. This is a really easy game. YUou get so many apples and bread from the dead enemies at its imposibil to lose. And for grinding if you want to do that just wait until you get the stick from Litle John
I didn't find out about this game until I was in high school. It was surprisingly fun, but had a lot of rushed elements that made it less than memorable
I definitely found it entertaining, even if it's not the first thing I'm looking for when I want to play an NES game. I had a lot of great laugh out loud moments playing.
They do show him, but he looks more like a robust Legolas than Sean Connery! I'm still always surprised to see him at the end of the movie... it's such a strange cameo. Thanks very much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

Wow I'm realizing as long as I've had this game I've never given it the time of day. I don't recognize any of this, haha. ...A random suggestion: I'd like to hear your review of Magical Starsign on the DS. I really enjoyed that one x)
It might just be time to play it then, hmmm? I picked up Magical Starsign a while back but haven't had a chance to sit down with it yet. I do have a way to capture DS too... let me see what I can do!
Robin Hood was one of those games that looked awesome...while I was reading about in Nintendo Power. I'm kind of glad I ended up never actually playing it until emulation was a thing and I didn't spend any real money on it.
@@hungrygoriya The hardest part for me is the late game castles where the enemies can just shoot you from across the screen. That stuff drives me nuts lol.
@@the1ucidone I hear ya. I had some awfully close calls but I also had a pocket full of bread and apples... I honestly think I got through this game mostly on luck. The last stretch was really shaky... I didn't think I was going to make it through the part where you have to get into the last castle because I kept triggering a melee fight >:(
Is there any RPG that tries to simplify passwords to the extreme, like maybe it only records your XP, but your XP is like a resource that you use in a beginning hub area to gain access to a better loadout and more advanced areas of the game?
Okay I have to admit, the visual comedy of 3:47 made me crack up laughing. You make a good point about the password system. I loved the way the camp expanded as you played through the game as a kid. It really felt like you were helping it grow
Yeah! That was a nice touch too. I guess that's part of why they have those random missions in the middle of the game to establish some passage of time.
100% agree. And I felt really terrible when the fire was set to the beautiful camp I helped to create. I was 7 at the time, but never forgot.
This was the game that taught me the word melee when I was a kid
Funny I learned melee from Monkey Island
I grew up playing Curse of Monkey Island... those are such good games
GG!
That's also a great theory... a good head bonk could result in a disgusted face, or becoming unconscious. Very observant!
The movie is my most favorite Robin Hood adaptation and I found this game to be surprisingly immersive, it's this immersiveness that to me made it a fun adventure game. Entertaining review btw
Thanks very much! I really enjoyed how much of a walk through the movie it was. I wish more movie-based games did this sort of thing.
"Like Chuck Norris and David Hasselhoff" I'm still laughing hahaha. And then the horse segment. This game is so ridiculous. And full of... passion. :D Thank you again for a great review and so many chuckles and smiles.
Passion overload... seriously! Thanks for the sweet comment and for watching, as always!
Thank you for revisiting these classic gems with such a personal flair for hilarity!
This game made me laugh out loud a lot. And thanks :) I'm glad you're enjoying the videos.
It's wonderful to see a game that respects the source material. Thank you for sharing this. 🧡💛💚💙💜
My pleasure! Hopefully it'll help to dispel some of the negative feelings around movie-based games. Not all of them are bad!
How did I miss this review? You did a very good job on it.
Thanks very much!
Duh.
"These and many other little sidequests were stuffed into a movie plot that already had a ton of great things going for it."
The truth is, it's actually the other way around.
Yes! There were several times where I went to walk around something from the top and couldn't get by. It's so funny!
I appreciate this sentiment very much!
It is really impressive how many units are on the same screen in this game for a NES title. Like, really impressive
I can't believe you tried to rob that guy at the end.
In an RPG, nobody is safe.
I loved Robin Good prince of thieves. Saw it on the theater in 2nd grade. I always liked this game too, especially how the outlaws forest hideout grows over time.
The forest hideout changing is a very nice touch! I watched this movie a lot as a kid, and the few times I've seen it again as an adult, I had fun!
@@hungrygoriya I enjoyed the video. Thanks for the reply.
Love the chuckle during the ending kiss
I laughed to tears watching that ending three separate times that night. It was so ridiculous :D
Little Jon's staff was OP indeed. It makes the giant boar boss fight a total non-issue
In that fight I surprisingly still got hit a lot, but at least I didn't die!
This is EXACTLY how I remembered feeling when I beat Little John and got his quarterstaff way back in the day
Invincible! Powerful! I know, right? Until the bow and arrow folks get after you... haha
english person here: we were all suffering malnutrition and dysentery, so we had to know how to jump out of the way in a hurry!
I rented this when I was a kid and fell in love with it. Such a great game.
I agree! I would've loved this as a kid I think... the soundtrack totally swept me off my feet too. I love the medieval music, and there's a surprising variety here.
I'm rolling in laughter on that ending 🤣🤣🤣
You know, I played this game a few months ago and I'm STILL laughing. Too funny :D
I played the hell out of robin hood prince of thieves when i was young, i think its a hidden gem, i still play it every now and then
I still would have if my Nintendo 1 worked. I still play SNES games.
Loved this game on GB and beaten too. The game really follows the movie closely and I loved the movie! Just got for NES it should come within a few days, can't wait to play it!
Yeah it's a lot of fun! As long as you don't mind the occasional detour from the main movie plot, it's great story-wise. Enjoy!
@@hungrygoriya,
nothing wrong with some detours,
it would be pretty boring if it was just doing the same things in the movie.
@@CurlyFromTheSwirly Yeah totally! I didn't mind them taking a few liberties here and there.
Reminds me a bit of Willow, just with the graphics and being a movie tie-in with RPG elements.
Right right... I can't wait to play Willow actually. The music in that game and the graphics are so wonderful.
I don't want to live in a world where kissing hurts, haha
I remember I rented this one weekend and the farthest I got was fighting Little John, one time. I always wanted to see more of it, thanks.
My pleasure! I enjoyed this one a lot!
This is a great channel, glad I discovered it.
Thanks very much for stopping by! I appreciate it!
I remember loving this game as a child.
I think I really would've liked it if I had it as a kid too!
@@hungrygoriya The side "fighting" sequences were the biggest downfall of the game imho. Glad you were able to overcome them though!
@@JeffreyOsb They definitely felt the most random to me... hardest to predict by a long shot!
Wow we watched this movie dozens of times as kids, never knew there was a game - would have definitely gotten frustrated by the high degree of difficulty in this game and the lack of saves! Cool video :)
I was also pleasantly surprised about the game! With a bit of practice it's definitely manageable as hard as it looks at a glance.
In that ending cutscene, Robin looks like Roland Orzabal from Tears For Fears, specifically in the "Head Over Heels" video.
It's totally the hair!
Hilarious review, Friar Tuck's face is pure nightmare fuel XD
That game ending scene made me cry laughing and I still think back on this game very fondly. It is such a funny experience.
Well done! This one gets recommended to me a lot but it sounds like I'll need to muster up some patience before I try it out. Nice review as always!
Thank you, thank you! I hope you enjoy it when you play it... it was a great adventure all said and done, despite some of the rougher patches.
Yeah, I could see that. There are a lot of slow spots, especially in the middle of the game. I could see getting to that point and walking away.
one of my childhood games, since we had so few games back then.
When I found the game in storage when I got into high school and played/beat it again for the 100th time, I realized why. lol
but yeah, the bo staff is a cheat code when you first get it.
I can't remember now, but I just whacked people with the staff, haha
always loved this game. and it has one of my fave NES soundtracks
The music's really good! And I enjoyed the different game modes too, except the one-on-one fighting. That just hurts my feelings because I can't seem to get an edge without putting someone up on a table haha
Another great video HG. I think I’ve seen an emote of that ending somewhere, i can’t quite remember where.
You bet :D
That ending is pretty steamy stuff!
So silly. I laugh about that regularly still... I don't think I'll ever stop!
@Boco Corwin Air kissing is next level family show material.
@Boco Corwin Oh yes... indeed.
@Boco Corwin >:)
Loved Disney’s version but my favorite is “Men in Tights” 🙃
I think I liked Men in Tights when I was younger, but I don't now even a little bit...
I don’t think I’d spent any time with this game before, it’s got the jack I usually enjoy from NES.
Great review, HG!
Hopefully it'll be coming to your stream some day when you have some time to sit down with something longer and not so speedy :) And thanks for taking the time!
: ) love your voice in these reviews. Love the reviews too Hungry! : )
Thanks very much!
Great! Added it to my ever growing wish list
Right on! It's good fun once you actually get a feel for what's coming at you.
Very soothing voice!
Hey thanks!
Those soulless eyes are freaking terrifying! We kids of the 90's went through some true horror! Good thing we all came out tough as nails, eh? lol
Of course they kissed at the end. The 6 inches of space between them is the room we are supposed to leave for jessus.
But they're married!!
I loved this game. I was expecting a shoutout to the music! I still hum the inventory screen music to myself!
I adored the music in this one... it wasn't Prince of Thieves-related but it was still very fitting.
@@hungrygoriya I did a little looking and found that the music was done by Paul Webb who also did many many other great retro titles, including Doom (SNES) ! Lots of adaptations too
@@frankyfraaank WOW hahaha yep... sounds about right!
“You may kiss the bride.”
Robin: *slams his mullet into her*
That ending will always be funny to me, hahaha
Anyway,
Fun vid, as usual.
@@davebladegun3009 You need the video to be fuzzy like your memory! :)
The melee fights where your AI partners run in actually sound super cool, shame it doesn't quite work out in practice.
I found giving them some distance attack options was the only way they didn't get totally wrecked in those battles. Mileage may vary!
Robin performs the traditional wedding headbutt on his beautiful new bride.

The second entry into The Legend of Zelda series is an action role-playing game. You also have lives in that game.
True, but it also had a battery save so you could come back to your progress later. That said, it's also a much longer game!
Strongly recommend The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) with Errol Flynn... very fun and entertaining 🤺
Oh yeah? I can't say I've seen that iteration of the character before. That sounds like fun!

A good way to beat the 1st boss. Jump up onto the table and jump over him. Back him up against the table and hit him with the sword. Try to stand just out of reach of his battle axe.
Yeah! Forcing the opponents to the high ground and hitting them in the ankles works really well!
Great review!

I love how everyone explodes when they are defeated
Yes, and you get to see their body parts fly too... nice and gruesome!
I watched a pal play through this today, and he made it nearly all the way through on his first try. I was very impressed!
@@hungrygoriya That is impressive! I wonder if it was really his first try lol. Perhaps he watched some let's plays beforehand?
@@skins4thewin Knowing him, I doubt he watched anything beforehand. He's been playing games for a very long time and he streams everything live, so his reactions are genuine! He does reviews here on UA-cam as well and I really like his channel. If you're looking for more NES/SNES reviews, check out Quwebs!
@@hungrygoriya Thanks, I'll do that.
The mystery of childhood was a skeleton in the well in the middle of the game - it was impossible to kill him (I think?). He was the same at the end of the game, but you could kill him with a special dagger.
Oh really? I don't remember running into him but I must have... did you manage to kick his butt when you played then, or did you learn this later on?
These HUTS are looking pretty good! hahaha
Oh man, this is one of many NES games that I acknowledge is not "great" (to be diplomatic), yet I enjoy it anyways! Great (fair) review.
Yeah it's not like a mindblowing experience or anything, but it's fun for what it is.
Awesome game!
One of the most adult themed games on the system too. I think Nintendo gave them a pass as it was based on a movie and bound to be a success.
That's an interesting piece of trivia!
@@hungrygoriya I must specify that it's mere speculation. Would make a lot of sense though.
the player info screen: 👁👄👁
Hahaha yep!
This actually looks pretty neat for a huge Nes fan like me. Not sure if I'd have the patience though.
It's honestly not bad. I think it took me about 8 hours of playing (on stream, talking to chatters the entire time) to get through the game? If you're used to NES games, I doubt you'll struggle too much with it.
@@hungrygoriya I have it but admittedly never gave it much of a chance but will do after watching your video.
Absolutely! Save states would be a true blessing in a game like this!
I love the Robin of Sherwood series from the 80ies. Have you seen it? It was a real favourite in our household. I was allowed to stay up. :)
I haven't seen it before! I was really young in the 80s so I wouldn't have seen it when it was first airing.
After I got into the swing of it and the game had no more surprises to throw at me like the horse sections, I found the game quite easy too.
Great review. Rented this as a kid and I was fairly disappointed. That kiss at the end was incredible. Where was 8 bit Sean Connery though?
They do show him, but he looks more like a robust Legolas than Sean Connery! I'm still always surprised to see him at the end of the movie... it's such a strange cameo.
Thanks very much! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
@@hungrygoriya Connery played Robin Hood in the 1976 version of the film:)
@@ihaveallthecoins2785 WHAT! I haven't seen that one... that makes total sense though! I need to go check out some scenes with him... this will make my Robin Hood love ever more complete.
I can't tell if I am in love or hate the art especially the town stuff. Almost seems too slanted like everything's gonna fall over
The perspective definitely did take some getting used to!
Call me a freak but I love this game
We are both freaks then... I enjoyed it a lot!
You found a marion! Im glad i nudged you and ren into playing this.
@@hungrygoriya Awesome x)
I really look forward to that
Robin Hood was one of those games that looked awesome...while I was reading about in Nintendo Power. I'm kind of glad I ended up never actually playing it until emulation was a thing and I didn't spend any real money on it.
I think it has a lot of charm to it, but it's far from the very best game I've ever played. I still enjoyed my time with it though!
I actually love this game so much. I play it regularly. Send help plz.
It's a great game... I don't blame you!
That might exist, but I haven't personally experienced anything like that.
