How far back are we talking? Because I may or may not have to hard disagree with you. Skyrim came out in 2011, and later had a mod created to manually sculpt your character's face to beautify it (extreme customization with brush tools and such). That engine is nearly 13 years old. Final Fantasy X/X-2's main heroines weren't unattractive, either, and those games came out in 01 and 03, they changed the faces of all PCs for the HD re-release while blaming the emotion engine of the PS2 (modders fixed them). Bayonetta was 09, and not to long after the latest release people tried to say she's a queer icon. Etcetera, you get the point. They don't care about the models, they just hate the straight white male gaze, and they make no attempt to hide that hatred.

Normally id be more on board with this, but if you look at the game Control in its early development its vastly different to how it eventually looked. However there does seem to be an increasing trend of less feminine characters in game's, (with the exception of Eve most recently although the models figure was replicated but eves face was made in-house) I can't say I was ever particularly impressed buy the character model for Mary Jane, despite the fact the actress was very easy on the eyes. The same can be said for the new upcoming Star Wars Outlaws game as well.
