The switch from Corpse Party PC-98 section to Musume gave me whiplash Great video overall, its really interesting seeing you cover the original iteration of a series
Honestly, how Musume handled Miyu was a bit upsetting. I never expect anyone outside of the core five to survive, but she basically died three chapters in. Also, thanks again for the video. Really chill vibes.
It's so unfair and gross what happens to her too. It's in such terrible taste and the underlying queerphobia is so painful, especially when she is such a sweet character.
I don’t blame the author if they wanted to make an erotic manga, even if some of the themes are a little… unsettling, but if you look at it as an independent work, isn’t it somewhat cheap to incorporate it to an already known and loved story that wasn’t erotic in nature?
I'm not one to judge authorial intent from the concepts they use in their work, but with how prevalent "fanservice" concepts is in the original, the existence of this manga, and how much more was added in bloodcovered, while the average person would find it too subtle to really notice, there was probably a little more ero intent than we realize.
Memories of fear mention! Really underrated fan translation group. I’m glad they’re living their own lives now. They always picked up some really unique titles.
While I don't think it goes as far as your suggestion, the fan-game Corpse Party D2: Depths of Despair, the dead characters from Ending D-2 actually become hostile spirits in Heavenly Host if I recall. (not played it myself yet.) It is an interesting idea, shame it's buried as the ending to a manga that not many people would want to read. (and therefore not explored since the story is basically already over when it happens.)
That's correct. It also retcons the five added characters from _BloodCovered_ into the PC98 timeline as well, borrowing a few themes and plot devices from _Book of Shadows_ in order to seamlessly bring it all together. It's short, and a little weak on the puzzles and exploration that make the JRPG-style games fun, being really just an excuse for the writer to air out all his issues with PC98 Ayumi-but it nails the characters and atmosphere of the more VN-style entries in the official series.
Decent job kept me invested rare to see anyone bring up The PC 98 version usually it's just talking about the PSP remake and the downhill trend of the series afterwards also have to give props on the manga fanservice section straight to the point without preaching which most other channels would do

One of the alternate endings for PSP Corpse Party (I believe it’s if you fail to escape before all of the chimes) has Yuki become the next Sachiko, so there’s definitely precedent for an alternate Sachiko. I think your idea for Blood Drive would have been interesting. Great video!
Calling that fanservice is significantly downplaying what it is tbh Edit for clarity: I'm saying the artist included it in his work because he thinks it's hot. When it's minors, it's not fan service: it's lolicon. It's a little disingenuous as a content creator to say it's something less than it is lol

Yeah, his was a fairly good neutral description of the more contested elements of the works discussed. Unfortunately, it makes it more annoying to see people bashing Lexa's phrasing, because they can't deal with deeper and darker themes in a horror work of all things.

I’m so happy I found your channel. I love the Corpse Party franchise but I haven’t played the games, just lets plays of Blood covered. I appreciate you actually going in depth with the franchise and explaining everything!!! Can’t wait for the next video!!
I had not really heard much about Corpse Party other than (I think) an anime adaptation while I was in 5th-8th grade. Safe to say I was very unprepared for the manga. Other than that thank you for being a new favorite long form content youtuber, I really enjoyed your videos on the School Days Series. GREAT WORK CANT WAIT TO SEE MORE
Yeah Musume is infamous for being FAR more horny than the games. I hadn't actually read it myself and I was baffled at how weirdly horny it constantly got in the video.
The manga definitely makes me feel uncomfortable but I feel the fan service isn't warranted. Like it should be used to unsettle not kill the tension. Regardless thanks for making this vid and looking forward to the next one 😃
Corpse Party was something I got into when I was way too young and now this recent resurgence almost 10 years after the fact is genuinely wild to me but revisiting this series with a new lens and developed frontal lobe all I can say is--holy crap it fell OFF after blood covered but unfortunately I WILL be seated for the new project and continuing to act like I never saw the manga ALTHOUGH I haven't read it in years, aside from the weird parts Another Child was actually not that bad and I was actually really invested.
I think it's interesting Corpse Party Musume never got officially translated to English since it actually was for my country: It's officially translated for Brazilian Portuguese and I own a copy. Only two Corpse Party titles officially reached my country: Musume and Another Child. They promised us to release Book of Shadows (even though we still don't have Blood Covered) years ago and they never updated us with anything related to the title yet.
On one hand in regards to musume: Yaaay! Almost decent transgender rep! On the flip side- Eugh… burying her within 3 minutes and her only appearance is in a fetish manga… I have so many complicated feelings towards the story ideas presented in that version- although adapting it into a potential different version of blood drive was a fun thought experiment.
Dude you put so much effort into these vids, I remember I got a few chapters into musume before dropping it so I’m glad to see how it ends and those extra chapters sounds genuinely interesting if you could avoid all the fanservice. Since I’ve only played the DS remake of the game I’m really interested in the 98 version, the smaller cast actually feels more natural to me I guess? Because I know of where the female lead I guess it feel like they just added more characters so they could die? Either way these videos are boss and requires SO much time! Nice work 👍
I just first and foremost wanted to say before I clock in and listen to this that Corpse Party is why I'm too scared to play horror games now because as a teen I played it and ended up having a sleep paralysis dream about the tongueless ghost child that paralyzes you on sight and buries you alive
Great analysis! I wonder if the eroticism of the manga was a new intent, or if the tools of the original game were simply too limited. Mixing horror and eroticism is definitely a common style, and fits a certain idea of Sachiko's revenge. I like how the manga has dead ends for everyone even after escaping.
Yep, those themes are not a coincidence. I went down a rabbit hole looking at Kedwin’s old homepage on the Wayback Machine and his old art was afaik all loli (though I’m sure part of that was an artistic limitation). Like in the fighting game Virgin Queen and it’s sequel, where all the girls are children (with ages listed), as well as a bunch of his OCs. Even the covers of the original mobile releases of Blood Covered for phones were the girlies getting attacked with their skirts flipped up. Pretty sure the urination thing even predated Corpse-Party as well, but it’s been a few years so don’t trust me on that. FWIW, while this was way offensive to the average Japanese person at the time, it was very normalised in the otaku PC gaming culture of the time. Not that it’s okay, but it’s unfortunately a bigger problem than just Corpse-Party.
@theMoporter Thank you for the information! Though a creator may do things differently spontaneously, it does make sense if they are known for it and can be part of fans' expectations. It's not really my cup of tea when combined with horror, but I have no problem with it within fiction.
as gross and personally not my thing as musume is, it's almost refreshing that you didn't blow it out of proportion as some less-talented anime youtubers would've done.
I was told to stay away from the manga (the one that you did a breakdown of in the video) and. Yeah, maybe it's better I did. That sounds too much for me. On a lighter, better note, the original game sounded pretty cool! I was only familiar with Blood Covered and onwards, so seeing where things came from was neat
"Fanservice" aka the most horrendous things done to underage characters just so it can be sexualized. I'm so tired of the "Japan being Japan" excuse because it just downplays horrible shit in the media like this
@@kanana2349 besides the boys (since there’s 3 and they all have distinct characteristics), the girls besides the one on the far right are very generic looking. The designs leave much to be desired.
your take on blood drive sounds WAY more better then what we got besides that, wtf was that manga i get it some of the creator taste but bruh at least miyu was cool and some version of her make into the official games.
The only reason I remember musume at all was because yuka got cheap shotted at the end of the manga. And i was very sour about that and I still am to this day.
Can someone please explain to me the weird thing with Japan and sibling romance? It's strangely common in Japanese media, and maybe even weirder if often played completely straight like it isn't unusual at all.
Centuries before Freud, east Asian artists and scholars had already developed *some* idea of what modern psychologists might term "stages of development" with regards to individual sexuality-and, like Freud, they observed that children typically have very little frame of reference for complex social relations outside their own families, which can sometimes to some awkward feelings those kids must then grow out of. The idea then follows that *a bit* of an Elektra Complex makes a female character (or a bit of an Œdipal Complex for a male character) come off as more innocent and childlike-a major sticking point for the Yuka character in particular, who, despite being the age of a western high schooler, is meant to invoke the loli archetype. It's also not something that Japanese authors universally depict as a positive thing. You'll notice the characters who show these maladaptive modes of attraction typically show other signs of stunted or delayed sexual or social development (Yuka, for example, is explicitly described as an immature ‘Daddy's little princess’ type), and that it's used just as often for awkward/cringe comedy as it is for unironic cute appeal.
Ngl i originally fell asleep halfway through watching this video lmao glad I'm rewatching it again. 😅 Tho you've made me interested in the series when you streamed it years ago i think im glad i didnt learning about that manga lol
didn't know the manga was that crazy a THROAT GUIDE! LMAO i miss old japan craziness still so interesting a franchise, it really is the Street Fighter of horror with all these rereleases
Sir! Im wearing headphones and did not appreciate that knocking! Still a great video lol. I was always a little bit interested in corpse party since it used to be everywhere but i never played the games. The horror was interesting but I was always turned off by the fan service and lewdness of the young girls (I've been in the trenches since I was a preteen but I really can't stand it at this point.) so thanks for dredging through the manga and tell the story for peeps like me.
Okay, so i know this going to sound REALLY nitpicky, but it’s been driving me a little bonkers and i can't hold it in anymore. I will say preemptively that I'm not dissing you or trying to make you feel bad; I'd want this pointed out to me if i made content. I've noticed that in your scripts (across multiple videos), two things are repeated a lot: One is that you use the word "certain" a lot, such as "a certain girl," "a certain charm," etc. I understand the desire for mysterious emphasis, but maybe mix it up with some synonyms for "certain"? The second is a very, very common sentence structure you use, which is "[dependent clause], [independent clause]", with the dependent clause often including an -ing verb, the latter of which is equally as commonly used as the first word of the sentence. Naturally, some sentences are just gonna be this way, because it's common English and there isn't inherently wrong with using it, but you use this structure a LOT, even back to back (to back). (One noticeable segment starts at 1:21:10 when Sachiko is first giving her backstory to Yoshiki and Ayumi.) This needs mixing up too imo, with the meaning of the sentence able to properly be conveyed even if you did "[independent clause], [independent clause]", or "[independent clause], [dependent clause]". Again, this is solely for constructive purposes; I greatly enjoy your content.
Out of all of Corpse Party, only like the PC-98 game (to the point that I got hyperfixated and even considered porting it in 2021). Everything else is too over-the-top and it takes away from the themes of the original - primarily, that it is wrong to throw anyone aside for other people’s benefit. It’s a bit off-putting when every other part of the franchise seems to go directly against that. While I like the idea of some of the characters from Musume, it really seems like the real goal was to force Bad End content onto the page, if you catch my drift. The Morishige-ified Yoshiki doesn’t ever have to really grow since he is still a selfish jerk at the end, and Naho could have been replaced with a faceless ghost pretty much the entire time. I like Miyu and her character arc, but we all know she’s obviously just there to be exploitation material, which kinda pulls it down. My sequel idea is that you could have Miyu choose to become the next Sachiko willingly instead of Naomi because she knows her sense of protection is strong enough to hold back the cursed souls, but when her friends have kids and enter high school, she resents it so much that her dark side takes over and it’s up to the new generation to put the school to rest for good 😅 As a side note: I am pretty sure there are multiple unavoidable deaths in future games, but is there a single non-hetero character in the franchise who ISN’T doomed from the start? I really hope that’s a coincidence and not an ideological thing…
I've never played Corpse Party, but this video kind of puts me off it. I'm not interested in fan service, especially not the loli kind. It's just disgusting. I'm also not into incest vibes or piss. Just sounds like stuff I'm not gonna be into.
The actual games (or at least the first one and especially the PC-90 original which lacks the..questiionable at times art) have far less of it. Musume basically doubles down on it to an extreme degree.
I'll be honest, this channel is one of the few that I actively look forward to watching because of all the information present. I find this series to be very interesting, as the ghosts were so omnipotent and cruel. Even the victim ghosts were needlessly cruel, so its interesting to see the direction it's taken, compared to how it started, and how some of its core elements still holds up. I will say, not a fan of the "fan service", imo anime horror tends to fetishize said services, a bit too much. I get that horror in the west, really wasn't any different, especially in the 80's where female actors were basically regulated to literally the same idea of fan service, instead servicing as "eye candy" or whatever degenerate term equivalent in the 80's, but the oversexualizing in this anime's case really detracts from horror, due to the tonal shift. Goes from existential dread, to feeling gross for reason besides the horror. I'm also not the type to really complain about that, in other situation/genres, but I really don't like it in horror genres, as it cheapens the experience overall, imo. Besides that, I mean, you can uses psychological horror alongside sexualization, but it's hard to to without it seemingly there just for the express purpose of showing nudity. Themes eluded to, tend to be more horrifying conceptually, as it's your own imagination doing the directors work in narrating the story, as opposed to the director potentially incorrectly showing an agreeable perspective on what makes a scene horrifying. I personally prefer a cerebral horror that is defined by one's imagination of what is happening, as opposed to being shown whats happening. I like horror/thrillers like Se7en, even though its portrayal with Kevin Spacey may be more accurate to that character than we all could have ever imagined. Great video, gets the brain thinking, which is more than I can say than most of the brain rot I usually watch. 🧠 🗑
The manga is. Something. I feel saying it’s fan service heavily downplays on how disturbing it is, since it contains loli nsfw, implied incest, and non consensual stuff
Spoilers for 98 version you’ve been warned Personally I like the 98 version you truly feel sorry for sachiko San knowing she had no one in her life to help her 😢
Yuka is the worst character in the game. She’s 14 years old, but acts like a 5 year old. Ya know what, Sailor Moon has girls that are 14 years old. But they never said they need to potty. Her deaths in both the fetish manga, and anime are by far the best parts. The manga was really bad and I hate how much of….’that’ it had(I’m an anime/manga nerd, but I couldn’t get passed those ‘types’ of fetishes….) The ending with Satoshi and Yuka was very disgusting…not the blood if you know what I mean. ….But Japan is Japan, and I still love it. Just not that….
I'll be honest i'm pretty desensitized to "Japan being Japan" I can get over most fanservice if the story is good especially in horror, buuuut I find trying to mix too much blatant fanservice with horror makes both worse, I just get ripped out of the story when I see really fan-servicey parts.

Thrusting Power is undefeated. 😂
Thanks for the vid Lexa!
The manga definitely makes me feel uncomfortable but I feel the fan service isn't warranted. Like it should be used to unsettle not kill the tension.
Regardless thanks for making this vid and looking forward to the next one 😃
Oh my god. Someone talking about CORPSE-PARTY (PC98). This literally never happens
1:36:00 oh jeez lexa, the knocking absolutely terrified me. i hate hearing that sound e
jffect when im using headphones
The way you explain all of these events are sooo good! Please do something on King’s Game!
On one hand in regards to musume:
Yaaay! Almost decent transgender rep!
On the flip side-
Eugh… burying her within 3 minutes and her only appearance is in a fetish manga…
I have so many complicated feelings towards the story ideas presented in that version- although adapting it into a potential different version of blood drive was a fun thought experiment.
trap character, not trans
Every time you post I jump for joy 💕
Dude you put so much effort into these vids, I remember I got a few chapters into musume before dropping it so I’m glad to see how it ends and those extra chapters sounds genuinely interesting if you could avoid all the fanservice. Since I’ve only played the DS remake of the game I’m really interested in the 98 version, the smaller cast actually feels more natural to me I guess? Because I know of where the female lead I guess it feel like they just added more characters so they could die? Either way these videos are boss and requires SO much time! Nice work 👍
Huh, not sure why I wasn't subscribed to you, despite having watched your videos recently, but now I am.
I just first and foremost wanted to say before I clock in and listen to this that Corpse Party is why I'm too scared to play horror games now because as a teen I played it and ended up having a sleep paralysis dream about the tongueless ghost child that paralyzes you on sight and buries you alive
💀 The exact same thing happened to me (except I watched lets play; Never built up the courage to actually play)
That Ryou boy had it out for EVERYBODY! 😂😂😂 Locked eyes with him? Oh well! He'd whoop his ass, then put him in the dirt. Goddamn! 😂😂😂
Another Classic by Lexa&!
I had no idea the series was this old
Great analysis!
MY GOAT UPLOADED IM SNOOZING TO PEAK RN
Cant wait to watch!
as gross and personally not my thing as musume is, it's almost refreshing that you didn't blow it out of proportion as some less-talented anime youtubers would've done.
Yes more Corpse Party!
I'm so tired of the "Japan being Japan" excuse because it just downplays horrible shit in the media like this
Oh I love your videos.
1:34 such an iconic cast of characters, I can't distinguish them from one another. XD
then u must be blind. XD

Seiko, Naomi, and Ayumi are pretty. The hell you talking about? 😂
your take on blood drive sounds WAY more better then what we got besides that, wtf was that manga i get it some of the creator taste but bruh at least miyu was cool and some version of her make into the official games.
Thrusting Power. 😂
Nice Video,
Keep it.

Ngl i originally fell asleep halfway through watching this video lmao glad I'm rewatching it again. 😅 Tho you've made me interested in the series when you streamed it years ago i think im glad i didnt learning about that manga lol
didn't know the manga was that crazy
a THROAT GUIDE! LMAO i miss old japan craziness
still so interesting a franchise, it really is the Street Fighter of horror with all these rereleases
Sir! Im wearing headphones and did not appreciate that knocking!
Still a great video lol. I was always a little bit interested in corpse party since it used to be everywhere but i never played the games. The horror was interesting but I was always turned off by the fan service and lewdness of the young girls (I've been in the trenches since I was a preteen but I really can't stand it at this point.) so thanks for dredging through the manga and tell the story for peeps like me.
ngl I was hoping the knocking would get someone lol
Okay, so i know this going to sound REALLY nitpicky, but it’s been driving me a little bonkers and i can't hold it in anymore.
I will say preemptively that I'm not dissing you or trying to make you feel bad; I'd want this pointed out to me if i made content.
I've noticed that in your scripts (across multiple videos), two things are repeated a lot:
One is that you use the word "certain" a lot, such as "a certain girl," "a certain charm," etc.
(One noticeable segment starts at 1:21:10 when Sachiko is first giving her backstory to Yoshiki and Ayumi.)
This needs mixing up too imo, with the meaning of the sentence able to properly be conveyed even if you did "[independent clause], [independent clause]", or "[independent clause], [dependent clause]".
Again, this is solely for constructive purposes; I greatly enjoy your content.
As someone who avoids anime because of the fanservice that manga spunds heinous😂 the original game sounds really cool though
1:38:20 I thought this was going in a more…Antichrist direction 😅
My sequel idea is that you could have Miyu choose to become the next Sachiko willingly instead of Naomi because she knows her sense of protection is strong enough to hold back the cursed souls, but when her friends have kids and enter high school, she resents it so much that her dark side takes over and it’s up to the new generation to put the school to rest for good 😅
As a side note: I am pretty sure there are multiple unavoidable deaths in future games, but is there a single non-hetero character in the franchise who ISN’T doomed from the start? I really hope that’s a coincidence and not an ideological thing…
Zero was...an interesting entry.
Could you do a video on the “corpse party: another child” manga?
I've never played Corpse Party, but this video kind of puts me off it. I'm not interested in fan service, especially not the loli kind. It's just disgusting. I'm also not into incest vibes or piss. Just sounds like stuff I'm not gonna be into.
The actual games (or at least the first one and especially the PC-90 original which lacks the..questiionable at times art) have far less of it.
Musume basically doubles down on it to an extreme degree.
@@samz8691 I feel that after rebuild the series only went downhill(excluding art I guess)
Something. I feel saying it’s fan service heavily downplays on how disturbing it is, since it contains loli nsfw, implied incest, and non consensual stuff
the corpse party manga?
@ yeah

Spoilers for 98 version you’ve been warned
Personally I like the 98 version you truly feel sorry for sachiko San knowing she had no one in her life to help her 😢
i love video games!!
1:02:18 they're just a trap character, they aren't trans
Sup
I'll be honest i'm pretty desensitized to "Japan being Japan" I can get over most fanservice if the story is good especially in horror, buuuut I find trying to mix too much blatant fanservice with horror makes both worse, I just get ripped out of the story when I see really fan-servicey parts.
You should do danganronpa
Nah bro I'm good on loli.
