Is development destroying Uttarakhand? | Ground Report
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 сер 2024
- Floods, landslides, forest fires, glacier bursts. #Uttarakhand has suffered a series of devastating #naturaldisasters over the last decade. But are they really natural disasters or is there a human hand involved? Is the #Himalayan state paying a heavy price for a development model that has scant regard for local environmental and ecological conditions? The plans to 'develop' #Sukhatal and #Sattal in #Nainital have only made these questions more urgent.
Noman Siddiqui takes a look at what's happening and what it entails.

Where the IT is raiding the NL office, meanwhile the NL is doing good ground reporting. Keep going NL 🙏
Hatsoff news laundry, you guys are setting an example of courage. No matter anybody recognizes this or not but your team will always remember this day. This is your second video since morning in the middle of the IT raid.
I would love to dedicate this famous lines for you.
"Tum jise dafnane chalte thee afsoos tumhe smaj na aaya k vo beej hai"
And I believe your organization will grow like a beautiful tree giving fruits, shade and oxygen to democracy.
Excellent reporting on the issues that truly matters . Do all the unnecessary development that you want but don't cry when nature pushes back and correct it's own course .
Respect for newslaundry........This IT raid/survey.....shows the cowardice and insecurity of the dictatorial type bjp government
Uttrakhand is highly eco sensitive seismic active region. Today 4.6 earthquake happened in joshimath. If sustainable development is not done it would be an apolcalypse
waise uttrkhand sunder hain waha park banaa rahaa hain . more more trees should be planted
National news channels hindu muslim karne me lagi hai jabki ese ground reports ki jarurat hai. Great work news laundry
abhinandan sir, keep doing what you and your team is doing... We all are with you. You are few of the news media who are keeping the news alive. I feel very sorry to see the condition of today's govt and I feel like i m living in a deplomatic nation. I feel very sorry for Gandhi ji, Bhagat Singh, Nehru Ji, Chandrashekhar Azad, Sarojini Naidu, and many more who fought for this nation and today's govt is so corrupt and cheap that they are misusing their powers to supress anyone who questions govt. God is with you, we are with you
Stay Strong NL💪
I’m in a remote region of Uttarakhand right now and it’s unfortunate how messed up the urban areas are. I’ll say what the geology professor wanted to say: urban Uttarakhand is a shit hole now. Thankfully the remote regions are fantastically beautiful.
Don’t talk about the remote Uttarakhand’s beauty. The tourists will spoil that too.
@@PriyankitaPant accountable govt . tell them why they are doing nothing

I salute NL team. For keeping the true spirit of Journalism. While NL undergoing IT raid and political harassment, still they are doing their best. Thank you NL and keep it up.
Sunder Lal Bahuguna had worked hard to make the people and authorities aware of the disaster out of blind development.
-- thanks for highlighting such issues as well --

I would like to salute you guys for courage to report this issue & also showing such a incredible report, @NOMAN i would like to see more reports like this, there is ray of hope in Indian Journalism when I see people like Noman Siddique.
At 1:00 what the professor says makes it clear why projects worryingly and sadly go ahead without much consultation with experts. Firstly, expertise in multiple domains is required which means that multiple experts need to come on board and give their opinion on the environmental impact of a proposed project. Since the exact environmental impact can never accurately be calculated, expert opinions may differ. While some may ring alarm bells, others from the same domain may take a more lenient view. The govt obviously will go with the lenient view.
The public will never know whether experts who gave the go ahead to a project did so under any kind of compulsion or was it their genuine view on the project's feasibility. The massive issue of rehabilitating local public displaced by developmental projects is also contentious. Developmental projects often affect the development of the displaced population. Rehabilitation suggestions are seldom implemented due to lack of political will and sometimes also due to various impossibilities.
Things may look ideal on paper but the financial cost of implementing all recommendations on rehabilitation may be prohibitive, push the cost of the project up and make it unviable or unattractive to investors, the local population may resist moving to a new location due to various emotional and practical considerations.
I am yet to read or watch a comprehensive view on development vs environmental conservation & human rehabilitation which explains how this narrow ground can be reached.
Three things that comes to my layman mind to reduce natural disasters. One is, limiting the local population in hill states and secondly, limiting the number of hotels and homestays catering to tourists. Thirdly, STRICTLY limiting the number of religious, adventure and nature tourists all year through.
Only a fixed number of people should be welcomed in hilly areas each year. But this is rarely controlled due to the lure of the lucre. Localites themselves don't want their income from tourism to be regulated. so, there is no guarantee that reducing tourist numbers will honestly be done.
The problem of depending on hydel power supply in hill states also leads to the construction of dams, some of them large. This is again tricky as hydel power will be the natural choice for power generation in these areas due to the speed of the rivers flowing through the region. There isn't much flat land or steady sunlight all the year through for solar power panels. Construction of roads in the remote reaches is also difficult and humans have a strange penchant to go and stay even in the remotest of regions. Without continuous power, tourism will not be attractive, education of hill children will suffer and so will any mechanized business or agricultural activity performed by hill people.
Really it is great reporting and brought good news in public domain... Keep on reporting without fear
More power to you NL!!🙌🙌
