  • On November 15, 1969, Kansas City Chiefs QB Len Dawson was informed that his father tragically passed away from a heart attack. Against all odds, Dawson decided to still play in the Chiefs' next game against the New York Jets the following day. Dawson, playing with a heavy heart, had one of the best games of his career, and overcame adversity to throw three touchdown passes and lead the Chiefs to an unbelievable victory. This is the story behind Len Dawson, the 1969 Chiefs, and the most triumphant and heroic game of his storied career

    Another great video about a player going through tragedy. However, while that may have been the most adverse circumstance Len Dawson faced that year, it wouldn’t be his last. Before beating the Vikings in Super Bowl 4 NBC reported his name surfaced on a witness list in the trial of Donald “Dice” Dawson (no relation), a numbers runner from Detroit.

    Great story and I loved the way Jim Marsalis rallied behind Dawson and gave him good advice. I am a Dolphins fan and on Christmas it will be the 50th anniversary of the NFL's longest game won by the Dolphins over the Chiefs but I had and still do respect those Chiefs teams of the late 60s early 70s.

      Yes!....I was in fourth grade and my dad told me that.Then he said something like,"It's going to end up just like last year with Namath.Chiefs will win it."
      But,as it turned out, the report was probably right. Look up the name Daniel " Dice"Dawson, a used car lot owner in who had businesses all over the Midwest.

      Steelers were a struggling A.f.l. Team. Fast forward to the dynasty years and you remind Pittsburgh who they should have drafted in 83. Marino, would have been a phenomenal addition. Steelers were aging? However the Steelers eventually got a Pennsylvania quarterback in Todd Blackledge.

Dawson, Taylor, Lanier, Holub, Tyrer, Bell, Robinson, Thomas etc. Don't forget Mike Livingston who was a big part of the Super Bowl season. He got stuck behind Dawson, but a damn good QB. Ironic how Len Dawson is the greatest QB in AFL history and doesn’t get nearly enough recognition for it while Joe Namath, who became the face of the AFL after SB III, is probably not only the most overrated QB in the history of professional football, but the single most overrated player to boot.

    • @anthonybatulis6516
      @anthonybatulis6516 2 роки тому +4

      Joe led the Jets to a victory in a game that they were 17 point underdogs. It was also the first Superbowl won by an AFL team. Joe is probably a bit overrated but I blame this on the New York media.

    • @denisceballos9745
      @denisceballos9745 2 роки тому +2

      Joe Namath was more than his statistics. If you lived in that era, you remember he was a huge media star - his long hair, white shoes, and bold predictions, changed the game - bringing the NFL into the TV era. He put butts in seats for the NFL. Plus being in NYC which was the media capital, made him a household name. Even my wife knows who Joe Namath was, when he does late night commercials. She wouldn’t know who Lenny Dawson was.

    • @stevenbauer4799
      @stevenbauer4799 2 роки тому +3

      Namath isn't in the hall based on numbers. He is in the hall for bringing the afl recognition and proving the afl was a legit league. Namth also helped bring the nfl those big tv ratings they crave today. And put fans in the seats for werblin-a must in nyc. And after the sb iii win all the afl players who played all of most of the afl years all thanked joe for that win. It wasn't just for joe and the jets, it was for all of the afl players who were laffed at and called inferior by the old guard nfl for nearly 10 years. Including lombardi who urged nfl teams to beat the afl bad. I guess lombardi wasn't smiling anymore after s b's iii and iv. And namath was not overrated and would tear the nfl up under todays pass happy schemes and rules tailored for offense. And joe was so respected players in the '70's when they had a chance to sack him hard on bad knees they let up and took him down soft. Not joe's fault that jets declined in '70's and joe throwing the ball on knees that were deteriorating each games was they only chance they had to win.

    • @stevenbauer4799
      @stevenbauer4799 2 роки тому +2

      @Justin Joseph overrated? terry bradshaw was overrated too and he is in the hall. He would have been archie manning or jim plunkett if he hadn't landed with loaded steelers of the '70's. Some say farve is overrated too. Just a gun slinger that holmgren managed to harness in who made many bone head ill timed picks as well who also in the hall based on longevity numbers and that iron man streak.

    • @justinpettit3432
