Yeah! My kind of metal! Nothing against the "new" metal, but this shit is what I grew up on, and it's my soundtrack to my youth. Priest, Maiden, and even the glam stuff like Crue. Metal Mike is killin' it!
I grew up with bands like Accept, Priest, and Iron Maiden and as much as I like today's metal the riffs of the 80's metal where way more melodic and creative than they are now, Now it's just a lot of drop D chugging with not much else. And every metal band of the 80's were easily distinguishable from each other.
those were the days...when guitar riffs ruled the world...the top albums...the top concerts, Priest, Scorpions, Ozzy, , Accept, Loudness, Saxon.....on and on. I need to get back into it...think of buying me a Jackson RR axe.
What kind of metal have you been listening to that sucks? You must only know mainstream 80s and 70s bands. There are many thrash bands playing with known bands like DRI and municiple waste in this era
Wow, exactly what I was looking for! The OG 80s metal noises I used to listen to. Now I have the means to play this on my new toys and man do I have a blast? :D This video is thick with yummy noises to chew on, thank you very much!
That is THE SOUND I want out of an electric guitar! Scooped sounds great for jamming alone at home or to tracks, but that *honk* and bite you've got going on is where it's at!!!
People who say metal sucks today are just not looking for good metal. Its definitely out there. Especially thrash metal. There is some damn good thrash bands right now.
Excellent lesson. Queensryche also used that power choir with a diminished fifth in the middle, as well as the augmented fifth (take a standard fifth diad, move the fifth up a fret or scoot the root down a fret).
Haha I play Jackson/Marshall too tho your hk is on (got one of those too) Born in 81, married heavy metal in 87 when I first heard appetite for destruction/master of puppets. Still stuck in the glory days.
Great stuff. Just had to mention Accept and how incredible Wolf Hoffman's riffs were (and still are!). Totally different type of music than what is commonly known as "metal," today. Thanks for the memories!
I love Metal Mike! and I love Classic Eighties-Style Metal Guitar because unlike today's Drop Tuning, Classic Eighties-Style Metal Guitar has the guitar in the midrange where it belongs!
Listen up Mike when i start to loose sense of direction in guitar playing i watch one of your presentions and that brings me right back into it. I can' play your stuff yet but man i sure would like to it's awesome. Don't suppose you have the tab for that do you PLEASE.
I saw Metal Mike live. Mike is metal! And he knows how to rock the crowd. Mike.....We need another album!!!!! How about a mix between Crucible and Painmuseum.
I'm 46 so I sorta play like this naturally, it'd be fun if players wove this into the modern rhythmic style as a sort of hybrid .. sorta Djent meets Randy Rhodes ... maybe with some 7 string action!
Alot of this riffs sounds like my music but i like your added notes and variations. I like the Galloping Picking reminds me of IRON MAIDEN so much. Or most 80s Heavy Metal
I think the reason songs & bands were so good then was due mostly to all the money & popularity that a decent band could get if they recorded at least 1 good song & all the competition forced them to record good & catchy music. I don't think the lyrics really mattered as much.
Julian Watraks Also, I'm not Jackson specialist but I don't believe that make King V's with RR style control plates/pick guards. See the black piece of metal on the lower horn?
I think hes got it harder...i prefer the hardrocking styles of tesla dokken, danger danger if 80s style were the subject...he played it bit fast that it sounds like 2000 imitating 80s and that would be power metal in the vein of hammerfall etc.less speed more harmonics and more hooks is the 80s in my opinion..
And might i, good sir, commend your wondrous guitar tone, it is perfect in every way, and would have the most killer tone ever if you would kindly put in some delay, at about 350 milliseconds lol, MAGIC.
I like the chains in the strap, looks really nice, but I think my hair would get in it more than I would like. Would hate to be performing and get stuck in the strap chains.
Metal today sucks compared to metal of the 80's. It was more melodic then. Now, it's nothing but a downtuned atonal sludge-fest on 7 and 8-string guitars. Bands don't know how to write good, catchy riffs anymore.
+6672rock I don't know if you're on the A7X hate bandwagon, but Avenged Sevenfold makes amazing riffs, especially on their most recent "Hail To The King" album. Check out their songs "Shepherd of Fire" "Heretic" "This Means War" and "Coming Home". Seriously though, people who still hate them because of the metalcore probably haven't realized they haven't made anything metalcore since Waking The Fallen
Hi Mike way gear are playing through. I have a 5150111 amp.but no effects or any thing. What can you suggest I can use to get the same kinda tone as you.
Not sure how to explain that but I'd recommend dropping the finger habit unless trying to play flamenco. Anyway skinny more bendable picks are more for strumming chords whereas thicker ones that don't bend are better for more technical things.
"I wanna take you back to a time when Van Halen's publicist and record company paid to feature his amps, guitar's and music brand for two decades". Yeah we noticed that.
Japanese metal continues to be melodic and rely heavily on harmonics using six and seven strings. They've stayed in the 80s, Listen to Loudness people, not every metal band drones and hammers on the E or low b.
Metal mike is real lyfe skwisgar skwisgelf ov dethklok. (It's the accent) wonder where he's from?? I see what he means metal has definitely changed since its invention you don't really hear chords with this full sound anymore. Everything is so tuned down and either complex and riffy or djenty and sludgy. You can really hear all the notes ringing out after the palm muting here somewhere along the lines of trying to be heavier these melodic chords were lost for the most part. When he adds the pinch harmonics or vibrato after these chords you really hear them shine. This has been very interesting, at least to me. Maybe I should try incorporating more notes in my chords like this and put the more musical elements back into my playing... might have to either look up or make up some new chords.
He basically played NWOBHM & Randy Rhoads' derivative style riffs in this video. 1: Iron Maiden 2: Jake E. Lee 3: Rudolf Shenker from Scorpion 4: George Lynch from Dokken 5: Early Queensryche Study Randy Rhoads & you'll nail this style of Metal, but good luck. It's damn hard...Lolll :P
this guy is more metal than the periodic table
that is great!....80's metal was friggin awesome!
lol
My parents are scientists so this is hilarious to me.
Bet he's got more gas, too.

After 3 years did you buy it man? Lol
To me Dokken is the the best example of 80s metal, three perfect metal albums in row.
Agreed! Back for the Attack, Under Lock and Key, and Tooth and Nail are all killer! Breaking the Chains isn't near as good, but still alright.
Thanks for teaching me how to play 80's Metal riffs. I was doing it wrong the whole time, I was accidentally playing 90's Metal riffs! Silly me.
BassbaitGG haha
BassbaitGG hey dude do you know what equipment he used in this video?
A guitar and an amplifier.
@@zikkicharade looks like a Hughes and kettner amp not sure which one

kickass riffs and tone. I grew up on 80s metal with Priest, Maiden, Accept, The Big 4... great time for music.
nice Fight shirt btw
Metal is metal. I don't care what genre or era it's from. I love it all.
the metal today sucks balls the 80's metal and 70's metal are the freaking best
What kind of metal have you been listening to that sucks? You must only know mainstream 80s and 70s bands. There are many thrash bands playing with known bands like DRI and municiple waste in this era

Been playing a lil over a year and thanks to Mike I'm coming up with some killer riffs and having a good time

Havok is my go to new thrash band. those guys fuckin shred

In terms of modern thrash, there is only one band u need to know: Evile
Kent Sands And Havok, Warbringer, Lich King, Condition Critcal....ect

good info I enjoy your lessons Mike
Fuck, that's a sweet RR.
its a King V
Julian Watraks
King V's have symmetric horns, RR's have the top one a bit bigger, sort of like a shark fin.
Yeah right and his has symetric "spikes"
Julian Watraks
Skip to about 6:45 onwards when the camera zooms out and you can see his axe. The top horn is quite clearly larger.

The last riff sounded so awesome slowed down
1:35 Bark at the Moon
Damn you're good at what you do
