The Hostess Club trip does sort of hint at the traditional benders that East Asian workers often end up being dragged into for 'corporate bonding' after work. Coming across the comatose form of a salaryman/office lady face down on the sidewalk or in a subway car sleeping off the effects of imbibing way too much alcohol after a futile attempt to keep pace with the boss is unfortunately common.

Hi! As someone who actually lives in Japan but grew up in the west, I thought I'd provide some clarification regarding the likely reasons why they decided to depict the liver as a typical downtown nightlife district, why hepatocytes are depicted as a hostesses, and how strip clubs and host/hostess bars are different within Japanese culture. Apologies in advance for it being so long. I just thought it'd be interesting to share for people who don't know the context. I also thought it necessary to clarify what hosts/hostesses are so people don't generalize or apply their own culture to a very unique part of modern Japanese culture.
If you're someone who is knowledgeable about Japan's work culture and work life, its quite clear that they are in the body of the stereotype of a salaryman working in, what is known as a "black company" (It's even referenced in the title of the series). Black companies take advantage of their workers by forcing them to work overtime without pay pretty much daily, by not giving them any benefits, emotionally and mentally abusing the staff, and overall doing shady, if not outright illegal, things in the workplace that threatens their workers. It's essentially a corporate version of being stuck in an abusive relationship. Part of the stereotype is that these people will, after working from morning until often past midnight, choose to destress by going straight to the downtown area, which is built around drinking. They're often 1 long stretch of different types of bars, and pachinko parlors, with the occasional strip club (but those are usually found in modern day versions of red light districts, which are often close to but separate from these downtown areas). So it makes sense that the liver of a black company worker is modeled after such an area considering that is most likely where he is imbibing the alcohol that the liver is detoxifying out of the blood.
The other link is that the liver is an organ meant to detox the body and blood. So it makes sense that the hepatocytes are portrayed as hostesses, whose job is to help their customers destress/detox after an insanely grueling day of work. So it makes sense within the context of Japanese culture, corporate culture in particular, to have them portrayed as hostesses. It both provides context for not just what the cells' roles are, but for the person whose body they are a part of. It's also much more appealing, and easier to understand for a typical Japanese viewer than a waste treatment plant, which most people don't really have any understanding of either.
I'll try to end this already long-winded comment as quick as I can, but I do think it's important to understand the differences between hostess clubs/bars and strip clubs within the context of Japanese culture, rather than viewing it through the lens of your own to properly pay respects to said culture. First, I want to make it clear that there is nothing innately wrong with either occupation, and people who judge hostesses and/or strippers need to get over themselves; people are often looked down on for having these types of jobs in and out of Japan, sadly. Now they are both jobs that are meant to allow customers to release stress. The major difference is in how they do it. Strippers (who also exist in Japan and are classified as different from hostesses here) do so by selling voyeurism and sexuality. Hostesses, on the other hand, do it by selling companionship. Their job is mainly to listen to the complaints and gripes of their customers, or just talk about random topics, while pouring them drinks and casually advertising more expensive alcohols. The main reason people go to them is because they are able to give people, who are very devoid of and in need of companionship, a sense of being needed and a sense of being taken care of at the same time; they can feel like they actually matter to someone for an allotted amount of time.
Of course that isn't to say they don't dress to be sexy. the vast majority do, as to cater to the preferences of their target demographics. However, that is not their selling point, and they never take their clothes off. If you were to call a hostess a stripper for their clothing, then pretty much every woman in their twenties at a club, rave, or music festival would then be a stripper in your eyes.
The Kupffer cell is obviously the exception. Her design clearly matches with western images of strippers, however there is also more Japanese context to consider here. I believe she is meant to be seen as a stripper, but even more than that a "dancer". I put "dancer" in quotes because in modern Japanese culture the belly dancer aesthetic is linked to fictional shamanistic religious rituals/ceremonies. You'll often see a "dancer" class in JRPGs or characters with similar aesthetics and roles in manga, anime, and light novels as well, and they are almost ALWAYS in Middle Eastern belly dancer garb. And considering how they depicted the Kupffer cell doing its job, I think its quite clear they were playing on that cultural perspective of the belly dancer aesthetic.

Thank you. Quick question though, when you say people sell companionship, is it the same as people buying someone to be their sister or mother

    • @DerklyLiu
      @DerklyLiu 3 роки тому +39

@@chrono-glitchwaterlily8776 its a similar concept but quite different. the pretending to be a family member is often more in a private setting, where the person goes to the client's home or they spend the day out. its much more free form, whereas hostesses and hosts can only be accessed within the clubs/bars they work at. The type of companionship is also slightly different since one is familial and the other is more like having a super flirty friend you go to vent to. The other is that hosts and hostesses are ultimately salesmen so they actively try to sell drinks by making sure your glass is full or suggesting other drinks.
TLDR: Visiting hosts and hostesses is companionship that comes with an ego rub and alcohol, while hiring fake family is seeking out nostalgic familial bonds you cant get anymore.
Also some people hire fake family for events like weddings or funerals to make it seem like they are doing better socially, than they are, or if they had falling outs with their real family and don't want the other guests to assume things or question why their family isn't there.

The liver is portrayed as a red light district basically, an adult-oriented street where people go to unwind after a long day of work. They typically contain the cities bars, gambling dens, and where the red blood cells go, a hostess club. A hostess club is basically a custom exclusive to Japan. They are popular with overstressed workers, so it makes sense that the red blood cells would go to a similar place. The women don't strip in them, it's basically paying for the company of a woman.

I love how Black has themes and stuff.
It's just like how the cells in Black work like in a black company to deal with their Body working in a black company; the cells are drug along by their boss to take a break and recoup from the alcohol with a nice mug of ADH, that their Body probably drank because he was drug along to a hostess club by their boss for heavy recreational drinking

It’s a little more complicated, but the main cause of my father’s death was cirrhosis of the liver.
Further Explanations: He was on a lot of medications for it, but we were not told by the liver specialist that the medication could also affect the kidneys, resulting in a build-up of ammonia, which effected his brain, and this combination ultimately killed him.

Part of Japanese corporate culture are after-work drinking parties called _nomikai_ as well as less formal outings with one's boss or other co-workers. It's both a way of blowing off steam and team-building via "nominication," a portmanteau of _nomu_ (drinking) and "communication." Normally you would go to a bar, restaurant, or _izakaya_ (basically a Japanese pub). But if this body is the Black company and the Red Blood Cells are the salarymen, it's not so surprising their cringe-y supervisor chose to take them somewhere more uhhh *risqué* like a hostess club.
Also FYI there are host clubs in Japan where good-looking men tend to their clients, so I imagine that's where the Macrophages and Neutrophils hang out after a hard day of phagocytosing pathogens.

So something I think that's worth mentioning. The use of the word "pissed" in British and American English actually isn't consistent. In the UK it means drunk, in the US it means angry. I assume that some cross usage happens in both countries but that's the primary usage. Here in Australia I think it gets used both ways fairly regularly.

This universe has a very interesting implication, not including bacteria and viruses that invade the body as well as accidents, whoever is in charge of the brain is responsible for a number of problems that the cells and the world (Body) go through. Such as smoking, drinking, and risky things that result in injury. This would likely never happen, but a few cells need to go over to the ones controlling the brain and knock some sense into them.

I would have liked to hear a comment on the bit at the end where the body drinks more alcohol. I don't remember exactly what it was called (I think it included the word "tiger"), but it apparently is the idea that taking a small amount of what is making you feel bad will help you recover faster. The anime actually says that there is no scientific basis for it, but I heard from someone that it is actually known to work for some reason. I'm curious what someone more proficient in medicine thinks of this.
