    This was so helpful! I live in a very deciduous tree heavy area and I just started new cuttings of various thicknesses about 3 months ago. I am going to use that wiring technique on my thicker willow. I may try doing some vertical wires along the side to give a more "authentic" look.

    Must admit that I’ve been led to believe that leaving the wire on would eventually kill the tree. None of my bonsai books mention this technique!! Thank you for showing me these tips.

      I think he repeatedly mentions that the trees are black pines for a reason, i.e. that this is a technique specifically for them. Leaving the wires on certain kinds of trees ends with the wires slicing straight through the bark and ruining/killing the branches.

    Thank you for this channel. Very good detailed information. i absolutely love how you break information down. just finished your soil video, i have to say it is awesome how you really press home that everywhere is different and every plant is different so there is no 1 answer. as you have said multiple times in different videos the first goal of bonsai is a healthy tree. Me and my wife are starting a few japanese maples to create bonsai with.we have never done this before but both have wanted to for a long time.so thank you for the pleasant, informative, and wise videos.

    I will always remember this picture of a tree with a bicycle stuck in the trunk, the tree grew around the bike, it looked awesome. I wonder if such a thing is possible with bonsai, embedding objects into the tree. They would have to be little trinkets to fit the little trees, but it could add value.

    • @peterchan3100
      @peterchan3100 5 років тому +1

      Oh yes - I remember the bicycle one too. I have often seen iron fences grown into the trunk of trees and lifted up 4 or 5 metres high as the tree grows taller!!

    We use mulberry trees as anchors for the fence, and where it attaches to the trees, it grows around. The trees are strong and hold the fence up, even when the fence itself is crumbling.

      Doesnt always work because you will get strong rogue shoots that become trunks eventually, leaving the wired branch to die.

    I have seedling and sapling specimens that I potted last year and this year. As of now, I have them in a homemade potting soil. I was wondering if they can remain in an organic soil and if so for how long. Commercial fertilizers can add up to quite a few dollars and I am trying to keep my hobby as low-cost as possible but still provide the utmost care for my trees that I have harvested from our 38 acres. I was also wondering if a homemade fertilizer could be made, liquid or solid, from bunny, chicken and/or duck manure. Thank you so much for your time.

    Bonsai is for everyone. So, it's a safe bet to suppose this is a new era of stylistic innovation. As to the wire-bite, it's a matter of taste. I don't personally like it, but I'd never presume to say "it's wrong."

      Any type of plant will grow roots through the drainage hole, even cacti. If you need to move the plant, just cut off the protruding roots and set them on gravel at their new location. They will quickly send out new roots provided that there is damp soil under the gravel.

    Peter, I have an oak sapling in my garden that my son grew from an acorn 5 years ago. We put it in the ground not realising how quick it would grow. Two years in the ground and I am wondering if I can do anything to slow things down. I had (maybe crazy) an idea to try Bonsai type principles. The tree is about 4 foot high and same width. I just wonder if it needs to come out the ground into a (rather large) pot.

    Question - since some of the imported trees had iron wire which would rust would time, would the rust not harm the tree?
