Looks fantastic Paul, I really do love the use of wood to represent wood.. It really does make it stand out more and the painting/weathering is superb. Cheers
Thanks Michael, after uploading I felt I should have covered the painting and weathering in more detail but it was difficult to see differences as I went along. It’s really only with the close ups that you can appreciate the slight colour differences and the grain of the wood. From a standard 3 feet I might as well not have bothered! 😂. Still, I know it’s there and so do you and a few others. Paul
Your drawing shows 5 boards, yet you only used 4. What are the dimensions of the boars? If you use a razor saw and drag the teeth over the wood it will add a lot of wood grain to the wood. I liked your video so much I built some coal staithes for myself but made them 20mm high and also used 4 boards as I made them 5mm wide. Cheers from eastern Tennessee
Hey Simon, thanks mate. There’s very little extra, if anything, you would get with the kit option so why not build from scratch and put that fiver towards something more useful. 😉 Paul
Thank you MR. Your post has just reminded me I should have looked at your video using the coffee stirrers. I must remember that when it comes to the next wood project. Paul
They look really good Paul. Thanks for doing this. They look much better than the plastic kits. If I can find something small enough for N gauge I may well replace my staithes. Stephen
Thanks Stephen, the difficulties of N gauge rears it’s head again. I’m sure there are suitable strips of wood that would work in N gauge, a trip to your model shop may be in order. Hope you can find something and no doubt if you do decide to replace your staithes they’ll look incredible. Paul
I was looking forward to this one Paul and you have not disappointed! Looks superb, the grain of the wood seems to have come through on the back section especially giving it a rough dirty look, oerfect for a coal staithe. Another video to add to the "How to Do It" folder and I will also experiment with wood stain as suggested by Dunge Wood. Cheers Steve
Thank you Skel3110, I have another short how to in the pipeline so watch out for it next week. The close ups of the staithes really show the grain off well but they are lost a bit when viewed from distance. We know it’s there though. 😉. Paul
believe it or not Paul ive been making a staithe myself this week..(have only just seen this video!)..not as technical as yours..and the wood from one of my favourite haunts Costa Coffee! great stuff cheers dave
I had considered the coffee stirrers for the staithes but I had a few of these wood strips so went with that instead. Mouldy Raspberry made great use of the stirrers in one of his recent projects. I look forward to seeing your build in your next update. 😉 Paul
Thanks Barry, it’s just beginning to take shape now. It feels like I’ve been on a long journey with so much more ahead of me but that’s half the fun. Paul
Hi Paul with so much in front of you, you know you will never get to the end. Not sure if you watch David Howarth on youtube. he is now rebuilding his big layout again and that after he rebuilt it less then 2 yrs ago. It is fun though isn't it...........Barry
Thanks for the vote of confidence Barry! 😂 It’s certainly a long journey but that’s half the fun of it. Yes, I do watch David’s channel, two major changes in the last year although this second one is somewhat more major than first. He seems to get through the work fairly quickly though. Paul
Paul Good job, I'm going to build one but upscale to 7mm. The point is you were resourceful and made one, yes you can buy kits but I think your approach is better? Surely that is the point of modelling, being creative. As you know the amount of videos on UA-cam and articles on the net means we do t have to reinvent the wheel, we adapt to make it work.
Hey Steve, I think you’re right. I’m all for attempting to make something myself rather than a kit based option. One, you get a bespoke piece for the layout and secondly, as you say, it’s almost the reason for modelling in the first place. As for your 7mm version I think it should look even better in the larger scale to see that grain in the wood and more detail in the build if the notion took you to add it. Look forward to seeing it. Paul
@@GalgormHall Paul Think of the pioneers like Rev Peter Denny, austerity Britain, he made just a out everything. Whilst I like making kits I like to build stuff if I can, I'm building West Green Station, I measured up for a loading dock and of course the coal staithes. I just need a Bedford coal lorry that say G Thunberg coal merchants lol
Hey Paul, thanks mate. You know, it hadn’t but not a bad shout. I’ll maybe experiment when it comes to producing the barrow crossing at the platform end. Paul
A simple but interesting little feature which adds extra effect to your layout , nice one
Thank you John. Paul
I got excited when I saw you had an update. The coal scythes look great. I like your idea in assembling them and your tricks. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Leila for the comments and the excitement, plenty more ideas knocking about my head for future videos. Stay calm now. Paul
That was very helpful indeed Paul i think the wood work looks great.
Thank yo Tony, glad you got something out of it. Paul

Hi Paul, great how to the coal staithes look great and will look good sat in the cobble stone yard with coal in them, great job. Regards George.
Thank you for the kind comments George, it’s another small job ticked off the list anyway. Paul
Fabulous idea and well done. Like this very much - notes made! Cheers, Bob
Thanks Bob, so glad it’s been of help to you. Paul

Very nice Paul, looks better than buying it in kit form...Simon

A really effective way to do it, nice one!
Thank you Strath, cheap and easy to build. Ticks all the boxes. Paul

Great job!!! Regards Onno.
Thanks Onno. Did you get your card yet, it was sent out Monday to you. Paul
Not yet Paul! The Dutch post isn't very quick!! :-) Onno.

Nice bit of work Paul, looks great.
Had you thought about wood stain on the wood first?
Cheers Paul

GH you need some Tweezers!
You can never find the tools you need when you need them. 😆 Paul
