Hey! I really liked your point of view about the "beginner" plants. I've been growing carnivorous plants for 2 years now, and Cephalotus are my favorite. When i started i was so afraid about getting one, but i thought the same: if i can give the plants the conditions they need, why not? And so i got one, and i can say that in this 2 years the only problem i had was a little bit of powdery mildew, but nothing more (because at the beginning i sprayed them water, don't worked for me). And now here i am growing a lot of Cephs 😂 So i totally agree with you! Nice video!
I find your rant informative (and adorable!) I'm surprised some of your other videos don't get even close to as much attention as this one. And I love all the green your thumbnails provide, that is all lol.
@@plantlifeforever6994 I already do! I've had it almost 2 weeks now and it seems to be acclimating fine so far. She's not big but she's very nice! Thanks!
@@plantlifeforever6994 Well here we are about a year later and boy has it GROWN! It's doing really well so far and I even started a new plant by leaf cuttings! Hope yours is doing well too!
Wow, I can't believe I only found this video now... This is so informative and so helpful, thanks so much :) I have to grow them in my room under growlights as I live in Singapore, and temperatures outside are way too hot haha Btw, you do look beautiful ;)
@@plantlifeforever6994 I'll keep you up to date. I filled the pitcher with some distilled water and also gave it some orchid fertilizer on the leaves 1/4strength. The lid is still half way closed on the pitcher so hopefully it will recover soon. The container just gets quite hot up to 35 celcius as the weather here is very hot. Humidity is 50 to 65 in the container. Haven't watered it yet, but it is in a tall container and I put it in 2cm of distilled water yesterday.
@@Origmist It's doing great. Made lots of pitchers about 6 each. My cat chewed off two of them and a beetle ate one pitcher but the rest of the plant is growing beautiful. When I feed my baby venus flytraps bloodworms, I squirt yhe leftover juices and some bloodworms into the pitchers. Oh and I'm keeping it outside inder 10% shade cloth, I got stronger leds but it gets too hot so they like it outside when it gets cooler at night.
Just an update. We had a very bad hail storm and I brought my carnivorous plants inside. While standing there my cat pulled out my cephalotus and I found a small piece on the other side of the room. Replanted the piece and now about 4 months later it made the tiniest pitcher about 2mm big. So far it hasn't died yet but it was a learning curve, even overwatered it beginning of the winter and half the plant just suddenly died, I thought it was frost but in hind sight I know it was too wet and cold.
I got a baby ceph in the mail today and I'm torn mainly about the watering lmao The nursery california carnivores says to top water and not tray water, someone else told me to top water if the pot is shallow and to bottom water if it's tall, so I'm kinda torn on what's best for it lmao It's in what looks like 50/50 peat and perlite so, maybe the substrate you have can change its watering needs? 🤔
There’s so much advice online it’s hard to know! Mine is in quite a tall pot, but I hadn’t considered that haha :) I don’t think it will kill the ceph if you top water, sounds like the substrate is well draining so shouldn’t be a problem - you just don’t want to let the soil stay too wet on top or it might get crown rot 👑💚 possibly the goal of top watering and is to avoid root rot as they don’t like to sit in water for a long time like you might keep a VFT in a shallow tray of water.
@plant life forever 69 ah that's alot of good information actually, thank you! I might top water *super* carefully until I repot it into something alot taller, then ill kind of transition it into tray watering. Or if I'm seeing some negative reactions to top watering, I'll put it in a super shallow pot of water. Thank you again for the info, both in the comment and video! It's a big help!
I bought mine about a month ago however it seems to be drying out and they're all going yellow, I've only used rain water but really want to try and salvage it before it's too late, I'd appreciate any suggestions!
@@plantlifeforever6994 I've had it on the window sill where it gets a lot of light during the day but it's not very humid. I also made the mistake of leaving it in water (with my other insectiverous plants) before I saw that this is different to the others
@@stevepatt9443 okay :) if you're keeping the soil evenly moist then probably not under watering! I think try and increase the humidity with a cool mist humidifier, and is it possible they got scorched by the sun because it's been so hot? (That happened to vlad during the heatwave we've been having in the UK)!
@@plantlifeforever6994 I think that's what's happened as I was putting them outside during the hot weather but am off work next week so can spend some time with it. Would you recommend cutting away the dried out ones so any new ones have the space to grow? I could upload a short vid to my channel if that'd help?
@@stevepatt9443 sounds like the dots are all connecting! Yeah :) I would take off any of the crispy/dying stuff so it can out energy towards the new growth! I'm always happy to check out your channel if that's easier for you!
That means £20 :) I can't remember what I said about grow lights in this video, but I use them for all my carnivorous plants because most of them need some periods of direct sun, and I am keeping them on a windowsill (they wouldn't need lights if I could keep them outside)
@@plantlifeforever6994 Honestly that's a better option because ventrata was created before nepenthes alata got split up into different species so really it could be ventricosa and any species in the N. Alata group....

Amazing! We can really psych ourselves out in the beginning but yeah there's no reason why you can't pull it off! 🌿💪

Excellent video! Excellent advice! Research is the key, as well as observing what works and what doesn’t. Once you get the hang of it…easy peasy.

"You grow girl" is why I have 2 of these being delivered in a couple months. I'm not a girl but figured the sentiment was all inclusive
Your nepenthes is most likely a ventrata (ventricosa x alata). Nepenthes ventricosa has distinguished pitchers
Thanks:) I did manage to find out what it was when I got the giant one as they're the same and that one was labelled! 💚
Great video
Thanks!

how much temp need by Cephalotus follicularis esp in hot country?
Hey :) they like room temperatures from 10°C - 24°C (50°F - 75°F)
Your nepenthes is a 'ventrata'. That is a hybrid between ventricosa x alata.
Thank you :) eventually figured that out when I got a giant one of the same! Looking back is so funny how i was so confused 😂
It might actually be a hybrid of ventricosa and graciliflora

Ventricosa X Alata
it was hard to hear, where did you say you picked up your ceph?
Triffid Nurseries :)
Can I use perlite?
Yes :) I would use organic perlite if possible
