You should always loosen the cap first before draining the oil to release any pressure that might hold some of the oil in the crankcase. Also on a Subaru you need to prime it before you start it that way you get oil into the filter and not run the engine without enough oil circulating. Check out Mr Subaru video on how to do that.
Its recommended to use the Blue or preferably black Subaru Oil filter only. The bypass valve inside has a different opening value. It used to be a big issue on the EJ engines.
On these cars you can prime the oil by holding down the gas and letting it turn over for like 10-15 sec then turn off then turn back on and it’s primed
I knew someone would be saying this in the comments. I personally have never changed a crush washer and have never had a leak. It is cheap insurance but not everyone sees it as a necessity.
@@GG-ub4ej Cavalier attitudes like that will wipe out the entire crush washer industry. Imagine your Crosstrek flies off a cliff. Do you want to be found with oil drips afterward from a reused crush washer? It's like always wearing clean underwear. You never know when you could end up in the emergency room
Yeah I didn’t think much of it, but I’ve watched some videos where they tear the filters apart, and i don’t think im going to buy fram again. I have been using mobil 1 filters recently.
I always order mine on walmart.com they never have it in store but they have it online, and if you spend over $35 you get free two day shipping! I normally order two boxes at a time to save on shipping.
This might be a stupid question but where do you get the oil change stickers? Does it come with the oil box? Or can you buy them at a local auto store?
I fill it into a plastic container, whether the empty oil jug or ive used an empty wiper fluid jug. Then around here all the local auto parts stores have a oil disposal bin that you can pour your old oil in for free.
From what I can tell dexos approved oils are required in GM vehicles but I couldn't find anything requiring it in subarus manuals. I am not completely sure though, I have never looked for it truly, I usually just make sure it is the proper oil weight and whether I need synthetic or sae
Dexos is a GM spec. However, if an oil meets the Dexos spec it is going to meet the Subaru specification as long as it is the proper viscosity, in this case 0W-20.
Thanks for the video! I got my crosstrek and will be changing the oil myself every 3 months. Yes, I’m old, stuck in my ways.
Thanks for the video! Helped me working on my wife's car

Black is preferable. Blue are of similar build to fram garbage.
Really impressed at how easy Subaru makes maintenance.
This may sound profoundly stupid. But how do you measure 4.7 quarts?
Good video but watch some filter comparison videos. Fram is trash. Purolator One, Mobil1, or K&N always perform well.
Use a Subaru oil filter , also pre fill the filter before you install it so the engine does run dry for a sec or two.
wont the oil all come out when you flip it over to screw it on?

You should replace the crush washer each time the drain plug is removed

@@andrewhill1251 unironically hilarious
Lol nah bro
@@andrewhill1251 😂
Good video but I would recommend a Wix filter
Thank You.
Why are you using Fram
My employer makes the exhaust and gas tank for that car
FRAM filter... 🤢🤢🤢🤢
Yeah I didn’t think much of it, but I’ve watched some videos where they tear the filters apart, and i don’t think im going to buy fram again. I have been using mobil 1 filters recently.
Wheres the diy for the ramps
Fram is the worst filter , use Napa Gold!
I had that same problem changing the oil off my Subaru with the same oil collection pan... It's just splashes everywhere....
Yeah it sprays pretty violently at the start, I bought a larger oil pan to catch the oil and it has reduced the mess by a lot.
your car is at an incline. Will that get all the oil out? should the car not be level to get all the old oil out?
The bolt for the drip pan is on the very bottom so even at a slight incline it still completely drains the oil!
Nice video man! Where do you order that boxed oil from?
I always order mine on walmart.com they never have it in store but they have it online, and if you spend over $35 you get free two day shipping! I normally order two boxes at a time to save on shipping.

The chain auto parts stores normally have a roll of them by the oil that you can tear off a few for free!
What kind of crosstrek is this? XV??
Its a 2020 limited crosstrek, I think they dropped the xv tag when they remodeled the crosstreks in 2017
Would you happen to have the part number for the oil filter wrench?
Where you got the filter wrench?
What do you do with the old oil?
I fill it into a plastic container, whether the empty oil jug or ive used an empty wiper fluid jug. Then around here all the local auto parts stores have a oil disposal bin that you can pour your old oil in for free.
Is Dexos required in the 18-21 Crosstreks?

Ew..... Fram.....
Fram Ultra is not your everyday Fram. This is a quality filter. However, the Fram 7317 does NOT meet the Subaru bypass pressure spec.
