When I lived in Los Angeles 1972, I was a contestant on the Liars Club and won. Is there any way possible that I could locate that segment. It was a wonderful memory?
Larry Hovis was one of the prisoners on Hogan's Heroes. He was also a co-producer of this game show with Ralph Andrews (not to be confused with Ralph Edwards).
Probably because the USA network aired just the Armstrong hosted version of the show from '74 and '76. Had the ratings been strong enough, they could have picked up Ludden's version as well. Instead, they replaced it with Play The Percentages.
I saw a taping of this show when I was about 15, Letterman was on it when he still had his daytime show and nobody knew who he was. Would LOVE to find some episodes from that taping. Buddy Hackett was the other celeb along with Betty White and Larry Hovis. They did a bit with a puppy and Hackett pretended it was a saxophone.
I thought at one time Bill Cullen hosted this show. Then again, there was another game show I recall from Bill Cullen that aired later in the evening when I lived in Louisiana in 1978 or so. I recall there was some disco violin music that was the theme for the show.
+SuperPat88 The Bill Cullen show you're thinking of was "The Love Experts" (theme song: Spring Rain by Silvetti). Bill didn't host Liars Club but he was a guest panelist.
Love this version of The Liar's Club. One episode had Letterman and Dody Goodman---she had an object she said they put in horses...um, behinds to stop them from messing up the streets. The look on everyone's faces was hilarious!
I've seen David Letterman on The $20,000 Pyramid before, especially when he scared the living beJesus out of host Dick Clark wearing a L.A. Dodgers jacket.
I remember watching this as a kid. I thought it was the worst game show I had ever seen. Stiff, unfunny, slow-paced, cheap ($100 winnings?!)...and who the hell was Larry Hovis? Thanks for uploading it.
Why are all the women contestants so docile and unenergetic?? You'd think they'd be a little more excited to be on a game show... And David Letterman acts exactly the same! But what was he famous for in 78?
nothing much except for comedy writing and his own stand up but someone was trying to give him a break. It worked out for him eventually. Every time I he him from this era doing game shows he looks like he really hates being there, not the people he is with but just game shows in general but they were most certainly paying his bills at the time.
Letterman was there because of Allen Ludden. Allen saw potential in him to be in show business and invited him on various game shows to be "discovered".
+John Kleiner Actually, Rod Serling - yes, THAT Rod Serling - was the original host of Liars Club in 1969. (You can find the only 2 surviving episodes from his run here on UA-cam.)
I used to watched this Stoned when I was just 11 years old, it used to come on weekdays 11:00 p.m. on KTVU channel 2 which is now Fox, good times! 🌬️👌🚬💨☁⛅💭🏭🚭
11:47 My folks are from Sulphur Springs, Texas!!
2:26 “allen get your hand of it”

Despite this being a short run for Alan he return home to the game that he loved the following year on NBC
The producer once said that Betty White was the show's secret weapon: no one else could tell these kinds of lies with such a straight face....
This was a very enjoyable game show! thanks so much for posting it!! We had family fun watching it...
thank you so much for this! I would love to see more!!!
Thank you very much for posting this!!!! My brother and I loved this show. Great childhood memories! You are awesome!
The show kept Allen Ludden employed between Password and Password Plus.
I loved this show. Bring it back.
LOL Dick and Betty did the first season (first version) of Liar's Club when Rod Serling hosted it (posted here in UA-cam)!
loved this show! thanks for sharing it.

That first object? If I were a panelist, I'd have described it as a barbell collar (what holds the weights in place and keeps them from slipping off).
I love when Betty gets pissed out with Dick Gautier about the animal jokes. Thanks Hondo20132
I watched this show in the past, but I didn't know that Allen Ludden hosted it
Probably because the USA network aired just the Armstrong hosted version of the show from '74 and '76. Had the ratings been strong enough, they could have picked up Ludden's version as well. Instead, they replaced it with Play The Percentages.
I thought I saw some Ludden back in the mid-80s in Chicago on early Saturday mornings.
And on WHAS and WDRB in the 70’s.

I love the theme to this Version of Liars Club.

abcwatermark Thanks; I'll try to look that up sometime.
We call them Worldwide PAnts, Allen ;)
The show went from 4 to 3 contestants, budget cuts.
4 is too many. 3 is perfect.
It started out with two.
I knew that was a horn weight the second I saw it. I helped put a few of those on cattle when I was young.
Notice David Letterman's overuse of the word "pants". That's been a habit of his for longer than I thought.
This is great, 3 of my favorites are here: Betty, Allen and Larry

I won!!
David Letterman's production company is Worldwide Pants.
Liarsclub75 has some clips of Armstrong's version, presumably from their USA airings in 1986-87.
This is hilarious!! Love Betty and Allen
I think this episode features the longest airing of the (long lost) fee plug music I've ever heard (from 8:45 to 9:43).
Were they playing with POINTS or DOLLARS?
The 70s version used dollars but the 80s version settled on points to cut production costs that were expensive later on.
ooooorg! Betty and Allen!!!
I've seen David Letterman on The $20,000 Pyramid before, especially when he scared the living beJesus out of host Dick Clark wearing a L.A. Dodgers jacket.
@jelijh I meant in reruns of Liars Club......like on USA.
@tpir1972 They were playing with dollars.
Ludden died in '81

GingerAmberLynn Starred in “Hogan’s Heroes”.....was also the show’s executive producer

I won first place garden tools, catalina clothing, 7 days at the stardust lv
I loved the Stardust sadly its no longer around.
points too cheap to give money
Is this the only game show Allen did not involving words?
Well he's talking using words so this show wouldn't apply. If he was completely silent...
Jokers wild pilot
Another boring show!
I remembered this show when I was younger
@LeotheTiger1776 Now he just lies for fun.
