Thank you for this video. Other artists don't know how to paint with opaque watercolor so they blame their lack of skill on the paint. You did a great job!
Another great video and drawings!😁 the new colors in the pallette are really nice! And for beginner or in generall watercolor artists really great infos and tipps!! Would have killed for it when i started using watercolors😅😏 well you make failers to learn from them.
I love the idea of this palette and you definitely can make some very beautiful mixes!! I’m ordering and can’t wait to try to glaze with them… I have good cotton paper and the silver black velvet brushes but you truly have a gift for creating such soft edges… I first saw Steve use this and just impressed with the range!!! Great job on a truly unique and exciting palette!!! I love the wilder beast…spelling?? I’m a big fan of Hazel Soan and have her palette too. Love it but you have truly created a unique and beautiful palette!! Thank you P.S. you make it look so easy and it’s really not! Great film editing 😊
I have loved DaVinci paint since I started in watercolor 16 years ago. Glad to see them used in this video because I think they are overlooked by a lot of artists. I have always had really good luck with them. Love your work. Thank you for sharing.
Hullo Denise, I am so glad that you are still creating unique palettes and sharing your techniques for creating art with these wonderful paints! I hope to purchase an opaque palette, I know that I will be buying the new colors in tubes in the new year! I once dreamed of working with a paint company and creating mixes of my own, I am truly impressed with your mixes and how you combine your colors with how you create amazing paintings! Showing how you change a color by water control and density is not an easy task yet you make it look so easy, I am just a bit jealous of your skills! I do hope to see more videos from you as you settle into your new home. Please take care, be safe and keep painting joyfully! See ya next video, Oh the seal is my favorite from this video, thanks!
The new palette was delivered last week before the blizzard 🌨️. I’m looking forward to using it soon. I love your painted sketches in these colors ❤. Thanks for sharing your style with us.🎉
I received mine after our PNW winter storm. All mail and packages were almost two weeks late. I am excited to use this new palette as I loved your Earth Friendly choices. Happy New Year! 🎉
This is a great palette, Denise. I saw it first on Steve's channel (Thank you, Steve) and bought it right away. Can't wait to play around and see what I can do with it. God bless & Thanks for sharing.
I found you through Steve Mitchell. I love the palette and the paintings both you and Steve did really show how versatile this paint is. When you mentioned skillshare I looked you up and realized I'm following you. I'll have to go back to see which of your classes I've taken. I'm glad to have found your channel. I think the wildebeast was my favorite.
I've always wanted to try the Silver Black Velvet brushes, but they're made out squirrel and I just can't bring myself to buy one. The palette looks wonderful and I'm so happy for you that Denise's Gray is taking it's place along side my favorite Denise's Green. 👍
I tend more and more to neglect the unwritten rules of watercolor. I've bought quite a number of opaque colors and ones which are mixed with white in the last months. I sometimes like the softer edges of them. Transparent watercolor paints lean to have almost fine outlines. Having both kind of paints, and all between, means to have more variety. Which is fine with me. Thanks for all your efforts and your lovely paintings.
Having lots of fun with these paints, the colors and textures are luxurious and I'm exercising my color mixing skills which had been getting rusty. The purple you get from lilac and cerulean is just dreamy and it's been inspiring some new experiments with my subject matter and style. Would recommend these paints to anyone who wants to try something a little different than everything else on the market and stretch their creative wings :)
Beautiful sketches! I was wondering about how I would handle a landscape with it and then you did a demo haha very cool. Congrats on this series- that’s so cool!
thank you so much for this video! I was uncertain how I should use opaque watercolors and have been struggling with them. You really showed me all their potential, and I'm eager to rediscover my palette with all this new information in mind!
I love, love, love your paintings. And I often try to include some of your suggestions into my own paintings. I have long searched for my best transparent colors and gifted all my opaque ones. Now you come with opaque colors and they look so beautiful in your hands 💫. You always push me out of my comfort zone 🙈. Perhaps it is for the opaqueness of the colors as it is for black (and all colors). It is a journey. Just learn to know them, then you can take advantage of their capabilities. And my journey seems to be a long one. But joyful 😉.
Denise U R such a lovely artist. I have a few opaque colors in my palette, and I use them often. Thanx for doing this. I love your new opaque palette... congrats.
Thank you for sharing your beautiful art and palette with us. Your colors are on my wishlist, so I'll be checking to see when they are released. They look gorgeous! I have many of the colors you've included, but I'm looking forward to adding the new ones. Landscapes are my favorite, so your two new colors will fit right in.
Wow! I am new to your channel having found it through “Mind of Watercolor”. It’s a pleasure to watch you paint! What a beautiful pallet! I mostly paint florals but recently have begun painting landscapes. I really want this pallet!!!
I love them all but because of the colors I have to say the snake is my favorite. I love green, blue & teal and think it works really well for this piece 😊
My hubby and I just saw it on Steve's channel too and bought it right away. Beautiful colors and demo! We wanted the Silver Black Velvet brushes too, but a comment here said it was made with squirrel, so that's a "no" for me (vegan)😞. I just saw you had an Earth-Friendly Palette as well--wow that is great! I wish I didn't have as many paints as I have (mostly Daniel Smith and Windsor Newton) that would take me at least 3 lifetimes to use up...but it still is very tempting😉...I just found you and will follow you!
Hi Edith! Thank you kindly for your words and support! The SBVs are a blend of squirrel and synthetic, so they are a no-go for vegans. I hope you find another brush that you love, though!
I got your both your palettes for Christmas. I cannot put them down! My first experience with Da Vinci watercolors and I am now obsessed! Will have to get more shades : )
These paints work beautifully with your style of art ,as in you do a lot of animals.I think the type of paint effects you get with these !they are really beautiful, even the browns looked so nice .I do however think they lend more to an experienced watercolorist than a newbie ,as they would not be able to get the wonderful effects that you have achieved.I bet an elephant would look amazing done in these with touches of the pink and blues in the grey. I may however save my pennies and treat myself to a set because they look so interesting .You really showed them off perfectly 🥰
These are amazing. I love this set. I am obsessed with Denis's gray. I am thinking about going back to your water controll skill share and trying to paint the rhino with Denis's gray. I love all three paintings but I think the harbor seal is my favorite.
Oh that is such a great idea! That class and the rhino was the first watercolor project that I did where I looked at in and thought hey, I'm kinda good at this and it's fun too! Would be great to try it again and see how my skills have improved over the past year and a half or so :)
My husband bought me this palette for Christmas. I haven't used it yet as the idea of opaque watercolours is a little intimidating. I will make sure to try it soon, this video was very helpful. Beautiful pieces ❤️
Aw, thank him for me! I do have the first half of a german shepherd tutorial using this palette up on Patreon if feel like you want some more guidance. Part 2 will be coming up soon! Either way, I hope you enjoy it!
So pretty! Your paintings are beautiful! Is working with these paints similar to Kuretake Gansai watercolor paints which are more opaque as well? I have Kuretake paints and I love them. I’m wondering if they’re similar or if I should give this set a try. ❤️
Hi Diana! These are quite different from Kuratake. While both more opaque, Kuratake are more gummy, vivid, and sometimes dry glossy in masstone. These are soft, velvety, and matte. I hope that helps!
I am new to painting and recently found your channel. It keeps me up at night I enjoy it so much! You’re a fantastic artist! You mentioned that you use white gouache to do highlight details. Is that what you would recommend over something like Dr. Ph. Martin's Bleedproof White Fine Art Paint? And do you have a preferred brand?
Thank you, Miranda! Bleedproof White is actually a highly pigmented opaque watercolor/gouache, so they're similar! I use either pretty interchangeably. BPW is much more intense and harder to use sparingly. Gouache is better for subtle details.
❤ Beautiful work and an amazing palette! I would love to see what you do with that Violet iron oxide. I'm fascinated by it, but a little stumped too. ❤
Hi there! One video that comes to mind is my recent color spotlight on Phthalo Turquoise! My favorite use for it is mixing with cooler greens and blues for backgrounds :)
Gorgeous 😍! I use cobalt turquoise deep quite often. It's just a beautiful paint on its own. That stormy blue also looks fantastic. To me, it looks like it could take the place of a neutral tint or a Payne's grey. As a loyal DaVinci fan, I have to say I love this!

Thanks for highlighting Denise's palette, Steve.

I like DaVinci paint. I just wish that a half pan was actually a regular size half pan. The pan is small and the walls are extremely thick to shrinkflation your amount of paint. Pretty sleezy practice.
Hi there. Their pans are different than generic pans, but let's not throw around words like sleezy when its just their brand preference to do so. I just used a precise gram scale to measure paint (Sennieler's Ultramarine) by weight in a Meeden generic half pan, a DV, and an empty W&N half pan. Da Vinci paint also shrinks substantially less than other brands I've used going from wet to dry when considering refills, and they are one of the most affordable brands in the US.
When considering a brand's value, you need to consider the pigment payout of the final product as well as price per ounce overall, not the size the vessel they come in.
