Around 1981/82 I went with my friends to Danceteria in NYC. At some point during the night we made our way to the roof of the building and all of a sudden some English guy with a guitar starts playing this amazing song, A New England. It was Billy Bragg whom none of us had ever heard of and we were blown away. He was incredible. I’ll never forget that night.
"I saw two shooting stars last night and wished on them but they were only satellites, it's wrong to wish on space hardware, I wish, I wish you cared" is possibly one of the greatest lyrics in a love song ever
this is literally the most amazing thing ever. they are my two favourite singers ever. i was raised listening to billy bragg, and i also love kate nash's music. this is like my life put into one.
billy is simply brilliant and kate nash is good as well. anything billy does is amazing it does not matter if it's music or politics. I always love billy.
First time I watched that .... & they both bossed it! Saw Billy in the 80’s on the Red Wedge tour. Some things never grow old ..... “I don’t want to change the world I’m just looking for a New England”. Don’t even get me started on politics. I’m up for feeding hungry children. But children - my friends- were hungry in the 80’s in the north east during the miners strike. Glad this song never loses it’s relevance.......
i fucking loved this version! i think kate's actually a good singer. maybe not in the classic term, but i love her tones! and a new england is just bloody fantastic. 5stars
Great Duet and choice of song. I wish they sang the "Kirsty" verse at the end of A New England. My dreams were full of strange ideas My mind was set despite your fears But other things got in the way I never asked that boy to stay Once upon a time at home I sat beside the telephone Waiting for someone to pull me through When at last it didn't ring I knew it wasn't you
This is great on a couple of different levels. I hadn't heard Kate Nash before this , but both Kate, and the girl in the song, seem the perfect match for Bill and the guy in The Saturday Boy, or Shirley. That's why I like this pairing up so much.
Growing up in New England I believe it's singing to that-also a very Classist History and array of people's in a concentrated populace of Industrial Revolution small cities that have seen better days. I grew up in Massachusetts and Connecticut which of course were contemporaneous with Victorian London and other "Steeltowns" and Shipyard Harbor Towns-the power that built UK and U.S. We jibe at one another, but must remember our shared tradition. America has many National influences-but is British to its core, anchored in the New England to Philadelphia then DC "Blueblood" Bastions. For me this song speaks to my own "New England, family's of British immigrants Mayflower, etc.
Majestic, One of a few songs about love and mind set, that if we were all honest, can be very hard, The chairman Frank Sinatra, said the best love songs make you feel it without telling you how to feel, Chow Bella!!!!!!
A decade and a half of rewatching this. It’s my favourite version of New England. Incredible
💯

Great times at a great era. Danceteria, Peppermint Lounge in NYC. Emerald City and City Gardens in Jersey great times.

Grassy Gnoll it's space hardware not harder !?!/,?!!
I've always thought: "Waiting for someone to pull me through, when at last it didn't ring I knew it wasn't you" was so Zen as to be exquisite.
You can see when Kate sings this she almost gets a Glastonbury moment ie 😁- bless her.
@@neilandrews6169 Thanks, I just noticed (that's two years, so I'm getting better). And fixed.
SPOT ON, BEAUTIFULL IN ITS SIMPLICATY !
2023, kate Nash is still incredible, underrated and under played, the cribs are the best live band still and Billy Bragg is still a legend 🤲
this is literally the most amazing thing ever. they are my two favourite singers ever. i was raised listening to billy bragg, and i also love kate nash's music. this is like my life put into one.
This duet has added such a new and deeper dimension to the song. Absolutely stunning.
Great song, Kate Nash's voice really adds something to it.
Definitely!
Wow, best performance of the 30 years I've loved this song. Didn't those decades go by quickly???⏳
Of course I think an original diet with Kirsty McColl would be best but I've yet to find it.
Hello from the future
great collaboration - love how the female/male perspectives on ending bad relationships blend here. Well done.
That just gave me goosebumps..... Awesome!
Totally cool. Kate Nash puts a brilliant twist on a classic.
2 Classic Songs. Billy is a legend to our generation.
I think my dad would have liked this as much as I do.
billy is simply brilliant and kate nash is good as well. anything billy does is amazing it does not matter if it's music or politics. I always love billy.
Is he daed yet ?
There needs to be a studio version of this duet
Pretty well done. An unusual combination, but it works. New England will never get old.
you'd think they would take the time or trouble to find a good harmony but noooooo
Nice word here a men from holland;)
Kate Nash - Billy Brag
Some things should never happen. That clearly wasn't one of them. Brilliant.

The irony is that I was looking for "A New England" when I found this.
Totally same
Billy Bragg, ladies and gentle man. Legend.
The dogs bollocks
When I watch this I feel like I am in heaven.

It was awful. Kirsty MacColl must be spinning in her grave.
@@Doppelfrog wasn't her song to start with.
@@spiderweenie No, but her version's still much better than this.
She is awesome!

Great Duet and choice of song. I wish they sang the "Kirsty" verse at the end of A New England.
My dreams were full of strange ideas
My mind was set despite your fears
But other things got in the way
I never asked that boy to stay
Once upon a time at home
I sat beside the telephone
Waiting for someone to pull me through
When at last it didn't ring I knew it wasn't you
What an amazing match-up, Kate Nash and Billy Bragg, who would believe it?!
aaaaaaahhh goosebumps!!!!!!!!

It's an excellent performance...two people singing about real life. It's a great combination..... :)
And kirsty almost certainly wouldn't have a problem with this collabiration.
I love you Billy.......
Love this. New England is a class song
