When my kids ask me what the ultimate car was in 2010s, the C6 Z06 & Camaro5 SS 1LE are gonna be my answer. The LS3 is the quintessential big power motor of our time. Cam, heads, LSA adapter to supercharger- easy 800hp. Yeah, the hellcat & gt500 & voodoo engines are fantastic, but nothing comes close to beating the LS price/value proposition. Out of the big 3 muscle cars, the Camaro, yes, the one with the oldest and biggest engine, is said to be the "Track" car. Hats off to motown madmen.
This comparison makes more sense than your last video. Performance drivetrains from 2 rivaling vehicles of the same year. Dollar per horsepower, the LS drivetrain wins every-time.
Adding boost to the coyote, even the gen ones stock vs stock LS3 is def where the Yote shines. 10 lbs of boost on both vehicles netted 80+ more HP in the Yote. I love the LS3 packaging for certain vehicles but I love the relatively reliable performance of the Coyote when modded then the LS3’s tendency to drop lifters and spin bearings. We had a few issues in our shop with Gen 1 coyotes but not at all Gen 3. Much more robust engine and makes significantly more power especially on boost. 1400 rwhp on 18 psi.

Hey Rich have you ever thought about testing a 3.5 EcoBoost or 3.7 Cyclone. I'm curious to see what oversized valves or porting can do for these motors.
@@JohnThomas-vb9se NA they’d be gutless, they’re 9.5:1 compression. The voodoo is the better choice of the 5.2’s being 12:1 and not needing head work. Just cams and a Cobra Jet would be a very high revving NA setup.
That cj and better cams would pick up ALOT. I mentioned that on the last video: coyote vs 5.3 and he replied that the cj didn't exist when these tests were done.
Yeah it has been around for awhile, it's just that THIS test from Richard on the coyote was done before the cobra jet came out. He did this test wayyyyyyy back when the coyote first came out pretty much, or not long after.
This is a better comparison just based on cost availability what they came in its all pretty close because the coyote and 5.3l aren't really in the same category you can get a 5.3l and turbo it by the time you get a coyote so if you did a dollar for dollar the ls probably wins
That’s bc GM is unoriginal. The real measure of power is power per cubic inch: which the Coyote dominates. If it has even .5 more liters it would be equal after mods with less cubic inches

Coyote is less fuel efficient, less space efficient, less weight efficient, etc. In every possible metric, it is inferior. Compared to almost all other DOHC engines, it is abysmal. If having little pistons makes you feel better, then I guess keep sucking Ford off.

I know ford guys will say this and LS guys will say that... we have to consider yes the 6.2 does have the cubes but the coyote has 4 valves, overhead cams, and alot of other technology like variable cam timing and such.... the LS is your standard pushrod v8, easy to work on, cheap parts, and reliable. Both good its just what do you want? I'll stick with the LS and I have a ford in the driveway for reference. My first and last ford is good but the expensive issues they have yet to fix make it a pain in the ass.
Not so sure about reliable. Can't count how many cans we have had to replace on ls after lifter failure. But the dang cast oil pump Ford used on coyote isn't nothing to smile about
@@andymartin4747, they are reliable after the active fuel management lifters are changed to normal ones. Ford is using the active fuel management on their F150s with the 5.0 coyote. I tell you what, those things are having issues.
Reliable? I've known two people with Silverados now that had the oil-thingy on the intake manifold break and spray oil all over. I forget the name of the part, but it has oil in it and now two people I've known have had the thing blow up. Meanwhile my 2.5 1993 Plymouth Voyager has been running for 2+ years with zero maintenance and a leaky head gasket. You want reliable? 2.2 or 2.5 Chrysler engines!

You haven't looked at the Ford Miami engine. It's based on Coyote, hand built for performance, supercharged as stock & was used in Ford Australia's Falcon GT & Pursuit models. Look at Ford Falcon FG2 (GT or Pursuit).
I am familiar with both engines and they are both great performers. However, if I have to fix something major I can do any job on a push rod V8. Twin overhead what???
No doubt, the coyote is a beast of its own in the modular family. They took everything they learned from the cobra 4v and turned it up to 11. They say the coyote is the V8 version of the GTR's VR38...
If i may make a request for all these video's to include, fuel consumption. It would be interesting to see how much fuel or energy it takes to produce said power. Would be curious to see the efficiency. Either way love the videos!
One comparison that would be super cool would be brake specific fuel consumption, AKA , a real comparison of engine efficiency. It would also be super interesting to de-stroke an LS3 down to 5 litres to do a very direct comparison of the two architectures , throwing a gen 3 Hemi in the mix would also be great. Never been a better era for the classic American V8......Sooo many choices and possibilities to fit any engine bay and budget !!!
I think destroking the LS would give the advantage to the coyote. Evening out displacement wouldn't be fair imo because the coyote would still have 4 valves per cylinder and 4 cams with independent valve timing. The LS being OHV has great packaging for big displacement in a small physical size but needs that extra displacement advantage to make up for its other disadvantages when it comes to moving air. I think a 5.0 DOHC is pretty equal to a 6.2 OHV considering 4 smaller valves flow about 30% better then 2 larger ones. Plus like Richard said, the dyno sheet doesn't tell the whole story. You can rev the coyote out significantly more then the LS which allows you to run more aggressive gearing. Thats why on the street the perform so equally. Probably better for the coyote on the street considering how flat the torque curve is. It doesn't blow the tires off as quickly as an LS. Both engines are great in their own ways IMO.
Efficiency is a silly test for highly modded V8's. It's like trying to determine which wheel barrel has a lower drag co-efficient. If you do insist on that nonsense, you might as well also grab DOHC cylinder heads that fit the LS block. They're from the Mercury SB4 7.0L which makes 750hp natrually aspirated.
@@HioSSilver1999 I'm not saying you can't turn 8k rpm. That can certainly be done. I'm sure there are guys out there turning over 9k like a Nascar engine, but it takes a lot more to get there from an LS. With a coyote, you can literally bolt a cobra jet intake on it and pull to 8k no problem at all. The power isn't even rolling over at that point. With an LS you're going to need a big cam (probably a solid roller), CNC heads, a high ram intake where you have to cut a hole in your hood, and most importantly a valve train that's going to stay stable at that rpm. A valvetrain thats going to need constant monitoring, adjustments, and replacement due to additional wear and lash adjustments. There's a reason those Nascar engines only make it one 500 mile race at 9500 before needed to be rebuilt. Now if you are talking about a race engine only then that's cool, but Im more concerned with typical street builds. Something you could daily drive if you wanted to.
All the ones ive seen you used gen1 yote stock tuned ecu. When you did the 5.3 vs yote and the liters were closer what happened? No chance junk yard special. Use gen3 next time.
The Gen 1 Yote and LS3 were the market place competitors for the Camaro and Mustang in 2011 (not the Mustang Coyote and 5.3L truck engine-those are just close in displacement)
Always appreciate your content and videos. I’m personally more of an LS/LT guy, but I just wanted to ask; Why didn’t you replace the springs and go with a larger Camshaft on the Coyote Engine like you did on the LS3 ?
any reason you didn't use an NSR cam in the LS and a comparable single throttle manifold? Surely if you going to do a comparison you'd apply the same rules to each competitor?

(and I don't care which one makes more power) just that comparisons should be somewhat equal. otherwise all you doing is saying, if I modify this engine this way, and that engine a different way they make different power. As tested, it was ported heads with mild no springs needed cams and factory intake vs stock heads with a bigger cam and springs and a tunnel ram. You normally do make it very close comparison when do this stuff, but I think this time no so much.
@@davidthomas6628 I figured that would have been the case. However, on an optimized cal, I'd believe that smoothing that out would be on the list of things to do. Maybe it's the OCD, or a touch of the tism but I personally wouldn't want that. I'd also assume that Richard's control over that is somewhat limited because he's using a stock PCM.

Ford has the 7.3 Godzilla, so there's no reason for that. Considering what might be happening with electrification we're somewhat lucky to still have the selection of engines that we have at the moment.
People have made 800-850hp N/A from coyotes, they have the kitches sink thrown at them though. For that kind of N/A power, it costs quite a lot more than a supercharger does.
You can buy used ones for way less than a coyote. Plus everything you need to build it is pretty cheap. Everything to build a 5.0 is expensive compared to ls parts

Just have to point out, because my friend use to tell me all the time. The mustang you should was a 2010 because the 2011 that had a coyote had a 5.0 badge on the fender not a Gt badge.
If you're not limited by strict engine 'displacement' limits and aren't restricted by brand loyalty, the LS wins hands down! The LS not only makes more power for the price, but also takes up less space despite technically being a "bigger" engine. Engine 'displacement' is a function of bore, stroke, and the number of cylinders; and doesn't necessarily reflect the amount of space an engine takes up. Since it is DOHC, the "5.0"L Coyote takes up considerably more space than the (pushrod OHV) 6.2L LS3 does. In fact, the Coyote is taller (when using a similar-height maniifold) and much wider (in all configurations) than even Ford's own 7.3L pushrod OHV Godzilla engine!
Nice making a ton of power and not needing 50 cams (ok, 4). The cost difference in just that upgrade is big. The simplicity of the LS is why it will always be the more favored option in general. Not really knocking on the coyote. I just like when something simple does the trick. Less potential issues, less sensors, less this and that.
@@richardholdener1727Waiting for you to do a boost comparison. Everyone saying the LS wins hands down psi vs psi and mod for mod. Take a Gen 2 or Gen 3 Coyote, completely stock, and put it up against any factory LS, LT engine you want. Take the same boost source, Whipple, Procharger, whatever and keeping them both completely stock, start adding boost and see which engine out performs the other.
I'm a big coyote fan, that being said I love to see a cost breakdown on the parts used in these tests...I know it wouldn't be favorable to me😢. Knowing the 5.0 engine loves boost, I like to see what the 6.2 and 5.0 do with a twin screw blower, or centrifugal supercharger, or turbo setup. I think it would be a closer match up than NA. You know the old saying "no replacement for displacement" except for boost, that changes things😊
Well simply put if the 5.0 makes x amount of power then at 14.6 psi or 1 bar the hp would double or should. Same thing with the ls3. But I know where your going lol the yote heads and the short stroke on boost will make a ton of power , I honestly think and i could be wrong lol but if both where ran at 25 psi i think the yote may sqeak by. and im a chevy guy

I love Ford. And I know the coyote is a more “efficient” engine. But, I always hated that they used smaller engines compared to chevy. Like it’s said, there’s no replacement for displacement. I always wished ford did more with the SOHC 6.2L found in the 1st gen raptors, super duties, and f150’s. Imagine a “coyote” related DOHC 6.2L as an upgrade option on the mustangs and f150’s. It would scream. I know the 6.2 is more of a work horse engine but it does have racing heritage from the mid 2000’s and Is almost a modern day cammer engine. Hell, even if they kept the SOHC variant and the aftermarket picked up on it more it would still be a hell of a engine.
Much better comparison than a performance engine vs a junk yard truck engine. Ford uses multiple cams and valves to make power, Chevy stuck to the old ways with push rods and displacement to make power, and the old ways won.
The old ways are very limited. You know one test he won't do? Take both a Coyote and a LS or LT, whichever he wants, keep them both completely stock and just start adding boost. It won't even be close.
@@danilofraga4676 there's only a few completely stock engines in the world producing that kind of power, but if your excluding body from "stock", then yes, LT4, LT5 both can make over 1000 HP without breaking open the engine.
@@richardholdener1727 the cams in the 5.0 were nsr cams but the cam in the ls was so big it was close to having piston to valve clearance issues. Seems like the ls got a much wilder cam. Ported heads on the 5.0 arnt exactly a huge upgrade either. But yes im a ford guy lol. How could you tell :p to make it worse i have a 3v lololol. All that said. Pretty hard to compare a 5.0 to a 6.2...even with the dohc advantages.
on our dyno most FBO (but stock intake manifold) coyotes run ~485 at the wheels on e85 and thats usually where cam, intake, and 2" primary LTH 6th gens with LT1s are on e85 as well. our tuner, who is chevy guy but an incredible tuner of damn near anything says that the coyotes are difficult to tune, especially the higher the gen of the motor is, but they drive so much better. Porting the mustang heads isnt really getting you that much power and neither are the cams without really good tuning which can take a considerable amount of time. you also dont need to put a converter in a mustang either, which is something no one ever talks about when going to these cam packages on LS/LT cars.
@@Day1Mechaniccoyotes have a wild learning curve for tuning but VCT makes them insanely easy to drive. 700whp driving like a close to stock car is just wild to me.
I have a test suggestion. No one has seem to have done this, at least where I’ve seen. Take a small cubic inch engine like a 5.7 ls1 and put modified ls3 heads on it. You’d have to chance to smaller intake valves and seat and then have them flow the max they can. Then use a baby cam to start off with and go up a couple sizes. The popular “theory” is it would have horrible torque down low and would be a bad street engine. I believe the opposite. I believe it would have good manners with a small cam and large head flow.

L83 is a "small displacement" engine, but the LT cylinder heads flow comparably to between LS3 and LS7 numbers un-ported. Port those bitches and you've got your test there. Between direct injection and VVT, thats why you see 6.0LS power from a 5.3LT.

Ok has anyone tried to get a gud set of headers on their 5.0 in a gt, that's alone is a pain in the ass!, now try upgrading cams with chains and guards and guddess know hopefully you can find a turner know what the hell he's doing. Point is Richard saying ls engines can and will always be the go to engine to beat the shit out of win or lose your ride is taking u wherever the heck u want!
It's a no brainer the LS3 makes torque from idle to 6000rpm 74 foot pounds more at peak stock vs stock than the 5.0 Coyote and even a modded 5.0 Coyote with heads and cams made 475 torque vs the stock LS3s 485 torque at peak these 5.0 Coyotes NA can run well but if NA using stock heads I'm taking the LS3 and I'm sure cracking into a 5.0 Coyote is more costly than if doing the same to a LS3 even the modded LS3 with a fairly mild cam made 564/510 with stock heads for something very reliable and streetable more affordable than a 5.0 Coyote most serious 5.0 Coyote go turbo is to make big power that's probably easier than spending the money to crack it open if you got it and you like it go with it 5.0s Coyotes like boost
Stock cams have made 1300whp, unless you’re going all out NA or all out Centri blower it’s pointless to cam one of these engines. Get a 5.0, boost it, be happy.
Im glad i havent seen the coyote nut huggers all over in the comments. For some reason they think its the best thing ever and even poo poo the ford 7.3 on the ford channels. Said it many times and ill say it again, modular fords do ZERO for me. Stock, modified, boost, n/a i honestly dont care for them. That's just not even a good comparison. Equal boost on both ls3 would still yield more power.

GM’s LT6 which is basically GM’s version of the Coyote (small displacement, 4-valve V8) makes 670HP naturally aspirated in 100% stock form.

Yeah because it has 4 valves per cylinder. And variable cam timing. I rather have more cubic inch then having to buy 4 expensive cams.

The 5.0 torque reminds me of one of the Loch Ness Monster hoaxes, where 3 bails of hay are in a foot of water with a covering, giving it 3 humps.
I would suggest taking the mercury DOHC and adapt that to a 5.3 with a cam for a good comparison.

One comparison that would be super cool would be brake specific fuel consumption, AKA , a real comparison of engine efficiency. It would also be super interesting to de-stroke an LS3 down to 5 litres to do a very direct comparison of the two architectures , throwing a gen 3 Hemi in the mix would also be great. Never been a better era for the classic American V8......Sooo many choices and possibilities to fit any engine bay and budget !!!
I think destroking the LS would give the advantage to the coyote. Evening out displacement wouldn't be fair imo because the coyote would still have 4 valves per cylinder and 4 cams with independent valve timing. The LS being OHV has great packaging for big displacement in a small physical size but needs that extra displacement advantage to make up for its other disadvantages when it comes to moving air. I think a 5.0 DOHC is pretty equal to a 6.2 OHV considering 4 smaller valves flow about 30% better then 2 larger ones. Plus like Richard said, the dyno sheet doesn't tell the whole story. You can rev the coyote out significantly more then the LS which allows you to run more aggressive gearing. Thats why on the street the perform so equally. Probably better for the coyote on the street considering how flat the torque curve is. It doesn't blow the tires off as quickly as an LS. Both engines are great in their own ways IMO.
Efficiency is a silly test for highly modded V8's. It's like trying to determine which wheel barrel has a lower drag co-efficient. If you do insist on that nonsense, you might as well also grab DOHC cylinder heads that fit the LS block. They're from the Mercury SB4 7.0L which makes 750hp natrually aspirated.

@@HioSSilver1999 I'm not saying you can't turn 8k rpm. That can certainly be done. I'm sure there are guys out there turning over 9k like a Nascar engine, but it takes a lot more to get there from an LS. With a coyote, you can literally bolt a cobra jet intake on it and pull to 8k no problem at all. The power isn't even rolling over at that point. With an LS you're going to need a big cam (probably a solid roller), CNC heads, a high ram intake where you have to cut a hole in your hood, and most importantly a valve train that's going to stay stable at that rpm. A valvetrain thats going to need constant monitoring, adjustments, and replacement due to additional wear and lash adjustments. There's a reason those Nascar engines only make it one 500 mile race at 9500 before needed to be rebuilt. Now if you are talking about a race engine only then that's cool, but Im more concerned with typical street builds. Something you could daily drive if you wanted to.
All the ones ive seen you used gen1 yote stock tuned ecu. When you did the 5.3 vs yote and the liters were closer what happened? No chance junk yard special. Use gen3 next time.
The Gen 1 Yote and LS3 were the market place competitors for the Camaro and Mustang in 2011 (not the Mustang Coyote and 5.3L truck engine-those are just close in displacement)

we did-it made under 600 hp as I covered in the video-the bigger LS3 motor makes more than this 1st gen Coyote-the later Yotes do better

I'm not saying it would be the difference between the LS making more or less then the yote. (and I don't care which one makes more power) just that comparisons should be somewhat equal. otherwise all you doing is saying, if I modify this engine this way, and that engine a different way they make different power.
As tested, it was ported heads with mild no springs needed cams and factory intake vs stock heads with a bigger cam and springs and a tunnel ram.
You normally do make it very close comparison when do this stuff, but I think this time no so much.
Can you explain that goofy wave in the yote's power and torque curves? With VVT, could you iron that out with management?

@@davidthomas6628 I figured that would have been the case. However, on an optimized cal, I'd believe that smoothing that out would be on the list of things to do. Maybe it's the OCD, or a touch of the tism but I personally wouldn't want that. I'd also assume that Richard's control over that is somewhat limited because he's using a stock PCM.

Can you imagine the footprint that engine would have? At its small displacement it is already a much larger engine than the LS.
@@stephenhodge6441 it really wouldn't be much bigger. The heads are already the biggest component. The block is dwarfed by the heads. They could space the bores out another inch without adding much overall size
Ford has the 7.3 Godzilla, so there's no reason for that. Considering what might be happening with electrification we're somewhat lucky to still have the selection of engines that we have at the moment.

People have made 800-850hp N/A from coyotes, they have the kitches sink thrown at them though. For that kind of N/A power, it costs quite a lot more than a supercharger does.

Sorry a BOSS intake is not an aftermarket intake it is a Factory part. So outside rhe cams all the Coyote got was factory parts.

Just have to point out, because my friend use to tell me all the time. The mustang you should was a 2010 because the 2011 that had a coyote had a 5.0 badge on the fender not a Gt badge.
If you're not limited by strict engine 'displacement' limits and aren't restricted by brand loyalty, the LS wins hands down! The LS not only makes more power for the price, but also takes up less space despite technically being a "bigger" engine.
Engine 'displacement' is a function of bore, stroke, and the number of cylinders; and doesn't necessarily reflect the amount of space an engine takes up. Since it is DOHC, the "5.0"L Coyote takes up considerably more space than the (pushrod OHV) 6.2L LS3 does. In fact, the Coyote is taller (when using a similar-height maniifold) and much wider (in all configurations) than even Ford's own 7.3L pushrod OHV Godzilla engine!

Nice making a ton of power and not needing 50 cams (ok, 4). The cost difference in just that upgrade is big.
The simplicity of the LS is why it will always be the more favored option in general. Not really knocking on the coyote. I just like when something simple does the trick. Less potential issues, less sensors, less this and that.

Take a Gen 2 or Gen 3 Coyote, completely stock, and put it up against any factory LS, LT engine you want. Take the same boost source, Whipple, Procharger, whatever and keeping them both completely stock, start adding boost and see which engine out performs the other.
Really makes me wonder how well and LS can do with DOHC... Oh. We now know with the corvette.

Get a Gen 2, much better gearing on those MT82’s and there’s no DI so the engine is much simpler.
I'm a big coyote fan, that being said I love to see a cost breakdown on the parts used in these tests...I know it wouldn't be favorable to me😢.
Knowing the 5.0 engine loves boost, I like to see what the 6.2 and 5.0 do with a twin screw blower, or centrifugal supercharger, or turbo setup.
I think it would be a closer match up than NA.
You know the old saying "no replacement for displacement" except for boost, that changes things😊
Well simply put if the 5.0 makes x amount of power then at 14.6 psi or 1 bar the hp would double or should. Same thing with the ls3. But I know where your going lol the yote heads and the short stroke on boost will make a ton of power , I honestly think and i could be wrong lol but if both where ran at 25 psi i think the yote may sqeak by. and im a chevy guy

I love Ford. And I know the coyote is a more “efficient” engine. But, I always hated that they used smaller engines compared to chevy. Like it’s said, there’s no replacement for displacement. I always wished ford did more with the SOHC 6.2L found in the 1st gen raptors, super duties, and f150’s. Imagine a “coyote” related DOHC 6.2L as an upgrade option on the mustangs and f150’s. It would scream. I know the 6.2 is more of a work horse engine but it does have racing heritage from the mid 2000’s and Is almost a modern day cammer engine. Hell, even if they kept the SOHC variant and the aftermarket picked up on it more it would still be a hell of a engine.

Much better comparison than a performance engine vs a junk yard truck engine. Ford uses multiple cams and valves to make power, Chevy stuck to the old ways with push rods and displacement to make power, and the old ways won.
The old ways are very limited. You know one test he won't do? Take both a Coyote and a LS or LT, whichever he wants, keep them both completely stock and just start adding boost. It won't even be close.

I think that the new coyote engines are about 30hp to the wheels more than the old one. Some person tested all the coyote gens.
It’ll be the same outcome except the LT will beat it even more.
on our dyno most FBO (but stock intake manifold) coyotes run ~485 at the wheels on e85 and thats usually where cam, intake, and 2" primary LTH 6th gens with LT1s are on e85 as well. our tuner, who is chevy guy but an incredible tuner of damn near anything says that the coyotes are difficult to tune, especially the higher the gen of the motor is, but they drive so much better. Porting the mustang heads isnt really getting you that much power and neither are the cams without really good tuning which can take a considerable amount of time. you also dont need to put a converter in a mustang either, which is something no one ever talks about when going to these cam packages on LS/LT cars.
@@Day1Mechaniccoyotes have a wild learning curve for tuning but VCT makes them insanely easy to drive. 700whp driving like a close to stock car is just wild to me.

I have a test suggestion. No one has seem to have done this, at least where I’ve seen. Take a small cubic inch engine like a 5.7 ls1 and put modified ls3 heads on it. You’d have to chance to smaller intake valves and seat and then have them flow the max they can. Then use a baby cam to start off with and go up a couple sizes. The popular “theory” is it would have horrible torque down low and would be a bad street engine. I believe the opposite. I believe it would have good manners with a small cam and large head flow.
be easier to put a 4.8l crank in a 6.0l and then run rec port heads.

@@Turbogto_guy FWIW a 5.3 LT would be a perfect example of what you want to do there. L83 is a "small displacement" engine, but the LT cylinder heads flow comparably to between LS3 and LS7 numbers un-ported. Port those bitches and you've got your test there.

Ok has anyone tried to get a gud set of headers on their 5.0 in a gt, that's alone is a pain in the ass!, now try upgrading cams with chains and guards and guddess know hopefully you can find a turner know what the hell he's doing. It's a no brainer the LS3 makes torque from idle to 6000rpm 74 foot pounds more at peak stock vs stock than the 5.0 Coyote and even a modded 5.0 Coyote with heads and cams made 475 torque vs the stock LS3s 485 torque at peak these 5.0 Coyotes NA can run well but if NA using stock heads I'm taking the LS3 and I'm sure cracking into a 5.0 Coyote is more costly than if doing the same to a LS3 even the modded LS3 with a fairly mild cam made 564/510 with stock heads for something very reliable and streetable more affordable than a 5.0 Coyote most serious 5.0 Coyote go turbo is to make big power that's probably easier than spending the money to crack it open if you got it and you like it go with it 5.0s Coyotes like boost
