A lot of online tabs are wrong so videos like this significantly help. It's not too bad once you've gotten good at hybrid picking, which isn't necessarily the hardest technique ever.

have u noticed how in the main riff at 0:40 they pedal on a note a semitone apart, on the 6th string (bill 3rd fret, brent 4th)? they play the most disgusting 'harmony' and it makes the riff super intense.
A big part of it too is that Brent hybrid picks a lot of riffs, bill doesn't. So they usually play slightly different variations of the riff simply because of that.
These 4 dudes were absolutely meant to find each other and form Mastodon!! There will never be another band like these guys and we were lucky enough to exist while it happened. some extremely talented musicians and the definition of original... I listened Mastodon 2 times live, and the guys almost makes no mistakes, some songs Brann Dailor uses metronome and others he don't use, and songs are played almost like you listen them on spotify. So for a almost 4 min song, just one mistake, is pretty acceptable.
what i love about them is they dont use any fancy tuning, and the riffs are actually original, they bypass a lot of the stnadard power chords and the riffs carry a lot of the melody...its not just 'backing track' for the singer. good job mastodon. took me a while to discover them though....barely getting to them just recently..

It's not a directed lesson but you can clearly see the picking and fretting hand motions, combine that with some use of the pause button and you'll be able to figure it out
Bill Kelliher used a jcm800 on this album, and mills acoutics cabinets along with the marshall on tour, brent used jcm800s, fender twin for clean, and a plexi for some of the softer but not so clean stuff. On tour for the album, brent used, a jcm800, a plexi head or an orange rockerverb head with an orange cab, and a diesel vh4. More recently ,bill has been using a mesa boogie royal atlantic head.As far as I know, brent uses mostly the same stuff. Watch live at the aragon to see it for yourself.

I was really intimidated to try and learn this song, but I decided to just skip the opening arpeggios for now and just start from the verse. Taking me a while to get it sounding right, but it's becoming more fun the more I get used to it. Amazing band, great song.

Man, it has been said that the best technique is technique that is not noticeable. That is very true here with Brent's technique - so efficient and economical!
You can see how perfect Bill is and how he keeps everything tight. Brent on other hand is extremely talented but makes mistakes, ive seen that live aswell, Bill always there to keep everything together. Both are amazing players, one of the best around.

Nick Puente Brent started off as a banjo player and his whole playing style is based around banjo techniques and voicings so that's where some of the wacky chords come from. Some of the stuff is modal, as well, which is cool.

To be perfectly honest, something like this is gonna be way easier to remember when you create it than when you're learning it, because it comes out of your personal style and playing techniques and is probably playing to your strengths. Any time a tab book is printed, it is submitted to them for review to make sure it's accurate and they are like, "We don't read tabs. Just go ahead and print it." I've seen tabs in books that are not even close to how it is actually played.
Will Castillo Where the hell did you hear that? Saying they don't know how to read tabs seems highly unlikely due to the fact they write, record and play music so well. I learned tabs when I was probably 15, within the first couple years of when i started playing. Most tab books have standard notation too. Are you saying they can't read either?
Great song! I finally learned this, the intro was a bit tricky because of the hybrid picking thing, I was not used to it at all. It turns out that I am throwing hybrid picking unconsciously wherever I can :)
I read in an interview that Bill used to only use down strokes but Brent was trying to get him to learn alternating for riffs and such, and apparently here he is alternate picking as well.
I know people love Brent but Bill is way underrated. He's one of the best rhythm guitar players I've ever seen. His right hand technique is great.

Every time I hear that solo I get goosebumps.
This is not a "how to" video, it's just Bill and Brent sitting together playing Divinations with no bass or backing drums. I love Mastodon, but this isn't a video really showing HOW to play the song. I thought they were going to provide a simple lesson on how to play the riffs.
They did a proper lesson for it but it was on the website and now it's gone :(
Well, you need to know this is not one of their hardest song, you know, without hybrid picking and these hard shits. If you really wanna know how to play this song buy the book with all the tabs.

Tomas Verdugo Muñoz Don't buy the tab books. Neither Bill nor Brent know how to read tabs. Any time a tab book is printed, it is submitted to them for review to make sure it's accurate and they are like, "We don't read tabs. Just go ahead and print it." I've seen tabs in books that are not even close to how it is actually played.
Will Castillo Where the hell did you hear that? Saying they don't know how to read tabs seems highly unlikely due to the fact they write, record and play music so well. I learned tabs when I was probably 15, within the first couple years of when i started playing. Most tab books have standard notation too. Are you saying they can't read either?

Great song! I finally learned this, the intro was a bit tricky because of the hybrid picking thing, I was not used to it at all. It turns out that I am throwing hybrid picking unconsciously wherever I can :)

@antonswitajewski if you had the issue of guitar world from september '09 it has the tabs. the goal is to read the tabs while they play it.

I read in an interview that Bill used to only use down strokes but Brent was trying to get him to learn alternating for riffs and such, and apparently here he is alternate picking as well.
